    This tank and video a couple of years ago literally inspired my way back into reef aquariums and I was sad a few weeks ago to learn of Jake's passing. Hope your tank is still around Luis!

    Jake, thank you for your dedication to this lifestyle. I've been a Reefer for 30 years. I was so impressed with Luis's tank and results, I ordered a new Red Sea XL 300 G2 Reefer. I bought all top notch equipment and ordering the Illumagic Blaze 90 tomorrow. Now comes the fun part, setting it all up! Thanks again, Jake! Luis, incredible job and I think Red Sea should add your name to the 250 as the Luis Rosa signature series!

    One of the best tanks on ReefBuilders YT for sure. I love how this type of tank is easily attainable for most people. I love those gigantic tanks with huge fishrooms but 99% of us will never even consider tanks like that. This is a great example of a tank that is not too big but can still be a centerpiece in your home and have awesome corals.

    "Don't chase the numbers".
    Some of the best advise available in the hobby. My best ever reef tank I ever owned ran by itself, I hardly ever tested the water, never did many water changes, but the acros grew like weeds. Plus if you're busy chasing the numbers, you'll never have time to enjoy your tank for what it is!

      Thanks Mat! This is at the top of my list labeled: "Lessons Learned"!!!

    • @theskeletonboi

      I think it's good advise for stress free tank maintenance.
      However, when I started heavy testing and dosing, my corals started growing at incredible speeds and look better than ever. If you have the patience and time, it's always a good idea to chase the numbers. I can't go back to regular tank maintenance anymore, the number chasing offers too many benefits.

    Loving this setup and tank! Very good tip to beginners to not chase the numbers. I used to do that when I started because everyone on forums told me I didn't have the correct values in my tank and thats why my corals wouldnt grow. When I stopped chasing the numbers and just watched the corals if they were happy, I became so much more succesful :)

    THIS TANK IS AMAZING!! I think its the perfect size tank, not too small but not too large in terms of stability and maintenance. One thing that stands out to me is that green slimer! I've had a 1" frag of green slimer for almost a year now and its not doing anything but encrusting. How do you get yours to branch soooo perfectly?!

    • @LuisBe19
      @LuisBe19 6 років тому +1

      Thanks @Codym808 ! I have found that the green slimer loves flow and will probably take as much light as you can give it. Also, like a lot of frags, they won't grow like crazy until it has encrusted and built a good sturdy foundation on the rock. So be patient, I think you're on the right track! Oh, and food...feed your reef!

    Next question!! Bit of background first - I have a good LFS and have for the last couple of years admired their RedSea 170 set up. It looks great and the corals look tremendous. So my logic was - if I copy their set up totally I will be able to achieve a similar outcome. I’m having some building work done so I’ve just been buying bits in readiness. One of the pieces I’ve already bought is a Bio Pellet Reactor by TMC - I went to the shop today and was advised that the Clarisea (which they don’t stock) did a similar job (although I didn’t speak to my usual man and wasn’t totally convinced by the answer!). Can you comment please? - apologies if it’s a silly question but I’m a true beginner trying to get it right from the word go. Thanks Mark

    • @LuisBe19
      @LuisBe19 5 років тому

      Hi Mark, The only thing I can make of his statement is that the Clarisea traps and removes waste before it has time to pollute the water column...which would give the bio pellets less to consume. Similar to what the ClariSea did to my protein skimmer. The skimmate production has been reduced almost by half!!!

    • @markbradley123
      @markbradley123 5 років тому +1

      Luis Rosa - I’ve been to the shop and measured up and there’s no way to fit a Clarisea in unless I lose the bio filter which, bearing in mind what it is supposed to do, I’d like to keep.

    Beautiful Display Louis. lets hear more on the light.

    • @LuisBe19
      @LuisBe19 6 років тому +1

      Thanks Robert! What more can I say about this light? It's awesome. So many PROS: sleek compact design, one single power cord, pucks are covered with a single piece of glass over the entire length - easy to clean, it doesn't blow out your room with light spill - this must have something do do with the silicone optics, bluetooth controllable, all spectrums look great - when I first plugged it in, all the channels came on 100%, I almost left it on that setting and called it a day! I'm very happy with coral growth & coloration, includes a hanging kit and mounting arms are available to purchase. I had to come up with something, so here are a couple CONS: (but not dealbreakers for me!) The app is a little quirky on my iPhone X, no experience with the app on android. There's a little learning curve to it, but it's not bad...set it and forget it. The other con is that the fans are audible. Compared to a Kessil 360 and a Radion XR15, the Illumagic would be the loudest. Not an issue with me at all, but I know it can be a concern for some reefers.

