When my brother broke up with his long-time girlfriend, I invited him over to Scotland, where I was studying, for some processing-time. We packed for a weekend in the highlands, hitting a couple of Munroes. Forecast was 2 days of glorious sun. At the peak of the first tip, about 6 hours away from the car, the weather changed rapidly - in 10 minutes we went from full summer to full-on hail, wind and mist, like on this video. Navigating by compass (pre-GPS), we made it 1000' down to a little flat area, where we raised the tent, crawled in and then proceeded to cook. Never in my life has food tasted so good. Followed by a whisky and then blissful sleep. There is simply nothing like being out in the weather, prepared. Next morning the sun was back up and we enjoyed our coffee with glorious views over the huge reservoir. Glorious trip.
Sounds like an incredible and clearly memorable trip 👍. The kind of trips where the weather turns and it isn’t quite as you expected can sometimes be the best. Thanks for sharing and taking the time to comment!
Great Experience... Ever done Norway 🇳🇴 Sweden 🇸🇪 Finland 🇫🇮 ? Something to think about? 🤔 Perhaps New Scotland... Cape Breton Island Nova Scotia.. 🏴 🇨🇦 Canada..
Hey I was homeless for 12 years .I lived in a tent out in the woods , I had a carpet, a fold up table and a plastic dresser to keep my clothes in I cooked on a colman propane twist on burner.I had tubs to keep groceries, a cooler for ice now I am inside it was hard to accurate living indoors. All seasons. I'll be turning 70 years old on January 4th. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
That’s a long time to live the tent life but I’m sure you became a pro and handling all types of conditions. Hope you have a happy New Year and a wonderful 70’s birthday. All the best!
Glad you're back inside. I live in my car for 5 months of the year. Been at it for about 16 yrs. I figure 4 more and I can retire from my civilian job. Stay safe bro.
I was homeless before joining the military. The military won't help you untill you're homeless my friend told me after he got out he fell on bad times. He was homeless 3 weeks had to crash on my couch 3 weeks.Had he told them they would have put him at bottom of the list
Climbing into a shelter is one of the most primitive experiences. I still get the chills remembering when I was a kid settling in for the night in my grandparents tent.
I agree! I think that’s what I like the most about camping. Instead of worrying about the day-to-day stuff that may be happening in your life you just focus on the basic needs food, water, shelter. And when you climb into the tent once those primitive needs are met it’s just the best 😀👍. Thanks for the comment!
@@GoingSoloOutdoors I absolutely agree! As simple as it is, zipping up for the night has a sense of well being that so many never experience. Sad in a way...
I used to work in the mountains as a Gamekeeper and you have to be prepared for all weather at all times. My best friend was a thick wool jumper, Solway zipper Barbour jacket and my thumb stick. If you’re ever stuck on a mountain, follow the sheep tracks downhill. They generally take a sensible path and will inevitably take you to habitation.
Definitely always best to be prepared 👍. That’s great advice, the sheep paths are extremely helpful here in the lakes and in Snowdonia. I often follow them when I’m heading off trail to explore an area, either up or down the mountain. They’ve definitely led me to some nice spots. I also often follow the game trails when I do woodland camps. These animals are definitely experts of the terrain. Appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment! ATB

The microphone wind noise isn't a problem for me. It only adds to the true atmosphere of the scenes being portrayed and takes nothing away. Enormously better than any music you could use instead. Great video!
Glad you don’t mind the wind noise. It only starts to bother me in the video when the audio starts popping. For the most part the wind filter helps a lot though. Especially on the GoPro. Appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment👍
@@GoingSoloOutdoors Your hike wouldn't take so long if you didn't have to keep going back for your camera. Just carry it and show the view as you hike.
@@SwampGal yeah I could do that but this is just the style of filming I’m now accustom to. I like the walk away shots also because it gives a sense of scale as well. Thanks for the comment 👍
I live in the Lakes people don,t realize how quickly the weather can change thank heavens our mountain rescue people are there for people who need help.good video.x
I agree, Mountain Rescue is fantastic. I just with more people would go into the lakes prepared for these changing conditions so mountain rescue does not need to be called. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment! All the best
I'm in Argyll and Bute on the edge of the Lcoh Lomond and Trossxchs national park and I've a friend who's in the mountain rescue and he's had to rescue tourists half way up a Monroe in shorts and t-shirt in March!!! That is an absolute death wish. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best in the mountains imo
It would be fun to do more multiday trips like this but as a dad with young kids it’s just not as feasible at the moment. One day I’d like to have a small place secluded in the middle of nowhere though.
@@GoingSoloOutdoorsI understand having young children. All four of mine are adults now so it’s our time to do things we enjoy. I would love to live secluded in the middle of nowhere! ❤
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the camping sounds. They can make for a cozy time in the tent as well but maybe not as cozy as a bed at home 😀👍 Thanks for taking the time to comment!
