Great video. My one Phalaenopsis that was a rescue when potted in Repotme Imperial orchid mix over the years would keep getting set back for various reasons. She is small even for a mini Phalaenopsis and her leaves always looked limp. I repotted in 5A Sphagnum moss only and she is doing great. Maybe she can bloom this fall. Thanks for this video to affirm I am watering correctly. I love all your videos.
I love this! I’m not experienced enough to use this method but I still like to learn. You’re the reason all my rescue phalaenopsis are all recovering. You gave me the confidence to purchase a super floppy mini phal with damaged roots wrapped in crispy moss (she didn’t even have a pot). I thank you and my orchids thank you too!
Uh, better check the moss brand and if the room gets proper fresh air daily! Also dead bits on your orchids. White and grey mold attaches to breaking down stuff, even dead roots or dried sheaths.
Your tutorial is excellent and thorough and careful; thanks. These are the factors I need to master next, as I've moved from the familiar comfort of Phal and Potinara to a new group, Oncidium. I recently bought a beautiful plant with spike, potted in sphagnum moss only, but it goes for weeks without watering and still feels moist; I think the grower compressed the sphagnum a lot more than you do, as it does not yield much to finger pressure. I'll have to study your video "How to dry pots" since I cannot repot until she blooms. Thanks for your rich encyclopedia of learning resources!!
Hi, yes sellers usually compress the moss a lot to stabilize the orchids and also the roots as they grow will compress it further. I would consider repotting at some point, a few weeks is a lot of time wet and the problem are the air pockets being clogged, which I suspect they are. Good luck!
Two of my monster phals have mold growing on the moss that gets shaded by the leaves. My thought was to switch to the dark imperial mix from repotme because I’m not sure how to prevent the mold from growing and spreading
I just started with orchids and only have 3 plants. All my plants have very long stems with the leaves on the bottom and the flowers way up on the top attached to a stake. How do your orchid plants have the short stem with the flowers all the way at the bottom? Do you cut back the tall stalks and they bloom later on the bottom?
So if I have a really hot and humid summer and a super cold and dry winter, is the goal to only need to water every 7 out 8 days with 5 of those days being moist and 2-3 days with dry moss?
I am new to orchid parenting. However, I have several years under my belt of raising succulents, mostly from fallen leaves. I’ve recently started using a product used to condition fish tank water called “API stress coat plus” . It was recommended by Rich over at Sheffield Plants channel. The product strips out all of the chemicals like chlorine and fluoride in my tap water. I’ve noticed a significant difference in the amount of buildup that is left on my succulents Since I started using it several months ago. I no longer have a little speckles all over my jade plants from the salts, etc that would be left when using (even filtered) tap water. I imagine it would also be helpful for the water we use to hydrate our most delicate orchids. I use it to water my own, But I’m still very new to the orchid game and can’t tell yet if it’s a detriment to use API Stress coat with the orchids or not.
Thank you so much for this video. I have much better understanding of how moss handles water now. Also, where do you get your decorative pots? Really hard to find pots without holes.
Hi Danni, can you do a tutorial on Oncidium orchid? I am starting my collection and so far feel overwhelmed. Sounds very difficult, but friends with orchid collections say otherwise, your input please. Thanks, love your videos 💕
It's probably mealbugs. Use a small piece of ginger root (about an inch) grated into a liter of water and soaked for 24 hours, to spray on the leaves. Then wipe with cotton pad and it will be OK.
Hi, beautiful video! I have a doubt: for my orchids in bark I wait for the roots to become grey so I know they need water…but in sphagnum? How do I know when to water?
I bought flowering mini phals in compressed moss. After a week, they are still super wet. What should i do? One plant's flowers were a bit greyish black, but look a bit better now. What should I do? Repot now or later? Or drill holes in the side of the posts?
