I totally agree with you. It's been my favourite ever since the album came and i always wonder why people (including fans) can't see how great this song is
MJ is the only artist I've ever heard have a hit song with so many different styles of music for example Don't Stop (Disco), Beat It (Rock) Man In The Mirror (Gospel), Rock With You (R&B), You Are Not Alone (Ballad), Billie Jean (Pop Song), Thriller (Dance Song), etc.
Thank god someone is focusing on his amazing art instead of the false allegations! This should be aired on TV or Netflix studying his magnificent artistic legacy and why he's the GOAT! Do a 10 part documentary on Jackson, this should be seen by millions. Thanks for this Chris.
This to me is the saddest song ever recorded in the history of music. I got the Dangerous tape for my 4th birthday. The way this song used to wreck me when I was a little kid, not knowing heartbreak...or a word of English, wow! It still can transport me to a very dark, sad place 31 years later.
This is one of Michael Jackson's heavyweight songs of all time. In this song he is telling a story & at the same time he gets hurt deep by the story. I love You MJ forever and thanks Chris, for sharing this masterpiece
I really like this one because it captures almost everything that made him great as a vocalist. I love specifically the rhythmic breathing and crying, the grit in his voice, the low larynx and riffs on "we made our vows we'd live a life anew", the beatboxing, and all the made up words caroling and added syllables like in "I pray this punishment would have mercy on me". Putting his dancing aside, just vocally alone he's absolutely outstanding. Great analysis as always.
I've always loved the "scat" portion of this song. He is so rhythmic in his ad libs, even when he actually gets lost and drifts away from the lyrical narrative - his emotions completely take over. Insanely great.
Chris My man, I always wanted to hear 14.50, that man cried/singed, how the hell did he gave so much healing to music. It’s like the song is crying. Thank you so much Chris!
I remember digging through my fathers CDs to maybe find an album or anything from Michael Jackson. "Who is it" was the only single he had and I couldn't stop listening to it. Still one of my absolute favorites!
You know what I keep noticing about Michael when he’s distorting his voice like that? A lot of people use a technique like that and sound like the distortion is on their voice. Michael’s distortion is AROUND his voice. There’s still a bell-like clarity to it. I think it’s like he pushes it just enough to get that effect but is somehow still clean at the same time. And, I think that has a lot to do sigh the variety of vocal textures as you mention. There’s so much there across even just a few notes.
I think Who Is It is one of his finest vocal performances and one of his best songs. Thank you for these videos. You really get MJ as an entertainer. He gave his all to entertain us and this proves it. Those ad libs at the end are everything and more. Just amazing.
Thank you Chris for doing this analysis, this is what we fans need. Its time to remind the world what a force of nature MJ was especially on songs where he had total control of writing and composing. This video shines the light on the things world should be talking about. There should be more conversations around Michaels vocal powers. cheers mate!!!
Sir, you explained EXACTLY why I love this song so much all these year! This song just is reminiscent of somthing very painful and just melancholy. You worded everything so perfectly and took notes to the EXACT points I love about this song! That desperation, those sort breathes, that rage inside! Everything!! This might be my FAVOURITE VIDEO all time in UA-cam.! You might get spike in view juat cause I'll be hanging here for God now how many years to come constantly listing to your beautiful analysis of this splendid song! Thank you again for thia review.
I still get goosebumps listening to this song 30 years later. Growing up in Germany I was so obsessed with this album when it came out. I was 6 years old. I didn’t understand a word of English. Love Michael i was crushed when he died.
It’s one of my fav from Dangerous, which is hard for me to say because that album is a masterpiece especially the underrated, unmentioned tracks like Keep The Faith.
Hearing the "weeping" part almost made me dizzy. I am shocked, actually and feel like I intruded his privacy 😖He was SO brave to be this honest in his music. Also, thank you for showing with your own voice and singing what Michael did in this song. Really awesome!
I love the way Chris goes through the original tracks and points out details that we don't hear in the final version, but that we feel with our body and soul. Good job Chris 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
You're most welcome! While the multitrack is out there with collectors it's rarely traded! So these vocals come from the 5.1 dvd stems which included a few snares mixed in which I tried to clean up to my best ability.
wow, people, rate this up - the comment is critically underrated! this is the man that literally is responsible for making our evening today! 🙌🏼 also, i’ve found 5.1 mix upload on your channel and it’s incredible. though i’ve listened to it in stereo in a fairly high quality headphones, but the imaging in this one is immediately noticeable to be different. since it’s probably my personal the most favourite MJ’s song, i can’t possibly be able to count how many times i’ve heard the regular studio mix, so this was a great refreshing change of perspective on the song. first and foremost - high percussion is treated differently, modulating its elements across pan during choruses, the choir voices are much more distinguishable and the orchestral strings come across in more details. so, i’d appreciate if you could specify, what’s the original source of this 5.1 version? was it available as a part of a DVD with music videos together with some sort of limited edition of album or something? btw, if played back the stems of 5.1 in isolation, is each one of them dedicated to an individual instrument or two? or besides the center channel, it’s more of like a bleed of everything with everything which become coherent only when combined?
