Thanks for your support, Ian. It's been a busy couple weeks since we launched Max Mustard on PlayStation! The PlayStation VR2 player community has been incredibly supportive of Max Mustard and we're really proud of the upgrades we've put into the PSVR2 port. It's a brilliant headset and we're glad to see so many more players enjoy Max Mustard because of it.
Would love to play it on PC. Bought the PSVR2 for pc, been really enjoying it with the heavy vr back catalogue on pcvr. Dont have a ps5. I refuse to buy sony exclusive products anymore, burned with vita, psvr1, ps4 and ps5 support was seriously lacking, backwards compatibility poor, compared to ps3.
@@Jaggith Well that's good timing, because we just launched it yesterday on PC! The PSVR2 and SteamVR versions are pretty much on par, so either way you go, you'll have a great experience.
Are you planning on releasing a physical copy of Max Mustard? Perp games seems to be publishing 90% of the PSVR2 physical copies (they publish physicals for indies like Vertigo 2 and even for major properties like Star Wars: Tales from Galaxy's Edge). Maybe you can get a physical copy of Max Mustard published with Perp? If not, maybe Maximum entertainment or PM Studios (Maximum published the two Walking Dead Saints and Sinners VR games and the upcoming Behemoth and PM studios published Captain Toonhead) or even Limited Run games (they published Thumper on PSVR2 and C-Smash VRS) or Strictly Limited games (who published the PS5 / PSVR2 version of Last Labyrinth). A physical copy of Max Mustard, whether it's a major wide release or a limited special edition release, would be pretty cool.
As a Vita owner there was a definite moment early on, after Killzone I think, they just proudly announced they were done with it. Imagine if Nintendo dropped their handhelds in a couple years time. (Yes, it lived a lot longer because it’s awesome but it is a similar situation, I suspect the psvr2 does fine regardless)
I get the arguments against Sony’s support for PSVR2 as far as their own games go, but I don’t think it’s a great example to point to say they aren’t supporting the platform BASED ON one example of a game you like. I love Max Mustard, too, but there are blog posts and social media ads for Behemoth, Metro Awakening and Alien: Rouge Incursion, the three biggest games slated for the platform this year. The Astrobot complaints hold much more water than hinging it all on whether they promoted a smaller profile title. Again, no knock against Max Mustard’s quality.
Sony has not abandoned PSVR2, there's clear signs of that. But they are doing almost the absolute minimum effort to support it. GIVE US A NEW ASTRO BOT GIVE US THE OLD ASTRO BOT, WIPEOUT & CO. Simple rereleases of PSVR1 hits is a no brainer with low cost. Sony marketing and comms are just an embarrasment! I understand you dont want to throw millions to advertizing but please TALK about you products more and don't seem like you're ashamed of PSVR2.
I agree. Posting new titles on their social media or website isnt going to cost them much. PSVR owners are pretty good at learning about new titles. It’s still a niche market so you need to do a bit of searching yourself.
I thought about getting a PSVR 2 because I bought the PSVR but after careful consideration I ended up buying the Meta Quest 3. Couldn't be happier with my choice I absolutely love it.
Having bought both psvr 2 is way better. If you don’t got a pc if you do have a pc get a quest 3 but besides that I think psvr 2 clears quest 3 the graphics are breath taking and sure there aren’t that many first party games there are still so many 3rd party games that are fantastic and some that are coming out like metro and behemoth and all of which will be a better experience on the psvr2 than the quest 3. The only reason I could think about getting a quest 3 over psvr 2 is meta seems like they care about vr and are investing a lot into vr rather than what Sony is doing
You make some good points but 'last legs' is just not true. A load of brilliant 3rd party games coming before the end of the year and despite the lack of marketing from Sony for Max Mustard the dev tweeted that it sold more on PSVR2 than Quest so the player base is definitely there even if Sony's marketing department needs a big slap!
It didn't sell more than Quest. Read the post on X again. They only compared sales in the LAUNCH WINDOW, not overall sales, because Max Mustard sold an absolute bucket load of copies in the recent Meta Quest sale. Not sure the player base is "definitely there" either as PSVR2 has only 2 million users, which is only a tenth of Quest 2 users (so not including Quest Pro, Quest 3 or Quest 3s). If the player base was "definitely there" Sony would have made Astrobot a hybrid VR game instead of no VR at all, and Sony wouldn't be flogging PSVR2 headsets to PC owners.
@@acurisur ok I don't use X, saw it on Reddit but the dev was pretty ecstatic and the 2 million headset number was from a good while back wasn't it? Do we have a recent tally after the price cut?
@@stuartmurton7319 The 2 million user base number was a recent tally, not a while ago, so it includes the price cut sales. The initial user base according to Sony was only 600k. While that might seem like quite a jump, it took the sales cut, PSVR2 on PC and another 20 months of sales to get that extra 1.4M sales.
@@stuartmurton7319 Also the PSVR2 is still almost full price where I am in the UK, on Amazon it's £487 with no game. It now has very stiff competition with the recent launch of Quest 3S, which is only £289 on Amazon and comes bundled with Batman Arkham Shadow, which is an absolutely massive IP to bundle with a VR headset.
I'd rather just use my Quest 3 on a PC, or better yet, a PSVR2 'revision'(Using Pancake lenses + an LCD 'Full array local dimming' SDR display(s) ) + a PS5 Pro, if that ever were to come to fruition. The latter would be the ultimate consumer combo. Since PC VR has too many friction points. :P As is, i can't stand my PSVR2 anymore. Both RE Village VR & RE4 Remake VR were mostly spectacular, but once you experience pancake lenses with Q3, it's totally rough back to fresnel with PSVR2. Every single PSVR2 game looks as if there's a soft veil masking the image, and then you have to deal with that nasty immersion breaking oled motion persistence blur, god rays, it's uncomfortable, the tiny sweet spot, and controller rings rubbing against the side of your hands. If the next Resident Evil game coming out doesn't get a VR mode for PSVR2, than that's it. It's over, as far as legit AAA 3rd party exclusive VR games go. PC VR and 'stand alone' Q3 are already getting Alien: Rogue Incursion, Metro Awakening(Neither of which are in the same league as the two RE VR games) and Subside is already out. What exactly is PSVR2 getting that Q3 & PC VR aren't?
