Yes, a 20 year old liter bike that was known in its day as the "widowmaker" due to its unpredictable handling and instability at high speeds, a great recommendation especially for someone watching this looking for their first big bike, what could go wrong lol
@@BigUriel I think you should read up on the bike. The widowmaker was the tl1000s which used a rotary damper not on the TL1000R. The tl1000s also has a different frame then the tl1000r. The unpredictable of the TL1000S came from its rotary damper and the rear shock. When you cook the rear shock and the rear wheel won’t have much traction, which can easily put you on your ass when you overpower the tire with the abundant torque of the V-twin. You can do this on most liter bikes. If you're getting into a liter bike and don't understand the amount of torque you have on your hands, then maybe stick to a 600cc or lower.
@@kasper79Actually the R had the rotary dampener as well as the S. The S got branded the widow maker because of their propensity to go full tank slap at a moments notice, which is why Suzuki immediately installed the steering damper after numerous test riders were killed.

If it came from some throttle happy guy pushing it's top speed, well that's probably not what you want. I rode an endro to 80K and then it was sold to a friend who put another 20K on it. Went to a friend of his for a few years until he decided to rebuild it. Not sure if the bike was ever put back together? It was still running fine well over 100K. Honda 4 stroke BTW. 1974 version.

It was fun but you have to admit it was bloody mental, certainly wasn't a bike for amateurs imho.
Used VFRs are generally pretty cheap, and built to last. The old CBR600F kind of fits the definition of "sports touring" by modern standards, even though it was supposed to be a sports bike back in that day. The Yamaha YZF-600R can also be had for next to nothing.
1998-2004 Honda vtr1000f super hawk. Now have 2 in the stable. Both in mint condition, both picked up for $3500, and both with less than 15k miles. Top speed 160, and v twin noises. Love them super chickens.

Quick question. The Ducati 996 engine is 90 degrees. I’ve always heard that referred to as an “L” twin. You made a point to say it’s a “V” twin. Please explain.
Just seems like yesterday that I was drooling at these bikes, but I didn't have the money. Now they are considered dated? I still love the rounded look of the older bikes. I'm retro and the styling and performance of the GSX R1000 is more than enough bike for the fastest of the so called modern day squid riders. Even today I would contest that the old liter bikes are way too much power for the streets. They really were designed to be track weapons. I first learned how to ride on a 75 Honda CB 350 back in 79. I then bought a Honda Hawk 450T new in 82 and rode that bike for over 10 years without one problem. I had a lot of fun and good memories on this motorcycle. Was it under powered? Yeah. Was it too small for my 6' 2" frame? Okay. Was it difficult to hang with a GPz 550 Kawasaki in the long straights? Indeed. Could I work on it and keep it tuned with standard household tools? Yes! Did it have outstanding gas mileage? Yep-54 city/62 Hwy. Did I really need a Honda 750 Interceptor? No. Did I want one? Yes. You get the idea by now right? Cheers fellow motorcyclists...keep the rubber on the road!

Dont think you will find a 996 for under 4k unless it hit something at it's top speed

I have a 97 YZF 1000r Thunderace, the grandfather to the R1. Sure it's an old bike but I have no issue keeping up with newer liter bikes. A one year oddity here in the states. Collectibility is rising for these bikes. I will leave this world with that bike still in my garage, we have history.
I had no idea those old gixxers had so much power. They were ahead of their time. Some the top 1000cc bikes of today dont even make that much power
I had a 2006 GSXR 1000 I bought new with suspension, -1 +1 520 chain, 190/60/17 rear tire, Akro Evo 2 system, Vortex rear sets, GPR steering stabilizer, HH pads and GP brakes lines that made 167.8 hp at the tire and got the weight down to 414lbs in 2007. I've ridden newer bikes since and it was my favorite bike I've ever ridden. Had I kept it I would have done BST CF wheels, ported and polished head, cams, Brembo MC and gotten more serious about removing weight. God I loved that bike
Suzuki tl1000r. 996 cc, 4-stroke, V-twin, liquid-cooled, DOHC, 8-valve, 135 hp at 9500 rpm, 78 ft·lbs at 7500 rpm, 165 mph top speed.....got my 2000 TL1000r for $1500
Yes, a 20 year old liter bike that was known in its day as the "widowmaker" due to its unpredictable handling and instability at high speeds, a great recommendation especially for someone watching this looking for their first big bike, what could go wrong lol
Tl1000r now your talking!!!! I'd luv to park that next to my 87 gsxr 1100!
@@kasper79Actually the R had the rotary dampener as well as the S. The S got branded the widow maker because of their propensity to go full tank slap at a moments notice, which is why Suzuki immediately installed the steering damper after numerous test riders were killed.
Just bought a 2001 Speed Triple for 2200. A fine bike, and I agree, nothing better than a triple cylinder!
05 ninja zx10r famously known as the widow maker 2500-4500, that probably deserves the number 1 spot

