I agree with you. I pared down a lot. Here’s my problem, my mother lived through depression times. I hear her voice saying”You may need that. “. I think a lot of us have that to fight also.
Hi Mary, You have a very good point! Many of us have parents who say the same thing. Unfortunately, this has left many of us packed to the gills with stuff we don't need or use. I hope this video helps inspire people to let go of some of those things.🥰
I keep scarves and belts because even if they do go out of style they take up so little space that to keep them until they do come back in style. Thanks for the good suggestions!
I really love that so many people like to donate their clothes 😊 sometimes stuff just has to go into the bin. I've helped out at the german red cross and... well, people were donating EVERYTHING. broken stuff, dirty stiff or old underwear. Takes hours to get through hundreds of boxes to get a few usable items. When you donate, you can help just putting in little notes which size the clothes are (in case you cut off the label), this saves a lot of time ❤
After my late husband Steve passed, i sold the house we built and downsized. I had to get rid of my wedding gown, it had been cleaned and preserved and boxed. It killed me to do that as it was such a happy day and a beautiful wedding. But i told myself e had the puctures and video, I could see it anytime. Plus i simply had no room to keep it. I took it to my favorite thrift store and donated it with the headband that matched. But i yold them, whoever bought it had to call me so i could gear how muchshe loved it. The money helped the store and the lady who bought itcalled, she was also a second time bride and loved it! Plus it fit perfectly. Sometimes, decisions are hard to make, but once done we know we did the right thing!💗
Very comprehensive list...the best I've come across!❤ You really get to the bottom of the topic. Most others have about 5 categories. Being so specific forces you to delve into those forgotten spots😊
I recently discovered a couple things: 1) If you have lost a significant amount of weight find a really good tailor and save yourself hundreds, if not thousands of dollars by getting much needed alterations on high quality clothing. It's not cheap, but will save you a ton of money over buying new. 2) I was ready to get rid of a black, longer length blazer (which was deemed outdated last season), only to see it featured as "on trend" this season. If it is high quality, I "retire" it and wait a season or two to see. Trends change in a blink of an eye.
@@lv4366 I gained 70 pounds in 7 months because of a prescribed medicine. I tried many, many diets and finally lost 70 pounds 30 years later. I pulled out my storage box from the early 90s. It had leather pants and skirts, tailored wool blazers, wide leg wool trousers, trench coats and silk blouses. SCORE!
Thanks so much - I'm glad you got a lot out of it. Yes, holding onto the bad memories pieces doesn't put good vibes in your closet. Kudos for getting rid of it!
@@ockmf I would think it would be easy to get rid of items with a bad memory, but what about clothes with a good memory. I still keep a pants suit my late husband picked out for me. Need to lose a little weight to fit into the pants better and the jacket is knee length. I always love it and wear a pin with it( color is navy blue), the pin is the Diana pin, a large imitation sapphire surrounded with diamonds, looked like her engagement ring. I'm holding onto for now, maybe later it will find a new home. Thanks for all the advice. Love your messages. Debbie
Your recommendation to get rid of unworn shoes resonated. I have short, pointed toe boots with 2" heels that sciatica will probably prevent me from wearing again. It's time to donate, because now I have lovely 1" heel boots to replace them. You are such a lovely person with sound advice. Thank you for being you.
*suluxy* got me back into fashion lol. The prices for the real shit made me stop paying attention for a long time because I couldn't participate. Also I want one of those Adidas Balenciaga collab bags but will I still like it in 5 years? Why spend thousands of dollars on that??? Nope.
I just moved into what will be my retirement residence, and knew I had less closet space, so have before the move I got very ruthless in going through my closet and dresser and shoes. It has really helped me have only those things I really like and wear staring at me in my closet! I do have one closet for coats and jackets so they aren’t crowded in and a closet that holds my out of season clothes. None of these closets are large but by purging before the move everything fits well
Great list. I am actually in the process of downsizing my closet(s). After my children moved out I started moving into their closets! It is now a big problem. I recently had two friends sell their houses and downsized. Watching what they were going through I am going to try to get ahead of the game before my day comes to downsize. Wish me luck!