If Playstation's reason for the lack of PSVR2 marketing is that "it has an extremely low player base", Well that's their own fault for pricing it at $500 and requiring you to have already bought the $500 PS5. It's an absurd upfront cost for what can be considered a peripheral.
I was surprised they went back to full price after practically giving them away for 350. That felt like a misfire to end the promo. It was selling well at that point.
@@nickkowal619 in the US at least. First it was 450 when I bought it and much to my amazement they turned around a month later, dropped it to 350. It was all major retailers. Sold out on Amazon if I recall.
I usually disagree with vids like this cos its mostly rage bait. But i cant disagree here. The psvr 2 had every chance to be the best headset on the market but they just arent doing what they need to with it. I love the headset and always will. But give us more sony
@DavideDavini why would it sell without support, quest get exclusives like ac nexus and batman and rub it in everyone's faces so everyone can see it, sony give us games that yes we as pre existing owners appreciate but don't market it at all so we'll be the only people to see them, I get what you mean, but it's a 2 way street
@@DavideDavini My guess is that they alienated a lot of their potential target audience when they announced that PSVR1 games are not compatible without the dev updating. Bear in mind that PS5 can play PS4 games natively so why not PSVR1 games? That would have sent alarm bells ringing for a lot of people. I think the other thing that killed it was deciding to use OLED panels with Fresnel lenses when it really needed better lenses like ZEISS Optical Inserts, which the Apple Vision Pro uses with it's OLED panels. Or pancake lenses ( same as Quest 3) which is what the Pimax Crystal Super uses with it's micro OLED displays. By pairing OLED panels with Fresnel lenses Sony effectively gimped what you see, as Fresnel suffers from screen door effect and distortion at the edges of the lense.
Disappointed we are not getting more hybrid games like Sony promised. But still it’s a great time to be a Psvr2 user right now with games like Into the Radios, Metro, Alien, Behemoth and Hitman Trilogy coming. Currently playing RE4 Remake vr version and No man Sky, absolutely love it.
this is a byproduct of what people were saying about VR when it first hit the scene. back in the early days it was the consensus that games had to be purpose built for VR and porting flat games to vr wouldn't work. this sentiment became intrenched in the mindset of publishers that own these flat games and also became the popular opinion of the public as a result. since VR was a new platform and didn't have a lot of people investing in it, publishers and developers where much less likely to support large AAA games made specifically for VR. this mindset ultimately caused VR to stagnate as there was largely only Indie games and smaller scale titles being released. this along with studios not putting free movement into games for the longest time do the the false belief that most people couldn't handle it has put us where we are today. my favorite games on vr are almost all games that where flat at their inception. alien isolation anyone. so, all sony had to do was start retrofitting older Sony titles with true VR controls and interactions and they would have been able to corner the VR market and that would have allowed the financial ability for them to creat the purpose built AAA Vr titles we all crave. I think Sonywas and is to short sited and risk averse to see the forest through the trees so to speak. as a result, the forest has become a proverbial VR desert.
This is a common misconception. Sony literally never promised anything. They haven't even used the term "hybrid" in public. They said it in a closed online seminar where they were briefing VR developers on PSVR 2, and suggested it was a strategy they were pursuing, and that other developers might want to do the same. They never said they were going to make a lot of first-party hybrid games. For all we know, their strategy from the start was to make hybrid modes in first-party software when they thought it'd be easy/affordable/well-suited to VR (like Gran Turismo 7), and pay for third-parties to add hybrid modes to their games (like they did with Capcom for the RE games, and IOI for the upcoming Hitman games). The only reason we know about any of this at all is because Bryan from Without Parole managed to get into that online meeting and report back what he saw/heard. Everyone seems to think Sony made some big announcement about hybrids. They might not have even used that term in the private meeting.
In my humble opinion this argument presented in this video is flawed because there are plenty of 3rd party games to buy on ps store, so there is reason to care for psvr 2 if you like vr games.
Sony made the wrong bet on VR, Standalone and AR became essential features. That being said there are loads of Quest 3's on eBay which isn't a good sign. The software for VR is not compelling enough, people are looking for realism and we are getting mobile phone games.
The good thing about PSVR2, is it will be compatible with PS5, PS5 Pro, PC, and more than likely PS6 as well. I believe Sony sees PVSR2 as a long term platform, that they will build support for over years. Once the PS5 Pro arrives, I think the next 3 years will be focused on PS5 & PSVR2 exclusives. I would also not be surprised to see cross gen VR titles that come out for both PSVR2 & PSVR3 for many years into the future, like we have seen from PS4 to PS5. With the PSVR3 very likely using an advanced version of inside out tracking, all of our games should be backwards compatible, on that higher resolution, higher fidelity display, whenever it arrives.
@@Jaggith The issue with the PS3 was a radically different architecture. I see this as similar to the problem with PSVR1. Since the games were built around entirely unique controls, it makes it difficult to port 1st party games over, without completely reworking the gameplay for PSVR2. Inside out tracking has essentially become a universal standard for VR, and will only be improved upon in future headsets and controllers. Thus backwards compatibility and cross gen won’t be an issues.