Awesome vid mate. What u observed in this vid is exactly what makes me so passionate about Michael's art, all those shades and intense feelings that make the listener feel connected deeply to his music. It's a ride and a journey. his music has personally helped me throughout my life, whether its connecting with a certain feeling or for that escape its transcending, its "Godly" there is nothing in this world quite like it and that is why he is the Goat.
Is hard to indicate the best song of Michael Jackson but "Who Is It" was always my favorite one. I've been looking for such clear version of singing this song for a long time and.. you gave it to us. THANK YOU A LOT. GREAT JOB !!!!
Thank You, Chris. There's really only one word fits: Masterpiece. Since it was released, I've listened to it sooo many times and it's always very emotional. Yet I almost cried from 14:50. I don't think you can put more emotion into a song, more than that. Maybe it's never been SO revealing and vulnerable. I've probably never heard him be so sad, like here. You can't fake that, it's her reality that he lived and put 100% into this. What he said is really true here: If you want to know me, listen to my songs... This song deserved so much more, even though it was always a big fan favourite. Too bad he never sang it in concert. Musically, it's an amazing piece of work, but just with the vocals it's a real shock. Thank you Michael for leaving us such a treasure, it's one of the brightest pieces of your beautiful soul.
You really do understand the genius behind this man now, before I thought he was a genius because of how good his songs were. But now when I see all details, it’s beyond only good or genius!
3:20 yes! you're the first person ive heard talk about this, and I've always appreciated it. This is TRUE continuity. It establishes his whole catalog as a canvas with a solid line running through it. The hee hees and the beatboxing breaths . Its so complete. He did this in his dance and music videos as well. Through the years he always added new moves. But the same set of motions from Motown 25 were always there...
I clicked on this video so fast! I have been waiting for something this for so long and we finally get to see this masterpiece. Such raw emotions are displayed here, everything from voice to the weeps, sighs and moans. Absolutely love this song! ❤
In the final studio version he also beatboxes towards the extreme end. Last 10 seconds🔥 If you are a fan of Michael or want to listen to more of his music, please listen to his songs till the very end❤ He is the greatest ever🕊️
This is awesome!! I have been convinced for years that every love song, either joyous or about heartache, is about Diana Ross. He was hopelessly in love with her and she strung him along for years.
Thanks so much for pointing out the importance of every breath that Michael puts into his songs. For years, I have taken pride in knowing every single breath that Michael puts in his songs and that is what makes him the best!
Don't bother me! the crescendo build up for the last verse gets me everytime. He builds and builds similar to end of smooth criminal switching characters to deliver the final blow from vulnerable to aggressive = perfection.
Is It Scary is so, so underrated. The painful lyrics, the emotion and the beautiful story telling in that song, the key change, the power in the vocals that slowly increases throughout the song. A masterpiece along with this song.
My gosh. I must not binge watch these Michael deep dives but, for goodness sake, I've done 'Scream' & 'Who Is It' back to back. You are really rocking my world tonight with these videos. Thank you for the brilliant uploads. I'm full of funky fever now ❤ You
He does this live in the famous Oprah interview in 1992- can find it online , just a spur of the moment thing while sitting down at the edge of his neverland stage. Seen him live 3 times on 3 world tours , greatest experiences of my life
WHO IS IT!!! WHEN I FIRST HEARD IT, I SAID THIS SONG IS DEEP AND THIS SONG GRABS YOUR SOUL AND YOU CAN FEEL HIS JOURNEY.. I PUT THIS SONG RIGHT BEHIND BILLIE JEAN!! THE BEST PART OF THE SONG IS THE END WHEN HE GOES ACAPELLA WITH THE AB LIDS!!
Rolling Stone ranked Michael Jackson as the 86th best singer on their Greatest Singers of All Time list. There is a concerted effort to tarnish his legacy and reputation! SAD world we live in!
An absolute masterpiece. Thanks for this. Was just thinking he had pleurisy which water in the lungs so maybe he had to get creative with how he took in breath. Such a genius!