One thing I have learned from you is to ‘take my time’ with everything fashion, from how I set up my closet, to putting outfits together, to getting rid of the old, to just loving what I have. I used to rush the process but thanks to you I enjoy the process. Thanks, Nancy! ❤
I have items in every single list that you mentioned. I am in the process of doing my-end-of-the-year closet cleaning and this video has been an eye opener! I am retired now and there is nothing that I hate most than looking at the clothes that I used to wear to work, but I still have them. I will follow your advise 100%!! Out of my closet they go!!
I thought I'd been doing quite well with my purging but laughed watching this as I still have things from each category, especially the multiple black trousers!! I think they must actually breed in my wardrobe 😂
@@janine1517 you simply can't have too many pairs of black pants!! Regular ones, dressy ones, Church ones, Capri, even have two pairs with a small slit up the side in two different sizes. Now that I actually wrote that down I realize how much I need help and prayer. Keep sharing ladies!!!!!🤪
Hi Nancy! This is Donna a long lost childhood friend. I recently went through my entire wardrobe and either donated or listed them on my poshmark. It is liberating to downsize. We reach a certain point in our lives and we realize we just have too much. I personally only wear black, always have. It goes with everything. I treated myself and bought an app called Stylebook. It makes you shop your own closet instead of going out and buying new. Love your channel and great content.
I, too, only wear black. I don’t like to purchase clothing, I make too many mistakes. Black is very forgiving in that department. Also, I don’t want to have to remember what I wore the last time I went to where I am planning to go.
This video is so timely! I now live in a climate where I need to put away summer clothes and bring out my winter clothes from the back of my closet. My closet is PACKED and I’m finding items squished in between that I forgot about😜. It is so true about shoes! I have so many that are beautiful, love the colors, but do I wear them….no. It is so hard to get rid of things for me….I guess I’m emotionally attached, feel bad about the amount of money I spent on them….whatever the reason…..I’m ready to clean things out👍. Love your videos❤️
Go through our closets a minimum of 3 times a year. Sometimes big purge or small. When we moved to our condo a hard rule, we each have a number of hangers and storage space what ever comes in something has to go. It works for us 😊
As you get older too and your lifestyle changes you realise there are so many items in your wardrobe that are not going to be worn and many brand new and you keep for the “ just in case moment “ . Sometimes it’s just facing reality and then move on . I am in the process of doing that often 😊It’s actually hard and sometimes sad but hey life goes on .
Great suggestions! I tend to cull as I go because my wardrobe is quite small so if I buy something new, I have to cull something that is similar that I either don't wear/ don't like anymore/ doesn't fit right etc etc Its the only way I can make it work for me. Have to do the bags and unworn shoes though ;-)
1. Clothes that no longer fit. 2. Unworn shoes. 3. Outdated trends. 4. Worn-out basics. 5. Dresses from past events. 6. Multiple black trousers. 7. Unused handbags. 8. Jewellery you don’t wear. 9. WOW - just found you and OH boy do I need to clean out!! Thank you. I had something in almost every category..... THANK YOU. I am purging for fall. great list.
A 60kg weight loss saw me shopping my wardrobe for items that suddenly fit again. I have an expensive 25-year-old dress, trousers & even underwear with tags on that have been wonderful to rediscover & would have been costly to replace. So if you think you may lose weight, please hold off on ditching those smaller favourites. Definitely agree with the other points especially black pants, shoes & handbags. Anything stained, damaged or uncomfortable is gone!
Yes, I just take clothes that fit no more out of my daily wardrobe. I keep things which are in a good estate. Just lost 10kg and went shopping in by boxes. I modified several pieces to make them temporary again and some trousers became temporary again because the skinny jeans got out of fashion.
Absolutely agree with all of the comments. I have found I have quite a few jeans, yes the style is still current, but I don't need 5 of the same style and I only need one for gardening. My grandchildren have aged, so print tops that hide stains aren't so necessary anymore.
This was so good! I thought I had it all under control - capsule wardrobe, changeover and toss every 6 months - but..... the ill-fitting underwear/bras and ratty pyjamas hit home! My coats were a problem too - as these aren't in my regular closet - but will go through and donate as many as I can!