You may have figured it out by now, but as soon as I get mini's I very gently remove that moss plug & repot with new sphagnum. I haven't lost blooms doing this and if roots are suffering, which the ones I got, usually we're, I feel it's better. I don't want to lose the plant over some flowers
Hellos there to you Miss Orchid Girl. I real liked Yr video here, Iv had 2 Orchids for some yes now an only just started to take good care of them. That handed flowered for the past 2 yes. But the large one is doing so this year which im happy about. An can I ask you how I would take cuttings fm the Orchids. Thank you for sharing this video here I did find this very helpful. My Orchids have just been re potted this year. An I water my Orchids with tap water an put some Garlic gloves into the water an leave for a little bit in the fridge. Then into the clubard, Then water my Orchids. But would like to ask you how I would be able to take some cuttings Fm the Orchids. Thank you for sharing this video. An you have a wonderful day today. ☀👌☀
@Thomas Abbott: In case Miss Orchid Girl is too busy to reply, may I add what little I know. To my knowledge, cuttings can’t be taken from the typical Phalaenopsis orchid like say, taking a cutting from a stem of ivy or philodendron. However, if the orchid develops a Keiki (a baby with leaves and roots), it can be cut off the “mother” orchid. Again, I’m no expert!
Hi, first off, not sure why the garlic and fridge, but stop using it. Use room temperature, plain clean water for watering and orchid intended fertilizer. Best to stay away from all these viral household 'hacks' from the internet, they're 99% of the time just garbage. Ok second, you cannot take cuttings from Phalaenopsis orchids (despite again sone viral videos), it won't be sustainable. You can try to promote keikis. Type in the search bar my name and keiki and you'll find multiple videos I made about the subject! In the end if you lose the orchids it's ok, don't feel bad, we were all there. Just take the scientific approach and you'll do great next time! Good luck! 😊
I planted my Sederia Japonica Minmaru and a Neofinotia Falcata in fluffy moss. I'm nervous as every phal I've bought from the store that was in moss has died. I have a flower spike on my N.F. 🤞🤞🤞
We moved and I put my orchids out on our new balcony which faces South East. Well, with unpacking, I didn't notice that the sun was too strong on that side and a couple of them have sunburned spot on the leaves. I quickly moved them and they are safe now. Do I cut off the sunburn leave or no? I always appreciate your videos! Thanks Dani!
I was wondering, do you ever use alive sphagnum moss? I have used this for a few years now on many different plants to grow them and I really love it. As long as it is alive there are not much issues with algae or bacteria, actually sphagnum has anti bacterial and anti fungal qualities. I am not new to orchids but I am starting again after a few years of other plants and I would now like to use my living moss with my new orchids. It does mean I can not let it dry out completely bc the moss will then die.
Thanks for the video. I understand what you're saying about watering in moss but how do you fertilise please? I've seen one of your videos where you add slow release pellets. I live in the UK where as you know you definitely have to slow down on everything in the Winter.
I have a hawkinsara that has lost most of roots when I had in my ikea cabinet(evidently it didn't like it!). I was thinking of moving it to all moss while it grows roots back, would you recommend that being a good method?
@@MissOrchidGirl my ambient air conditions are pretty dry as I live in Colorado. Many of my orchids happily live in my bathroom though! Do you ever use the water from your aquariums (from water change) to water your orchids? I’ve heard the fish water is great for outdoor plants/lawns/etc but I’m not sure how orchids would do! Thoughts?
Hi, no I don't use it as it's not suitable. I don't use RO water in my tanks so it's harder than what I prepare for my orchids. All aquarium water being great for orchids is false, it only depends on what parameters you keep your tank at. Some might be suitable, some not, chlorine is the least of your worries when it comes to orhchids if that was the issue 😊 on top of that it's also not nutritious in my case, my aquarium plants devour everything 😋
Very interesting but NOT for me at all: I grow my orchids, outside in Southwest Florida😱. I did try layering with Spagnum moss and it was root rot heaven😩
Hi, well the video hopefully explained why I advise beginners to keep it safe while me, as a very experienced grower, do things to cater to my environment rather than keeping things as fool proof as possible. It’s an older video and my memory isn’t what it used to be, but I am sure I insisted on ‘how I do’ rather than ‘you should do’ 🤭 even though it can cater to more experienced growers that are looking to save time and resources and know how to use these resources already.
@@MissOrchidGirl I see. It’s just that I repotted my poor orchards with a bunch of sick roots that I cut off and I soaked the orchards in their new muss and bark medium. But now I’m afraid that they might be too wet. Should I drain them with paper towels or let them be wet until they dry? Thank you so much for your videos!