Alternately, I can think of three third party VR studios/franchises that cultivated popularity with the PSVR community only to have Meta swoop in and buy them out of releasing on PSVR2. Camaflouj/IronMan, Impulse Gear/Farpoint, Dark Curry/Undead Citadel. It wouldn’t surprise me if there was more Meta interference that we’re completely unaware of. The answer to all of this is Sony porting its first party with a Vr studio or studios that they've acquired to circumvent the interference. (Flat2VR, WhiteMoon, VR Monkey, Vertigo, Survios)
Impulse Gear had some sort of falling out with Sony, but Sony owns the Farpoint IP afaik. They could give it to another developer to port or make a sequel, but they don't because they seem to have no interest in developing first-party VR games anymore. Undead Citadel, according to the developers, is still coming to PSVR 2. I think what happened there is they missed the PSVR 2's launch, then saw how it sold and decided to pivot to more established platforms with bigger install bases (PC first, then Quest). But it (supposedly) is still coming, and it's hard to blame them for making PSVR 2 their third priority. Look, I hate Meta. Like, I'll NEVER buy any of their products. But this conspiracy that Meta is ruining other VR platforms is sort of ridiculous. All of these things can be explained by the reality of the market. Developers go where the audience is. Meta doesn't need to pay to coerce them to their platform when they've outsold all the competition combined by more than triple. The things Meta are doing is buying developers (which is shitty, RIP Ready at Dawn), and paying for marketing rights (which, to be fair, Sony also does).
@@GreyMatterShades The only problem is that there aren’t many winners developing for Quest. It has a low attach rate, and in that respect it mirrors the mobile games market where 3-4 games generate 99% if its not Beat Saber, Gorilla Tag, probably VRChat or Bonelab it’s not making money. After all this time devs know this. They can’t keep just relying on unit sales numbers as their beacon of hope. Max Mustard and Cactus Cowboy devs stated their games sold better on PSVR2 than Quest and that’s probably true in most cases even though most people still want to only look at hardware sales. Hopefully, Sony will wake up, but I’m sure Meta is paying off devs. With Dark Curry the PSVR looked to be done before PSVR2 even launched. To make the Quest version they would have had to work for two to three years more without sales revenue. The only way it works id if Meta paid them to do not release something that was essentially finished and build the Quest version.
Camouflaj actually did republique vr first on oculus go. Impulse gear has no partnership with meta at all. I dont even know the third developer lol. On the other hand sony bought insomniac games who made good vr games on oculus for years before but are now only making none vr ps5 marvel and r&c games As for game sales, majority is still on quest. Walking dead S&S devs shared a chart some time ago that 80% of sales are on quest. And multiplayer games have 80-90% of its playerbase on quest (like breachers or Vail). Assassins Creed Nexus was considered a failure and has 400.000 players according to trophies. For comparison, both free resident evil 4 modes only have ~120k VR players according to RENet. As for rentention, its a general issue with vr but its best on quest. Horizon CotM was only finished by 8% of its playerbase for example (according to trophies).
@@coolertuep Republique VR was also developed and released on PSVR at roughly the same time. It could have been left available on PSN for more VR users like Beat Saber, but Meta had it delisted from the PSN store. Larcenauts definitely got marketing assistance from Meta, so Meta likely also paid for the development and very likely gave the deal on the condition that Impulse Gear wouldn’t make a sequel to Farpoint at that time. At this moment Impulse Gear could be and should be working on Farpoint 2 but that doesn’t change the previous infraction. By the way the problem isn’t even that Meta helps to fund games it’s really that they lie in wait for developers to make successful projects on a platform that’s not theirs and then pay the developer off to not develop a sequel for the same platform or delay the development instead of staying to their own platform partners. That’s not even mentioning the mass payoff that had to happen to keep PCVR developers in the forced collapse of of PCVR to mobile VR from porting to PSVR. It’s completely feasible that Meta payed them all off of porting their PCVR games to PSVR which would have been cheaper and faster than starting over on a completely lower processing level spec. Without a payoff common sense would dictate that even if they wanted to develop on mobile the faster turnaround PCVR to PSVR content ports would have taken precedence for a lot of small cash strapped studios, but most just left their games stranded on an effectively dead platform to start over on a completely different platform apparently with no cash incentive to do so, for years as some people want have you believe. Interesting that you mention Insomniac considering their long co-development of games with PlayStation decades before Oculus was even a twinkle in the Zuck’s eyes. Clearly, another “anti-VR from PlayStation/ anti-competitive” payoff from Meta happened their and then Insomniac employees collectively decided they wanted to work with PlayStation. RE’s numbers represented 12% of PSVR2 players at the time where AC represented 2% of Quest owners, so the failure label there was well earned. Walking Dead:SS was largely developed for Quest first and as a result took a substantial graphical hit for a PSVR release so it was never really going to appeal to a huge number of PSVR players that had already seen/played RE7. Game completion comparison is a completely useless metric as most gamers sadly don’t finish most games flat or VR.
Didn't they do the same when the original PSVR Came out? I'm not surprised by any of this. They launch the headset, then just let other devs put games on it, rather than sonys 1st party studios themselves.
People expected sony to do better in a 2nd generation I guess. Its still significantly worse than psvr1 though which had games like astro bot, wipeout, blood & truth, rigs and way more aaa cooperations (skyrim etc.?
@@nightcatarts The main problem I've seen is due to the ring of the controller connecting to the bottom of the handle. If you have large hands, with other controllers, your hands just extend past the end of the controller - with PSVR2 they can't do that, and get squashed against the ring.
That's the issue; they'd have to either remove that part of the code & rewrite it from scratch, or write some translation matrix that extrapolates positional data using gyroscope & accelerometer, renders a simple animation to present it within a frame, & feed that to the old camera-based code. Neither approach is simple or easy, but the second one would work far more effectively for the PSVR2 controllers at least.
@@nightcatarts Yep, They would have to swap the duelshock for the sense controllers imo, gyro and accelerometer data alone won't cut it. I don't think it will happen.
@@visorrepublic Yea seems unlikely for the DualSense, though I'd imagine it could be tracked by the headset cameras somehow (it does stll have that light in a known shape & colour) I just don't think it'd be accurate enough.
Quests can do handtracking through the cameras. So sony could track the dualsense as well with some algorithms. This would take some efforts though Or use the dualsense controllers. Thats how moss works for example
@@alexthegamecat no I mean the actual physical diving in game to dodge stuff , can imagine that being a bit motion sickness inducing for most if not handled right
I just want the gaming media to cover it properly, and that would do much of the work. Why should Sony promote games other than Metro and Behemoth (which they've been hyping a lot as of late!) if they don't see the gaming media cover PSVR2 properly. I keep seeing the lie of "no games" persist on the likes of Push Square despite Into The Radius and Max Mustard releasing, Metro, Alien, Behemoth, Wanderer all coming soon. Synapse, Resident Evil 4/8, Gran Turismo, Red Matter, all literally available to play right now. I mean the strongest release schedule of VR2 games since release is happening between now and Christmas (and whenever Wanderer releases!)