Unable to hike and camp due to health, but watching you do it brings back all types of sight, sound smell and even taste memories ! Thankyou …new sub here 👍
Thx for the reminder about the limitations of even a specialist mountain forecaste. There is a saying among climbers and hill walkers in Scotland that you must be prepared for challenging weather at any time of the year - so summer season just reduces the risk. In 2nd week of april this yr I knew that but chose to be lazy, make excuses, and not check MWIS and MountainForecaste. Afteral I am only going Ochill hills and 700m summit, which are north of edinburgh, not the Highlands and 2nd week April! I was caught in a snowstorm on summit all night that blocked all communications and made me think I may have to collapse the tent onto me and remain in place 2 or 3 days until it cleared. In fact the Jack wolfskin gossamer 1 tent held remarkably. My story is not to convey how great I was but rather how a 'make excuses attitude' about mountain fundamentals can lead to genuine hazard. Thx for posting. JMO.
Well said and wow what a story. Definitely best to always be ready for anything. I’ve learned the hard way a couple times. Not mistakes I’d likely make again. Thanks for taking the time to comment and share your story! ATB
I went on a school outing to the Ochills it was a beautiful day so the teachers walked us up Alva Glen when we got to the top is was raining the clouds had dropped below us we couldn’t see anything below us. We were stuck for four hours waiting for the rain to clear and a clear path beck down, When anyone says their going mountain climbing I’m gone never again will I climb any mountain knowing what can happen I never understand why people enjoy this but each to his own.
@eleanorcrawford9978 I was interested in your reply. I was coaching a young beginner here in Edinburgh. I think the first thing I said was look out for the midge fly because if caught in a fly blizzard the experience can be so shocking for a first timer young boy/girl that it leaves a mark that is not easily left behind. Perhaps as a school girl/boy you had one of those experiences for which you were vulnerable because it came too soon. I said to this young person not to try winter before 2 yrs of experience in the hope she would similarly not be confronted too early. Thanks so much for sharing. JMO.
Definitely had the weather 👍 I got a little bit of everything on this one. Really appreciate you taking the time to comment and checking out some of my other videos! ATB
Absolutely 👍. I use to hike in Rocky Mountains in Colorado over the summers. Every day without fail the mountain would generate a storm. Thanks watching and taking the time to come in! ATB
Thanks! On overnight camps I typically like to prepare a meal. It gives me something to do, and the end result is always a bit more rewarding than a dehydrated meal. I highly recommend trying this. It’s really tasty! Appreciate you taking the time to comment! ATB
It’s a very atmospheric place. I am very fortunate I can get out once a month for a camp like this. Hope you get some time to get outside! Thanks for taking the time to comment!
Hi, I've just come across your videos, I really enjoy watching wild camping videos as I'm now disabled and also 70, so watching these kind of videos means I'm watching you do something I'd like to have a go at I guess you could say I'm living vicariously through you. It was a great video, crazy weather though in the lake district it's pretty much normal 4 season in one day is what Great Britain can and often does give you. I've subscribed and I can see you have lots of videos for me to watch, which I will be doing. Take care
That is really nice to hear! Although I am still able to do these camps I also often watch videos of other people hiking and camping when I do not have the opportunity to get outside myself. I really appreciate you subscribing and taking the time to comment! All the best 😀
I lived for 8 years in a dumpster behind a very busy Italian restaurant. They used to throw away their leftovers and dump the garbage in there so I always had plenty to eat. When it was cold I made a little cocoon inside the pasta. It was surprisingly warm. I got along pretty well except I always smelled like garlic bread. Now that I'm married and in a nice home I still get a little nostalgic for those days. A couple times a year I find a smelly dumpster to spend a couple nights in for old time's sake.
Well filmed. Just like being there. Except from the comfort of my bed. I used to cycle camp so brought back the same feelings. The wind noise is part of the experience. Thanks.
What a great meal. That gyros did look amazing. I normally do multi-day hikes in the mountains so my food is normally dehydrated and boring. Thank you for making the video and sharing
Thanks it was pretty tasty! You should definitely try making it! I only cook like this for single night camps. If I’m doing a multi day, I will absolutely take a dehydrated meal as well. Thanks for taking the time to comment!
I live in the Lake district. Up on those hills you have to be prepared for any thing and it comes in so quickly. No matter what the weather forecast gives you. That mist can disorient you too.
Absolutely mesmerizing! Your solo camping journey through the mountains amid hail, rain, and thunderstorms is both inspiring and breathtaking. Your resilience and the stunning footage truly capture the raw beauty and challenges of nature. Well done!
Thank you! It was a fun trip. The weather here in the UK can definitely be challenging but it’s always beautiful despite the weather. Appreciate the comment!
