What an undeniable talent. He felt the music and got lost within it. Even a couple pitches weren’t perfect yet it doesn’t matter. The character in each line is astounding. The energy and confidence is inspiring. Thanks for sharing this; it’s a giant reminder for me to stop trying to be perfect and just play.
I wasn't expecting him to be imitating a harmonica. He did that REALLY good. Very impressive. I've always been a MJ fan but watching these breakdowns makes me appreciate the effort towards his artistry even more.
Most people try to hide their breathing when singing, Michael just uses it as a part of the music! That way there are no dull moments, every part is musical!
The fact that this was basically a demo vocal that they decided to keep as the main voice is just🤯 This is why MJ is my favorite singer, the passion he brings to the mic is unmatched. Others may belt better or have an even bigger range or whatever but when it comes to the soul and passion of performance MJ is unmatched imo. Also, the utter lack of self-consciousness and holding back in his performances is something to strive for. I'm not a singer really (although I did take some lessons a couple of years ago) but still it's fascinating to have you break it down and show how he used his voice.
black and white is one of MJ best aged songs, it doesnt sound old at all still sounds fresh, and i dont know why exactly, everytime i hear it, it always sounds good
The thing these Jackson breakdowns have highlighted for me is how alive the vocal tracks are. All of the extra noise of him clapping etc are in there and not edited out.
Bro ur my favorite new vocal mastermind. Your excitement and spirit behind these MJ tracking is so dope!!!!!!!!! And ur voice is soundin really nice man thank you for bringin something fresh to youtube ---for vocs and music production
I’m always AMAZED and in AWE when hearing the MULTITUDE of musical and vocal nuances and “voices” in MJ’s songs!! I mean, WOW! How does a producer and singer even come up with those flourishes, scattered here and there, and everywhere, layering the music like this! ?! Spectacular!!! ❤
Teddy Riley said in an interview recently that MJ thought he‘d be upset if Remember the Time wasnt the 1st single. MJ wanted Black or White to be first but at the same wanted to credit Teddy so he told Teddy to add something to the song so MJ could credit him. So Teddy went ahead and added the cowbell you hear lol 😂
“Some details you can feel more than hear” Whenever I watch your videos about MJ’s songs, I get to listen the song differently, pating attention to the details and amazing vocal performances.
Whenever you break these songs down like this, it always reminds me just how differently producers hear their songs vs how we hear them. Whenever I produce a track, I really get hung up on minor details. But when I show it to people and mention these things to them, they say they couldn't even notice them! Because they're not listening to the track to look for flaws, they're hearing the track as a whole song. So the vision of the artist/producer can often be very different than the finished product we hear. And yet at the same time, those minor details that they DO notice, can sometimes make the whole song. Like you said, some details you can feel more than hear.
I love the fact even how MJ whole production is so precise, with all these embellishments and nuance, at the end he makes sure all of them are coherent in its pace and hit. That's why even though some people try to do covers of this, it always falls flat cause they don't get the nuance and depth right. And I'm someone who does bedroom hobby production(grew up with jazz & learnt african & middle eastern percussion diaspora) so i make tracks which i never release, and do this kind of relentless production and arrangement just to push myself with new ideas.
Yooo, that low part at 7:32 though. I always wondered, whenever I heard this song, what the hell that was. But thanks to your analysis I now know that MJ does this low part himself... jesus that guy was an allrounder for a reason 🤯🤯 Also, the part at 14:55 ... I never knew it's some sort of percussion line. I always wanted to know what he said over there, always thinking he said "go with it man" lmaoooo
These are SOOOOO goood. Every time I am in AWE. Just smiling from ear to ear through the entire video. Michael was on a whole different level, the GOAT golden standard.
Oh my goodness 😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃 Sir this is so.... Thank you for showing us the art of the greatest artist, thank you for always putting these cool 😎 Michael Jackson photos in the thumbnail. I will be back to listen to the video i am to excited right now.
The man had a good range either low or high. The mic’s proximity effect sorta helped enhance that low part at the beginning too but Michael’s range was incredible and he primarily has and is known for his high range and timbre of voice but he could have definitely done some lower stuff well I think too if he had wanted too. Good video for a good song! Always enjoy anything MJ related and these videos are top notch!
a w e s o m e! The whole arrangement is impressive.. the voice is.. I cannot describe. It is more than just voice. It feels magical! Thanks for sharing!
I love love love how much u genuinely appreciate MJ, his music, and music & singing, in general. It's inspirational, and these session tracks are such a delight, words cannot express ❤️
Apologies if this has already been said (and I haven't watched the whole video so you may have covered it already!) but the vocal on this was his first take, and he got it in one. It ended up being the one used on the record :)
Hey Chris - THANK YOU for this! i appreciate this is a vocal focused channel... would you consider doing a full length video just on the mj instrumentals... These are the bits that are the most magic for me! Just an idea 😊 Thanks again!
