My grandpas neighbours wanted to reintroduce the fishes, so they drained the pond and cleaned away what was there. 10 years ago I catched many times 5 kilos carps, but then from canal which is nearby started to come OTTER. This animal killed all big fishes. When we drained the pond till the bottom there left no any big fishes anymore. So now neighbour going to make a fence around this pond to avoid this OTTER to come in the future.
Fish which was here:
Perch;
Wide - eyed fish;
Carp;
Crucian carp;
Cried;
Also some crawfishes.

I'm no professional BUT why didn't they just drain it over the grass just like when it rains?

That is the smallest 7 acre pond on the planet. Two acres would be an exaggeration on the ponds actual size. Good camera work, and really entertaining operator skills

Watching that operator trying to lift his machine out with the bucket in the exact opposite corner of where it should be was painful
was gonna roast but nah he got hit hard enough
Bit of a tip, next time you need to drain an area with a high capacity pump, lay down and stake about 10 metres of heavy duty plastic sheet. Set the pipe discharge 1 or 2 metres on to the sheet. The discharge water will spread on the plastic reducing its velocity and energy, reducing the damage to sensitive areas downstream. In the past we used the construction plastic, came in rolls total width was 3 or 4 metres. Worked a treat reducing erosion. Once finished, folded, rolled and removed, no fuss, no worries.
We use an open weave mat at the end when we drain pools, it spreads the water out and collects the trash like a filter
Not to mention fish and other wildlife.

dude they dug a channel and released water from a private pond into a local eco system and were prepared t allow a fish in all likelyhood not native to the local region into it! i think saying they dont give a shit about the sensitive areas downstream is putting it lightly!!
I am no expect and this is the first thing I though when I saw the pipe. Bad! Erosion damage is no joke.
Unless you were planning to install a permanent culvert or drain this was a million times more difficult than it had to be…
Why didn't they rent a high capacity water pump, 5k gpm, would have been done faster, cheaper, less invasive.

Their Finns I think or European, they always do things the hard way.

Looks like a opportunity to put in a drain for the pond before you backfill that trench. You will always be able to drain it quickly once it is sorted! 😊

I think you are likely right. At least for the majority of it.
I wasn't sure with the camera angles but it looked like the ditch was way lower than the pond and my first thought was the same as yours but even so a couple of heavy duty pumps would have saved a lot of mess,damage and money,then I thought 'maybe they're going to lay in a permanent pipe,apart from that I don't know what they were thinking.

PVC pipe, flexible couplers, shut off valve on one end and a one way valve on the other and a T cap to add water cost me way less than $150 to do.
Have any of you considered a siphon? input coarse filter to stop the fish getting sucked in. No damage to the landscape, you can run it for a couple of days to make sure you don't over load lower areas along the stream/trench you are dumping the water.

Looks like a water pump could have done the whole job. And it would not disturb the clay pond lining if it has one.
I was thinking that - and no making good of the grass, which seemed in pretty decent condition. I guess it was a 'do it in a hurry' job?

They moved rock in flip flops, trenched a line in established turf, punctured the pond lining, and buried a mini excavator when they could have just used a pump. Brilliant!

I like how one guy started to keep all the rocks in one pile, but was told to start another pile, only to later have to move all the rocks to the first pile.

I had same problem with otter killing fish in pond and found the most effective deterrent an electric fence as used on farms. The otter never came back or killed anymore fish.

The top soil sure runs deep in this area. It’s going to take years to get the water level back. Hope nothing was damaged down stream from the surge of water. The fish kill could have been done with a chemical that suffocates the fish. When the fish float to the surface they can be revived by placing them quickly in a tank of fresh water. We had a pond on land we recently purchased that we did this to. We filled several stock tanks with pond water just encase there were fish we wanted save. Good thing was the pond had very few fish in it.
Might be a good idea to install a culvert in the trench you guys dug and then seal the end in the pond, so if the pond needs emptying ever again it's easier

