Bubble Tip Anemones - What you need to know

  • Discussing the various needs of this species of anemones should help you keep one (or more) healthy in your reef for many years to come. The original BTA was purchased back in 2002 and is with me to this day, and the original Rose BTA was acquired in 2007. I've seen all the fun things they do, including splitting, spawning, climbing everywhere - and of course hosting happy clownfish around the clock. Here are some links to previous BTA vidoes:

    I honestly cant remember the last time i saw a video on youtube that was so informative and noteworthy. This guy not only seems like an incredible human being, and passionate to a fault, but this HAS TO BE the most valuable source of info on the web in (LAMENS TERMS) available to the public wanting to learn about housing anemones. Thanks bro!

    The bubbles go away because of flow.. high flow stretches the tentacles, low flow will keep them bubbly 👍🏼

    • @josef956
      @josef956 2 роки тому +3

      not exactly correct, mine was bubbled when bought then around 5 months become fairly and last 4 month that clown hosting it become bubble again for no reason nothing changed in the tank

      I can attest to this theory, I ramped up a powerhead 1k gph and my BTA lost its bulbs and when I lowered the flow to 750 gph it regained its bulbs.

      This makes total sense. If the flow is low, they inflate (bubbles) to help keep their tentacles up and flowing.

    My clowns hosted after showing them videos on my phone. It happened over night. I propped the phone up and started a playlist. The list of videos I picked were clowns that looked like mine, hosting an anenome that looked like mine. I ran about an hour of videos. They reacted to the video. Moving away and watching. Then they showed interest in the anemone. The next day they were hosting.

    Hi Melevsreef, I love your videos and they are very informational and I have similar story how I got into saltwater tank. I had 10 gallon freshwater tank and I bought few fishes from petco and fishes died and I took them back to store for credit and I started asking questions for saltwater 12 gallon bio cube they had in the store from one of the workers in that department and he said I can't keep freshwater fish alive I should not think about saltwater.. It felt bad and I kind of took that as a challenge and I started 30 gallon tank with live rock now I own 250 gallon display with 2 - 75 gallons sumps and 40 gallon frag tank and best part is that whole setup is built by me and buddy of mine with plywood..

    I have my black widows splitting a lot on me with very stable water parameters 😀.
    I started with one like 3 years back and had over 30 so far (sold some of course) I even got a nano cube to be like an overflow for anemones in my 75. I think it is because I give them strong light (400-450 par) and a specific food I feed them (proprietary and you will not find it in the reefing hobby lol).
    Happy reefing and happy new year.

    I added my first BTA to my 120 gal SW tank. You were just the person I needed to hear. I did not know what signs to look for when he poops. I thought maybe it was something bad, but in every other way he looks great and has a beautiful florescent green glow about him. He found a spot in a cavernous area where the water has the circulation he was looking for I guess. He can go into his cavern from the back or the front of the reef. I look forward to more of your videos.

    I have an unofficial rule… I don’t watch YT videos longer than 3 to 5 minutes. It has to be a topic I am really interested in to go 5 minutes. I just watched your 20+ minute video on an organism I don’t plan to have. You offered a one minute video at the end and I was like: “Yeah! Yeah!” Great video.! I am a new subscriber and hope one day to get my dream tank.
    I started with a ten gallon nano because I knew nothing about it and thought keeping something alive that was already thriving should be possible. I learned after buying it that you don’t start small! For several months I had the most wonderful time getting to know all the little people and their schedules. I loved each one like a family member. Then Hurricane Florence made a direct hit on my community. I had had to evacuate. No electric for five days. No generator. I knew what to expect when I came back but it didn’t make it easier. I won’t even go in that part of the house. I have been shopping for a house with the right room for the hobby. And a bodacious generator! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. M.

    • @melevsreef
      @melevsreef  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the well thought-out reply. I do have some shorter videos on my channel, but most knowledge requires time to absorb information that you can then use, so the video is longer than your personal desire. You might try binging the Reef Diary series I made. Average time per episode is about 4 minutes. Or tackle the bigger topics addressed in the livestreams. Those look long, but the first portion tends to be the topic, and the latter half I spend answering audience questions from the live chat.
      What size is your dream tank? Good luck making that happen.