Thanks for all these MJ breakdowns. This song in particular has so many elements I never even knew are there, both on the vocal and the instrumental side. Its such a joy having the opportunity to listen TO Michaels songs in this way because it truly lets you appreciate what a musical genius he was. Keep up the great work Chris!
Chris.... simply, Thank you! I love the way you analyze MJ songs, these tracks are gold and you highlight the soul, energy, talent and magic Michael left us! keep it coming!
11:53 I always wondered why on this line the harmonies were louder than the lead and you couldn’t hear the lead vocal. That’s because his voice cracked! And they kept the take because ITS MJ🙌🏽🔥😮💨😂 this was a demo vocal they decided to keep
This is amazing to hear! Full song is so good and to then see the "build" of the song is just so awesome! My favourite song from the Dangerous album is Give In To Me because it has the "soft voice" but also his raspy and powerful voice and from what I get is alot of emotion in the singing. The notes and approaches he takes in the song is just so powerful and nice! Thanks for these videos man, I love to hear the songs being split up and being able to hear everything in it that you don't notice in the full song.
The Staple Singers (I believe Mavis was her name) was influential for Micheal. A lot of 70s artists were because that's when he started professionally. When Micheal does the Shamone, alright, yea yea at 18:18 that's from the Staple Singers. He does it in Bad and few other songs too. He really is brilliant in how he uses what he knows and expands & makes it his own.
Dangerous will always be my favourite MJ’s album then BAD Black or white such an amazing song its so crazy Love your channel and content you are amazing. Love all your MJ videos
This is one of my favorite MJ songs. I love hearing the low mixed and somewhat hidden gems. Funny enough, I find the drums, bass and direct clean electric guitar tones just awful on their own (stock, cookie cutter, bland) but bring everything together and man, what a jammin' tune! The writing, arranging and by far MJ's vocals make this song. My respect for Michael's talent / singing has only grown with hearing this. I can't think of too many other vocal performances that move me like this. Amazing stuff!! Thank you, Chris!!
My biggest takeaway after watching pretty much all your MJ multitrack breakdowns Chris, is that the Dangerous album was probably his most impressive creative endeavour. Makes it very clear just how underrated this period of his career was.
7:32 I always wondered what that sound was 😀 It is the one and only Michael Jackson! But, hearing you making MJs sounds makes it pretty awkward! But, man! The fact that you do his tracks is great! You are in fact honest in the way you doing this on the greatest of all time! OMG all that he does by himself (with his voice or clapping) is such a devotion to his work, fantastic! Sometimes the flawed closed captioning is the best part... "Americorps is sapping tonight", "It don't matter if you're black or fried" ... just pure gold.
This is incredible!! I was thinking only today after listening to Black or White how I wish you were able to do a multitrack breakdown of it. And here you are BOOM! Amazing😭🤩
Wow! That was incredible chris! Really enjoyed that I’m a huge fan of Michael’s voice he’s outrageous the way he uses every part of him in the song! So good
Hello Chris, my name is Daniel Ortega from Chile. I love to hear how you analyze Michael's songs, obviously I'm a fan of MJ since his album Thiller. I am excited to hear MJ's voice and his spectacular backing vocals. Espora this I would love it if you made a video with the song "Keep the faith" from the album Dangerous, so I can listen to his spectacular chorus !!!. I hope it is possible and thanks for analyzing the great creations of the incomparable MJ the king of pop. Greetings from Chile
I used to listen A LOT to Michael Jackson. Right after this vid I went to look for the last Michael interviews where he used to talk with a deeper voice to maybe preserve his singing. That "vuuuooh" is covered by the lion roar, but you can hear a very tiny bit of it. I have to admit that my grandma, my mother and my father used to make me listen to lots of different artists, different voices and ways of singing and playing, and when he passed away, I remember that the Italian broadcasting made a special program on a Friday night where they talked about his life, and the promo had Bad and Black or White. These two songs remind me that 2009 evenings where the commercial brake had that program promo and they feel very important to me because years and years after, when I started to improve my English, I understood the lyrics and they're closer than before. Beside this little part, the build up of this song makes me feel like I'm going to fight the kid bully that used to make fun of me. But I have to say that this kind of analysis by Chris, is something that makes you think about how an artist is great using his voice and putting the music to the service of the singing
People need to realise... MJ Wrote this song, and almost all his songs... In his head! The bass, then guitar etc! He Thinks of it! Like many other songs! ! He was Unique! And an all around person! Wrote the Guitar etc! A walking rhythm! It's easy to look back and hear or look into it! I don't idolise any artist! But MJ, was one of a kind! Seen him live twice! :)
I've always had the utmost respect for the music that Michael Jackson made, but THIS?!? Broken down and listening to the intricacies of individual tracks is NUTS! True musical genius!v
Utmost. Utmost respect
@@spareplanet Yes, you are right. I'd blame spell-check but it was just me mistyping a word.
Yeah, ummm, maybe he had just a little bit of help putting the track together. I’m not stating that as a fact, just kind of guessing.
@sangertx9077 so you're basically assuming just like most ignorant/arrogant people 🙄🤦🏽🤣