I think we have to realise VR is a niche corner of gaming, even on PC. I don't know anyone in real life who owns a VR headset and I own about four now.
@sirprintalot i genuinely don't think the VR enthusiasts realize how insignificant VR is in the grand scheme to the masses. I too don't know a single person with a headset of any kind personally and I know a ton of gamers. PSVR2 has a ton of games and I don't even have time to get through my backlog
When the Quest 2 was already out there as a stand-alone device that can also play PCVR gamers over a wire or wireless. When all the reviews of the Quest 3, and now Quest 3S, are so positive, it makes it hard to convince someone to take the chance on a device tethered to another device you may or may not own. Or you don't want to play VR where the console is and you don't want to move it around. Those are unique barriers that do not exist for Meta, and their devices are cheaper. I can sit in my office, bedroom, or front room and choose games from Quest, Steam, and PCVR. And here is the real kicker. The Quest devices are so portable you can just bring them to a friend's house. You can bring it with you when you go home for Thanksgiving on a plane. It is so much easier to put one in someone's hand and let them try it. Sony should have seen all this before, but they surely see it now. I have a PS5, and I assumed from launch that the PSVR2 would die pretty quickly, which I look forward to. I'd pick up a headset for $200 to play some Gran Turismo and check out the library. But it would just be a diversion. They did not sell enough devices and consoles to continue supporting it. Third party support will dry up because the install base limits their returns.
I feel like Ian is single-handedly fighting the fight, not just for PSVR2, but for VR as a whole, and I think his efforts deserve the Medal of Honor, or the Kings Consort or whatever you guys have in the UK. Gods peed, Ian!
The most crazy thing for me is why didn't Sony port the games that they had for the first PSVR to the new device. Astro bot: Rescue Mission, Blood and Truth, Farpoint, The Impatient and a few others would be amazing to replay on the much better hardware
After the PS Vita, PS Move and other abandoned hardware, I knew the PSVR 2 wasn't going to be something I'd consider until a minimum of 5 years of direct Sony support. I didn't get a VR1 until 2021 after it had an established library
@@SB-ln6kb you also need to remember that Move was released in 2010 and was immediately abandoned. It was just dumb chance that they fell ass backwards into a use for it when the PSVR released half a decade later
Ps vita was awful for first party support, but we actually got an incredible amount of third party support and ports be used of Sony's direct involvement. I think the move controllers had pretty decent support. Killzone 3, resistance 3, sports champions 1 and 2, medieval, carnival Island are all really decent games.
There are thousands of VR games on Steam. The PSVR2 to pcvr adapter set-up isn’t straightforward, you’ll need an additional graphic port cable and potentially a Bluetooth adapter to get it running on pc but it does work.
It cost Sony literally NOTHING to hype indie titles like Max Mustard on Twitter or their blog, or on UA-cam but they refuse. That should tell anyone with a brain that Sony doesn't give a damn about VR or their own VR player base.
Only thanks to your videos, I've kept my interest in the PSVR2 and started playing again. Max Mustard is definitely my next purchase, and hope Sony takes notice. We need more first party studios working on PSVR2!
A yes my favourite dust collector. Dont get me wrong enjoyed it for a while, great technical product, but the lack of support from Sony is just discusting and wrong.
I bought a PSVR2, my first VR experience. I had good times with it, but I haven't touched it in a while. Kind of disappointing it hasn't gotten more support.
THANK YOU....People always comment on my PSVR2 content (the most hated VR gamer here) that VR is dead...flat screen is dead lol. Sony is not supporting flat screen either and VR devs have more integrity and LOVE for gamers.
Maybe it takes a village to raise a VR system and when the creators of the device drop the ball it takes other developers to advertise their own games coming to PSVR 2.
Though we're still disappointed... I feel like Sony does care about the platform but.. only in the context that even flat ps5 is rather lackluster in frequency and esp communication. Definitely 3rd party studios keeping it relevant though. Wanderer, Behemoth, Metro... amazing upcoming games (probably) Then.. I THINK Sony helped pay for RE8 VR, Song in the smoke, REmake4 VR... though since re4 we havent seen something on that calibur iirc. Equally befuzzled by Asobi as I am with Sony for not bringing Astrobot a VR mode. I get theyd rather have a full fledged Astro VR game... but then they knew what they should've done with the existing one. Announce a port or... consider what most ppl say that theyd still prefer if Astrobot '24 had a basic VR mode even without the vr specific gameplay. So I think they care.. just not as much as we'd like.. and thats okay. Im so backed up on my gaming to do list anyways..
Ian you are a gem! I still badly want a PSVR2 for the exclusives and the exclusive tech, but I'm coming around on the frustration that's been boiling with Sony's lack of support and I really do hope it gets better because I want PSVR2 to thrive! Thank you for this great video! If I do get the money for it eventually, I still plan on buying one.
