- G Loomis have launched their new range of Fly Rods, The Asquith, available in Saltwater and Freshwater. Gavin was loaned a 8wt Saltwater for a few days to play with so we took it to the park for an independent product test. Gavin chooses not to be a pro staffer to enable him to be unbiased in all his product reviews.

My first time entering your store today. Can't wait to get started with this awesome sport and hobby!
It's a rather wonderful hobby, Debby and Gavin
Let me start by saying I'm a fan of the Asquith 4 weight and 5 weight, which I own. I just added the 7 weight to my collection. Telluride Anglers says its possibly the best 7 weight fly rod ever made, and one of the 3 best rods of the Asquith series. However, its not particularly light, at exactly 4 ounces. That's precisely the same weight as the 2 piece 7 weight Loomis IMX from 30 years ago. And at 4 ounces, its considerably heavier than a 7 weight TFO Axiom-2X weighing 3.5 ounces (which I also own). In my hands, the Axiom-2X casts just as far, but is better at 30' than the Asquith, which is barely beginning to load. So the Axiom-2X is a sweeter rod to cast, at a third the price. And the TFO has alignment dots on the ferrules, an alignment sighter on the reel seat, and a bag with the rod model and details embroidered on it. You'd think they can match this on a $2000 rod.
Nonetheless, thanks for putting this video together.
Cheers, Ryan, Adelaide.
Hi Ryan, I heard the same thing from a mate about the 7wt. But My take on the 7wt is it's purely a Saltwater Rod, & the 4 , 5 & 6 are For Freshwater. For me Actual Weight of the rod is never considered as the reels I use are heavy , so good info about weight of the Asqquith 7wt.
I to like the Axiom-2X , It's also a popular product in the shop. TFO is a great company with great support for there retailers.
As Lefty Kreh said - To be a better fly fisher don't change your rod brand just go out get a lesson. Even the great Golfers / Tennis Players are coached. I am constantly getting having my casting physics checked as well as regular practise.
Safe to say this mate can cast.
Hi sure can, but as a FFF casting instructor and fly fishing guide he knows and uses the principles & physics he was taught by some of the great fly casters and fly casting tutors, he had the privilege of being instructed by Joan Wolf and Billy Pate.
@@tienflyoutfitters That explains it! 😊
I wish they made a 10' 7wt.
Fantastic review thoroughly impressed with your review style
thank you
cheers, it was done off the hoof an an iPhone,
Nice presentation, Gavin. Are Loomis offering a lifetime guarantee to replace broken sections when you bust them on the boat?
No Chris, they will be offering a years manufacturing warranty and a new tip for about $165
Ahhhh .. Stopper where you been ?? Great to hear from you again. I've been grounded with a new hip. Just finished running it in & now I get to drive it like I stole it. Hope your well & we get to chase tuna again together very soon. Gavin
I suppose you’d only review saltwater rods? I’m thinking of purchasing the Asquith 6wt for NZ. Wondering whether you’ve tried that rod and if yes, are your impressions as good as for this 8wt? Thank you.
Hi there, Gavin isn't available right now, I'll catch up with him this afternoon and get back to you with his response. I filmed him doing this review, there was no rehearsing it was all very genuine and what you see is what happened. He is not affiliated with G Loomis but we are selling the rod in our store amongst a heap of other rods. Debby
@@tienflyoutfitters Thank you Debby. Yes I’m curious to know whether the 6wt is as good in its category as the 8wt is in saltwater. Also, could the 7wt rod be used in freshwater or is it too stiff?
@@cachi-7878the 7 weight is too stiff. It's definitely a canon for saltwater, -unless you want to overline it with a 8 or 9 line and throw big flies at cod. But there are rods more suited to that than bastardising an Asquith.
@@Strontyum I was thinking a 6wt for NZ…
Do you think that’s a suitable rod for that place/fish?
@@cachi-7878 i have the 4, 5, and 7 weights in the Asquiths, but I have not cast the 6 weight. Its reputedly the softest rod of the Asquith series, and that may make it ideal. Read Telluride Anglers review. I'd be taking 2 specialist rods to NZ: a heavy dry fly rod (potentially the 6wt Asquith) and a longer 9 1/2 to 10 foot rod for nymphing. Plus back ups, if space allowed.
what line did you use on this test? what cast best on this rod? TIA.
Hi there I used an old SA Bonefish line, an SA Titan intermediate is a great line for this rod. We have the G Loomis Rods and Lines in stock at our shop, www.tienfly.com Gavin
@@tienflyoutfitters thanks for your reply Gavin. You made that cast looks so easy. I got the rod already after watching your video.
got the 7wt - awesome
Is the 7wt a saltwater rod as well? Wondering whether it would be too stiff for freshwater…
@@cachi-7878 The saltwater rods can happily be used in freshwater, although for delicate fishing the lighter rods will be more suited. Debby
@@cachi-7878 I use mine for lake fishing. So easy in the hand and throws shooting heads and intermediate clear line way out. Haven't used it in rivers but on big water and in windy conditions would be great. It goes best with a half weight heavy 6wt floater. My other rods are gathering dust. Just a real pleasure to cast.
@@stevelewis7459 Sorry for taking a while to answer , just got a new hip!! I love my Loomis rods. Gavin
