I do want to let you know, there ARE indeed safe ways to growl, if it hurts in the beginning it’s probably not safe. I do death metal growls, and my current technique has never once lead to any pain, where as most others I try will. I know you’re probably not trying to do a deep guttural, but I would suggest learning a basic false chord and playing with it, that can add a lot of emotion and depth to a song, as well as preserving your voice
I totally agree. I am myself a death metal growler and screamer, but, before I could growl, I had to find the false chords, and then build a whole sound about it

Don’t forget to polite growl clear your throat. Sounds like you’re doing the super harsh painful one to me. Keep it polite and light and you can do it for a long time.

This is not a safe way to learn how to growl. While it's correct that this type of growling happens at the back of the mouth, clearing your throat is bad for your throat. It also shouldn't feel scratchy after doing it only a few times and you definitely shouldn't need to increase volume when you raise the pitch, whether growling or not. I love that this singer wants to help other singers but this particular advice is likely do more damage than good.
