- ⚡Join me on an impromptu solo wild camping 'micro adventure,' where I share some futher thoughts on the renowned Durston X-Mid tent, and putting a cheap ultralight sleeping bag from Aldi to the test. I decided to take advantage of a small weather window, promptly heading for the picturesque local hills right after work. A short but invigorating hike awaits, leading me to a high campsite above Glen Sherup.
⛏ Gear Used:
Durston X-Mid 1P
Aldi Adventuridge ultralight sleeping bag.

My wee local Ochils. Done the Glensherup Horseshoe many times. Great wee circuit.
I'll go back on a nice winter's day and finish the circuit. 😁 👍🏼
Cracking always a good watch
Cheers Andrew. 😁 👍🏼
Nice one Robin! A night out on the fells or home watching Netflix? No brainer!🤣🤣👍👍
Tentflix. 😁 👍🏼
good little adventure mate, good to try new gear out especially some good budget alternatives. TFS Steven
Cheers mate, these hills are similar in character to the Cheviots. Sleeping certainly done a job. 😁 👍🏼
Great stuff. I've never had Horlicks, but you're such a fan now I am curious! Cheers
Ha, you definitely need to try it. Buy a sachet from the supermarket so if I don’t like it you’re not stuck with a tub of the stuff.
Robin, wild raspberries are the business👍 A bit of a Horlicks forgetting more water😊 though the right choice before bedtime💤 Did the beastie🪲get to spend the night in the Durston? Micro adventures are a cool way to avoid sitting on the couch watching Netflix😊
They're much better than the supermarket offerings, that's for sure. 🍓 😋 I think that beastie was on the outside of the inner, I didn't see it until editing the video. 😂
I enjoyed that mate! Cup ‘a’ soup👊 and Netflix is over rated
Cheers Al. It's all about Tentflix mate. 😁 👍🏼
@@WalkWithWallace 😂😂😂
Good stuff Robin , i've never been on they hills either , maybe sometime. I bit of a bummer with the water situation.. Good to get out though ..cheers Stevie
Cheers bud, aye maybe get a winter camp in with you either here or your local efforts. 😁 👍🏼
Nice one Robin, shame about the morning view but belter spot regardless. Looks a lovely wee area that I’ve not heard of tbh, looks like loads to explore. Tent looking canny. Cheers and thanks for sharing, Atb, Dave
Cheers Davie, they're not to dissimilar to the Cheviots. Maybe not as boggy. 😂
Good to meet you, that was my silver van in the carpark 😊
Nice chatting mate, hope you enjoyed the cycling event. 🚴
@@WalkWithWallace thanks it was a great weekend.
Back to the hills now
5 minutes before you hit the cairn at the firebreak there is a stream running down from Innerdownie. Handy for the next time you give the horseshoe a try mate. 👍
Cheers mate, you're spot on. I clocked that stream on the way down. 😁 👍🏼
Enjoyed the video mate 😍..Looks a cracking tent😁..Great edit as well 😁👌🏻..Never been to that neck of the woods before.Great wee video mate.
Cheers
Murchie
Cheers Robert, I reckon I'll be doing plenty winter camps there. Can be a lot of hassle driving up north eh.
@@WalkWithWallace Nice one mate😁..Looks a cool place 😍⛺️👌🏻
Nice spot Robin, know that one well. Nice to see a vid go up of my local hills, some great walking round the horseshoe and surrounding areas. Liked the shelter, looks pretty solid. Loads of camping on the Ochils but a stranger to them this year. Enjoyed the film, loved the clouds, all the best bud, until the next one ⛺️
Cheers Sean, definitely a great area to have on your doorstep. I was getting a bit bored of the Pentlands, so this gives me something new. 😁
All you needed was some epic Scottish bagpipes for the tent fog reveal to really set the tone.
Ha, definitely missed a trick there. 😄
Enjoyed the Austin Powers ref there Robin 🤣 but have to say the dulcet Scottish accent doesn't quite carry it through!😁😂
Going to try harder next time or maybe Fat Bastard as he's Scottish. 😂 😂
Might be worth looking at the flames creed quilt for summer, well priced for what it is.
I'm always a bit concerned about the welfare of the birds with Chinese products, as they're not renowned for animal welfare. 🤔
Gorgeous work my friend, these clouds created gorgeous atmosphere!
Thank you. 😊 👍🏼
Excellent, I’ve just used the x mid pro 1 for the 1st time and loved it
Mint mate. 👌🏼 What does the DCF version weigh?
@@WalkWithWallace 460g mate, it’s a game changer really is. I loved it last week on the Brecon Beacons ( video is up if you want to take a look) I didn’t get it set up correctly (user error ) but it was still fantastic
@@Craigsoutdooradventures oooft, that is uber light. Yeah, I haven't quite got the perfect pitch yet either.
@@WalkWithWallace Dans latest video update on pitching and common problems kinda explains what I did wrong, so confident I can get it better on the next trip. You watched it yet?
@@Craigsoutdooradventures yeah, it was really useful. I was almost there tbh.
I've done the horseshoe a few times now and it's become a bit of a favourite and also a change from the usual hills on the west coast. I love going through the firebreak because there's always a great collection of mushrooms/toadstools. Another interesting video-thanks
Cheers Terry, I'm looking forward to going back to finish the route. Might save it for winter. 😁 👍🏼
Very nice, when i was there was mystery box south west of the Innerdownie summit
Was it one of those geocache boxes, with a notepad and bits and bobs?
Aye :) was there 2 years ago.
