The thing is... as in any other subgenre there's good bands and bad bands. Unfortunately there's quite a few metalcore bands that I consider bad (one of them being butcher babies, although imo they're not even metalcore but w/e). But when metalcore was big and bands sprang up like mushrooms, this perception of metalcore being 'not metal' came up just as it came up with nu metal before. Yes, there were a huge bunch of 08/15 yawn metalcore bands but there also were some really good ones. I still like stuff like God Forbid, Unearth and Darkest Hour for example because they all have very unique characteristics and are actually (objectively) good musicians.

DarkObsession. Your right, I listen to obituary, death and municipal waste (to name a few) but I also like bands such as bfmv, trivium and kill-switch engage. I mean I do kind of agree with the fact that a lot of modern metalcore bands are quite ‘poppy’, which is why you see a lot of metalcore bands turn to pop... (bring me to the horizon). But I don’t agree with the fact that the sub genre as a whole is just full of posers and scene kids. I think a lot of metalcore bands actually have more songwriting and musicianship on their work then people think there are and I generally think shogun by Trivium is the greatest album of the 21st century.

I think the reason deathcore is popular (especially with younger people) is actually the way music is exposed now. It's pretty easy to find great metal if you are already indoctrinated into the sound, but otherwise you are going to be presented with less extreme things through normal channels (radio, tv, spotify, even the youtube algorithms).
Just as an anecdote, I had a student a few years back that listened to nothing but metalcore and deathcore. I asked her if she like Carcass, and she'd never heard of them, so I let hear some, and it really excited her. A few weeks later she was listening to nothing but classic death metal, and the fandom grew from there.

As someone who loves a lot of very diverse music genres, it seems inevitable that there is a lot of music I don't like. Call it whatever you want. Metalcore, Deathcore, Hardcore or any -core I've heard so far just isn't for me. Let alone utter shit like grindcore. I walked out on Napalm Death after a mere 3 minutes, because they bored the absolute shit out of me.

I agree, I can't stand it when people get way too into a certain sound and shit on everyone who doesn't agree with them like "oh you don't like this band? You're not true metal!" Just listen to what you like and what resonates with you, everyone is different, get the fuck over yourself. That being said, I think butcher babies is an absolutely terrible band, like the video said they are bland and generic and trying way too hard to be edgy, it seems to me like they just bank their ticket sales on the female vocalists who let their tits hang out during the show. Also staying on topic with the video, Ne Obliviscaris is absolutely amazing, just got into them a few months ago and they are one of the best newer bands I've heard in long time. This comment ended up being way longer than I intended haha.

As soon as I started to discover truly good metal bands I kinda abandoned metalcore and have never looked back since. Nowadays I love stuff like Vader, Deströyer 666, Exmortus, Mgla, Black Royal, Church of Misery and so many more awesome bands. theone1 i told you, it can provide an extra element in a song.
usually, most people who like more of classical metal can really feel what the solos are for, thus, they can define a good solo and a bad solo, and how a song can be better or worse with solos. good guitar solos can be considered as parts of songs that can portray emotions without relying on lyrics.
while most people who like modern metal can appreciate the music without solos, it is actually up for the listeners to like it or not, and for the artists to put a solo or not.

That goes for any metal genre, because even BM has some festering trash bands out there with hardcore simps😂 The generic TV static sound of some BM is akin to the djent breakdown of core😂

TO: Blackmetal Werewolf. Never heard of Butcher Babies, been listening to Metalcore for 8 years. Just listened to them, they fucking suck. The word "Generic" is used too much between Metalcore fans, we recognize when a band is generic. Also, all of Metalcore isn't inherently Emo, there's just a number of bands that invaded the genre with that crap. Metalcore is actually very diverse and is evolving a lot. There's bands in the Progressive Metalcore bracket who are really pushing the genre to new places. There are many types of Metalcore bands: Math Metalcore like Converge, Pop-Metalcore like Asking Alexandria(Fuck those bands), Progressive Metalcore like August Burns Red or Silent Planet, Death Metal Influenced Metalcore like As I Lay Dying, the list goes on and I'd be happy to try and direct you to the right Metalcore band for you tastes. You just have to find the good bands, and they exist I assure you. Metalcore never gets a chance because of shitty pop bands being the only reference and unjustly being representative of the entire genre. Every genre has a shit commercial version, know the difference. And if you still don't like it, it's cool. Every genre has their niche fans, and the Hardcore element is unappealing to many.

