Alternative Metal is a a subgenre of Metal that is influenced by Alternative Rock so that means any Metal band with a Alt Rock leaning is Alt Metal, you listed a few subgenres of Alt Rock particularly Grunge, and Post-Grunge which could have just simply put in with Alt Metal because bands that fuse alt rock and its subgenres with Metal and also Nu Metal, Rap Metal, and Funk Metal are subgenres of Alt Metal

I think brutal death metal's appeal is the fact that its sheer brutality is able to effectively convey those feelings of pure rage and hatred. I love Suffocation, Cryptopsy, and Mortician because they convey those feelings so well. Still, I understand why it's not more highly rated. I also think post-metal deserves a higher rating. Bands like Isis, Jesu, Alcest, and Rosetta show just how much you can do with that genre.
Still, I respect your opinions and I think that overall this list is fantastic. You've definitely got one of the best metal channels out there.

I would say that the most glaring omission here is USPM/US Power Metal.
I watched your "Heavy Metal" video too and feel like restricting that term to the NWOBHM movement misses out on a lot of music that developed since - especially in the US.

I think a new genre that has emerged from the last couple of decades that has stayed trve but innovative that goes unnoticed is what ive heard to be called voidgaze. This is the sound of dissonant, unsettling, atmospheric, extreme metal with emphasis on timbre and texture to create darkness, chaos, and wonder. Bands like Portal, Deathspell Omega, Gorguts, Ulcerate. I think these bands being lumped into "experimental" or "avant garde" is a disservice to the distinct sound they create. I think it deserves its own genre. There are plenty of bands now who delve into this particular sound to qualify it.

    • @PorscheJon
      @PorscheJon 2 місяці тому

I know its probably just semantics, but the label "dissonant death metal" doesn't quite fit imo. Deathspell omega is far enough removed from death metal. And dissonance is found in lots of metal genres. The genre I'm talking about is defined by a mix of black and death with a particular unique approach of disharmony to create atmosphere. I guess I'm just not a fan of the label "dissonant death". Its more than that.

    • @StanTorrent
      @StanTorrent 2 місяці тому

@@PorscheJonThough the thing is, dissonant death metal has a lot of overlap with black metal, and many of the dissonant death metal bands have black metal influence. So naturally, the combination of the genres is natural

Good video like always. You need to get into jazz metal. It's more than just prog or thecnical jazz influenced bands. From fusion to modern death metal, to avant guard to death and roll, black to djent. Also the other way, jazz influenced by metal. You like proggy theory heavy and melodic stuff, you'll love jazz metal.

I'm a little confused by your comment about Epic Doom Metal. I'm not debating its' placement but rather your statement that it is your favorite doom metal genre when you ranked Sludge another doom metal subgenre higher. I am a fan of both, but Funeral Doom is my favorite metal genre alongside a general love of all things Black. How about a Blackened tier list in the future.

I do love your videos. Your channel is not just "something new", its a breath of fresh air. Keep going on.
And, as a human being, I have my own opinion, including on genres.
    - Sludge Metal. Maybe not totally my theme. It's good, but not so much. A- for me.
    - Metal'n'Roll. Didn't hear really good stuff except Metallica. B+.
    - D(S)BM. Too niche, and personally I do prefer Atmosperic/Post-Black (like White Ward). Around B-tier, too much noise (genre leans more to Raw Black) and could be repetative.
    - Epic Doom. Yeah, it's cool and with that - too niche.
    - Gothic Metal. For me it's a bit boring, but I can understand why you put it there.
    - Tech Death. Overcomplicated, but could be interesting. B+
    - Mathcore. Too much chaos for A-tier, IMO. Solid B.
    - Atmospheric Black. A-tier, so many gems in this genre, and it's not just Filosofem-like rip-offs.
    - Blackgaze. I do like this genre a lot, but can understand why it's only B-tier to you.
    - Hyperpop. Maybe not my theme, like "a lot", but could be interesting... sometimes, rarely. C- at most.
    - Incelcore. Totally not mine. D.
    - Hardcore/Metallic Hardcore?/Metalcore. Aside from genre naming. There could be more hidden gems, but you have to look for them, and sometimes it's just one album from whole band's discography (Yes, Employed To Serve - Eternal Forward Motion and Great American Ghost - Everyone Leaves, I'm talking about you; blend of Chaotic/Punk-ish sound made the job well done).
    - Beatdown Hardcore. IMO, you're too harsh on it. C-, pretty good at live performance.
    Great video!