One of the most frustrating things about following, cheering for, and recently buying a PSVR 2 is Sony's seeming lack of support for it. Maybe worst of all is that they don't even talk about the stuff they ARE doing. They paid Capcom for both Resident Evil VR modes (as well as RE7 on PSVR 1), they funded Legendary Tales' last year of development (without which the game might not have been completed), and you can bet they paid for the recently announced VR version of the Hitman trilogy. But do Sony talk about their involvement in any of this? NO! There could be dozens of other examples where Sony helped out with funding a VR title, but we'd never know because they never publicly disclose how they're supporting the headset. The whole thing gives the impression that they've abandoned it. This strategy really doesn't instill consumers with any confidence that it'll be supported long term. I *love* PSVR 1, and I only bought a PSVR 2 after it went on a deep enough sale that I was sure I'd get my money's worth from the games that have currently been announced and released, because Sony's handling of things doesn't give me any confidence that they'll continue backing it. And YES, why the HELL aren't they talking to Flat2VR, or VR Monkey, or any number of other VR port studios about porting and enhancing their PSVR 1 games?! They could probably get their entire first-party PSVR 1 lineup on PSVR 2 for less than one twentieth of the cost of Concord, and I guarantee those games would move more units. Porting their flat games would take more effort, but is also a fantastic idea. Remaster the Motorstorm series as hybrid titles. Same with all their FPS games from the PS3 onward. ADD VR SUPPORT to TLoU 1 and 2 Remakes! At least that would justify why TLoU 1 needs its SECOND remaster in as many console generations! FFS Sony 🤦♂
I bought a PSVR 2 when Sony had that week long sale back in late July where they slashed the price by $200. For $350 I thought it was a good deal. Plus my PC has a RTX 2070 Super with a VirtualLink port so I can play PCVR games without the adapter. I wouldn’t have bought one though for $550.
I picked one up when we had the recent significant price reduction. The current RRP was / is simply too high . Since owning PSVR2 I have completed a bunch of games. RE8, Red matter 1&2 and the experience has been amazing. There are still a lot I need to play but I realise without new games coming out I will be left with a redundant headset. I don’t quite understand why Sony pretty much abandoned it upon release. As Ian said it’s likely to do with money. But it begs the question why did they develop it in the first place?. At this stage I don’t see a PSVR3 being made for a long time if ever. Not that we need this yet. The PS5 Pro console is going to add a welcome boost to the PSVR2 games and hopefully the PS6 will support the headset. So maybe if my headset physically lasts that long then there is some hope.
The inclusion of the psvr1 hmd and cotrollers is not an omission. It's an obvious statement that there isn't any ABot game planned for VR2. By doing this they say "See, that's where this dude comes from. If you're interested, you may play it there." If they included the new hardware in the game, people would immediately assume that there is going to be another ABot title for VR2 - as this one could likely be problematic to transfer to VR2 due to e.g. controllers and mechanics issues. And as they don't have any desire to do this, at least on PS5, what's the point?
We should care because a lot of the top VR games are on the PSVR 2 platform. Sony should go hard on the fact the headset works on two platforms and offers the best VR Gaming experience possible.
I loved re8 and re4 on psvr2 and dont understand why we dont get re2/3 and re7 on it as well! Also why not port the psvr astro to psvr2, so many missed opportunities... 😢
I bought PSVR1 but never bothered with PSVR2. Software is not compelling enough, AAA development left VR and we only have mobile phone quality Quest ports. Sony bet on high end VR and Meta took it in a wireless standalone budget AR direction. That being said I think Meta are struggling too, plenty of Quest 3's on eBay and various reports of low software sales. VR probably has to go away for a decade or two as the technology is still rapidly evolving from a hardware perspective, unfortunately not software. People will be constantly fatigued buying new headsets faster than people upgrade PC's
The rumblings are two 1st party games in development for the headset currently with one of them being cory barlogs new game at santa monica. Absolutely no idea if it's true but not all hope is lost....yet. Imo, the biggest thing the platform needs is a price reduction. Especially with the quest 3s out now. It's a quality headset with an amazing library and Sony just needs to give it that push.
I can't say why people should care, but I can easily say why I care, perosnally: because talented studios are making great stuff for it. I am fortunate to not have the mindset that only high budget games are worth my time. Would I like there to be more high budget games available? Of course! But that's entirely out of my control.
I was massively looking forward to it having got PSVR1 and am basically glad I held off on it's successor. Sticking with Quest 3 for now and 2d Astro Bot on the PS5. As a consequence I just bought Max Mustard as that looks amazing. On Quest 3. Well done Sony.
Just sold my PSVR2, it had so much potential. don't get me wrong there are some absolutely fantastic games out there but it is capable of so much more, if only Sony would put their full weight behind it. I've been burnt twice now with Sony and their VR promises, never again.
After seeing 90% of their co-workers at Sony Japan axed I don’t blame Team Asobi for prioritizing PS5 over PSVR2 to attract more sales from the larger userbase. HOWEVER, Sony not prioritizing porting Astrobot: Rescue Mission to PSVR2 first is indefensible. I don’t even believe that light tracking was all that critical in the game on PSVR1 because the gyros and other sensors in the controller (which are still in the dualsense) very likely did most of the heavy lifting. Sony’s software going back to the Eye toy had image based tracking without lights and I’m pretty sure it’s still in there or could be added to make up for whatever minor light tracking loss there would be for Astrobot Rescue Mission for PSVR2.
It appears Eurogamer’s overlords disagree, I notice no vr corners recently but they think a good use of Ian’s considerable talents is “reading out someone else’s review.”
See, I even understand if Sony's done the calculations and determined that a port of Astro Bot Rescue Mission or Blood & Truth wouldn't make enough money to be profitable or even break even. I feel like the bigger mistake was made during the PSVR2 conceptual stage. They should have designed the headset to make ports of PSVR1 games extremely simple to pull off, with a built in translation layer that could automatically adapt PSVR1 headset and controller positional data into PSVR2 headset and controller data with no additional work on the part of developers. I get that stuff that used the camera to track the Move controllers or the light bar on the DualShock 4 would be hard to accomodate. But something like Resident Evil 7 which doesn't even use any motion controls shouldn't have even required any work whatsoever to bring to PSVR2, it should have just worked out of the box like regular PS4 games running on PS5 with backwards compatibility. The only info the game would need to work would be the headset positional data. Why couldn't Sony simply create a software layer that emulates the PS4 camera by extrapolating the PSVR2 headset's 3D position using the PSVR2's inside out tracking? Resident Evil 7 wouldn't even have to "know" it wasn't being fed positional data by a camera or that it wasn't running on a PSVR1. In the end the PSVR2 to me feels like some executive's pet project that lost the confidence of the higher ups (as the VR market failed to grow substantially and no other companies were releasing AAA VR games) well after it was deep into development, and released it only out of obligation/sunk cost but were unwilling to give it more than token support (an added VR mode in an existing game and a single game developed for the ground up for VR that reused assets from another game). And them releasing the PC adapter feels like them trying to clear out remaining stock so they can finally wash their hands of the platform.