I agree with you. I like metalcore, and the way they compose their songs and for so many bands, their lyrics are so deep, but then you find the emo bands that think a single heavy drum beat makes them part of this genre, and it fucks it all up. I love the hardcore, the deep vocals and fast drum beats, but there are so many boybands that are full of themselves and think that they can get away with genre hopping, and sometimes they do.

I like your videos, but there are a few things I want to point out:
    >"Average metalheads don't like metalcore."
That is true about a lot of metalheads, especially in the more extreme and obscure scenes, but I always saw that demographic as being strongly over-amplified by the internet. Log out of Metal-Archives and talk to anybody at a heavy metal show about this - I guarantee you that most of them would either simply listen to it or not care about it. Hell, most mainstream metal festivals feature metalcore (as well as nu-, industrial-, and other "false" metal) acts on their tickets. (See Wacken and Mayhem fest.)
    >"Metalcore is generic. There's not much you can do with it."
I did lose interest in metalcore years ago, in part due to my tastes changing, but in another part, I'll admit, due to being tired of hearing the same damn breakdown. Here's the problem with your argument, though: every scene consists of a desert of mediocrity with an oasis of talent. What you're saying can easily be applied to any metal subgenre - have you even tried keeping count of every death and black metal band that knocks off Morbid Angel and Darkthrone? With that said, there kind of is a reason why death metal lost momentum with the death of Chuck Schuldiner. On top of that, there is much more creative room and activity with metalcore than there is with thrash metal - once you've heard the big four of thrash, you've heard almost all of it worth hearing. Hell, even Slayer has become a knockoff of itself while Megadeth has released a lot of non-Thrash and Metallica moved away from thrash over 20 years ago.
    >"Metalcore lyrics and art aren't well-done."
It seems you haven't read a lot of metalcore lyrics or seen any metalcore album art. Also, my last point applies here: once you've read a handful of black and death metal songs dealing with Satanism, necrophilia, and murder, you've pretty much read at least a good 75% of it.
    >"Not enough guitar solos."
A guitar solo doesn't automatically make a song good, and the lack thereof doesn't make it bad. Some songs sound interesting without them, while others seem to desperately throw them in as salvation from monotony. And again. Have you heard most black metal? Do you even Gorgoroth?

This whole video (and most of these comments) is coming from people who only know of metal, and not much about hardcore or metalcore. Have you guys ever heard of Converge? Or any GOOD metalcore band? Wtf is Butcher Babies? Look at the lyrics of bands like Parkway Drive for instance.. Go see August Burns Red, or Norma Jean etc. and tell me that those bands don't put their heart into their music and have a ton of talent. Saying that metalcore as a whole doesn't have talent or passion seriously does not make sense.

    • @ryucain
      @ryucain 8 років тому +9

Also, this is coming from someone who absolutely loves metal and hardcore. There isn't much of that that I don't like. I've grown up listening to bands like Agathodaimon, Mercenary, Dark Tranquility, Wolves in the Throne Room, Scar Symmetry, Burzum, etc. But also, Bleeding Through, Terror, Magrudergrind, Ringworm, etc. and then I also liked bands like A Day to Remember, Broadway, and whatever else. So pretty much all my life people have hated things that i like, and loved things that i love. Haven't met someone who hated everything i liked or liked everything i like. Not sure why. Lol. It's all just different tastes. Some people have a wider array than others. I noticed that "metalheads" tend to be the ones with narrow preferences.. And then they say stuff like "but i like some EDM" or "but i listen to classical too!" Lol

    • @XRyukhan
      @XRyukhan 7 років тому +5

I'd argue that there are quite a few more overrated metal bands considering it is a way more popular genre. Some of the most overrated acts of all time are metal. The only people who like the "popular" metalcore (aka shit like of mice and men etc.) are young kids who like going to warped tour and shit. I love The Fall of Ideals album from All That Remains, but that is really intro-level metalcore. That is like, guitar hero music. Obviously you need to dig a little bit to find the really good stuff, but of course you kind of need to be into hardcore even just a little in order for you to really enjoy that type of music. Instead of saying there "there are good metalcore bands," you probably mean to say "there are some metalcore bands I like." And they just happen to be the more popular metalcore bands which only verge on the edge of the genre.. bands like All That Remains and As I Lay Dying tend to appeal to fans of metal. But when the genre first emerged, it had a lot of crossover with hardcore. You really do need to like both types of music to get into it. Otherwise I'd say it is a pointless discussion. I'd be like me holding a conversation about classic metal like metallica and iron maiden and all that. I do not like that music, and I don't listen to that music. So I'm not gonna sit here and call it overrated and bad. It just isn't my kind of music so I leave it alone.

