  • Here at Larry's Orchids we like to stress using bark, we find it is far
superior to growing in sphagnum, it also is more sustainable since
    sphagnum is not very eco-friendly.

I am changing all my Phals from Sphag to Orchiada bark. But I worry about them suffering from the shock of such a great change. So I am wrapping their roots in fresh, rain water soaked, New Zealand Sphag then placing them in the bark I've surrounded around the moss wrapped roots. I was wondering if you could share any experiences you've had with switching Orchids from moss to bark. How did they handle the change? Most orchids come potted in Sphag already. The switch to bark is probably stressful for them.

If worried for them to get shocked, you could always speak to them few days beforeghand, telling them what you're going to so with them.. Or just think it,and thbhink kind thoughts. They don't get scared when they feel your positive atmospheres, radiation.Especially if you direct some good thoughts towards them.

I don't understand why you recommend this? superior growth has been shown when phals are grown in sphag or so I've read in AOS etc and in the big MSU fert study. My understanding also is that all taiwan growers etc grow in sphag. Care to enlighten me? I'm no expert and have killed several phals lol, so what do I know. My latest rehab repot I did in a combo of sphag with about 25% bark and perlite to keep it from compacting, I do think that just sphag is very difficult unless maybe a seedling etc

I used to be against moss myself, but I am slowly starting to realize that in zone 7 it is almost necessary if you are using new bark. New tree bark doesn’t hold a lot of moisture, so by the time I come home from work, The roots on all my phals would be completely dry. So between daily misting and an insane watering/soaking routine, stressing about leaving my house and killing my orchids, I noticed that some of the leaves were beginning to wrinkle and show signs of dehydration. So I said... I’m done, went out and got some sphag. moss. It’s time to throw in a towel when you realize that something you really enjoy is turning into a headache, not a hobby.

How has it gone? Don't worry, both the S moss and the bark is used, seem to be a matter of view and opinion. Listen again: The moss keeps moister , if you find it hard to care regularloy, and use tha bark if youmanage ti+o care for it every day