    Awesome tank, great video. The one thing that really caught my attention was feeding Reef Roids via the auto feeder. How does he prepare it to work well in an autofeeder
    Also, he mentions no refugium and not noticing any difference, Besides the skimmer and his Clarisea obviously being nutrient exoport, how often does he waterc hance and how much

    • @LuisBe19
      @LuisBe19 6 років тому +5

      Thank you Stian! Water changes are done just to siphon detritus and other debris off the bare bottom. Maybe 5 gallons once or twice a month.
      Here's a cut n' paste of an answer about the Reef Roids I posted earlier:
      " I actually mix equal parts Reef-Roids (or any powdered food of your choice) and PE Mysis 1mm pellets. The fine RR powder didn't exit the feeder very consistently, so I added the pellets to act as a carrier to aid in transport. The auto feeder dispenses what I would call a good pinch, barely a quarter teaspoon. So it doesn't all float away, it has to be dispensed in to a feeding ring or in my case the WaveBox. The WaveBox makes a great food dispenser...it even works great with frozen food. The idea came to me when I was getting the tank ready for a 2 week vacation. The auto feeder is perfect for feeding the fish while away, so I thought why not feed the corals while I'm away too!"

I feed reefroids and feed heavy. I now spend money on water and corals :) so many ways to get there, I find ULN tanks a knife edge!

    Beautiful reef tank!! How often did you change the water? Or the filter and the skimmer prolonged the quality of the water?

    • @LuisBe19
      @LuisBe19 6 років тому +3

      Thank you Manuel! Before going bare bottom, I rarely did water changes. Triton does a good job of keeping balance. But now, I do occasional water changes whenever I need to siphon out detritus and other debris off the bottom. Maybe 5 gallons once or twice a month. I also use a turkey baster or the AI Nero5 to flush out crud in the aquascape itself. The Clarisea is great at clearing the water column after the "storm".

    Great sump setup. Is that the original reefer 250 sump modified or did you install a totally new sump?? I want to remove the filter socks in mine and install a clarisea just wondering how you did it. Is it free standing or hanging on glass? If it's the original sump what is the rear chamber where the drain line originally dumped doing now is that empty or did you remove the glass baffle there? Any help would be great!

    • @LuisBe19
      @LuisBe19 6 років тому +1

      I cut the filter sock holder out with a utility knife blade. Once you slice up the silicone bead, it will eventually let go with a little coaxing. The rear chamber is still intact. I use a PMUP to provide flow to the chamber since this is were I have my dosing lines run to. The chamber is also full of small pieces of live rock to create a small cryptic zone. The Clarisea is free standing on the bottom and held in place by the return pipe. I wanted to hang it, but it was too high for the plumbing to make the transition from the main 32mm drain pipe. Hope that helps!

    • @77blacktrip
      @77blacktrip 6 років тому

      @@LuisBe19 it sure does thanks for the reply Luis! The clarisea is $500 AU do you think it's worthwhile investment for water quality purposes? I run a mixed reef and do get quite a bit of detritus in my sump.

    • @LuisBe19
      @LuisBe19 6 років тому

      @@77blacktrip I installed the Clarisea almost 3 months ago now and I absolutely recommend it! For the RSR250, it's the only filter roll that will easily fit in the sump with the modifications mentioned above. The stand for the Klir filter roll is now available and looks like it might fit. With these filter rolls becoming more and more popular, I'm sure we'll be seeing a vast variety of units coming to market soon. Keep me posted as to what you decide!

    How much would maintenance for this tank be per month? I’m new to this and am just wondering how much it will cost to maintain a 200 gallon or so tank per month on average for food, nutrients, etc after the initial setup!

  • @tsurro8086
    @tsurro8086 6 років тому +1

    I’m assuming that u removed filtersockholders and that extra piece of glass in that first chamber, did u use some kind of metric to national pipe size adapter to connect the schedule 80 to the Clarissea? Was it hard to remove that stuff? Thx

    • @LuisBe19
      @LuisBe19 6 років тому +1

      I left the Red Sea diaphram valve in place and used a 32mm slip x 1"FPT fitting right below it. followed by schedule 80 unions and 90's to transition to the Clarisea.
      Here is a cut and paste of an answer I gave earlier...
      "I cut the filter sock holder out with a utility knife blade. Once you slice up the silicone bead, it will eventually let go with a little coaxing. The rear chamber is still intact. The more I see the more I think the only real nutrient export you need is just a display stuffed full of corals. Obviously you need to have everything else in line, like elements, lighting, flow, to keep the corals growing and feeding on the water column, but once it is going, they seem to just do well until human error or disease is introduced. Awesome system....
