    Hi Murray,
Lovely video great shots. On the age thing im 70 now and did this walk about 25 uears ago with my brother. With no issues. BUT as you get older confidence does wain. Partly because of physical limitations. I.e. balance is the first issue, balance does deteriorate as you get older, and definately effects your confidence. You do feel unsteady as this happens. I have noticed this creaping up on me as i get older. This gives me some trepidation I do still get out though as i have been for 45 years, but i choose my challenges very carefully.
Hope that gives you an idea of how physical issues related to age effect confidence.
    John M

I'm also 70 and had hip joint replacement surgery done last March. In the years leading up to the surgery my balance and mobility were becoming more and more compromised and even walking on a flat road was painful. Six months on I'm pain free, thank God, and I've been working hard to get my fitness back to where it was. I'm feeling great now, as far as cardio fitness goes, but my balance hasn't come back fully and I'm starting to think it never will. But it's been fantastic getting out and about in the beautiful Highlands of Scotland and the fells of England this summer, after years being a semi cripple. I'm just counting my blessings.
To all you young lads and lasses who might happen to read this, make the most of your youth while you have it. To you, John M, all the best my friend, and I hope you are enjoying your walking and scrambling as much as I am.

Couldn’t agree more. I’m 67 now, still pretty fit, but realise I’m not as fit and agile or sure footed as I used to be. I’ve had to turn back on a couple of Skye Munros last 18 months, notably the Bad Step on Am Bhasteir this year, whereas 20 years ago I hopped down it no problem. Think it was more mental than physical but it’s the combination that puts the doubt in your mind. I did Liathach no problem this year and loved it, there’s always an easier alternative if you don’t fancy the direct scramble, but only in good conditions. It’s not a place for walkers in bad weather or winter. I did it in winter 20 odd years ago with a guide, the late Martin Moran, full on winter mountaineering. Great video thank you Murray, superb camera work!

One of Scotland's finest mountains. Loved your camping spot. Even without the coffee that must have been a fantastic trip.
Regarding fear I think experience is a big thing. Initial fears soon go as you realise what you are actually capable of doing.

Marvellous adventure ... I wouldn't even have the legs to get to your campsite. I take it you are no somnambulist ...
Just on geology, the Torridon giants are made of the same stuff (Torridonian sandstone, 1000-720 million years old) as Suilven. The underlying gneiss (easily seen around the base of Suilven and in Assynt, also from Ben Shieldaig northwards) is around 3 times as old! I think its oldest at Scourie.

One of your best Murray. You really should be getting a Percentage from the Scottish Tourist Board. I probably wouldn't ever dare to do what you did on that traverse, but I did get inspiration from you to pose on the famous buttress on Stac Pollaidh. Keep up the good work 👍 ps. Regarding fear, I do think that I consider the risks, and not just regarding hiking, much more aged 50+ than I ever did in my 20's. Back then the riskier the better!

Drone footage was out of this world. Bit worried when I saw you on the edge of the pinacle towards the summit but really was worth it for the views. Take care and look forward to your next video.

Wow, Murray. You've outdone yourself on this one. Lost for words actually. It will need a few viewings to take it all in (second one this evening with family). About COFFEE. Years ago, I heard Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, say she chewed a coffee bean after a meal (to freshen the mouth). Maybe if you forget the gas again...

I would travel there for no other reason than to camp on that very spot Murray.... In fact... I will... What an incredible pitch.. The age/fear thing...? Well, for me, it's not lack of confidence but getting weaker.. I'd hate to run out of gas... I take much longer to do height and distance combined these days.. I get there... But it takes a little longer... Thank you so much for sharing that mountain adventure... If I'm lucky - I'll try get there this Autumn 🤜🤛

Wow just wow Murray. You’ve been on form lately with your camp 4 on Ben Lomond (like to think I helped influence Gerry to do that after our chat on Narnain), your journey to the last Glacier in the Cairngorms and now this. My experience of Liathach was a wet traverse of the bypass path which was the highlight for me as it was pretty much a day of zero visibility up high (probably just as well) 😁

No words Murray, that camp site, nothing anywhere can be a better campsite than that. That view, simply off the scale. Then the pinnacles, heart in mouth time, I think we do question our mortality the older we get. But again the views, just stunning. Thank you for an amazing video Murray. Take care and ATB

Beautiful video, great camera work and perfect weather too. Takes me back to my Liathach traverse (east to west) over 30 years ago. We went over the pinnacles - easier than I expected then, but I think that you do get more fearful as you get older. Parental responsibility plays a part, I’m sure.