I got into metalcore hatd about two hree years ago. I loved bands like as i lay dying and parkway drive . Downloaded the whole discographies. Then when i started to watch reaction videos of people explain about phase changes, tempo changes , hard parts to make musically , hard choruses to make, hard chorus music and everything about the differences of metal fron other types of music. Then i started noticing these facts in songs . When i listened to bands like parkway drive and as i lay dying etc i started seeing the similarities in every song. These songs were literally the same thing for me with a different riff . The intros the drum fills in their songs were similar . They kinda used the same structure. And i got hella bored . And the vocals started get annoying and it sounded very popy and easy done. But then i listened to avenged sevenfold. Its weird i know . Then i got super interested because they actually worked super hard to cahnge their songs and albums. I was suprised how their albums were all different from each other and each song. They wrote lyrics to sing on thrashy riffs and they did much harder music than other bands . But anyways they get shit a lot but if you want to metal core stuff checkout their first two albums and trivium and killswitch engage . Other metalcore bands started becoming a trend and i always felt like it waa going the way that pop music is. Everyone does the same kinda thing and in everything and when someone does a trick everybody else also does it ad when it is over used they stop it and so the wheel turns.

I had a metalcore phase and always hated this gatekeeping and people saying it‘s not metal. But my view has changed. I don‘t want to say metalcore is bad music, if you enjoy it, it‘s fine! But metal was supposed to be subcultural, always exploring and widening the boundaries of what is considered music or how it is supposed to sound. Metalcore takes some elements (heavy guitar, screaming etc, you might say the CORE), but mixes it with melodies that could be taken out of any charts song. It makes the music way more accessible, but takes away the spirit of it: the music doesn‘t try to be different, it tries to fit in.
This leads to a completely different feeling at concerts, especially at festivals. Metalcore bands headline many big festivals, because so many people want to see them and are ready to pay a lot of money for it. The crowd at big metal festivals almost feels like any rock or pop show. You might call me an elitist for saying that‘s a bad thing, I would have done so several years ago. Metalcore helped me to get used to harsh vocals and was a part of my musical journey. Without it, I would have never listened to Death or Black Metal.
However I personally don’t like the influence it has on the metal scene.. And I know nobody gives a fuck about what I think, but I wish there was more of a separation between metal and metalcore events

My answer to the question "Is metalcore metal or not" is always "it depends on the band".
It really just depends on whether they're more metal, or more core.
    METALcore bands:
    -A7X
-BFMV early work (Hand Of Blood EP, The Poison, Scream Aim Fire, partially Fever)
    -Killswitch Engage
    -As I Lay Dying
    -Trivium
    metalCORE bands:
    -Black Veil Brides
    -Motionless In White
    -Asking Alexandria
    -Falling In Reverse
METALcore bands have a lot more metal elements, such as frequent guitar solos and beautiful melodies, and more metal structures, more emphasis on just raw instruments rather than overusing synth and electronic effects, and I think this genre of music is amazing. metalCORE however is where you start to lose me, it is essentially pop but with a punk sound. No guitar solos, no metal elements, just constant screaming and breakdowns, some of it can be good but it's mostly garbage imo.

  • @WButterTBWButter
    @WButterTBWButter 6 років тому +19

Most metalheads don't like it because their definition of it is messed up. Something like Bullet For My Valentine and Asking Alexandria isn't 'real' Metalcore, its sold that way. Metalcore is, as the name suggests a combination of various Metal genres mixed with Hardcore Punk. Most of the so called 'Metalcore' bands nowadays are just chugga chugga breakdowns with autotuned poppy clean vocals. That's not what I define as Metalcore and I don't listen to this stuff myself, with a few exclusions.
The Metalcore I am talking about is bands like Integrity, Ringworm, Converge, Arkangel, Earth Crisis, All Out War and so on. I am pretty sure if you em some of these bands, mnay people who are into 'real' Metal would like them! Thats certainly how I got into those bands, because they combine some of my favourite bands like Obituary or Slayer with the speed and energy of Hardcore!

