The rhythmic interplay between the instrumental arrangement and the vocals are truly unique and inspiring in this piece. There's this sense, in many cases, that Michael is playing the role of a horn player in the way he phrases. There is evidence of this in other pieces too, but this song really brings that 'instrument nature' of Michael's voice to the forefront.
...And you hear it in an extra enriching way when you get to isolate out the different instrumental aspects to hear how Michael's voice pulls and plays with time.
Lots more easter eggs and interesting discoveries too! Let's jump in!
I get these multitracks from a friend who has a large collection of them. Lots of you have been asking :)
Quincy had very little influence on this particular track. This is purely Michael and his B team at Hayvenhurst
As long as you keep doing Michael Jackson, I will keep coming back.
Michael once said about dancing that one becomes the bass, the drums and the strings.

You hear a lot of James Brown's influence in Michael's vocals on this track. That's definitely his aggressive gritty singing style. James Brown sang with the beat and added in all his nuances. Michael took that same approach and really took it to an untouchable level. As Michael said himself "Study the greats and become greater".
I love the Bad album. The raspy, airy, almost rap like, James Brown style delivery. the ad libs and callback’s he was experimenting so much here. Brilliant.!
That’s what we’re trying to defend for Michael Jackson’s legacy, his voice placements, his vocal arrangements, he was a real genius...
I love the Michael Jackson episodes. Keep them coming!
His voice cannot be copied. Harmonies here are epic. This is great, thank you 👍😁
One of the reasons I looooove this song is the harmonies......soooo exquisite
I didn't know this was a micheal jackson song until a couple years ago. when i was a kid my dad used to mess with me when i said "leave me alone" and he would always suign back the chorus of this song
Michael was the king of the groove. This song shows it perfectly. This song IS groove.
After Michael passed, I was sad that I would never again hear his voice for the first time on a new song. Your analysis videos allow me to hear his voice for the first time again! Thank you 🙏❤️😊
Michael was like an actor with his voice . Even when on stage . Like a play actor
This song is absolutely epic. And now I appreciate it even more, after hearing how beautiful all instrumental and vocal parts are!
The piece that starts at about
Only MJ can do that rythm to his music.