Thank you again, Chris! In many of Michael's songs I get the feeling he was telling 2 stories - one that is upfront and another that is slightly hidden in the unclearly articulated ad-libs and other "background" vocals. Most people listening to this song will know it's about a wife who has left for another man, and they'll hear the agony and heartache, but they probably won't realise the extent of the pain\emotion Michael added to the tracks and where that came from. But it is all there, even if we never find out why.
Michael literally cried on some songs. He felt his music that much. I forget what the track is on thriller but he genuinely was crrying at the end of it and quincy made sure to leave it in ...
This and Morphine, two of my favorite MJ "hidden gems," and MJ songs, period, for that matter, are incredible. Always makes me wish he'd have worked with Trent Reznor.
@@nataliamisixroni5447 where did you hear this. Would be cool to know because the downward spiral is a masterpiece but I would think Michael wouldn’t be a fan of the subject and theme of the album.

Love it Chris, keep the MJ videos coming! Would be awesome if you could find "They Don't Care About Us", such an underrated song and vocal performance!
This one made me sad and tear up. You can hear some despair, disappointment, desperation, and sadness all coming out of his voice. Thanks for sharing this one. As the youngins say, "it hits different now."
Thank you Chris!!! You have granted my request!! ..And I was literally crying along with him in that section of this performance/masterpiece (because simply calling it a "song" is almost an understatement). There's so much passion, and so much feeling in Michael's vocals here.. so much to fill all the world's music for ages upon ages! Thank you again, Chris! Here in Italy we say "ti voglio bene!", because this video made my day! Now I'll be waiting for your analisys of "Keep the Faith" isolated tracks, I assure you that you will find a lot in there too 😉
The way you articulate and find the appropriate wording for the commentary is a true skill..I listen to other people analyze Mjs recordings and none of them come close to what you do chris
Man, thank you for sharing these tracks with us. Your commentary is so insightful and passionate which makes these videos both educational and entertaining. Wonderful work Mr. Liepe!!
Yes thank you for finding this I love Who Is It. My all time favorite song from Michael this song that made love his artistry. The raw emotion in this song is everything. I wish u could do next haven can’t wait. Again, I’m gonna say Micheal Jackson was a true musical genius. There will never be another one he is one of true kings of music. Again, thank you.
Chris, thanks so much for this! I got the goosebumps listening in... This is the stuff I grew up with and having the chance to dissect it is phenomenal. Michael had a history of highly emotional studio productions. One clear example is She's Out Of My Life (Off The Wall) towards the end, right after the vocal highlight. Apparently they did many takes and Michael tried to restrain his emotions - but he wasn't able to
oh my gosh, this has always been one of my favourite songs since I was a child and to listen so clearly to his isolated vocals was a dream come true thank you so much, Chris!!!
First of all! Your voice is 🔥! And this is my all time favorite mj song or just song period! The emotion he put into this song is to be studied over and over again
Simply stunning, Dangerous is my favourite MJ album and Era. If you can get your hands on any other track from Dangerous, heard your Jam breakdown. Give In To Me would be immense to do.
Who is it new version: "And i love the way the rythym And he has to take some breaths Cuz if he doesn't breathe enough The song will very quickly end" 😅 5:21
I can’t stop watching the Michael Jackson videos you do and i only found you the other day! Please can you do butterflies by him? I think that would sound amazing especially his voice
Who Is It and Another Part of Me.. 2 of my best MJ tunes , especially outside the usual well known monster hits... The way you've covered this particular track ... definitely warrants hitting the subscribe button..
THANK YOU THANK YOU!! I LOVED this video!! I could feel your excitement for this track by the end of the video. This is by far one of MJ's greatest vocals I've ever heard. I have to agree this is the most underrated song of MJ. I think the record company did a disservice to MJ by releasing this as the fifth single. It should've been the second IMO. Thanks again for all the MJ dives.
Legend says he wrote this on hearing of Diana Ross’s sudden marriage to a man he’d never met. Quincy says everyone was scared to give him the news and Quincy’s little daughter Kidada was the one to tell him. Apparently He was devastated. “I’m so blue” was also during the same time. Apparently he thought him & Diana had a thing and he had hoped they would marry, so was blindsided.
Diana was playing with him a lot, but she never ever wanted anything serious from Michael. She just wanted attention and spotlight (Dirty Diana is about her as well, which is another masterpiece btw.)
She played with his heart and ran off and married some rich old man on the other side of the world. The man looked like he had one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel. She did Michael dirty . Her loss!
What if the song in many ways refers to Randy? It was him, whose girlfriend left him for his brother (Jermaine). "Is it my brother?". Monkey Business proves MJ was really upset about that. I think MJ rolled his and other people's experiences into one in his songs. Btw MJ had a fling with Whitney, but even in that Jermaine turned out to be the "other". I don't think MJ wrote directly about one experience, ever. He always used different experiences and rolled them all into one song/emotion.