@@EllipticDawid25 wonder if that's still a thing? 🤔
was a long time prabably away with wind :D @@WalkWithWallace
😂
Nice to see someone camping around my locals. Great video 🙌
Cheers mate. 😎 Looking forward to exploring them more.
Simply shoo berb bosh. Nearly 10k man🎉
Cheers Jimmy. It's taking an age to get to 10k. 😂
@@WalkWithWallace you will get there Robin and hopefully a snowball effect comes where you can make some decent UA-cam bucks👍
@@jimmyboyd817 aye, it's a marathon not a sprint Jimmy. 😎 👍🏼
@@WalkWithWallace I want to buy the rights to your SuperBosh t-shirts up the Barras!
@@jimmyboyd817 I'm onto my designers as we speak. 😜
Touwt like a 🐯😂 Nice wee overnighter bud. Think I've been up that way years ago when I did that, ootdoor college course. Nice tae have new hills oan yur doorstep eh
Ye coming for a winter camp later this year. 😉
@@WalkWithWallace mibze... I'll sleep in your spare bedroom. 😉
😂 That's what it's there for.
Its been a big black beetles year for me whereas last year it was a mixture of earwigs & ants.. Nasty bitey ants... Oh and slugs.. lots of slugs this year.. Nice camp.. 👍
Aw yuck, hate earwigs, got loads of them in my garden.
Hi Robin, nice video mate. It’s amazing isn’t it these great spots close to home we always tend to ignore. I was out today in an area 45 mins from my house and I’d never been there before. Just always head to the lakes. Cheers for sharing your adventure as always mate. 😀⛰🥾🏕️🏴
Cheers Dave, yep I'm totally guilty of just driving past the local efforts to go to the Highlands. Sometimes you can do with out the long drive too. 😎 👍🏼
💪❤️🇮🇪
👍🏼 😁
Nice spot that and camped there myself many years ago. Surprised you didnt see any hill runners as they tend to go round that section a lot. Atb
Pre UA-cam days camp?
Met one runner, just finishing, there was only two other cars with my late arrival.
Nice spot, Robin,
As you said, the tent looks wonky, but as long as it does the job.
I'm sure I had one of them aldi sleeping bags, and it performed ok for the summer months.
Cheers mate, for £20 the sleeping bag is decent. Wouldn't want to push that comfort limit though. 😂
Not the greatest views Robin but another wee adventure 🥾 let me know how you got on with the Aldi bag as i bought one as well but have yet to try it out, i was looking at the water pouch swinging about thinking 🤔 that would do my nut in, just as you said "this things doing my nut in" 😂 Nice one Robin 👌 atb Brian 👍
Cheers Brian, definitely don't want to go much lower than 9-10°c in that sleeping bag, I could feel the cold spots. 😬
@@WalkWithWallace cheers Robin 🥶
Guid wee summer bag though.
Hi pal, thats an interesting place to camp and not too far hmm need to check what buses goes there and may go there myself one day.
Btw. I actually like the look of the tent, but wish they were a bit darker stealthy.
Cheers Gregory, I'm not sure Glen Devon is served by bus? 🤔 Wonder if you'd have to get the bus to Dollar/Tillicoultry and walk via Kings Seat? A couple other colours would be nice. 🏕
The Ochil Hills are funny for things like water, Robin - best carry some more with you on your next trip. Pity about the morning clag, but near enough to repeat soon - especially as, I don't imagine there's much your Mrs hasn't long since worked out about you...! Have you tried Bishop Hill in Fife/Kinross, by the way? There's a nice spring just by the path near the top of Glen Dale...
Hi Paul, think you're right. There's a stream just before the cairn for the fire break. I'll collect from there next time. Yeah I did East Lomond then drove around to Bishop Hill a few winters ago when the A9 was closed. Did West Lomond with the missus and camped with Ray on a different occasion.
Well done mate I think on the admin side we all kind of forget about water at times! 😉 Are you going to be testing the X-Mid in typical winter weather? I've yet to see anyone put them through there paces yet on that front. 🤔 Glad your still getting out and about! 👍
I'd probably revert back to my Scarp for winter conditions, but may be tempted to give the Durston a try. 🤔
@@WalkWithWallace I'm wondering if it has a 4 season inner I'd maybe concider it.
@@greyhikes5236 definitely is a solid inner Grey. 😁
Any chance you can show us how you pack away your x-mid please Robin? I've just got mine (x-mid 2) but she's nae been out in anger yet, only the garden. I folded it back up & into its bag, but I saw a vid of Dan Durston packing away an x-mid 1 and he picked it up by the ridge-line and it sort of folded it in on itself. ATB
I'm sure I just fold it 3-4 times in on itself long ways then roll. Will check previous footage, as I'm sure I filmed unrolling it when brand new.
Just looked back at the footage, it's folded into 4 long ways before being rolled up. I've also just stuffed it in after a camp.
@@WalkWithWallace Nice one, Cheers for looking Robin........ It's that age-old quandary isn't it....... To stuff or to fold & roll! ATB
@@totomesch1940 it feels intuitively wrong to stuff, but probably makes no difference.
Hi Robin. Just wondering…when you turned your sleeping mat around there are several, what I presume are repairs on the underside. I was considering buying this mat. What is your opinion on it’s long term durability? Cheers.
Hey mate, I painted silicone crosses underneath to try and prevent the mat slipping. Touch wood it hasn't let me down and I've had a fair few camps and bothy nights with it. I get a good night's sleep on it too.
@@WalkWithWallace Thanks for replying. Sorry, I thought they were repairs! 🙄
Always trust and value your recommendations. Thanks.
@@phillpot. You're welcome and thank you 😎 👍🏼