Brilliant video Murray, one of your best ever! I can relate to all of that, especially forgetting the gas, which I did for the first time last year! I used to be super fit in my 40s and 50s, thinking nothing of 25 mile multiple Munro days. Then a few health scares in my early 60s, (I'm 67 now) left me suddenly feeling old, mainly generally knackered and not as well balanced as I was used to. Suddenly steep pulls uphill became much harder, and a touch of vertigo started to make me nervous near big drops. I have 22 year old twins, and they are both a lot fitter than me now, but I try to keep up with them and sometimes "experience" wins the day!
I think my really big hill days are behind me now, but I'll keep having a go every now and again, and continue to climb vicariously through your wonderful videos :)

I’m a nervous wreck just watching the video. Do you not have any worries about sleepwalking or getting blown off your airy perch ? I know I couldn’t sleep in that situation.I did Liathach in 1971 and (thankfully ) have no recall of it. Must appear to be a scaredy cat but I’ve managed to complete all the Munro’s though I’ve needed help on some. I agree with your thought about fear as you get older.

Murray!! What have you just done 😂😳! Absolutely brilliant! U just look hyped haha I'd be! Brilliant pitch that. One I'm certainly gonna copy one day when I will be able to. Was just up the Loch Coire Mhic Fhearchair today Beinn Eighe. Very shocked I managed the hike there and back. Didn't realise my achillis had progressed that much tbh. Had no throbbing pain. Only things were my knees struggled a fair bit, but to be expected. Shit bugger! No coffee, no gas. That's the worse mistake 😂😂😢 hate that when it happens. That's the best part of the Wildcamp. Man. Forget being grumpy cuz it's morning 😂
I want to go up there again. The bivvy last time on the flat platou was incredible, but I didn't do the pinacles I took the bypass. Good to see now that they were not too bad to go over. That ridge you were on for the photo though. Hmm not sure about it 😅 it's just the thaught of whta if? That is scary, not doing it. Today during my walk I was looking at it and it's much longer than you think to hike a cross it 😂
Be good to get a camp done on BEINN Eighe, cuz I've camped beinn alligin and bivvied Liatiach. Mind not camped liatach 😂 now needs stealing. That spot.
Thanks once again. This was fantastic video🙏 right under the mountain tonight 😂 so tempted. Kills me 😂 but I can't, for obviose reasons. Killer haha. Had to choose to watch this video when I'm up here didn't I 😂😂

Absolutely superb Murray. As a 70 year old now. I have found that the fear factor came in on my 60s and know I would find it hard to cope on the Skye ridge Aonach Eagagh or indeed Liathach. In my fourties’ I had seemed ok with these ridges. I did use the by pass path on the mountain but thought it was exposed but wonder how I would feel now. I was brought up watching Tom Weir, Jimmy MacGregor, Muriel Gray and Cameron McNeish on various outdoor shows but nothing can compare with the footage you put out and all on your own. So well done. Must admit though I loved the Munro show with Muriel it was funny but informative and coincided with my Munro journey. Anyhow look forward to your next adventure.

A quick technical question: you seem to be able to take drone shots when you are involved in doing something else, is the drone hands-free programmable?
    Cheers ... Peter

Wow those opening shots were incredible, there are just not the right words for the rest of the video, Murray. Invoked such a great feeling, and a real joy to watch. Epic drone work.
I would love the confidence (along with the knowledge and experience) to try that location.
    Just wonderful.
    Cheers,

Amazing place to camp 😊 as for fear, I'm 60 now, and I don't think I'm any more scared or worried as 40 years ago. But what I have found is I'm a lot slower, I seem to take more time plotting a route. Just wonder if you find that

Absolutely brilliant place. Done it a few times & will never tire of it. I'm 68 and find I'm pushing my scrambling to higher levels all the time.UA-cam vids are invaluable in checking routes & difficulty beforehand. Have generally found the going easier than the impression given in vids, but i always chose the finest days & on challenging bits, focus 100% on what's immediately ahead. I find this keeps the nerves away.😊 Only look down when you’ve completed or are on a secure perch. Never give in to age. Enjoy the freedom & experience that growing old brings & make the best of your health & vitaiity, whilst you still have it.
Thanks for taking me on an armchair tour of one of the best outings Scotland has to offer, Murray😊 I'll be back there as soon as i can......

Scenery is so stunning, you capture it so beautifully. Always so relaxing and exciting to watch your videos, truly a blessing you share this footage. Thank you! I was in Scotland this summer and climbed some easier ones, Lochnagar maybe the highlight. Hope to do this one some day, but FEAR is definitely an issue. I'm thinking maybe a rock climbing wall hobby might prepare me for the scrambles.

Amazing, I don't understand how you and people like you are able to take the heights in your stride, made me feel slightly odd just watching the film, lol. The views are other worldly, thanks for sharing this!

A question on filming with your drone. Do you fly on waypoints, or are you just doing it free hand?