My 2003 Goldwing, Weight as I ride it, 940lbs, 0 - 60 at 4.15 Sec., Quarter mile 12.12, and I topped it out at 120mph. Yeah, not bad for an “Old Man’s Bike”😎

I would have liked to have seen the Blackbird, TL1, and RC51 make it up there. I owned all three of them for right around the 3k mark and all three were insanely rowdy

My first sports bike was brand new 1993 yamaha fzr600 when I was 23years old. I got busted when my dad found out I bought the bike. I parked it in my friends house and when I went home my dad held the little license plate..😄
I got a 2000 996 Biposto with 50mm Termignoni slipons and matching chip for $7000 NZD some of the best money i ever spent then 2 months later got a 1989 900ss for $1500 NZD. Still blows me away 2 Ducati for under 10k. Some people rescue stray dogs reckon I'm gonna make a shelter for derelict Ducati.
You better take back what you said about the 954 that bike is still beautiful to this day.
Black and grey with chrome wheels
It has definitely aged very well, much better than any of the other bikes on the list except the 996.
I had new 98 zx9r and new 02 954.
The 954 was by far the better bike. Though it was a pain to work on and the cams wore very early.
I used to day dream in high school about the new 05 blue/white gixxer 1000.
I could never call it old-school!
Last year I got myself a Gsxr 1000 k5. But it just has 180hp and not 200hp. It is still a BEAST if you consider it just weights 166kg 😍

what is the highest mileage you'd go on buying a used bike?
Depends on the bike. Depends how good of a bike mechanic you are?
40k or so tops, most people dont get the Valve job done when its due and its hard to find a good bike after that mileage
@@michelhadid I have two cruiser over 50K, no problems with either. I know what I'm looking for and I can work on these bikes. For a sport bike 50K is getting long in the tooth, depends how it was ridden and if the maintenance was done.

Pretty sure that was the fastest production motorcycle in the world before the Busa, right?
Yes
They may not make your stupid fast criteria but fz1, z1000, and 1050 sprint are pretty darn fast for >$4000 @153-160 mph
Butcher Bill might as well throw in the first CB1000R, Mille Tuono and the Speed Triple 1050 in there for good measure.

One of the mentalist bikes I have ever ridden.
@@tractorboyracer9165 Why ?, I have a gixxer 1000 K6 and Bandit 600 2004 and I always really liked this first generation of kawasaki and all the media around it
@@racerguy3972 because it wheelies out of just about every corner it takes. Wheelies on the power even at high speeds and shakes its head at every opportunity. Nothing like a tank slapper at 130mph. Also pushed my contacts around my eyeballs even with the visor down lol. I think kawasaki just wanted to be fastest at that point and blow the user friendly side. It was fun but you have to admit it was bloody mental, certainly wasn't a bike for amateurs imho.
I ride a GSXR 750 1999, and a GSXR 1000 K2. Love both of them.
I'd love to see an episode on Sport Touring bikes.
Used VFRs are generally pretty cheap, and built to last. The old CBR600F kind of fits the definition of "sports touring" by modern standards, even though it was supposed to be a sports bike back in that day.
The Yamaha YZF-600R can also be had for next to nothing.
I see Buell xb12s for 3-4k sometimes. I'm always so tempted...

Quick question. The Ducati 996 engine is 90 degrees. I’ve always heard that referred to as an “L” twin. You made a point to say it’s a “V” twin. Please explain.
It's semantics. If you make a 90 degree V what do you get?
7:30 it's good thing to notice that they are the last Kawas with carburetor
Blackbird?
ZX11 AND 12?
