Welcome to a brand new Cinema 4D tutorial!
In this video I will show you how to create growing coral in C4D R20. We will start with the animation. Some matrix points that grow along the Y axis. With the MoGraph Tracer we'll create to body of the coral structure. After that we use the Volume Builden and the Volume Mesher to create geometry out of the Tracer. Last but not least we will add detail to the whole simulation to make it look a bit more realistic.
I hope you enjoy this video lesson and if you have any questions please let me know in the comment section. Suggestions are also welcome!

Please make more tutorials. It's so good
Thanks KabeeshS! I will
@@Nielsc4dtutorials Your renders are amazing, please make tutorials on how to make these amazing renders.. texturing, lighting, etc... ♥
great tutorial
@Iraida Hoopes go fuck yourself.
Best channel I found for octane tutorials 👏 I like how the Videos are kept short and I am looking forward for new tutos. Thanks a lot!
very simple but effective method! really apreciate for sharing
still didnt watch this , but its look amazing and i guess its amazing tut
Really good one. Thank you.
Very nice tutorial Niels. Thank you.
You're welcome MotionLove
I just discovered your tutorials, they are amazing please keep it up!!! I'll definitely be sharing them!
Thanks! New tutorial coming this month ;)
@@Nielsc4dtutorials I just discovered them as well. LOVE it. Thank you!!!
thanks! very very helpful!
great tip thanks !
thanks for your tutorial~
sir damn awesome really please keep making tutorials for its really helps
thank you so much :)
YESSSSS. DANK YOU
Legend uses His voice now XD
btw Thanks for the tutorials
Hahah thanks Deneth;) And you're welcome!
really nice... Thank you.
You're welcome!
you can teach how to make the materials too
Thanks
Hi, do you have a tutorial on what to do next to get it looking like the provided example at the start??
Hi Niels, great tutorial, thanks so much for posting. I have a quick question. In the Volume Builder when I go to apply "smooth layer" or "reshape layer" I can only see an option for "fog smooth". How can I activate/toggle on the options for smooth layer and reshape layer? If anyone else can help me out, it would be much appreciated. Cheers.
👏
Hey, thanks for your tutorial! the result looks so good :) I have one question about the volume builder in R21. It seems like it doesn't have the 'Reshape layer' there. Is there another thing that I could use? Hope to hear from you!. :)
I think it's now called "dilate and erode" under de SDF Smooth menu
wish u could do a tutorial on the lighting. also thanks for this Tutorial
In this video I show you how to create a lightrig with Octane.

Could you please make a tutorial on a realistic underwater environment with god rays and caustic? Really struggling with this.

Hello Niels
Do you know how to install the 'Thrausi' plugin so that it appears in external modules?
Thanks for your help !
patrick
So I just followed along with this one and when I render it out, I can still see the matrix squares. Any suggestions?
🤩🤩🤩
This is great Niels: how would you approach the growth following a surface (like a head) instead than simply going up?
Thanks Argo! I made a tutorial about particles following a surface. You can put the tracer object from that tutorial in a Volume Builder as well.

Niels - C4D Tutorials perfect! Thank you, man!
You're welcome Argo!
Are you able to add this volume mesh effect to objects i.e (characters, buildings, etc...), also, nice video! Very useful!
Thanks Sakujo! Yes you can use geometry to "mask out" other objects in the Volume Builder.
What renderer did you use? Are you using displacement maps for texture?
I use Octane. I didn't use a displacement map but a bump map.
Really nice tutorial.
just a problem, when I try to render the choir does not appear, only if I do it editable, what can be the problem?
Hi Greg, what renderer are you using?
@@Nielsc4dtutorials Thank you!
The c4d engines, standard, physical and prorender. In none appears that geometry. I see it in the preview but not in the render. I think it's a problem between the matrix and the tracer. because using the tracer with other elements works. I do not know what could happen
@@Didacxyz Strange.. The only think I can think off is that the visible in render is set to off.
@@Nielsc4dtutorials I am having the same problem, can you somehow send your render settings? Thanks for a nice tutorial!
@@CarolineVang Hey! Did you manage to solve this? I'm facing the same issue.
Hi Niels! for some reason when I'm trying to render it out it renders only "drops" that are floating in the air but there are no paths from tracing. Any suggestions?
Hi Andrey,
Tried to put the volume mesher in a connect object? Maybe that helps.
Hey in R21, Reshape layer is replaced with SDF Dilate & Erode - how do I use this instead?
Yes but only if we change the Volume Type from Fog to Signed Distance Field.
Can anyone kindly share how to go from this point?
TIA
might be late to this but i used "displace turbulence" in the random field noise type at 73% scale (instead of using SDF dilate & erode) and it turned out well!
What's the difference between the SDF Smooth layer vs the Reshape layer?
Smooth is the name suggests, it smooths the mesh. With the reshape layer yoy can do multiple things, like adding displacement like details with a shader effector
full coral render only in viewport. final render show only top of coral. any idea?
Did you create a Volume Mesher? Make the Volume Builder a child of the Volume Mesher.
@@Nielsc4dtutorials yes bro.
Yes,I have met the same problem. Did you solve it?
does someone know how to bake this?
Right-mouse on the Volume Mesher and then "bake as Alembic".
Can I use it on r19?
No. The volume feature is only available in R20.
please come back
I will;)
can youdo this in r19?
No. The new volume feature comes with R20.
8:50 I can’t find the reshape layer.... mine is R21
In R21 and S22 is called "SDF Dilate and Erode". Click and hold on the "SDF Smooth" button. Then a menu appears.
Niels - C4D Tutorials Thanks for quick respond and a nice tutorial! Really appreciate you!😊
@@user-ev8cc4wd3g You're welcome;) Glad you enjoyed the tutorial!
@@Nielsc4dtutorials hi Niels- thank you for your tutorial! however I'm having a similar problem...when my volume type is set to 'fog' there isn't a SDF smooth/ menu available. Which means I can't add the reshape layer.. Any tips on why this might be happening in R21? cheers :)
@@mikaelastafford You're welcome Mikaela. Try the "fog add" and in the fields tab you can apply a "Shader-Field".
5:52 i think you forgot to tell about changing the scale from 31% to 60%
cool.. textures? :/
how would you render this out?
I used Octane render.
@@Nielsc4dtutorials I'm new to C4D i have no idea what im doing lol not sure how to use that either
Is this possible in r19?
No, only in R20 because of the new Volume feature.
@@Nielsc4dtutorials thank you!!!

Displacement and sculpt is much faster then this!
this literally took me ten minutes to setup with great results
