Happy 5th Anniversary and a massive thank you for all your hard work that goes into not only keeping such an amazing aquarium , but also into your very helpful tutorials !!! Please do not stop 😉
Congratulations Marc !!!! It's great to see a reef older then a year or two ...Can't wait for the 10 year anniversary ( YEAAAHHH ) !!!!! Marc i really appreciate your channel and all the good information that you share with fellow dedicated (Obsessed ) hobbyists..... THANK YOU Marc for sharing !!!!!
Love your video's Marc. Thanks for sharing them, they are helpful and entertaining. My own tank is just turning 4 years old. It's not as big or well appointed as yours is but I get a lot of pleasure from it. Again, thanks for sharing.
New sub here.. Sir I must say this is maybe my 3rd or 4th video I've seen from your channel and all I can say at this point is that I'm beyond blown away.. I kept freshwater aquariums from the age of 10 till right around 30 years old when I decided to take a break when we moved to an apartment so my daughter could attend a specific school district and well I'm 40 now so that break went much longer than I planned lol. Anyway I was recently given a 20 gallon tank with just about everything id need to start freshwater but have caught this crazy bug called saltwater or marine aquarium hobby so have yet to decide what to do with the 20 gallon. Working with a very low budget so will probably be some time yet before I can act on any decisions but I would absolutely love to attempt keeping a reef or coral aquarium. After watching this particular video I've realized just how much I don't know about marine biology whatsoever, sadly. But as with all things we can learn, eventually lol. Curious tho about what you might estimate your setups would or about what you think you have spent so far? At first I thought easily over 20 thousand but after this video I think I'm probably off by 70-80 thousand? Anyway sorry for the long comment but again I'm blown away by the complexity of your system and feel like I need to take a few classes before even thinking about starting my voyage. I'll definitely be tuning in for your next uploads. #Amazing!!
Hi Joe. There is a lot to learn, and everything you know about freshwater doesn't apply in saltwater. Literally different worlds. That being said, you totally can do it. My channel covers a lot of topics, and my website has a bunch of practical articles you can read on any topic. The more you learn before you spend your money, the better. Regarding the cost of my own setup, I crunched some numbers a few years ago. Generally speaking, I tell people that it costs $47 per gallon to set up a reef tank with quality equipment before you add any water or livestock. (I have an article spelling that out, too.) A lot of what I did with my reef was DIY, which saved money but took longer naturally. The longevity of what I built is what makes that worth the effort. I'm coming up on the 6th anniversary of this aquarium in about 20 days. :)
Dude I think this is my favourite video ever from you. It is definitely the best shirt I have seen you in. It fits you perfectly and you look super trim in it - you should buy 10 of them. I love the tank and the no filter look at the start. Lot's of great tips too especially at the end - perfect ;)
additional traffic will be coming this way, thanks Jake @ Reefbuilders: reefbuilders.com/2018/11/13/anatomy-of-a-mature-successful-five-year-old-reef-tank/
Congrats! I just went to the Long Island Aquarium and met Joe. He took me to the back and I got to feed the fish at the 20k gallon reef display. It was awesome! I’m pretty sure he has or will send you a picture.
Glad you got to meet him. I sat on that gantry throwing in one pellet at a time. He told me I could use more, but my method assured that I could just keep tossing in one pellet at a time forever, and not get in trouble with him. lol
Congrats on the five years! I do not keep aquariums, but I really do enjoy learning about reefs. Great video as always, looking forward to the content that was cut :-)
This is a fantastic tank tour, thank you for walking us through your system! That side view of the 400g tank from the Anemone tank is breathtaking. And holy smokes, that sump is a mad scientist's lab... I already have a phobia towards having to talk someone through trouble shooting my simple system when I am not home; I cannot imagine what sort of instruction you would have to give in order to remotely debug an issue. o__O
From time to time, I just have to really get in there and clean it out. But first, I need to mix up a big batch of saltwater so I'm ready to replace all that is sucked out. I'm in the mood to do it lately, so in a few weeks I'll have a cleaner sump once more.
Whew,I'm glad I broke the reef habit.. I can just admire a great tank like that now. How do you resist the "Just one more fish" syndrome.-ha. I still have that with my 240G freshwater Rainbow-tetra tank. Hard to stop.
Congrats at 5 years Marc! Gotta say though the filter makes you look quite a bit more "orange" like you can from the Jersey Shores :D That said I know what it's like to "finish" the stand, I had a 180g tank that once I got the tank on the stand's frame literally 100% of my attention went to the tank and not the stand at all... don't get me wrong the tank looked fabulous but it was standing on a bunch of framing lumber (not even a nice powdered coated steel stand like you!). My next tank, ironically a Marineland deep dimension as well, I'm really going slowly because I'm getting all the stand stuff done before water hits the tank.
Congrats and as we say here - "100 more years!" The best of luck and health to all your fish, corals and anemones as well. Also sorry if this has been asked before - what is the secret behind having multiple tangs in the tank? Have you introduced them all at the same time?
weak sauce, step up your game dude.. just kidding happy 5th anniv!! your setup is crazy $$$, i love the anenome tank i can stare at it for days...if you ever have time, please tell us how you set up the skimmer auto shutoff, and what happens if you did not have it? and why arent you using the blank manifold to feed the reactor instead of that pump? your expertise will help me build my system in the future heh
Okay, I'll make a video about that, because it's super helpful. Regarding the manifold, I was feeding three things: carbon, biopellets, and the calcium reactor. However, I'm down to just running carbon, and I got the new Kamoer pump for the calcium reactor because for some strange reason with the manifold it just wasn't giving me a consistent feed.
Breathtaking. At the end you mention needing to do some fragging to protect the corals from one another. Do you have a video showing how to go about doing this?
Shut the front door🤭 Congrats on the 5 year mark, Marc 👍 .. I remember the crisis days of old tank down and build of new. I also remember the losing a trailer on the freeway,... Egads, that could have been very bad, aka prison bad if it hit some other car behind you 🙁 Someone was looking out for you that day 👆👆👆 I always wonder when feeding time s/b for SPS and LPS with fauna powder type foods ? Do corals uptake most lights out or beginning of day or full light blasting? We need a video on why in the world you have CARX ph at 6.1 😗🤔😧🤕, I thought below 6.3 equals milkshake ☹️ Also saw your CO2 blinking like an incoming torpedo ☹️
It's usually good to feed the corals during lights out, when the fish are asleep and less likely to devour it. The finer the food, the less that matters though. With my reactor, usually I run it between 6.1 and 6.3, that doesn't turn it to mush. I run about 2 bubbles per second in my regulator.
Congrats on 5 years Marc! I feel like I just watched your 4 year video and how you were upset that it was so empty compared to your 3 year video. At 14:59, I see you still haven't figured out how to make your gorgonian stand up. haha Is that because Joe wasn't comfortable giving you advice on how to make it stand up? All jokes aside you have a beautiful reef tank. Keep the videos coming!
Love this tank - can’t believe you’re running an abyzz pump and instead of a chiller you have a computer fan haha If my tank looks anything like this after 5 years I’ll be a happy man!
Spock eats some of it, but she's kinda lazy. I'm not really too concerned about it, except when I take pictures and video and people mention it. lol! (Not mad at you for bringing it up, I swear)
I love fish, I want a big fish tank like yours but I know I wouldn’t be responsible enough to keep it clean. Nor do I have the space or money. So you have a new fan because I love your fishies! (This sounds like a child wrote it so even if it’s weird to say, I’m 16... it’s just 2 in the morning)
Great video man. Congratulation on 5 years 👌 On your calcium reactor does your Carbon doser CO2 regulator plug into you ph control, the is the carbon does turned on and off by the ph controller?
The Milwaukee pH controller (green thing with the 6.1 display) provides power to (or stops sending power to) the Aquarium Plants Carbon Doser (aka electronic regulator). When it doesn't have power, the CO2 is stopped with a solenoid switch. When power is present, CO2 can flow.
melevsreef thanks for the reply it’s very much appreciated. So does the carbon doser work as a co2 regular or do you have a co2 regular as well as the carbon doser?
Your love of this hobby shines as bright as the sun.
Thanks so much for sharing your amazing reef, and letting us share your enjoyment!
I really enjoyed this update.. Everyone was setup so well and easy to maintain that it just runs itself!
Exactly!
There are too few words to describe how exceptionally beautiful your tanks are. Thank you for sharing.
those fish are very lucky to have an owner like you.... you’re passionate about their care and happiness
Happy 5th Anniversary and a massive thank you for all your hard work that goes into not only keeping such an amazing aquarium , but also into your very helpful tutorials !!! Please do not stop 😉
Getting better and better every year. You are a valuable youtube reefer Marc, thanks for all the content. May you have luck for years to come!
Happy 5th anniversary! Beautiful natural looking reef tank. Thanks for all the amazing work and dedication you have for this hobby
Happy reefing, always enjoy watching your reef and all the beauty it beholds.
Nice video. Thanks for including us in the 5 years celebration.
I'm new to the hobby, just got a 40 gallon, I appreciate your dedication and passion !