      @@melevsreef I was so engrossed in the video I did not want it to end! Now I am investigating what anemones live near me on the NC coast. (I am a 30 minute drive to the ocean.) I have snorkeled in our sounds (what Northerners call “bays”) but I have never seen an anemone. I have spent many, many hours snorkeling (it’s a lifelong passion) throughout the Florida Keys, Bahamas and Caribbean. I have never seen a seahorse or octopus. It hasn’t been for lack of trying. Apparently we do have all three in NC!
      I grew up in Key West, FL so have seen beautiful anemones. I certainly was not expecting to find anything like that in my area! My desire for a marine aquarium comes from my longing to live in a tropical area where I can snorkel year round. Wouldn’t need an aquarium then. I literally spent the majority of my childhood in water up to my knees watching sea life. Moving from Key West was heartbreaking. Once I was able to afford it, I spent my vacations snorkeling. I no longer travel due to my health and age so a marine aquarium is as close as I will get to the tropics.
      My dream tank? Oh my, I am guessing 600 gallons. Fat chance of that happening! I have already purchased a 30 gallon, again before doing any homework. I know better now. It will probably serve as a support tank for corals or other sea life. I will be thrilled to have a 100 gallon.
      I have only scanned the titles of your other videos so far but saw there were many regarding Hawaii. My father was in the US Navy and was stationed in Oahu when I was 1 to 3.5 yo. I still remember it. That’s how we came to be in Key West. I had the life every kid should have until he died as a result of service. We then moved to NC where both of my parents were from. Thankfully, they were from a state on the ocean. I can not move more than an hour away. No matter where I have lived, there had to be water close by. 😊. The only thing I have ever seen in this area that I was tempted to collect were some sea squirts. Made me remember the sea cucumbers that were plentiful in Key West. As it turns out, there are sea squirts on every post sticking up from the sand. Once, on a very small rock jetty, on one of the Outer Banks islands, I saw a small purple and gold damsel fish. Up until that point, I honestly did not believe we have tropical reef fishes 60 feet down off of our coast. Just doesn’t seem possible!
      Since you love anemones you should watch a video of anemones posted on YT from South Africa. I had no idea anemones came in such colors. The video is of excellent quality as are all of his videos. I haven’t watched all of them yet but the ones from Cape Town and the Red Sea are simply unbelievable! His channel name is Life’s too Short and the video is: Kalkbay Harbour Wall Cape Town ua-cam.com/video/ES-9v695jEY/v-deo.html.
      Thank you again for sharing your knowledge. I truly appreciated your kindness when discussing the care and division of the anemones. (I do not think people understood why losing the creatures in my tank was so devastating to me. Some people do not place a high value on life. I got my undergraduate degree in Biology because I am the opposite. I also chose research in the pharmaceutical industry for my career, particularly in development of anti-cancer and anti-viral drugs.) I know I will learn a lot from you. Merk

    Bubble tips loose there swelling due to lack of algae in the water. Its the water changes &/or the skimmer.
    They swell as they absorb free floating algae from the water.

    • @Berbs73
      @Berbs73 7 років тому +10

      Kaul Watson
      I find this super hard to believe. I have five bubble tips and they are as massive as the ones in his tank. I also have a huge green hair algae problem. I've been removing it for the past year or so. There has never been a shortage of algae in my tank.

    • @kaulwatson8954
      @kaulwatson8954 7 років тому +4

      If you Bubble Tips are swollen then it is possible they have all ready taken in as much algea as thay can.
      If they are not swollen then your water would be very clean with no floating algea in the water for the the Bubble Tips asorb.

      @sashimiturtle 7 років тому +7

      The tentacles stretch out and lose the bubbles when they are hungry and or don't have adequate lighting. Feed them or increase the lights and the tentacles should retract back and regain the bubble tips.

    • @Berbs73

      Robin Haselden I find that hard to believe. I feed mine all the time and they still remain stretched out.

      @nes4701 7 років тому +8

      Lies.. No one knows why they lose and form bubbles in the tips not even scientists, just a bunch of theories. I've seen them in low flow/light and high flow/light with bulbs and in pristine clean tanks and dirty tanks with and without bulbs on their tips.