I'm really late to this video and discussion, but would like to present my opinion anyways. What I typically want from metal is lyrics that make me think, a story, perhaps, or a convincing display of differing philosophies/religious/political views, AND with music that matches those tones and emotions. Metalcore just doesn't give me that. Not saying there isn't any out there, but the bands that I have been presented with (from a cousin that is really into metalcore), just don't hit me like when I first heard bands like Savatage or Stratovarius.
But I would also like to say, there are tons of metal bands and sub-genres that I also don't like. I typically stay away form heavy vocals, as I can only hear limited emotions out of them, which tends to be rage, anger or hate, whether or not the lyrics match those emotions, and that isn't what I listen to metal for.

Whether or not you like metalcore is one thing. But to judge and generalize an entire genre of music, which honestly I don't think you know the first thing about, is ridiculous. There are a ton of metalcore bands which a lot of substance and creativity. I will agree that there are a lot of bullshit generic scene kid bullshit metalcore out there but that does not represent the genre as a whole. Converge, Zao, Unearth, The Ghost Inside, Integrity, and Shai Hulud are examples of really great metalcore bands with honestly more substance that I hear in a lot of metal bands. Read the lyrics to some Converge or Shai Hulud songs and compare that to lyrics of a typical goregrind band. I'm not saying there aren't metal bands with substance either because there certainly are. I'm just saying that in every genre of music you have good bands and you have bad bands.
I used to be kinda like you where I would write of entire genres of heavy music because it wasn't what I was currently into at the time. I started out listening to early 2000s metalcore, then I moved to death metal, black metal and grindcore. Then I was like "fuck hardcore, fuck metalcore, fuck anything that isn't metal". Then my tastes started to shift to hardcore punk and I was like "death metal is stupid and so is metalcore." But now I've gotten older and I just don't care about any of that bullshit anymore. I can spend one day listening to a bunch of obscure black metal bands or some sludge and doom bands with 20 minute songs and then the next day just listen to a bunch of tough guy beatdown hardcore. If it's heavy and it speaks to me I like it regardless of genre.
Metalcore is so much more than what you think it is. The popular metalcore bands give the genre a bad name but there's more than just Asking Alexandria out there. And again I get that some people just don't like how metalcore sounds but you can't just write it off as shallow and generic or based on one band.

Oh come on, BMTH, Asking Alexandria and Motionless in White are what people think of when someone says "metalcore". Butcher Babies aren't metalcore if you ask me. Have you read Motionless in White lyrics? BMTH Lyrics?
I may look happy, but honestly dear,
the only way I'll really smile is if you cut me ear to ear.
I see the vultures, they watch me bleed.
They lick their lips, as all the shame spills out of me.
That's from one of BMTH's earlier and heavier albums. Metalcore has a lot of good writing, and just because you heard Butcher Babies' more commercialized songs doesn't mean that's what metalcore is. While we're at the subject, let's revisit some of their lyrics. This is from the song "Grim Sleeper", which is about the serial killer of the same name.
I know death is lurking, I feel it near
Through the screams I can taste the fear
Calling out no one knows I'm here
    I'm nameless faceless victim
Now, for the "trying to be edgy" part, let's see some of the Slayer lyrics
I am the new hell on earth
    The lord of agony divine
    Domination, intimidation
    Lives within these eyes
The etire song is riddled with attempts to sound edgy. Not only that song at that, no sir. most of the songs are like this. "I am the hell on Earth", seriously? Can't get more tryhard edgy wannabe from there.
Another thing is, so what if there's no solos? I myself dislike solos greatly. Why? Complicated does not equal good. And they just plain out don't fit my taste. When I was little, my father would play old school metal in the car, and I'd cringe so hard when the solos started. Most of the time it feels like the guitarist just pauses the song to demonstrate what a showoff he is, and then it resumes, when what happened has no connection to the song whatsoever.
Let's talk about "real metal" having more diversity, shall we? Oh wait, all the vocals are the same. Same vibrato, same falsetto. I swear, when I hear music from the 70's and 80's, I cannot for the life of me tell if it's the same person or a different one singing nearly all the songs.
You know why I don't really like metalcore artists? They look like emo faggots until they are no longer teenagers. You know why I like their music? It sounds good to me. Hits the right spot, at least half of the artists. It's constantly changing and evolving, while what you call "real metal" just recycles the same things over and over. Check out the band for which I have an utmost respect, In Hearts Wake. Their texts have made me straight up cry, and their music is beyond amazing. Then, if you still claim metalcore is "ruining the scene", you're straight up beyond biased.
You wanna know why I dislike metalheads? Most of you let that define you, and you create a stereotype that leaks onto other people who just like similar but in no way the same music. I used to listen to Otep all the time and dress in black, and people who didn't know shit would call me a metalhead. I hated that. It used to happen *all* the time in my hometown. You boast about how your music is the only one with substance, while all the rest has inferior lyrics, meaning, and sound. You said it yourself - after hearing parts of the lyrics and a few songs of one band that isn't even like the most widespread goddamn metalcore, you make a video in which you say you feel like it's ruining the scene. And no, saying "it's just my opinion" doesn't make it less condescending. You all act like the music you like is the best music to ever come out of this world. If I had a penny every time a metalhead said another genre sucked, I'd be able to buy the eiffel tower, the entire yearly stock of turnips for Europe, and all of Nasa's satelites.