I love the fishes reaction to feeding time!! It’s not like they could smell it but they anyway all swam to you. Wow!
Congratulations on the 5th Anniversary. I always enjoy a look at your tank and setting. Cheers!
Absolutely phenomenal all-round! And that floater box.. almost as brilliant as the walk board.
I like to think of good ideas. 😇
Just hit my 1 year anniversary for my reef! I Love your reef man!
Looks good you are giving us a good view of your 400 reef. Congratulations on 5 years.
You can tell your heart and soul is in the tank. Super AMAZING!!

Congratulations on your amazing tank. Thank you for sharing, I watch all your videos.
Looks great Marc. Thanks for the tour and congrats. 👍

Beautiful setup! Happy 5 year anniversary!
Wow Marc the reef is looking really awesome. Love the under water shots.
You do alot for the reef community, thank you so very much.💜👌

Congrats on the 5 year anniversary. I remember what you went through with that tank in the beginning. I miss that monster leather coral you had.
Beautiful Marc. Happy Anniversary 🌹
Gorgeous my friend!!! Absolutely paradise
VEry nice mark. I never realized the number of fish until feeding time!
You're playing with fire there with the open top, Marc. Congrats on 5 years
All my tanks are open top, it's been like that since 2004.
@@melevsreef Have you lost any from jumping?
@@OnTheReef Yes he has, all three people that jumped in are gone now, Lol!!

Great tanks! I like your electronic island stand I thought I was the only one to do that lol😅
Beautiful tank

The trick is having an awesome tank sitter. :) And a little luck.
Beautiful tank , wow so many worms in that sump, must be hard to clean without sucking them all out!
From time to time, I just have to really get in there and clean it out. But first, I need to mix up a big batch of saltwater so I'm ready to replace all that is sucked out. I'm in the mood to do it lately, so in a few weeks I'll have a cleaner sump once more.

Wow that’s a dream tank!
Tank looks beautiful 👍👍
Happy 5th Anniversary!!!

Do you have to dose your anemone tank?
I dose the entire system with Prodibio, and run a calcium reactor for alkalinity and calcium. Magnesium is dosed as well.
Living the dream keep it up !
Man i'm about to start my first 90 gallon reef....and i thought that was going to be a lot of work. :')

Melev, why do you not use sock filters in your sump? It would keep the detritus from collecting in your sump.