It does feel so good, doesn't it? Not to mention, I'm sure your wardrobe feels lighter, more manageable, and filled with only clothes you currently wear. 🥰
My employer is one of many that is now fully remote/work from home. I really enjoyed many yrs of office life but at 63 am loving the reduced stress of driving in our busy city. Life is now comfortable jeans, loose fitting yoga pants (not leggings!)gym/athletic shorts.Sweatshirts, short and long sleeved tshirts. I do go out to dinner and dance clubs most weekends. You have me encouraged to declutter old uncomfortable dress shoes and worn out sandals. I'm not sure about parting with boots. The style changes back and forth from rounded to currently a pointer toe. Ive been contemplating a Christmas shirt for over a week for a weekend GA Christmas village trip w/ friends. Decided now not to waste the $30 and wear a black and red plaid I already have! Also have a beautiful crushed 'velvet look' forest green top I can wear all winter. Loved this video.
I have one *suluxy* bag I got in 2019, it's the LV white catogram speedy. It's counter quality and it has a nice honey patina now, so the leather is real. I think whatever makes you happy go for it. I've seen LV with plastic leather and blood red glaze...
Having moved into smaller places 3 times in the last 2 years plus losing weight, I now have literally nothing to get rid of. Wanna get rid of stuff? Move...a LOT!
Thank you for this!! I do pretty well but this list gave me some pitfalls. I'm going to tackle this one category at a time! I appreciate you breaking it down, less overwhelming that way.
I agree with getting rid of stained or damaged clothing. I'd also say try everything on at least once a year, as many things no longer fit when you do! Let someone else enjoy them 😊
Great video. I have been decluttering a little, but your video made me realize I need to go through my shoes, nightgowns and tee shirts. Love your videos.
great video! i purged most of my black pants. kept one pair cropped faux leather, one pair velvet wide leg, one pair cropped wool trousers. that’s it! I am a light spring and have no black in my wardrobe anymore except those three items. 🎉
I love your videos. I do a sweep thru every time I change out clothes for the season. I took a load off yesterday to donate. I've started a bag for summer items to donate next spring. If you do it every season, it is so much easier.
Boy did you hit a sore spot! I have way too many purses, shoes, and scarves and need to purge. My closet is over loaded with these. You’ve inspired me to start today. Thanks for your permission to clean up!
Just the opposite of clothes that make you feel sad, I have hung on to certain dresses and other items that bring back memories of great times or times that I said "Wow, I look and feel great in this"! I guess I keep them for nostalgic purposes because they are not items I would ever wear again. Maybe it's time to say good-bye! Thank you for these sensible tips!
Definitely good advice. Only thing I will not be getting rid of is the promo t shirts. I spend a lot of time gardening and cleaning up after my horses and goat so I need lots of those and tend to wear them right out. I will be getting rid of some coats I think. That is a weakness I have. Yet living in a mainly warm climate they don’t get much use.
Just start small and do one classification at a time. Perhaps you start with your jewelry or accessories. Then start going through your t-shirts and pants...once you get started on it, it does get easier. AND think about how much you're going to love your closet when it's done!
My method is to take everything out of my closet & lay it on my bed. Then put back in what I truly love, then things I really like, then I see how much space I have left & then put in according to how much I wear it. Anything left over goes bye-bye. My closet looks so fresh afterwards & I'm not flipping through clothes I don't wear.
Great video! I decluttered two weeks ago. But after watching the video I need to do it again! My problem was I never donated workout clothes. And shoes and purses. I love to shop, I’m guilty.
Particularly liked the one about Christmas jumpers. Keep them from year to year wear them for a few days then put them away again will sort that today😊
Christmas specific items actually worn for whole month for decorating, shopping, Christmas Events like Christmas markets, concerts, caroling, cookie baking and Hallmark movie nights. "Cheers" T-shirt good for New Year's and all Champaign events. Most of November and December good for sequins, satins, velvets. All cold months good for velvets. Sequins great for all fireworks or bonfire nights. I usually pack my Christmas-only apparel with my Christmas decorations. Also wear Christmas only items for ard writing cards and practicing Christmas music and wrapping presents. A Christmas apron is a great accessory to convert a generic outfit to Christmas theme. Same for.costume jewelry. A vest is another good way to go several days of Christmas outfits without laundering. I get tired of prints and sometimes put them away for away for a year or two. I probably donate 3 for every item I save for another year. Otherwise I agree with everything else, with more emphasis on shoes in the discomfort category. WELL DONE.
I don't do trends! Everything in my closet is a timeless classic. I donated all my heels a long time ago (hip replacement; I just have really gorgeous flats now).