Glad you liked the cooking. I stopped a couple times to wait for passing storms. Made the audio a bit to distracting. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! ATB
I hiked the Laugavegur Trail with a pyramid tent for 4 days in the last September, and the conditions were similar. I came from a warm country, and my first trip ever more than a day, it was harsh. In the second part I remember saying that I will not return to Iceland again, when stood before the last bridge, I wished to bring my future family here again. A trip like this really puts things in perspective. On the one hand it forces you to deal with the basics, including the language of nature, which comes with its sincere beauty. On the other hand, I began to understand and appreciate the whole idea of being part of a community/civilization. Watching your video tingles that inner spot, I don’t know how to call it yet, for such an hikes more occasionally.
Thanks for sharing your story. What I like most about going for a hike and camp is that it forces you to be 100% present in the moment. As you said, you’re forced to think about the basic needs. Finding a suitable spot to spend the night, setting up your shelter, finding water, preparing a meal, staying warm, etc. It can make you appreciate the conveniences of life but often I look forward to the little escape from the stresses of daily life that it provides. There’s nothing quite like it. I really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. I hope you have a great weekend! All the best
Two friends of mine were hitch-hiking and hiking in sweden in the mid 80s. Bo Hilleberg took them in his car and after an hour of driving invited them to his house. In the end he gave them one of his first tunnel tents. The Hillebegr tents cost a lot, but are definitely worth the invested money.
That’s a really cool story 👍. They definitely are not cheap but the quality and storm worthiness is incredible. Appreciate you taking the time to comment! ATB
Great video as always. This one reminded me of when I went up Snowdon, I should have had 18 Tent Pegs, but when I looked I had only 17, turns out i had left one of them on the kitchen table. It had actually fallen on the floor and was just out of sight behind the chair leg. If the legs of the chair had been thicker I probably would have seen it, but they are the really thin kind of chair legs, so yeah it made it impossible to see it. Anyway it almost ruined my trip, but I was able to Macgyver one of of a thick branch, by using my knife and making one end a sharp point. For a branch it worked very well, and stayed secure the whole night. Anyway long story short, the trip ended in success and I had a fantastic time.
Nice. Often when I am tarp camping in the woods I won’t even bring pegs to save weight. Plenty of branches to make pegs with in the forest 👍. Thanks for watching another video and taking the time to comment!
I was surprised you were able to use the Trangia Triangle on the vestible floor without anything to protect the floor from the stove heat. That is great. And you lamb gyro looked wonderful. My first video with you. It was very well done.
Thanks! The trangia triangle actually lifts the stove high enough off the ground I have never had to worry about the heat underneath. It’s actually one of the reasons I like the stove so much! I really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment! ATB
Great video and trip. Looks like you got the right gear for it. I see Hilleberg, Trangia, Fjällräven same as I use here in Sweden for solotrips all year round- for comfort and safety. Thanks and keep up the good work!
It’s kind of crazy when I think about the best gear I own it … most of it really does all come from Sweden 😂. You guys design/make some of the best gear in the outdoor industry 🙏🙌. Appreciate the comment!
Thank you! The weather is very different than what I experienced living in the North East US but I’ve really grown to love the harsh conditions here. I’ve been to Australia long ago. I loved it. I would love to go back. Really appreciate you watching the videos and taking the time to comment. Hope you’re having a nice weekend! ATB
So cool to see a fellow solo trekking . Your gear is a complete mystery to me , but so fun seeing new things . Luv your tent . Stay safe , be well , walk on .
It’s always fun to see the different kit that gets used in the different parts of the world. This kit varies quite a bit from the stuff I used back when I lived in the states. This tent in particular is fantastic in this environment but would be overkill where I used to camp back home. Where are you based? Appreciate you taking the time to comment!
@@GoingSoloOutdoors I live in Michigan , did a bit of packing here and Canada . Spent a month one year on isle royal , just spectacular views . I’ve wanted to hike the British isles but never could actualize any plan . My tent of choice was the eureka timberline , great little A frame . Well done wonderful to see you making the effort to cook such yummy looking food. Please take care you can get 4 seasons in one day in the mountains. If you are heading for Scotland take plenty of layers in a dry bag extra socks hats and gloves. Always let mountain rescue know where you are going. Safe journey where ever you go.❤

@@GoingSoloOutdoors Well done I am pleased to hear this.I am a Great Grandmother forgive my fussing please. I look forward to viewing more of your video’s
OK, I'm not a hiker or camper, and my idea of roughing it is no room service, but I enjoy watching these kinds of videos /adventures. It always amazes me how many people do not scrimp on what I would consider luxeries in these situations. Where I would expect some kind of reconstituted survival ration food, you made gyros along with the fresh sauce and veggies along with all the spices made from scratch. Thanks for a great video.
Thanks for watching! I really enjoy cooking so for these single night trips I like to make a proper meal. Also, gives me something to do when I’m stuck in the tent. Really appreciate you taking the time to comment. All the best!
A great video, with dramatic views and dramatic weather. What more can you ask for apart from a wonderful meal to finish the day's adventure. You are indeed a lucky chap. As always, thanks for your hard work and cannot wait for the next adventure.
