That high spark advance when letting off the gas is exactly what you were saying. It burns off unused fuel more efficiently, so unburned gas isn't being dumped into your exhaust.
I wish the guys here in Maryland driving around Infinitys with the exhaust chopped off would add this. I can't get on the highway without hearing POP POP POP POP POP

Started doing this about 20 years ago on OBD1 cars, and one huge suggestion (especially for noobies) is to have a lined notepad sitting there. Jot down the version of tune you’re working on and WRITE DOWN what you changed! Everything. It’s great to think you’ll remember… trust me, you won’t.
When you go out for a drive and notice “something” feels gimpy, you can just flip back version after version and see what made things better or worse.

Really would love to get a video that talks about idle tuning on the GEN IV. This guide gets you running, but leaves you stranded for polishing up the idle once everything else in dialed in a little bit. My car runs great now when out driving. However, there are no decent idle tuning/polishing guides for the Gen IV. So how do we get our idle perfect?

    • @limabravo6065

Easy way to avoid this is removal of catalytic converters, I live in an emissions compliant location so once a year I have to bolt my cats back in and throw in my “CAT” tune that is rich enough to run safely at 55mph but still passes the smog test. For everyday driving the cats are removed and replaced with fakes from eBay (California will perform visual spot inspections). I’m moving back home to PA to A. Great info, and well presented as always. When you do the Gen 3 specific stuff you should point out that too big of a number in the colder part of the base airflow table can cause problems and that doing the IAC count adjustment procedure to open up the throttle plate a bit will help reduce the desired airflow number and let you get away with running a smaller number in your idle airflow table. And geez that Gen 5 torque based stuff looks like a whole different world to me, looks quite a bit more complicated than the Gen 3 stuff. I haven't even worked on a Gen 4 yet never mind a Gen 5.

    • @highlanderc
      @highlanderc 4 роки тому +1

actually the gen 3 is the more complicated idle setup just because of the way it works... gen iv is easy and so is gen V. a lot of OS optimization is needed to make the gen III stuff actually work rather well.. .although not entirely needed.

Hey bud, no reason to delete your comments, if your disagree with something just say it, were here to talk about tuning, no one here taking down to anyone else, I'm sure you're used to that else where but we're a family here that wants to learn about tuning. EOIT isn't rocket science, you just need to understand what your valve train is doing at what angle.

Hey man i know this is an old video. Ive learned what i know from your videos. I had someone show me that you can change the idle adaptive spark control under spark, advanced. Basically you take the overspeed and underspeed settings and making them +/- 20 degrees to get the cam to idle choppier. This goes backwards from tuning. But who doesnt want it to chop a little at the red lights🤷. Is this bad. How would it affect the tune or engines performance/durability. Could you shed some advise on this please. Thank you!

    • @GoatRopeGarage

Perfectly fine for a choppy tune, shouldn't hurt anything but if you take it too far it may cause stalls coming off throttle and stumbles getting on throttle, just have to find a happy median.

Totally agree. I dove into this about 12 years ago and I’m still learning, of course. Spent a lot of money on literature and dvds to learn everything. Specifically from a GM calibrator that was good, I won’t mention. But the first time you plug up tuners into the car and make a couple changes, all of those expenses just paid for themselves. -my take on it. We would spend 1200 for a tune now typically. I spent 350 back in the day but that was a stock with long tubes 2000 camaro.

    Hello,
I'm watching your channel a few weeks and I think You are the one that can help me with my 2000 firebird with corvette c5 engine swap + cam swap to highlift hotcam with 218/227 .600 .600 LSA 114+5 ICL 109 specs. I'm struggeling with the coldstartup and can't find the problem, anything I try seems to be wrong. She starts fine, but immediately dies in fuel. Only manually regulate idle with the accelarator pedal can maintain idle. idle is on 1200 to 900 across the range, base running airflow is about 30 - 40% raised. After about 30 seconds she can maintain idle by herself. Hi-, Low-Octane tables are matched, also the throttle closed in P and Drive are matched. My tuner can't find or is not motivated to help properly. Hope You or someone who reads this can give me several tips to get my Firebird started. Funny part: If the outside temperatures are rising, about room temperature 16-22°C, 60-70°F, it is possible that she fires up and runs like a dream.
    Regards

I do this trial and error, and I'm nit really sure what to do. The idle advance in Park and In Gear I set 24 degrees up to 1200 rpm and from 0-0.28.
I don't understand the VE and only working on a tune that based on nutty tuner who thinks he's the LS god of europe...
I'm really scared to get to deep in this and screw up. After start enrichment and that stuff is stock.
Base running airflow on 0-40 degrees C is round about 45 g/s to 30 g/s and interpolates to down to 10.5 g/s from 80 degrees till the end of that table in Gear and in Park/Neutral as well.
I'm experimenting with startup initial, startup initial decay, STIT and some tables I understand what they're going to do. FA Multi Stage is also trial and error.
A while ago I was thinking to get this HLHC out of the block and stick back to 02-04 c5 z06 cam...
Now it's going to be colder in the mornig and that fucking car struggles again in coldstart.

Because you start in Open Loop and stay in OL until it's enter in CL. Probably why you can't stay in idle until ~30 secondes. If you have too much airflow at startup and it flares a lot, the engine can bounce in RPM and die too.

@@ron7922 it's fairly easy, just a trial and error kind of thing where you dial it back a bit, see if it helps, then keep adjusting.