I agree with the multiple black pants. That’s a thing for sure! I’m not sure about the occasional formal dresses. I’ve got about 7 that I rotate every now and then. It’s great because they are all so different that I never need to buy a dress for an event. I can just shop my closet! Got rid of the bridesmaid dresses though. 😂 Such a great video 😊!
I have one *suluxy* bag I got in 2019, it's the LV white catogram speedy. It's counter quality and it has a nice honey patina now, so the leather is real. I think whatever makes you happy go for it. I've seen LV with plastic leather and blood red glaze...
Oh I hate to say it, but as I've gotten older it's all leggings and seasonal t-shirts. I think it's time to clean out my closet. :) Thanks for the reminder.
Not sure where this comment might sit, but what about RETURNING those pieces before they take up residence in the closet...hence you may end up with less clothing with the labels still attached - just a thought - lots of good advice here, thank you!
I just cleared out my scarves and found a lot of belts that I was storing, now I must go through belts! Still not sure how to start to declutter my jewelry, it a bit overwhelming. 😊💙
I love the hot pink you wear. I wear it too but since I don't like black I'm always confused about what color shoes to wear. Can you suggest something?

I learned my lesson about wearing something that I really love to a funeral. I had to get rid of the dress and coat that I wore to my grandfather’s funeral. All I could think of was his funeral when I saw those items hanging there.
I’m also a collector of black pants. Just 2 weeks ago I took all black pants out of my closet and tried on each pair. I made a big pile of “ will not wear again” pants. I was shocked to discover that my donate pile contained 32 pair of black and a couple navy pants. And the thing is that I still have 20 pair that I know I will wear. How did it get so out of control? Am I fortunate that I can afford so many pants or am I crazy for buying and keeping so many?
I think it's a matter of - you know what you like! It's great that you were able to donate so many pairs and now you have space to see the pairs you actually like to wear. 😀
I have a confession to make. Was cleaning out just a few things about two months ago. I took a pretty pair of sandals out of the shoe rack, they still looked great. Tried them on and as soon as I stood on them, the entire bottom heal collapsed and when I took it off , it looked like I was pouring sand out of a shoe!!!!! Do you think, maybe I kept them tttoooooooo long. I had them for about 15 years. Yes I know, I need prayer🐸

I have one *suluxy* bag I got in 2019, it's the LV white catogram speedy. It's counter quality and it has a nice honey patina now, so the leather is real. I think whatever makes you happy go for it. I've seen LV with plastic leather and blood red glaze...
I was listening passively... then you spoke directly to me. Promotional tshirts. Im 56 and i started marathons this year. So many tshirts. 🤦♀️
Having moved into smaller places 3 times in the last 2 years plus
losing weight, I now have literally nothing to get rid of. Wanna get rid of stuff? Move...a LOT!
You make a great point...who wants to lug all that stuff from house to house? Congrats on the weight loss, too, Kathleen! 😍
Let someone else enjoy them 😊
Well said, Debra! 👏
Oh, I like all of the ones you decided to keep! As a light spring, do you wear navy instead of black?
I love your videos. I do a sweep thru every time I change out clothes for the season. I took a load off yesterday to donate. I've started a bag for summer items to donate next spring. If you do it every season, it is so much easier.
Boy did you hit a sore spot! I have way too many purses, shoes, and scarves and need to purge. My closet is over loaded with these. You’ve inspired me to start today. Thanks for your permission to clean up!
My pleasure, Joann. We often forget that these items get dated, just like our clothes. Great job taking the first steps! 🤩
I worked for a fine jeweler in the late 80s during college. I have redone a lot of that jewelry to be more current. Now I wear all my jewelry 😊
It's a great list, need reminders frequently!
Shoes that are uncomfortable are the items that I will donate first. You are right about shoes and handbags...my weaknesses.
Spot on!
Thanks so much! Which one was your favorite?
Excellent video. You hit on all the stuff that needs to go.
Thank you for your motivating ideas!!!❤❤❤
You're welcome, Marissa! I'm glad you enjoyed them! ❤
I don't find it easy to let go of things, but I totally agree with your list, so I will give it a go soon.
Heading to my closet right now! Next stop: Goodwill
Great job! 💪
Great video. Just did a fall closet clean out. Now I know some more things I really should let go of. Thanks for the tips.
That's great to hear, Vicki! I'm glad you found the tips helpful! 😍
You nailed it! Guilty on all counts. Going make a list of the 30 and start purging! Thanks for the push! 😊
Wonderful! I did make a PDF printout of the entire list and it's available in my community, Style Uncorked: www.skool.com/style-uncorked/about
Definitely good advice.