Fantastic video as ever, Murray. Such an interesting question about fear. I’ve not done Liathach and I don’t know what I’ll end up doing - neither prospect pleases! Your films are always so beautifully judged and this is one of your best. Thanks for sharing. Best wishes Murdo

@Scotland's Mountains Great video Murray. Five year's back had a fantastic day out on Liathach..... climbed and walked the FULL ridge.... round the back, up the steep face onto Meall Dearg, over the Norther Pinnacles, over the two munros and the Am Farsarinen pinnacles, and onto the final top, and off down the rough face..... to the main track. A perfect circuit on a perfect day in late September. The scariest part was the face on the east end of Meall Dearg.... very steep heather, and loose blocks, with the odd bit of good rock... The Northern Pinnacles were fine after that.... lol...

Your finest video yet Murray. And that wild camping spot - WOW. Needs to be in Visit Scotland’s brochure. Reminds me that I need to get back up Liathach. Not been up there for 30 years. Made a winter attempt a couple of years ago but in the winter it’s a scary proposition. Thanks for sharing the best Scottish mountain videos on UA-cam. 👏👏👏

Brilliant video Murray. Went up the highest Munro more than thirty years back but thought better of following the ridge. Now I wish we'd pressed-on. Such is life. What an experience you had though: sensational!

Murry, fabulous, fabulous, fabulous. The night sky, was absolutely breathtaking. When you see the stars, it makes us so insignificant. However, the fear....I've walked many a ridge, many a hill in Scotland. Now I even have to look away on some videos where there is exposure ...I can't even stand on a castle battlements and look over. Started probably 10 years ago and has got progressively worse. I'm coming on to 73 and still hike, camp, a bit of cycling (not so much since the lockdown, as lost a lot of fitness then) so I avoid the exposure and enjoy the glens, valleys and forest walks.
As always, a super video, not full of bravado.. thankfully. Thoughtful, inspiring, so thanks again for the time, effort in getting out there, producing, editing, and putting these videos out there. Keep safe and looking forward to the next adventure.

At last Murray! This was arguably your best ever video. I've been waiting for you to visit the finest mountain in the UK ever since I first subscribed to your channel several years ago. The wait was worth it though - what a video, what a pitch! Glad you did both the pinnacles and bypass path. You made it look a lot easier than I'm sure it is, that's the value of experience and fitness.

Geez the wee demons at the beginning, I'm surprised they're still this bad in the latter part of September? At 4:42, when you said that's where you were going to pitch your tent, I just stared in wonderment. I'd rather be there, wild camping, than any fancy five star hotel. The stars at 10:10, along with the aurora - I've told you before that often when I look at photography or videography that I "hear" music, and my mind automatically attributes a song to what I'm seeing. Enthralled by the majestic beauty of the sky and stars, I "heard" Fordlandia by Johann Johannsson. I had to find the UA-cam video and it's at 8:05 where the music starts building. There are no adequate adjectives to describe that sky and I had tears in my eyes. Showed my husband and he said "Wow!" 10:42, that morning sky, just lovely. Whaaat? You forgot your gas cannister for your coffee? The horror! You don't even want to talk to me until I've had my coffee in the morning. 😂 All of the views, my gosh, there's too many 12:25, 13:52, 16:52, 17:17, 17:58, 22:31, my comment could just be a string of timestamps. David and I are coming to Scotland in May of 2025 and are already planning ahead, and Torridon looks like one of the places we'd love to go to. The bypass path, incredible. I think regarding the fear, the key may just be taking things one step at a time, truly no pun intended. If you're still feeling fear, maybe take some deep breaths and steady and settle yourself before continuing. But, if you find it to be overwhelming, that may be a sign that maybe at this visit it's not something you want to attempt. Just my take. A mind boggling vid Murray, I just cannot thank you enough for all the drone footage and all of your hard work that enables us to see this scenery! 👋

Watched later than usual. Absolutely marvellous in every way, but I was biting my nails as you tackled the ridge and those pinnacles. Envy you the view of the stars. Here in Norwich it’s lucky if you can see one or two on a clear night. Light pollution is a menace!
Thanks for a fabulous video. Will need to enjoy this several times.

Magic hill and great video Murray. As for age, the main fear I've got(I'm mid 40s)is of injury and not being able for the hills. Did my hamstring in May and 4 months on, still nowhere near. Very frustrating. There's so many great low level walks, that they can become a target, once the hills slip beyond reach.

I think that was your best yet, just beautiful, stunning, awesome, my heart was pumping all the through, from your campsite, to the pinnacles, and the bypass, and the fantastic Scottish Highlands, no way you can beat that one, even the weather was good for you.
Thanks for sharing my friend, and stay safe on the hills. 😎

_What a superb and truly amazing video._ It features some of the best footage of Liathach I have ever seen -- especially the parts shot by the drone. Thanks for posting!
We climbed this magnificent mountain (and traversed the pinnacles!) back in 1996, 1997, 2001, 2002, 2003 and then finally in 2008, so this was a great reminder!