First thing I thought also. That’s Hella topsoil.
When I used to work for a construction/demolition company we were called out to drain a pond no less than 5 times bigger in size than that little 2 acre pond.
Not only was there invasive fish in it but there was also other issues. We were not allowed to let the invasive fish also reach any other waterways. And we had the similar idea to just trench into a canal system some distance away as also a small creek.
The hard part was figuring out keeping the fish from getting to the canal and creek while we drain it
My boss really didn't trust anyone.. for anything.. but I convinced him the best way was to dig the channel at an angle that left the side reaching the canal and creek just above it by a foot or so and line the entire thing with plastic.weigh it down with some rocks and use a heavy wire like horseshoe shaped to steak deep into the ground where they need to overlap plastic.This eliminated all erosion period. We used erosion control barriers to slow the water flow as it hits the out put areas.
I cut sections of smaller wire guage panels staggered in the trench as to work like a filter and grating system to keep fish from getting out into the canal ..they had to pass so may grate areas they most likely would never get that far.
Being the end spilled over into the canal and creek like a small spillway ..flat and leve, fanned out and shallow.. slightly raised..you could see that no fish ever got that far.
Once drained almost completely, we used pumps for the rest and we had fish and game come collect the invasive fish..the non invasive went into barrels we had ready...to keep them alive. Once emptied we did a clean up..did repairs on walls and made extended liners down into the pond to prevent erosion and any possible future too much saturation and other soil issues like soil luquification. Lines it all up with boulders to help weight things down and also to make environment for the fish.. natural habitat areas.
Before we filled the trench in we dropped in piping for future reference if needed. Being it ended just before the pond and the liners we played down led to it..we just overlayed them and used them like a giant plug and covered them up and that was it.. the pond liner prevents any water reaching the plug are anyway.. it took us a few days because the pond was massive..

Those fish are not gone .they are about 3 feet into the mud .but with that said a lot of them PROBALY went with the water . Carp are great to keep a pond from losing water . most people put them in ponds for that reason .they are mud fish and can live in the mud . great video

They didn't want to save the fish. They wanted to get rid of the fish, the fish was a CARP and they can be very hazardous to other fish.
I'd sure like to have some of that dirt for my garden!! The soil here in Florida is very sandy and drains too quickly to hydrate my plants properly. 🙁

I live in Bay County-pure sand with a water table barely below the surface. Go 15 miles from the Gulf and be 8 feet above sea level, with lakes fed by springs all around you.
One benefit, don't need gravel for the country roads, drain in minutes.
But you are lucky to live in an area where you can wake up in the morning having a wonderful brand new deep 'pond' in your backyard. If you're lucky, because it can also be under your house. ('sinkhole' for those who are not fluent in American humor).
Portend: You come back the next day and a beaver has already built a dam across your ditch. LOL
I always wear flip flops while moving heavy stones as well!

It wasn't stuck, just an operator that didn't know what he was doing. I had to learn myself. You can spin the unit over that ditch if its strong enough. Or spin it before the breach of the dam. It looked like they was having a good time.

@@aig9672 you already have a hole called a pond. And in just a few hours that ditch could be filled in seeded and strawed. I've seen people try siphon(2") and pumps that get clogged. Now let's justify the ditch, id advise plumbing a 4" line with a valve. Just in case this needs to happen again. Hit the valve and in 3 days its empty. In one weekend this project would be complete with a novice crew.

Thanks for sharing. A beautiful location for raising a family. Draining and starting over is a great way to control invasive fish species. They don't live if there is no water. It also allows time to perform maintenance on the pond itself. Bottom and sides be cleared of debris, a permanent drain line installed in trench, and drain control valve.
Looks like you have planted trees along property line to form a windbreak. The riprap to control erosion on sides of pond is really beautiful looking rock. And hand placement of the rocks really shows your talent.
Yea drain the invasive species from your pond into the near by waterways.....

Not sure if the stream lay at a lower level than the bottom of the pond. If it did, a large bore siphon like letsdig18 uses would have worked for that job.

Yes, pond will fill naturally within 2-3 weeks. Otter is eating fish. We will fight with this otter to do not lose fishes. Fence, electric wires etc ;)

Yes, it's easy to move across a small trench. Not so easy when the small trench suddenly becomes a large trench directly underneath you.
Always nice to see a project from start to finish. Most of those who want to critique the work probably never had to put together sometime like this. It's more complicated than they know.

i don't think this was well planned. I couldn't believe how the digger was straddled over the ditch especially because there was no reinforcement. When the exercise was over what was the plan to get the digger to either side of the ditch?
The plan was to pour concrete under the excavator so it has a footing to get out
Here in the US you would need a permit from the town, a permit from the Agricultural Society, a permit from the Save the fish Society and permits from a bunch more societies. They would have to make sure nothing is endangered and if it is, NO PERMIT.
Meanwhile, a few miles down the road, there is a clogged culvert and someones house is floating away.

That's a beautiful pond but you should have some type of tree trunk or structure in the middle for smaller fish breeds that can grow and provide food for the larger fish
Otters are very smart. They can dig under fences and can climb over them. Need electric fence around pond. wire very low to ground and then a bit higher and higher again and again and again.