I was kinda hoping for an evening outside the tent watching the sunset but I agree. Some of my most memorable trips have been when the weather isn’t the greatest! It’s pretty hard to beat the sound of rain falling on the tent 👍. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. ATB
Au contrarie, sir! I thought the wind, clouds, rain, hail… ok, not so much the hail, was the best part! Or a major contribution to the adventure. In reference to the hail, and if you haven’t already thought of it, might I suggest an inexpensive and nearly weightless pair of safety glasses. Can’t be damaging those peepers, you only get two of them babies! This is my first visit and video on your channel, and I enjoyed it immensely! What a meal you prepared! Were it I, and were I your age again, supper would likely be beef sticks and a Coors Light. Ok, I don’t drink anymore, but still… I tried to think of things I would do if it were me. A small book for after supper entertainment, a handmade leather journal for pre-bedtime thoughts, possibly a poem or song, and a small traveling watercolor set. A good pair of hiking footwear for traveling the Broken Ankle Rock Field mountains, yours looked pretty good. I really, really liked that tent! Might I ask where you got it? I was surprised that all you took fit into that pack! It appears a lot of thought and experience went into its’ preparation. And I would have planned for an extra day or two, if only to enjoy the sound of thunder and rain on my tent. Anyway, thanks for posting your video! For now, I will have to enjoy all you did vicariously!
Welcome to the channel. I have a pair of ski googles for winter camps in wind driven snow but I just don’t typically think to bring them on a July camp. In fact none of this weather was in the forecast aside from the wind. I always bring waterproofs because I know how unpredictable the conditions can be here but a pair of safety goggles definitely would have made things a bit more comfortable. Though, as you can see with a pack this size, space is limited. The tent I am using is the Hilleberg Nammatj 2. It’s an absolute beast of a tent for its size and weight. The perfect tent for these conditions. On most of these trips I would absolutely love to stay for another day but I have two young kids at home so I typically can only get out for single night trips. But I will take what I can get! Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. All the best!
I worked search and rescue on Mt Washing, NH, notorious for rapid and dramatic weather changes, also held the record for the highest surface wind speed recorded by a staffed weather station (recorded a wind speed of 231 miles per hour). Always bring the 10 essentials and pack so you can survive the night. Great video and beautiful mountains!
When I was much younger and living in NY I would travel to the White Mountains in NH for multiday trips. Beautiful area! I experienced some pretty wild weather there once as well and I wasn’t able to make it to one of the designated spots for camping on trail. My tent at the time wasn’t as adequate to deal with very strong winds but I was able to find some decent cover among the trees. Although, that was a pretty scary night hoping a tree wouldn’t fall on me 😅. Fortunately the wind speeds were nothing too crazy (231 mph🤯) just a bit too much for my tent. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. All the best.
Always crazy to see camping in such a treeless place. Makes me realize how much I take for granted almost always having some kind of source of wood for shelter or fire.
Yeah it definitely presents its own challenges camping in these mountains. Having grown up camping in the Appalachians it’s definitely a bit different camping in the UK mountains but I’ve grown to really love it. Fortunately where I actually live in England I am surrounded by forests so I can still easily get my tree fix when I want 👍 Thanks for taking the time to comment!
@@GoingSoloOutdoors One thing that amused me in Scotland near Fort William was a solitary tree that was at an angle of about 30 degrees to the horizontal, a testament to the power of the winds there
Immensely fun, (even comforting) video. Thanks for letting us tag-along. If you place small cuts in the leftover lemon peels, turning them inside out, rub them on skin: hands, back of hands, arms, feet, etc. they’re rich in antioxidants which detoxify and clean the skin to a great extent. Bacteria managed. And the ‘lemon bits’ just slough away. You’re a good tent-chef, your food is remarkably aesthetically pleasing, and you have beautiful hands.
Thank you! Really glad you enjoyed the video and the look of the food. I really love cooking so it’s definitely always a fun part of my night when out camping. Great tip with the lemons. Appreciate you taking the time to comment! ATB
I love these videos. I've walked up and down those hills and valleys since I was a kid. Some of the unprepared people we came across was insane. A few years ago and Chinese family of five went to check into hotel but was told it was too early, so they went out into the hills with all their luggage. Mountain Rescue was alerted when the hotel said they had gone out and not returned to check in. One lady was walking in high heels with a suitcase for goodness sakes. Another time, five Dutch guys in double denim got out a three door VW Golf and set off into the hills. Insane. With Cumbrian weather even if there is a heatwave, prepare for the worst as it can change in an instant and keep on changing through out the day.
Wow crazy stories. Definitely dangerous to underestimate the weather in any mountain range but particularly here in England. Thanks for watching. Appreciate you taking the time to comment!
Thanks, it was a fun trip! The video does seem to be doing well. Camping in less than ideal conditions always gets higher views for whatever reason! I still probably would have preferred a nice sunset or sunrise but it’s still pretty nice getting to listen to the rain on the tent 👍. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Hope you have a great weekend!