It's such a shame that Sony aren't willing to put the investment in as it could've been incredible. Hopefully Valve will reveal the "Deckard" soon. In the meantime, Meta is the only relevant option. Tbh, the Quest 3 is superb and getting better all the time with all the constant updates, not to mention all the games it's getting now like Batman etc. In fact I think it's reached a point where I'd choose it over the ps5 now if I had to let one go.
@@FrankieG11 unfortunately Xbox are too focused on they anti consumer rental service they wanna shove everywhere , VR doesn't work with that mentality and Xbox have lost so much due to Kinect they afraid to actually try to make something innovative again, we need these companies taking risks again
I bought it when it was 280 off on sale. I bought it knowing that Sony had shelved it. I bought it knowing that only devs were keeping it on life support. But I bought it because I wanted to play some PSVR2 games in VR and I have a 2070 vid card that will directly connect w/o the adapter. But the treatment of this headset like it's an embarrassment to them is criminal. I have rarely played it tho and spend a lot of time with the Quest 3. Max is on my list to pick up tho for PSVR2.
Times have changed since PSVR1, the gaming industry is doing worse. So perhaps we should adjust our expectations of output for a niche platform. And by the way, London Studios hasn't produced anything for VR since B&T...they worked on some FLAT for 3 years. I think Sony is doing what is financially viable for the PSVR2. Even Meta is only releasing Quest exclusives in homeopathic doses.
I've bought 2 PSVR2s this year. I very much enjoy it, and I've still got more games I still need to play, so don't really get the complaints that nothing is being released on it. Maybe I'm just too new to the market to see it. Sure, a few of the games I've tried have been less than stellar, but others were every bit the game changing experience people say. And I plan to start using Beat Saber to help lose weight as well. Anything that helps me get active while being entertaining at the same time is a win in my book. Sony does appear to have mishandled quite a bit of the PR for the thing though. The Bluetooth shamozzle on the adapter alone was baffling. Maybe they do have a few folks against the platform in high enough positions to make life difficult. But my personal experience so far isn't that Sony doesn't care at all. Surely they wouldn't have done the R&D needed for the adapter if they were leaving PSVR2 out to die on the vine. But I guess only time will tell.
To be honest, I'd prefer new games over remakes/remasters. We already get enough of the latter in flat gaming. I don't want to be perpetually playing the same games for the next 20 years. Flat games with new VR modes though? I'd be down for that.
I'm not that disappointed with my PSVR2 but I have to admit that I would love to get more games from Sony itself or some games from PSVR1 like RE7, Wipeout Astrobot Rescue Mission.
@@MartinSchmuckVR yep that's been the biggest problem with psvr 2 is lack of SONY supporting it third party really been carrying the torch , and if anyone should know it's quality exclusives that sell hardware it's Sony
What’s that? Sony has given up on a platform that isn’t a numbered home console after 5 minutes? If only we had some kind of historical precedent for this…
While I agree with most points, I can't agree with the main premise that big support from Sony is what makes or breaks the PSVR2. It is still a great and a versatile headset, it has an bright OLED screen, powerful haptics and it's comfortable. Yeah there are fewer games on PS5 store, but you can still connect it to PC. I have several modern VR headsets including PSVR 2. I see some problems here too, but it is still great headset. Sony's support problem is overblown in my opinion. I mean no marketing and no first party games - that's mostly true. But it doesn't break the headset itself
@@MrKinein it's quality titles that sell hardware , I bought psvr 2 because I'm a Gran Turismo fan if that game didn't support it I would still be waiting for something to make the purchase worthwhile otherwise I could just buy a cheap quest headset and plug that Upto my PC instead , sony need to push some bigger titles out if they wanna make this headset an actual success story
I think the reason they only used the psvr in astrobots latest game, is because THATS the only game available in vr for Astro on PlayStation. The original psvr
There's a great idea. And release God of War Greek collection with vr support as well, since most of those games are fix camera angles, with massive sprawling set pieces. Release it all for pc while they are at it.
All sony pr has been terrible this gen. The GAAS experiments have been a disaster so far apart from helldivers 2. There are so few good 1st party games for ps5 flat. Sony are working on 2 vr hybrid games and are supporting other studios. Theres loads of good looking games coming up so who cares. Well I do😊
To be fair, Sony might have dropped it, but luckily a lot of devs haven't. It might seem as if PSVR2 is dead, but it's actually quite the opposite. November and December are packed with big titles. Arizona Sunshine Remake, Metro Awakening VR, Behemoth, Alien Rogue Incursion, Wanderer Fragments of Fate. This may actually be the strongest line-up of games in the entire PSVR2's life cycle so far. It's just not Sony that's putting in the work...
If Capcom doesn't release the next Resident Evil game on PSVR2 than it's pretty much over. the PSVR2 will most likely just be an indie cesspool. And if that's the case, you might as well just get a Quest 3 & a PC, because that headset does nearly everything better. it truly feels like it's 1-2 generations ahead. I can't stand my PSVR2's fresnel lenses(Every game looks soft compared to Q3's 'looking through a window'-like clarity), along with it's tiny sweet spot, god rays, OLED motion persistence blur, mura, bulky form factor, terrible comfort, The controller rings rubbing against my hands etc etc. Sony desperately needs to do a PSVR2 revision and use the Quest 3 as a template and best it. Because as is, i can't stand it anymore. Sure, the black levels are deep, and it utilizes Eye tracking & FR to push more power, but that's where the pro's end purely based on image quality. If RE9(or whichever one is next) isn't getting a VR mode than i'm selling my PSVR2, and just using Q3 with PC. The recent port of Max Mustard was also disappointing on PSVR2.