      Yes, that is correct. They don't need to capture big meaty foods and can subsist of particulates in the water, or whatever the clownfish bring back to their 'home' - lighting also plays a role in their survival, providing a different type of nutrition.

    Hey Man! Cool video. I have had the same experience with Anemones than you. I wanted to drop you a line because people do actually know about bubble expression in BTAs and honestly, its pretty easy to find. Basically, the brighter the light, the more bubbles they will express while the deeper and darker, the longer and less bubbly the nem.

      Jorden Watkins You will be fine. They will keep your anemone alive. Notice how he only has his radions at 80% on their peak for only a few moments. A lot of pricier LEDs have ramping features and program-ability that costs a lot to develop and manufacture. Ive seen pretty good tanks with a couple of those chinese light sets over them. Now, I have no idea how long those fixtures will last.

      I have 2 of the Chinese fixtures running for a few months now. So far I've had pretty decent growth from stony coral, no telling how long they will last tho at 85$ a piece. I definitely have my eye on radions when my budget allows

    Anemones tend to keep their bubble tips when they are disturbed by predation (angels picking at the tips can do it) or some water quality parameters that are suboptimal. I used to cut these anemones for sale, and often after I cut, they would bubble up for a little while. As they healed, the tentacles would relax and the bubble tips went away.

    I suppose a 1 min recap would be nice at the end of some videos, with quick mentions of any new stock added.
    Something that came to mind when listening to the "advice" you received years back: when it comes to any technical aspect in the hobby, it appears to me that there are many people who are all too eager to claim what can't be done, but very few who can give information on why they think that to be the case. Understanding how and why something works will go further in building ones understanding of the aquarium hobby than just being told "don't do it". Your videos do a good job of relaying helpful first hand experience.

      When an anemone bleaches out, it's either water quality or lighting, but usually lighting. Either too much light for too longer per day, or not nearly enough to sustain the symbiotic zooxanthellae within. What size tank was it in, under what lighting?

    Great video! Sadly I've lost two anemonies. The first one lasted about six months, the second about nine. My maroon clown goes orgasmic almost as soon as I put them in the tank. I look at your tank and think WOW, that's a lot of flow, but now I'm thinking that the reason I lost my previous two is because of low flow in my tank. I'm going to step up the flow, and use your tank as a visual guide to set mine up. Thank you!!

    Hi Melev, We cross path several times in the past 14 years of hobby, At first was in RC where we suffered the same fate. Been following you ever since, lurking behind your success. Congrats on your beautiful anemone tank.
    Unfortunately, my 14 year old tank, falls to the category of what you are saying... "something is wrong with your tank".... I wanted them HUGE but they do not get big. Once they become as big as 6".... they split. And they keep splitting. I probably sold more than 100 of these in the past 14 years of hobby, and i still have 15 in my tank right now.
    Luckily, I have them bubbled. And they have been like that ever since i had one. I stopped worrying about my parameters since I cannot figure it out why they dont grow big. And i stopped complaining and just enjoying their beauty.
    Again congrats....

    When I acclimated my RBTA I put a descent size piece of rubble into the acclimation tank and place the nem on it. did about an hour and a half acclimation and the foot settled in a good spot. Once I'd seen how the nem was seated I found a nice spot and place the rock. I put it so the nem was inside the rocks in the shade but with access to flow and to light. He's getting some light through the open pockets above him. If you can, try doing your acclimation with an appropriate sized rock and then you can place your rock.

I would rather leave that time for more info. These videos are usually so short (even a 30 min video is really just a small look into someone's week) that I don't think it's needed at the end of the video. I'm pretty new to a reef tank, so take anything I say with a grain of salt:)
    So, first of all, thanks for the video. I'm so worried that my BTA close up and spew brown mucus pretty much daily. I worry even more when it does that in the middle of broad day light.
    I feed the tank, I don't target feed anything. Though I may start target feeding the mandarin. I never see him eat anything.
    So here is my story on the BTA. When I had a 5W LED and a 50W halogen on it, it opened up. I thought it was beautiful with slightly green spaghetti looking tentacles.
    One day my 165W LED light arrived from amazon (I'm sure it's one of those chinese lights that these guys just happen to have stock in california). An hour after i turn this thing on at 40% power (on whites), the tips all bubbled up. It has kept those big bubbles ever since.
    It still deflates everyday. I'm still stressed every time I see it deflate and spewing brown mucus. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.