Thanks! Always fun to come to the Lakes but I will definitely never underestimate what the weather is capable of in places like this. Back when I was a kid my dad and I would hike Pikes Peak (4300 meters), in the Rockies. Every single time we would hike it, without fail the mountain would generate a storm at the end of the day. Just incredible how quickly conditions can change. Appreciate the comment! ATB
Eventually when I get a website up and running I plan to share each recipe from my camps on that space 👍. I normally just cook by taste, so I really need to make a better effort measuring the ingredients. Appreciate the comment! Hope you have a nice weekend

The Nammatj is definitely one of my favorite tents of all time. The extra space of the GT version is really nice. I bet it feels like a palace 👍. Really appreciate you taking the time to comment.
Enjoyed your video very much. Your food looked Delicious 😋. Something I would definitely enjoy making. This was the second video of yours that I have watched. It reminds me of Paul Messner's early videos in the hill district. The Trangia Triangle and of course that unpredictable hill district weather. It all worked out well, I love seeing these kind of wild camps. The views are spectacular up there. Now you have me hooked on your channel since I have followed Paul's adventures for many years now. Yes, my kind of hiking and camp.
Although I was kinda hoping for an evening with a nice sunset I still really enjoy how unpredictable places like the Lake District can be. It’s nice to be reminded that Mother Nature really doesn’t care what your plans are and you just have to adapt to what you are dealt. I’ve really enjoyed Paul’s videos as well over the years along with many other UA-camrs. I use to actually watch him when I lived in the states so it’s kind of nice to be able to travel to all these places now that I live in the UK! Really happy you are liking my videos! The support is really appreciated 🙏😀!
Really appreciate that feedback! I wasn’t sure if my stream of consciousness dialogue would get annoying sometimes to the viewer. I figure in the future when I’m maybe not able to do this anymore it would be kinda nice to look back and see what I was thinking on one of these trips 👍
I was extremely happy I swapped the tent. I think I would have been fine in the Enan because I found such a nice sheltered spot BUT I definitely would not have been as comfortable as I was in the Nammatj! 👍 You should try maying that dish. It was really good! ATB
Maybe eight years ago my daughter, one brother and one sister rented a home in Hawkshead, just west and South of Ambleside. It was a killer two week trip. We drive all over Cumbria, up into Scotland and down the coast. Beautiful towns, friendly people and great weather.
When I was a kid !y whole family put up a big green army tent by a lake.and stayed all summer until school started. it was a great way to spend the summer. I loved the sound of rain hitting the tent. Great video!

1st video of yours, iv just watched. I've never understood people eating dehydrated food @ least on the 1st day of camping. When you tucked into that yiros, i hit the subscribe button 😋 Nice to see you cozy after that weather🙋🏻♀️ 🇦🇺
It was a pretty nice way to end the day. If I’m going on a multiday trip I will typically bring dehydrated meals just because they are very convenient but on a single night trip it’s always great to have a nice meal 👍😀! Really appreciate you taking the time to comment and thanks for the support!!
Looks a really good tent, i often use a Wild Country Laser for low weight and pack size, but cooking and organising kit inside in bad weather isnt fun. Real value in being able to sit up properly for cooking and getting changed... Especially when on a sea kayak expedition. I am stunned by the quality of your cooking. I wish i had that level if enthusiasm for fine dining when camping!
Thanks! It is really nice having the extra space when you are stuck inside the tent with bad weather. You definitely pay a weight penalty though. I’ve always been a cooking enthusiast at home so it’s always a fun challenge to try and make the same meals using my camping kit. Appreciate you taking the time to comment! ATB
this is what I noticed the most. I have camped in many remote places here in Australia and my effort in meal prep and cooking is nowhere near this level! I'm looking at the stuff here for it's weight in the pack and thinking lemon, tomato, onion... but each to their own for sure and that is one of the beautiful simplicities about camping in the wild and food - each meal can become much more of a ritual, you seem to have more time out there without the pressures of civilisation. I couldn't camp anywhere without my Nanopresso for a proper shot of espresso and steamed milk, we all have our vices😁
How fun! You were well prepared and comfortable. Reminds me of my backpacking days, though your gear is much more sophisticated than mine was. Thanks for bringing us along!
😀👍 This gear has served me well. It’s always nice to have that little bit of extra space in the tent when the weather is less than ideal. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
just found your channel on a recc from yt, and i already love it. you've got such a wonderful vibe, and gods that gyro looks incredible. im gonna try that myself at some point. im not much of a backpacker, more of a motorcycle camper, but this was delightful to watch, as its definitely not always sunshine and nice weather, and its great to see how you can make a great trip out of the hail and rain. i cant wait to make my way thru your video list!