@@IanFitzwilliam I never said it was dead. It just feels like it's close to being on it's last legs. And they refreshed it? How has sony refreshed the PSVR2? They dropped the Price by $200+ to clear their inventory. A headset revision with a strong trailer of exclusive AAA titles including Resident Evil 9 VR mode, Astro Bot Rescue Mission+, PSVR2 Worlds(etc) would be the ultimate 'refresh'. :P I'm sure, Sony will get it right with PSVR3 on PS6. but that wont probably be a thing until 2030, IF they even decide to jump on the VR bandwagon again.
Totally agree with you. I gave up hope. I paid full price on release and I thought that at least they would have made controllers available by now. They also spend countless money on games that people don’t care about (Discord) and none on those people care about. My philosophy has been if in PS5 in VR priority to that purchase but my priorities have departed from that. If Sony does not care why should be. My next headset won’t be a Sony headset if they don’t support by releasing controllers for purchase.
The problem is, the PSVR2 never had a path forward. Being tethered to a PS5, which you have to own, and limits where you can enjoy the device. The Quest 3 and Quest 3S are cheaper and standalone. There is no world in which Sony can afford to spend what Meta does on the Quest. Had it been a standalone, it would have had a good chance of matching the Quest 3 in sales. But Sony was asking their PR department to do the impossible. And while Sony clearly misread the market when they launched, they absolutely know now that the PSVR2 is dead. Sony should have spent a few years putting VR games on the Quest and PCVR before launching their own system. They would have learned a lot more about what VR gamers want.
Quite simply, when it comes to VR Meta are the Kings. I had the psvr 1 & 2. The psvr 2 is good, but apart from a small handful of games it isn’t really worth it. I’ve owned every iteration of the meta quest. Using my quest 3 for pcvr and standalone vr is the best.
I care because my $600 went towards purchasing it last year. What I probably will not care about is the next VR hardware from Sony as it seems that they are not interested in their own device anymore. Hell. I can't even find the PSVR2 section in the PS store right now. It seems to have disappeared. It is sad that Guerrilla is probably hard at work on another Horizon game instead of a stellar Killzone experience on PSVR2. I did purchase Max Mustard, and can't wait for the upcoming Katy Ketchup in 2026.
I'm sure Sony took a big gamble with PSVR but it has proved over last few years that VR is a niche market that will always have it's enthusiasts but the mainstream just don't care whether it's to do with cost, inconvenience, motion sickness or just lack of first party, quality titles and marketing who knows. Sony are now just happy to let third party devs to keep it trickle fed. Microsoft haven't bothered with VR for Xbox for this reason, purely financial and I doubt we will ever see a PSVR3.
@@oddball72 Xbox didn't do VR because they failed so hard with the Kinect to the point where it actually damaged the brand itself, they completely averse to taking any kind of risk now made the company seem worse tho like they just padding out a service and not really trying anymore
This video is about 6 months too early. Hitman, Metro, Behemoth, Aliens, Arizona Sunshine and several other very big games coming out next month. How many more games do you think they need?
Another lousy video trying to diminish the relevance of the PSVR2, a device that receives practically every release that PCVR has received in the last two years.
Pcvr isnt in a great spot either and mostly considered „dead“ though. Not like the best comparison. But pcvr at least got a ton of good games from the past (Stormland, alyx, asgards wrath, lone echo, boneworks, blade&sorcery, skyirm vr, fallout 4 vr, star wars squadrons etc.) AND it has mods There are also a few recent releases only on pcvr (F1 games, contractors showdown, into the radius 2 for example).
If Sony could grab the rights to Robot Alchemic Drive from Squeenix/Sandbox and pump a sequel to it through VR, or even remake.touch it up for VR - that would be a system seller.
I kinda hate the PSVR2. Even with 3rd party peripherals like the Globular, it's an absolute pain to keep it comfortably on your head and have that tiny TINY sweetspot in center view.
I've had problems with the PSVR2 where the headset would slip down (especially when playing a game that requires me to move like crazy and look up and down) and most of the weight of it would rest on the top of my nose and this is painful at times because there is no proper padding on that headset for the nose area (just very super thin rubber). You can feel the hard plastic coming through that super thin rubber. I have to keep readjusting the headset every 15 minutes because of that. As for the forehead area, after about 45 minutes I start to feel the "insides" of the headset against my forehead since there is only cheap rubber covering the inner part of the forehead portion of the headset where the rumble part is. When I take off the headset (I can only wear it for about 45 minutes to an hour max before it becomes very uncomfortable and I need a break), most times I have marks on my forehead. Overall, it's a headset that seriously needed more proper padding to be more comfortable. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy the games and I love the 4K resolution of the headset and the rumble feature is pretty cool, but Sony seriously needed to add better padding to make it more comfortable.
@@Zastrutzki I don't have that issue at all , what's up with the shape of you guys head mine locks perfectly especially with headphones dont even get that slight jiggle of the visor when I'm using my headphones
We media support too! UA-cam, 3d movies, live events… how about that new playstation concert? Hitman got me off Sony’s ass for about a week… all the things that are possible but not available makes me feel the same way. Why put out a headset and not have you movie app? Even though you HAVE a movie app? THEY GAVE AWAY NETFLIX subscriptions to sell the headset even though there is no support. Furthermore, there should be at least 10 3rd person adventure games to play in vr.. everything doesn’t have to rely on vr mechanics.. just ease people into the headset! Add more value! And bring back dreams for God sake
I bought a psvr 1 and many digital games for it, but when I found out that the psvr 2 was NOT backwards compatable, that's when I decided NOT to get a psvr 2. Also ps5 doesn't work with psvr1, so I shelved my headset. I'm over vr.
The fact that sony is willing to spend hundreds of millions on games fails like concord and fairgame$(I know its not out yet but looking at that trailer its not gonna do any better than concord lol) but not spend even 10% of that on vr tells you all you need to know about sony atm. They went the live service route and its alresdy blowing up in their faces.
@@stefandinu6389 good thing is people are voting with they wallets against it , Sony is going to have to look in a different direction if live service doesn't go well for them
Thanks for your support, Ian.

Well said. I wish someone at PS even attempted to show that they care about PS VR2 as much as the fans do.