Stop this silly pretending we all don't know Mike was a down low gay man, it's sad enough he had to live a lie for his career, stop referencing his planted decoy stories about none existent heterosexuality, it's wrong & infantile
Yes!! Chris, you did it!! And I can’t thank you enough for finding and analyzing this masterpiece of a song ❤ It’s just breathtaking! My MJ journey started with Who Is It and there was no turning back ever since. Thanks again, you’re awesome 😊
I was born in 1981, been a fan since 1987, and this is the song I would be humming whenever I'm relaxed or excited about something or even passing the time until today. The best song ever
That moment in the Oprah interview, when he started the beatboxing and then starting singing this song... pure magic.
That was the moment for me, too! Then I became obsessed with the Dangerous Album!
And after his death she threw him completely under the bus and I am done with her because of it
I could be wrong here, but I heard that that was his way of politely saying "stfu"

This was one of the finest UA-cam videos I’ve ever watched. My god, just bliss. Thank you Chris. We miss you Michael.
Because he went through that with a girlfriend he was with.
“I need to find the truth, but see what will I do” gosh the way he does the vibrato then goes with a raspy voice 😍😍😍 10:45
Amazing, I would play this on repeat, or just play tracks 9 to 12 of dangerous . So expressive you can literally feel the pain in his voice.
He was a huge fan of Nine Inch Nails’ the downward spiral. I want to believe that Morphine is heavily inspired from their sound.
@@nataliamisixroni5447 where did you hear this. Would be cool to know because the downward spiral is a masterpiece but I would think Michael wouldn’t be a fan of the subject and theme of the album.
@@sarahsullivan2230 I have responded to you twice with the link but for some reason I don’t see my comments, have you seen the link?
@@nataliamisixroni5447 no, there is no link 🙁
@@sarahsullivan2230 you can find the gear space forum online really I don’t know what’s happening everytime I post the link or even a description, the answer to you is not posted.
Yes yes yes, i love this song
Yay :) ! Glad I got to do it! :)
Being human makes the soul of any piece of arts. Wow Michael 💖💖💖
Liepe!!
MJ’s language was music. He speaks it well. It’s good that you are recognizing it and showing it to people.
Apparently they did many takes and Michael tried to restrain his emotions - but he wasn't able to
oh my gosh, this has always been one of my favourite songs since I was a child and to listen so clearly to his isolated vocals was a dream come true
thank you so much, Chris!!!
First of all! Your voice is 🔥! And this is my all time favorite mj song or just song period! The emotion he put into this song is to be studied over and over again
I love MJ. He was a true Artist! What a mastermind!
Wow, I was listening to this song on the weekend. That algorithm is no Joke. So glad to be able to experience this.
KEEP THE FAITH from this Record will be amazing too, fyi.
Simply stunning, Dangerous is my favourite MJ album and Era. If you can get your hands on any other track from Dangerous, heard your Jam breakdown. Give In To Me would be immense to do.
This is my favorite song of all time! Pure Gold!!! Thanks for this one Chris!
One of my favourites and boy did this exceed my wildest imagination
Had a lump on my throat during his breakdown, love this song so much more!
Who is it new version:
"And i love the way the rythym
And he has to take some breaths
Cuz if he doesn't breathe enough
The song will very quickly end"
😅

I can’t stop watching the Michael Jackson videos you do and i only found you the other day! Please can you do butterflies by him? I think that would sound amazing especially his voice
Just What I Was Waiting For... This Is My Favorite Song by MJ. Thank U!!!👍🙏
Who Is It and Another Part of Me.. 2 of my best MJ tunes , especially outside the usual well known monster hits...
The way you've covered this particular track ... definitely warrants hitting the subscribe button..
It's a heavy song with brilliant lyric from a music genius. Thx for this vid again, Chris..take a bow of You
THANK YOU THANK YOU!!
Agree, "Who Is It" is one of his finest and one of my Top 5 favorites
I SCREAMED! So excited to watch this one, I already know it's gonna be amazing. Thank you in advance!!!!
@@mrfreeze2446 Stop your bullshit the man is NOT gay!
Yes!! Chris, you did it!! And I can’t thank you enough for finding and analyzing this masterpiece of a song ❤ It’s just breathtaking! My MJ journey started with Who Is It and there was no turning back ever since. Thanks again, you’re awesome 😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
I was born in 1981, been a fan since 1987, and this is the song I would be humming whenever I'm relaxed or excited about something or even passing the time until today. The best song ever
The true mentor; MJ. 🤘🏻