Welcome to the channel! I’ve watched a few motorcycle camps on UA-cam. Camping of any kind is a blast. You’re absolutely right. You never know what you’re going to get with the weather so you just gotta make the best of it. The terrible weather can be fun at times but it really makes you appreciate those calm nights at camp with a beautiful sunrise or sunset. Really appreciate the support. Hope you have a nice weekend! ATB
I did some determined searching for a wild camping channel I hadn`t seen yet, and I definitely lucked out! No `walking back for the camera` shots, no teeth brushing demonstration (they kill it for me). I basically loved your style, commentary, camera work, everything really. You know your stuff and that`s a fact. I knew that when you changed tents at the forecast, then confirmed when I saw the Delta peg on your main guy rope. The Nammatj is heavy-ish, but for one or two nights, who cares. The amazing meal even has me considering trying a change from my usual boil in the bag. I have to give you a solid 10/10, and after 45 years on the hills, I am PICKY ;)
Really appreciate the positive review! Glad you found my channel. I agree, the Nammatj is as heavy as I’d like to go for a solo trip but I definitely find it worth the weight for a night or two. Especially when the weather isn’t the best and I’m stuck in the tent for a while. I usually try to offset the weight by bringing a lighter cooking setup. The delta pegs are great! I didn’t actually discover them until I moved to England. A boil in the bag meal is definitely much lighter and more convenient but I really enjoy cooking. It gives me something to do at camp. The reward when it’s finished is always nice. Really appreciate you taking the time to comment. Hope you have a nice weekend! ATB
🤣👍 I purposely left the camera rolling quite a bit longer in my next video for those people who like listening to that sort of thing. Appreciate the comment!
Fantastic video brother, real ( also here usual in the mountains of the Basque Country ) and that shows very well how fast the weather changes and its dangers but as the difference is in the experience and knowledge !!!! 👏👏👏👏👌
This made me think of a trip 2 friends from high school and I made in 1970 living in California. We got to the campsite set up the tent and a big storm rolled in. We were soaked the tent was leaking bad after about a hour of rain. We decided to head to a motel an hour away. I was never so wet in my life with clothes on lol. It would have not been bad but the rain was so cold. So sorry it was bad weather I know the feeling.
Sounds like a memorable trip. I’ve kinda gotten use to the possibility of having bad weather while camping here in the UK. Waterproofs are a must though. It was quite comfortable in the tent but I would have preferred a nicer evening sitting outside the tent watching the sunset. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment! ATB
I have a Nammatj 3 GT. Bought it around 1996. Have had an extra opposite door build in and a fully covering groundsheet. I've been in all kinds off rough environments and heavy terrain! It was a lot of money (especially with the extra door and groundsheet done by Hilleberg themselves), but it was worth every penny! I never used the extra guyropes! Just the pegs! One time even next to a landingstrip on a military base in Germany with F16's starting off from that point (I didn't know they used that strip, since we were doing maintenance there after exercises) Only after the first plane! Must admit, all the ventilation and doors were opened to dry, so probably that prevented the tent from being blown away, but still... I've been in Scandinavia, among other places, around Galhöpping, In the British Lakedistrict, Luxembourg, Austria, Germany, Spain and France. Also used it on military exercises, as an alternative sleeping place from the armed vehicle I was with. Top tents!
Great story! It is always really nice to hear how people have used these tents over the years. It definitely goes to show how Hilleberg has built such a fantastic reputation. They just make incredible tents that last! Thank you for sharing and taking the time to comment! ATB
Thank you. I try to capture the entire camp to preserve the memory the best I can 👍. Despite the weather this was a really enjoyable camp. Thanks for taking the time to comment!
The phrase: "silence is golden", holds many lessons for many you-tubers. As does the phrase: "Never state the obvious". Another phrase that springs to mind is "Show, don't tell."
Enjoyed this very much. I am 70 and unable to walk very far. I do have an off Grid cabin so that is nice. Wish I would have done this when I was young and happy for you that you are. Thanks for taking me along.
I feel very fortunate that we live in a place where I can come to hike and camp in such an incredible landscape. We currently live in the English countryside so it’s a very calm lifestyle. But I would love to have an off grid cabin one day. A place where I could bring the kids to completely disconnect from everything. I really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. All the best!
In the U.S. cheap, hooded rain ponchos are easy to find. They come folded into small light weight packets. We usually bring a few extra on our trips to hand out to the unprepared, lol. Great vid! 😃
👍 That’s nice of you! I have a couple I’ve picked up at REI over the years that I no longer use. I just leave them in the car now. But now that we live in the UK, and don’t travel anywhere without a rain jacket 😂. Appreciate the comment! ATB
A great watch. Bad weather camps are always the most memorable. Loving the Nammatj and I think I'm going to have to try and sell some gear to fund one!