I feel like grindcore gets such a bad reputation because of the short song gag. It's such a unique genre that imo can produce some of the best sounds in metal.
Take any album,ep,split etc. from plutocracy for example or even the more metal leaning bands like insect warfare or nasum. The music that homies like this put together is definitely more than just "lol short song"

Personally, doom metal is 100% S Tier. It is a varied genre, most artists make good music, and it is a perfect gateway genre. It can combine with like every other genre perfectly. I agree with your epic doom placement.
Stoner metal, another one of my favorites, deserves A Tier simply because it’s not as varied and is very repetitive, but can be a good gateway and has good variation with awesome bands and songs. Note that yeah Im kind of combining Stoner doom and Stoner rock for this.
Personally I also believe Southern Metal deserves A Tier because… idk… I really love Corrosion of Conformity.
Also personally Grunge is not a genre, more of just a movement.

Excellent video, I totally agree with your take on crossover thrash. Many people love it, and that's okay, but crossover fans also expect regular thrash listeners to like crossover, and it's annoying, it's repetitive and boring. I also take it that you're not a big fan of punk/hardcore, and neither am I. The rankings I disagree with the most are regular black metal and avant-garde metal. The former is a classic, and while monotonous at times, it's pretty consistent and versatile, I think it deserved A tier. On the other hand, avant-garde metal is trickier because it can be either superb and refreshing or horrible and pretentious depending on the artist, good examples of excellent avant-garde are Arcturus and Thy Catafalque, I get it's not for most people, but a C tier would've been fairer. Anyway, I really enjoyed the ranking and your opinions about each genre.

I would say the key in difference between our taste is I'm more instrument focused and love super long songs. Yeah, Funeral Doom. Next, I will defend the undefendable. I actually love Drone metal. Let me explain before everyone questions my sanity. It is good background for when I am reading with a low distraction nature. More importantly, it puts me to sleep and not in a bad way. When insomnia hits hard, the best thing I can do is turn on a long Drone Metal album. It beats any rain, wind, crickets or other natural ambient. If the fan is not enough, the drone metal comes to the rescue.

Ah, genres are fun. I tend to view bands individually before I judge them off of what genre they appear to be. Given how much preference correlates with enjoyment, I tend to write bands off more as 'eh, not for me' rather than bad... unless they are really objectively bad 🤣 But ultimately, since my tastes drift over time, experiencing new music through genres you enjoy is a cool way to do it.
Metal-n-roll was my intro to metal. Specifically Metallica (Reload - what a way to start...oof!). From there I listened to thrash (earlier metallica), and alt / nu metal / industrial / grunge since it was all over the radio / MTV back then. In those days I'd peruse Tower Records and just buy cds with my summer job money off of album art. It was a really random way to experience metal genres. I'd end up with Type O, Six Feet Under, Cradle of Filth and Foo Fighters in the same purchasing spree. I had a friend in high school who would lend me Iron Maiden cds and that got me into heavy metal and NWOBHM (and maybe a smidge of glam). At one point I bought JP painkiller on a whim...and that got me instantly hooked. One helluva cd. NWOBHM got me into both power metal (Blind Guardian and Angra) and melodeath (In Flames...Jester Race and Amorphis). I also started branching out more and some of the cross over genres were very intriguing like death-doom (paradise lost). From there it was prog, folk and symphonic metal (symphonic death is sweet). More recently a bout of djent / instrumental prog and my most recent guilty binge... tech death. I especially love the melodic or proggy stuff 😁
It feels weird skipping major genres along the way (groove, sludge, black, old-school death, etc), but I know I'll get sucked into those one way or another through a crossover style (melodic black, etc).
Despite really loving power metal (also...probably my wife's favorite metal genre), I agree with how you would rank it off of sampling random songs from the genre. As someone who's listened to it for ~25 years now, I feel like there's a couple different flavors. Early european style power metal bands (blind guardian, stratovarius, helloween/gamma ray, etc), some american style stuff like Manowar that seems to have come out of speed metal (?), and then a later wave of euro style that puts a lot of emphasis on technical guitar work (perhaps at the expense of songwriting). I'd say that last stuff came straight out of broad audiences getting spoon fed it through guitar hero (ugh, it's pretty bad!). There's probably a bit of a resurgence of more classic power metal mixed with more modern styles, but it can be hit or miss. Some of it can be really good like recent albums from Unleash the Archers (apex / abyss). But, sometimes just adding cheesy orchestral stuff over bland power metal makes it more gag inducing 😂

I generally agree with most of this video, however, I have two main qualms:
    1. You should know Between the Buried and Me is not deathcore. It is predominantly prog metal with metalcore, melodic metalcore, and melodeath influences, they also had some hardcore punk influence too in the very early days. But they have never really dabbled in deathcore from my understanding of the genre.
    2. As a prog fan, how can you hate avant-garde metal so much? When I think of good avant-garde metal, I think of Imperial Triumphant, Devin Townsend, Diablo Swing Orchestra, Maudlin of the Well, and Unexpect. Do you not like these bands?