Metalcore killed off Nu-Metal back in early 2004. Metalcore did away with the whole Rap/Hip-hop influence that was around at the time with Nu-Metal. If you remember the entire Ozzfest 2004 lineup? That changed the direction of metal and brought back better guitar playing and soloing to metal that was missing for a long time. Grunge, Nu-Metal and alternative was buried by Metalcore...Love Metalcore or hate it. You can't deny that Metalcore changed the way metal was back in the day.

"when ever I see metalcore bands they all look and sound the same to me" and then you compare them to two different genres trash and death metal which are sub-genres not bands and talk how they have evolved, you don't really make sense. Look at most black metal bands and listen to them and you will realize that they sound very similar, that's because they want to have the characteristics of said sub-genre thus sounding very similar. SOME of these things you bring up make even LESS sense than the "it's not metal" thing.
I've also been listening to all types of metal but mostly metalcore since like 2007, where bands like As I lay dying, Parkway drive, Killswitch engage, the ghost inside and unearth were the shit.

Melodic instrumentation, distorted and pinch harmonic with heavy chugging.

I choose metalcore because it is much better more uplifting but still edgy music. Metalcore conveys emotion very well
Death metal is void of any emotion it is truly noise and what people who have never listened to metal think metal music is sorry not sorry,
I will admit there. Is a lot of metalcore bands that sound alike but i feel that has more to do with influence and capitalization of a style. Rather with death metal it all sounds the same because the genre just has nothing to offer for anyone that is not already heavily invested in the sound