    • @melevsreef
      @melevsreef  9 років тому

      ***** The brown stringy stuff coming out of its mouth is excess zooxanthellae, more than likely. You can google that. Corals (and anemones) will do this if they have too much, OR if they are stressed... they can expel all of it to the point the subject looks bleached, but if yours still retains most of the normal color then what you are seeing is normal and okay. Zooxanthellae is a symbiotic algae that lives within the tissue of the host subject, making the anemone brown, green, or reddish. If the anemone becomes very pale or looks mostly white now, it has ejected the algae. It would need to be fed every few days until it can regrow new to replace what it got rid of.
      Regarding feeding mandarins, here's my article showing a method that worked great for me: melevsreef.com/node/720

    • @FlyingPigNJ
      @FlyingPigNJ 9 років тому +1

      yup, there is a bit of it...size of a nickle....not getting stringy....I literally increased the light by 1600%. Although it's the light level others have used, I'm going to scale way back to get the bta acclimated.
      It's just my observation that more light = bigger bubble tip:) Now I just need to find the right starting point and ramp it up so I don't stress this thing out too much.

      That's the challenge. If I only talk about a big reef, will others benefit? Then again, a big reef is actually a bunch of small tanks connected to a common sump, minus all those walls. I ran a 29g for seven years, and it was far easier to keep compared to the current system I'm maintaining.

  • @jamesmatthewsim3071
    @jamesmatthewsim3071 6 років тому +2

    The bubbles are to shade the other parts of the anemone to prevent bleaching because if you put it under too much light the zooxanthellae grows too much and it expels the zooxanthellae and bleaches whereas the thin tentacles are to increase the photosynthesis but tell me if it doesnt work

    They are awesome creatures!! We tore down and sold off our 180G reef last year but had begun over 10 years ago with a tiny bubble tip anemone in a nano. A few aquarium upgrades and knowledge later, many years, and all the way from PC lighting, MHs, and then LEDs and it split twice, and we ended up with 2 giant ones about the size of yours and had sold 2 others that are still healthy to this day. They are VERY hardy...of course I was always pretty particular about the water quality. I noticed that they would retract somewhat during the dark hours, and have some "bubbles" but would turn into the giant swaying around creature that you have now during the lighting hours...haha.
    They have hosted several species of clowns over their lifetime... I remember some of the Clarkis we had for a bit really defended the anemone pretty aggressively from my hand being in the tank cleaning. Lots of non painful but "catch you off guard" little scares from the clowns protecting their home.
    Have yours done the spawning cycle? We had a few incidents of the giant anemones releasing giant clouds of what I assume was sperm. It would fog up the entire 180g tank and make my skimmer unhappy for a few days but that only happened on a few occasions.

    • @melevsreef
      @melevsreef  9 років тому

      Nice job on keeping anemones so long.
      Yes, I've observed both kinds of spawning. If you go to the video description, you'll find a link to an older video clip showing anemone EGGS as well as the smokey sperm you've observed. My skimmer worked overtime to get the water quality back on track those nights.

    Very good video, it’s probably the most informative one about BTAs you can ever get out there. But one interesting fact is that BTAs never hosts ocellaris and perculas in the wild, rather clarkiis, frenatus ans similar species. So in for personal preference I don’t like putting ocellaris and perculas in BTAs because it just look off to me. Ocellaris and perculas I think would do better in long tentacle anemones, aurora anemone and Stichodactly anemones just to name a few as they do host these anemonefish species in the wild

    Hi Melev. Im so obsessed with bubble tip anemones. I've watched this video 20 times in the past 2 weeks. I have a nem tank. I think the reason why my nems bulb up has to do with flow and feeding. Mainly flow. If it is happily fed and the flow is perfect, it will bulb up. I found that rose btas and forest fire bta arent fully bulbed as they look- very rare to have that happen. My nems have no clowns in it.