Definitely the most memorable! The Nammatj is an absolute joy to use. Incredibly strong, fantastic vents and an absolute palace for one! I was pleasantly surprised I could actually fit it in my 45L pack on this trip! Thanks for watching man! Hope you’re having a good weekend so far. 👍
Yeah definitely not recommended!! You don’t have to worry too much about the cooking oil as it doesn’t really get to a high enough temperature to damage anything or combust, but the bioethanol is extremely dangerous. The trangia triangle is pretty stable and fortunately I only really needed to cook the meat for 3 to 4 minutes so the stove wasn’t on that long. Thanks for watching and I appreciate you taking the time to comment! All the best
Thanks! I actually never use tarps over my tent, especially when it’s windy. Most of my tents have a decent enough sized vestibule. I really enjoy these single pitch tents. Being able to put up the ground sheet, inner and outer tents up all at once is amazing when the weather isn’t the best. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! All the best

@@GoingSoloOutdoors Nope. You still have to go out into the elements and urinate/deficate. That is a major inconvenience to say the least.
ATB

I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.)
to keep claiming that there is no GOD and we aint created directly from the dust of the earth, we soon run out logic, regardless to we place “evolution” in our claims or not and our dead, whats happening to them as they sleep in their graves? - they decay away, becoming the dust form which they were taken, if it ain`t so then we are simply reality deniers.

The microphone wind noise isn't a problem for me. It only adds to the true atmosphere of the scenes being portrayed and takes nothing away. Enormously better than any music you could use instead.

JMO.

JMO.

Greeting from Sweden!😊
living in AUS you have no idea how envious I am of the weather conditions you have. Awesome vids, keep it up.
Thank you! The weather is very different than what I experienced living in the North East US but I’ve really grown to love the harsh conditions here. I’ve been to Australia long ago. I loved it. I would love to go back. Really appreciate you watching the videos and taking the time to comment. Hope you’re having a nice weekend! ATB
Try Tassie.
What part of Australia? Are your seasons; hot and dry, hot and dry, hot and dry, and hot and a little less dry? 😂
I currently have a Kelty , but it’s much to heavy to pack with .
I could ramble on about my backing adventures from hours , bears , being charged by moose , having my tent being blown away in a storm , with me and gear inside ! But I’ll spare you .
Anyway , nice to vicariously walk a little , thanks for sharing this . Best to ya .

Well done wonderful to see you making the effort to cook such yummy looking food. Please take care you can get 4 seasons in one day in the mountains. If you are heading for Scotland take plenty of layers in a dry bag extra socks hats and gloves. Always let mountain rescue know where you are going. Safe journey where ever you go.❤
Extra clothing, dry bags, etc … pretty much come with me on every camp here in the UK 👍. I also have a Garmin InReach satellite communicator with me. Appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment!
@@GoingSoloOutdoors Well done I am pleased to hear this.I am a Great Grandmother forgive my fussing please. I look forward to viewing more of your video’s
That bird is saying, "You've got nothing on me." And she's right.
😆👍💯
Thank you for your videos. I relax when I’m watching your videos
That is good to hear. Thank you for watching them!
Dude!!! What a wonderful looking meal!
Thanks! It was really tasty!
Thanks! When you get a little bit of everything on a trip like this it definitely makes it much more memorable! Appreciate the comment 👍 ATB
Man what a fun looking trip! Some of the best times I've had were in rain/snow/hail with the buds out on the backpacking trails.
Ok, I don’t drink anymore, but still…
I tried to think of things I would do if it were me.
Where? New Hampshire? That's some crazy winds.
Absolutely amazing! Bless your heart, you survived beautifully! Awesome video!
Thanks for watching! Although the weather might not have been the best it was still a really fun camp! Appreciate you taking the time to comment 😀👍
@@GoingSoloOutdoors One thing that amused me in Scotland near Fort William was a solitary tree that was at an angle of about 30 degrees to the horizontal, a testament to the power of the winds there
Can not a tree planting program be set up there? Would love to see those rolling hills and mountains come to life!
The video is great in general, but the meal is amazingly over the top! You are quite the cook.
Thanks! It’s actually a pretty simple dish just lots of chopping and mixing 👍. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment!
ATB
Heard the word "tarn" in this video more than I have in my whole life.
😅 sorry ?
You, sir, are living my dream! Thank you so much for posting this and sharing your adventure! Well done!
I definitely feel very fortunate to have access to such beautiful places. Really appreciate the comment! All the best 👍
Well done been up there walking but never camping 😊
Well this video certainly appears to be taking off for you, congrats! It looked like a fun adventure.
@@GoingSoloOutdoorsI guess people just like watching stupid people doing stupid things 🙄
Great vid, glad that you showed just how changeable the weather can be in the hills, food looked amazing as well
ATB
just WOW,!!! What an adventure, and an incredible meal. PLease make a cooking book
Eventually when I get a website up and running I plan to share each recipe from my camps on that space 👍. I normally just cook by taste, so I really need to make a better effort measuring the ingredients. Appreciate the comment! Hope you have a nice weekend
Good old British Weather huh. Even the weather forecasters can't keep up! Lol. Great narration and videography You got me hooked! Liked and Subscribed
Yeah never a dull moment here. It really does feel like things can change in a second. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I really appreciate the support!
what a trip! that gyro was perfect and the more feta the better for me anyway. thanks for another great one.