I love metalcore and I never heard of Butcher Babies. Let's not generalize all metalcore by listening to only one . . . . unless of course you would like me to generalize all of metal on only one terrible metal band.
Substance; the quality of being important, valid, or significant.
"Don’t step out of line kid, you learn it pretty fast
Every face has its place in the crowd
They’ll give you all the answers, so you don’t ask any questions
Then they’ll march you with a smile into the ground" - Parkway Drive
    "One life
    One decision
Make sure it ends with you still living." - Beartooth
**Also listen to their song Sick and Disgusting, Caleb Shomo spills his heart out and the song ends with him sobbing.
    "This world is spiraling down
    The segregation of everything
Is the source of the blood on the walls
    It's passed down by generation
This hatred could swallow us all
Can we unlearn what's been ingrained?" -Ice Nine Kills
    "Just hear me out
    I know you're down
When hope looks lost, there's no one to be found
But I won't give up on you.
You gotta dig deep, and bury all the thoughts.
The thoughts that tell you, you're not good enough.
The critics, the cynics, say you'll never make it.
Prove em' all wrong, they are mistaken.
Though you may walk alone, you're worth more than you know." - I Prevail
"I suppose, I suppose if we all try harder
To start relating, maybe we'd stop the hating
I propose, I propose that we all try harder
To spread some joy and laughter, in this world of disaster." -Dead Rabbitts
Some lyrics of a few metalcore bands that "don't have any substance." I could add more but I don't want this comment to go on forever.
I suppose the definition of substance is the quality of importance, validity, and significance and that could be judged by opinion. Perhaps criticizing the government or society, singing about your passion, singing about your struggles, singing to inspire and uplift the audience isn't of any value or importance.
    Then what is?
I have tried argued with many metalheads about metalcore. The truth of the matter is not in the lyrics, it's the heaviness and distortion levels of the music itself. To many metalheads that choose to dis metalcore, it's because they are metal elitists that hate everything that isn't "brutal" and doesn't have a lot of distortion. For those that choose to like more than just "brutal" or choose to not go as "brutal" as humanly possible, they are not trve kvlt or true metalheads. Often times if you try to express why you think other, less metal genres have value the answer you will receive from them is often around the lines of: "Shut the fuck up bitch. That music is shit. You fucking suck, you fucking cunt." Vulgar obscenities is NOT how an argument/debate works, (to those that do this) please go retake your high school English class. This clearly shows that most are not open to understand other genres or refuse to admit they were utterly wrong over their display of venom towards lyrics they hadn't heard prior. Basically there is not logic in any of it.
If you want to know if metalcore is worth anything or has value, dig around. Get off your lazy ass and do some research. Submerge yourself in it, find out what it means to listen to metalcore. Society likes to label metal as violent and grotesque. I got off my lazy ass and I plunged into metal, I did my research. No, not all metal bands are this way. If I can do it, so can the rest of you. If you don't want to, then you have no right to complain about a genre you know nothing about.
****I also don't generalize and I know not all metalheads feel this way. Some are open and some even like metalcore; some don't because the music doesn't speak to them but choose not to hate on it and put those that enjoy it to as much shame as they can muster. To those of you Metalheads that are respectable, thank you!

Just gonna put my little opinion in here.
First off, I appreciate your opinion and everything you say makes sense and I can completely understand.
Now I'm a huge metalcore fan. That's the main "metal" I listen to. Some bands sound more "metal," some sound more "hardcore," and then there are some who are in between.
I had to go look up who Butcher Babies were. Never heard of them. I wanted to listen to a few songs before I could jot down my opinion. They're not the worst example, but they're not the best in my opinion. I appreciate what they have to offer. It's a different image to me. From what I'm seen, I haven't seen a lot of female metal vocalist like that. But I feel there could be better examples of metalcore or at least look up more bands before judging from just one. You feel me?
There are bands like All That Remains, August Burns Red, As I Lay Dying, Bullet For My Valentine, Killswitch Engage, and Miss May I who more or less play metalcore who I feel would be better.

Although i'm late to this video but I totally disagree with you on most points. In my 25years of my life I've listened to many metal bands. I don't consider myself "metalhead" because I listen to almost every genre. Now to the point, I've met many people who listens to metal and none said they hate metalcore. We all listen to anything from cradle of filth, slayer, children of bodom, carcass, iron maiden, dream theater, anthrax, exodus, behemoth, venom and so on to underoath, bring me the horizon, killswitch engage, northlane, as I lay dying, Abr, architects, novelist fr etc. We never had a problem. I personally can't listen to thrash or heavy metal all the time so I switch it up to metalcore or prog metal or even to soft pop punk, indie and country music. You talk about lyrics, metalcore has much as good songwriting as any other metal. Not every song is about crying over a breakup. Many metalcore has good lyrics of real life issues and about the real world. Many people say lack of solos in metalcore if I want to listen to some solos I'll go listen to inspiring instrumental bands like intervals, animals as leaders, chon, mogwai, polyphia etc. Stop judging music and the reason I got triggered is not because I like metalcore it is because how people generalize a genre/sub genre without giving it a listen. Even there's good pop hip hop music as well that doesn't mean you'll judge the entire genre by listening to some. If its not for you leave it but respect the artists and musician. Metal is not the only genre I listen to i love hip hop, pop(kpop and jpop included), jazz, rock and everything. So don't use "we" in your title because there are many people in the world who are actually open about every music and listen to every kind of music without shitting on them. But I remember the last time I was going through some tough time it was bands like we came as romans, linkin park, dream theater and nothing nowhere got me out of it. Music is powerful and it doesnt matter genre/sub genre it is.