Wow! This is a comprehensive list. Thanks!!
You're very welcome! I'm glad it was helpful!
Boy, did I need this video. Thanks
Wow! I'm so glad you found it helpful! What resonated with you the most?
@@shoppingonchampagne Just about everything.
@@KLEINMAN12 Glad I can help! Keep me posted on your progress! 😍
Great list! Now to get into my closet!☺️
love your new frames! and how many white shirts do i need lol
Thanks so much, Julie! 🤓If you're like me, you need a lot of white shirts! I think I have more white shirts than black pants 😂
You mentioned all my clutter nightmares. Thanks for inspiring me to get started. ❤
Hi Carol, Those nightmares are lurking in all of our closets - you're not alone. Good job getting started on it! 💪
All those recommendations make so much sens! But it is so hard to begin!
Just start small and do one classification at a time. Perhaps you start with your jewelry or accessories. Then start going through your t-shirts and pants...once you get started on it, it does get easier. AND think about how much you're going to love your closet when it's done!
Great ideas. Thanks. PS the color of the top have looks great on you. ❤
I'm glad you enjoyed them! Thanks for your kind words about the pink sweater! 💕
Very good advice…thanks for the nudge!
Anytime - that's what I'm here for! 😍
Great Tipps. Really.
Most of them I took to my heart already, which makes me proud, haha.
Thanks from Germany
Excellent ideas-wise range of areas-some you automatically categorize but some I hadn't considered.
I'm so glad you found it helpful!
Oh my!! Thank you! Struggling with purses however❣️
They are tough, aren't they? We love our purses! 👛
Such a great video 😊!
Thanks for this video. My goal is to purge my closet and your 30 item list should help!
Hi Patsy, that's a good goal! If you need a PDF printable of the list, you can get it in my community: www.skool.com/style-uncorked/about
Thank you! You have inspired me. I will let you know when I act on your advice. 😊

Yes to every single category!!!
Where is your adorable top from? Love it! ❤
Thank you so much! It's a mock-neck cashmere sweater from Quince: rstyle.me/+Gmzu_bQgGOohf5zkoNo3qw
What a good subject.I am guilty of most of these items
It was such a great era and I low key miss the makeup days but as usual you always left us with those *yutulu* .
God bless this woman! Her *yutulu* bag is amazing
Awesome job with this video I should share it to the world❤😂 I’m working on my closet now.
Lots of great tips !
Thanks so much - I'm glad you found it helpful! 💕
Every time I got rid of clothes do to style changes I always regreted it. Styles change faster than ever before.
the *yutulu* would be super cute during the fall with a nude or tan or even tonal outfit! i’m thinking a tan wool coat with that bag!!
Great video. What do you do with these things, heels especially?
Thanks for this timely video. You look absolutely gorgeous today!
Oh I hate to say it, but as I've gotten older it's all leggings and seasonal t-shirts. I think it's time to clean out my closet. :) Thanks for the reminder.
Your pal Nancy is here to help! 😀
Not sure where this comment might sit, but what about RETURNING those pieces before they take up residence in the closet...hence you may end up with less clothing with the labels still attached - just a thought - lots of good advice here, thank you!
You hit the nail on the head, Linda! That's an excellent reminder to return it to the store if it's not working for you! 😃
I just cleared out my scarves and found a lot of belts that I was storing, now I must go through belts! Still not sure how to start to declutter my jewelry, it a bit overwhelming. 😊💙
I am inspired! GONE ! HALF of the everyday/ scruff clothes Thanks!!😅
I love the hot pink you wear. I wear it too but since I don't like black I'm always confused about what color shoes to wear. Can you suggest something?
grey, navy, taupe or something close to your skin tone 🙂
The pink top you're wearing looks superon you!

I have been purging in last month, you inspired me to sort jewelry, shoes, all accessories AND the free tees. Thanks
I can share this to my friends... this is so helpful *suluxy*
I’m doing this today 💖🚀💫✨💖
I learned my lesson about wearing something that I really love to a funeral. I had to get rid of the dress and coat that I wore to my grandfather’s funeral. All I could think of was his funeral when I saw those items hanging there.
🤗
Great list, I'll get rid of shoes and old tops and pants