Haha I actually ate the rest of the feta that I brought with with … soooo good! Appreciate you taking the time to comment!
Thank you for sharing a wonderful adventure.
Thank you for watching! Have a great weekend 👍
Those tents are awesome! I've got the namaj with the extra little room. Absolutely awesome in conditions like that for cooking and drying gear
The Nammatj is definitely one of my favorite tents of all time. The extra space of the GT version is really nice. I bet it feels like a palace 👍. Really appreciate you taking the time to comment.
Looks like a green at the end of one of Shevis Irons' fairways.
👍 A nice spot to find and pitch the tent
Beautiful scenery, relaxing video, and a great hat! Thanks for your content:)
Thanks for watching! It’s such a beautiful part of the country!
You are one dedicated videographer of the adventure… I will say that. I appreciated your willingness to think out loud in real time.
Really appreciate that feedback! I wasn’t sure if my stream of consciousness dialogue would get annoying sometimes to the viewer. I figure in the future when I’m maybe not able to do this anymore it would be kinda nice to look back and see what I was thinking on one of these trips 👍
WOW!! Dinner for a king! Loved to see the ingredients! Looks delicious!
Thanks! Always nice to eat well when stuck inside the tent. Appreciate you taking the time to comment 👍
That meal only looks a thousand times better than a dehydrated backpacker meal 😋
Thanks! I definitely prefer to just make my meal for these single night camps.
Such a good job you you swapped your tent out!
Yet again, top marks for your cooking efforts 👌🏼
I was extremely happy I swapped the tent. I think I would have been fine in the Enan because I found such a nice sheltered spot BUT I definitely would not have been as comfortable as I was in the Nammatj! 👍 You should try maying that dish. It was really good! ATB
@@GoingSoloOutdoors i think I’m going to have to try it 😍
Maybe eight years ago my daughter, one brother and one sister rented a home in Hawkshead, just west and South of Ambleside. It was a killer two week trip. We drive all over Cumbria, up into Scotland and down the coast. Beautiful towns, friendly people and great weather.
Sounds like a great trip. It’s such a beautiful part of the country! Thanks for taking the time to share 👍. ATB
😅😅😊
So inspiring. Love the area and your cooking demo. Outstanding!
Thanks! Appreciate you watching!
When I was a kid !y whole family put up a big green army tent by a lake.and stayed all summer until school started. it was a great way to spend the summer. I loved the sound of rain hitting the tent.
Great video!
Wow that does sound like a pretty great way to spend the summer 👍. Rain on a tent is a very relaxing sound! Thanks for sharing and taking the time to comment! ATB
@@Chris-wq3pe 💯👍 very true
Loved the video and the gyro looked amazing. Great work!
Thanks! I was definitely a memorable camp. Hope you’re having a nice weekend! ATB
I don’t eat that well at home! 😂. Amazing amount of effort preparing that lovely food!😊
😄 Thanks! It’s always a fun challenge to try and making things I make at home while out on a camp. Appreciate you taking the time to comment 👍
Love rain and thunderstorms! Looks very cozy in that tent!
It’s a very cozy tent when it’s raining outside. Nice to have the extra space compared to the one man tents I bring normally 👍
just found your channel on a recc from yt, and i already love it.
you've got such a wonderful vibe, and gods that gyro looks incredible. im gonna try that myself at some point.
im not much of a backpacker, more of a motorcycle camper, but this was delightful to watch, as its definitely not always sunshine and nice weather, and its great to see how you can make a great trip out of the hail and rain.
i cant wait to make my way thru your video list!
ATB
love watching these videos from home in my bed
Thank you for revealing the beauty of the Lake Region to an American that has roots in the region.
It’s a stunning place! Appreciate you watching!
Imagine that thunder with rain.
Thanks buddy! Always pays to respect Mother Nature and be prepared 👍
ATB
The beat time of my outdoor life: Nights in an akto, making food. Relaxing and waiting for better weather.
It’s a good feeling being comfortable in your tent while there is a bit of weather outside. Really appreciate you watching.

The phrase: "silence is golden", holds many lessons for many you-tubers. As does the phrase: "Never state the obvious". Another phrase that springs to mind is "Show, don't tell."
Appreciate the feedback 👍
SAM THE COOKING GUY. 👍❤️❤️❤️ YEAH ! I'VE SEEN HIS COOKING 👍❤️
😀 He makes some great stuff 👍
ATB
woah those mountains are amazing!

Had that been my evening meal in my Hilleberg, the burning cooking oil and alcohol mix would have consumed the tent. And me.
Bravo.
The Food Scenes were off the charts! (Outstanding)
Phenomenal video.
Thanks for sharing.
🙏😀This was a really tasty meal! Really appreciate the multiple comments.
The rock protection during the initial hailstorm was so satisfying!😊
I was very lucky to find that spot. It was like a rock throne. Comfortable and well protected 👍
Interesting in all that rain you had no need for a tarp over the tent. Great tent and great camp. I enjoyed!