So many of these comments are overlooking the beginning of metalcore, which was a movement comprised of uncompromisingly heavy, bizarre bands mashing hardcore and metal pretty seamlessly. Metalcore is an incredibly broad genre tag, that unfortunately lumps bands like Converge, Harm's Way, Code Orange, etc. with bands like Unearth, Chimaira, Trivium, etc. Those two groups have such fundamentally different sounds, depending on WHERE their punk and metal blend comes from. If I grew up listening to Gorilla Biscuits and Bolt Thrower, my band is going to sound drastically different than if my influences are Pantera and Fugazi, with bits of Nu Metal thrown in. To lump all of that expansive genre-building together and call 100% of it bland based on your experience one band's live performance is incredibly small-minded.

You cant say metalcore is generic if you haven't listened to the dillinger escape plan. They are very technical and the lyrics are very meaningful and they also expeirement a lot. Converge is also a good example and Killswitch engage is the most average metalcore band yet they sum up the genre the best. Butcher babies is horrible and so are metalcore bands like attila. Its not technical and lyrics are nothing but edgy bullshit with no substance. Those bands do not represent this genre as a whole. The emo shit and post hardcore shit is terrible but if you were going to look through these shit bands, you will find that you are wrong. There are a ton of good metalcore bands that are good, its just you havent looked hard enough. That is pretty ignorant of an opinion coming from a metalhead who is usually more understanding than the average person. Your expeirience with butcher babies should not sum up your opinion of metalcore. There are a ton of bands in any sub genre of metal that give it a bad name.

who the fuck told u that Dillinger Escape Plan is just metalcore?those guys are mathcore!you cant defend the metalcore genre by naming a band that does a subgenre of that genre, thats like defending black metal using Cradle Of Filth as an example!
but Id recommend As I Lay Dying too, even though they are labeled as "melodic metalcore" which is kinda a subgenre of metalcore,it is close enough to actual metalcore music...but still you have to admit, the genre has more weak bands than actual good ones (especially compared to other genres of metal)

Cradle of Filth sucks live. But let's get to the point: Why don't "we" like metalcore? The fans. The music is VERY metal. Heaven Shall Burn fucking crushes. That's just one example of many but that serves my point. When you say there is no substance I have to laugh as you point out Cradle of Filth as a great live show. CoF has some of the most fucking laughable lyrics I've ever heard. I am personally a fan of Grindcore, some of it has a lot of substance but there is a lot of shit for lyrics that aren't even worthy of an ICP song.
And let me say this once and for all. Black metal dumbs metal down. 98% of it has shit production and is basically trash can guitars, inaudible guitars with some dude going "SCREEEEEEEEEEEEE" into a microphone that sound like it came from a Teddy Ruxpin someone found at a thrift store back in 1992.

There are a few notable metalcore bands out there, like Killswitch Engage, (old) All that Remains, As I Lay Dying (when they where still a thing), and Parkway Drive. I think Metalcore gets a negative connotation because of bands like Asking Alexandria, Of Mice and Men, Sleeping with Sirens etc. Bands that, like you said, lack substance. Metalcore has become repetitive and boring. Modern metalcore is like "Oh let's scream here, sing here, breakdown here..." It's just become a thing to appeal to a large crowd and get money. If you want to give metalcore a chance, listen to these albums by these bands.
All that Remains-The Fall of Ideals
    Parkway Drive-Horizons
    Killswitch Engage-Alive or Just Breathing
As I Lay Dying-Shadows are Security
These metalcore bands get people to listen to heavier shit eventually.
I used to listen to Five Finger Death Punch and Avenged Sevenfold, which got me listening to Killswitch Engage and Eventually bands like Behemoth, Immortal, Nile etc...

Metalcore is flat. There is nothing interesting about it. Once one gets over the idea of "break downs" It comes across as a kind of metal made for people who are just getting into metal or think that's what all metal is. It's a cheese burger happy meal. I'd put Slip Knot and Lamb of God in the same camp. Actually Meshuggah too. Real bore fests. But to keep in mind, these bands are also gate way bands.