I've got my PSVR2 on launch day and I'm still having a blast with it ❤
But, I can't desagree with Ian here. He's right in every single point
Yeah I love mine.
Entirely thanks to third parties though.
I had it preordered for launch, but unfortunately had to cancel do to a major cross country move. I still wish I had one despite all the problems.
Sony Vita'd it
Vita wasn't bad, sad that Sony drops works like this.
Britta'd it
As a Vita owner there was a definite moment early on, after Killzone I think, they just proudly announced they were done with it. Imagine if Nintendo dropped their handhelds in a couple years time. (Yes, it lived a lot longer because it’s awesome but it is a similar situation, I suspect the psvr2 does fine regardless)
I miss the Vita, so much
Vita sold around 15M units
PSVR2 is more like the 3DO
Ian kissing his helmet… an intervention might be required.
I think it's way too late for that, my mate
I can't even see mine let alone kiss it. 🥲
Sony never abandoned this headset, they simply haulted all 1st party support for it. Completely different things.
And I never abandoned my apartment. I just haulted all payments for it.
GIVE US A NEW ASTRO BOT
GIVE US THE OLD ASTRO BOT, WIPEOUT & CO.
Did you get a chance to try them both out?
Having bought both Quest 3 is way way better
Having bought both psvr 2 is way better. If you don’t got a pc if you do have a pc get a quest 3 but besides that I think psvr 2 clears quest 3 the graphics are breath taking and sure there aren’t that many first party games there are still so many 3rd party games that are fantastic and some that are coming out like metro and behemoth and all of which will be a better experience on the psvr2 than the quest 3. The only reason I could think about getting a quest 3 over psvr 2 is meta seems like they care about vr and are investing a lot into vr rather than what Sony is doing
I love my psvr2s graphics but so want the freedom of quest. Psvr3 is gonna kill it lol!
As an owner of both, you made the right choice 100%
As is, i can't stand my PSVR2 anymore.
It's an absurd upfront cost for what can be considered a peripheral.
and not making it backwards compatible with PSVR1 games. That’s why I skipped PSVR2.
I was surprised they went back to full price after practically giving them away for 350. That felt like a misfire to end the promo. It was selling well at that point.

Sony has a history of releasing spin off hardware like the PS Vita and then promptly abandoning it
@acurisur ik, they hate money lol
Not my intention to defend a mega corp but they don’t care because the customers don’t care. It ain’t selling.
PS Vita fans: First time?

Why are the classics on psvr not on vr2? Like Skyrim VR? or Super Hot VR? Are they actually clueless about what people want?
In my humble opinion this argument presented in this video is flawed because there are plenty of 3rd party games to buy on ps store, so there is reason to care for psvr 2 if you like vr games.
Thanks for the great content Ian. We appreciate everything you do.
Sony's history since PS3 would indicate the opposite.
On the other hand sony bought insomniac games who made good vr games on oculus for years before but are now only making none vr ps5 marvel and r&c games
As for game sales, majority is still on quest.
The Sense Controller looks so cool, albeit entirely impractical for people with big hands.
Isn't it the same size as any other VR controller?
Ok, wreck it Ralph
@@nightcatarts The main problem I've seen is due to the ring of the controller connecting to the bottom of the handle. If you have large hands, with other controllers, your hands just extend past the end of the controller - with PSVR2 they can't do that, and get squashed against the ring.
@@FlukeRogi Ahh right. That seems a bit unfortunate, though I suppose it means you're less likely to drop them.
How can we get Rescue Mission on PSVR2 when the DuelSense isn't tracked?
The game would need to be totally remade. Or very ugly ported.
Quests can do handtracking through the cameras. So sony could track the dualsense as well with some algorithms. This would take some efforts though
Or use the dualsense controllers. Thats how moss works for example

Yeah but he is also in a bubble, If more people don't step outside it and properly analyse why it isn't catching on it will just fade away.
Who cares if they dont care, PSVR2 is just there and Devs are all over it.
I bought a PSVR2, my first VR experience. I had good times with it, but I haven't touched it in a while. Kind of disappointing it hasn't gotten more support.
I LOVE my PSVR2. But do wish there was a few more blockbuster games from Sony. Other than that, I couldn’t be any more happy with it.
Right now, Sony don't care about the PS5 either. This year has been relative tumbleweed
Wanderer, Behemoth, Metro... amazing upcoming games (probably)
Then..
FFS Sony 🤦♂
Good point and I'm thankful that you talk about it. Thanks!
I agree but also hitman, behemoth, alien rogue incursion, wonderer.
I bought a PSVR 2, I don’t regret buying one, but I wish would care enough to put some more 1st party games on it.
Me think this a good idea. I wantttt, Hitman Trilogy and Blood Money, Ghostbusters The Videogame Remastered, Bioshock, Visage, and loads more. 😄
When you watch enough eurogamer/platform 32 to know just who made and is commenting in the video before you even watch it
I've got a psvr2 and I love it, BUT I can't cope with Reprojection or whatever it's called... I hope the PS5 pro fixes it
Max Mustard devs probably didn't pay for marketing with Sony.
VR Corner seems to have moved to Platform32 now.
@@nightcatartsYep, which is a shame because it marginalises an important voice for vr but great because it means we can still see it.
I know Microsoft own Bethesda now but I’d love a proper Skyrim port for psvr2 with updated visuals, mods and haptic support.
Microsoft have shut down all VR development, Hololens 2 and the Windows headsets.
"How to get Jim fired" - I saw that. IAN-NUH!
PSVR2 is abaolutely worth it just from 3rd party support alone and the oavr2 exclusives

Killzone 3, Resistance 3, Uncharted 3, and some other PS3 games, were made in 3D. Sony should adapt them for PSVR2.
@@NintenPizza if it's dead as you say why would they spend more money to refresh it? PS it's not dead

I never said it was dead.
I'm sure, Sony will get it right with PSVR3 on PS6. but that wont probably be a thing until 2030, IF they even decide to jump on the VR bandwagon again.
That’s the bigger problem right now is that there’s too many high end next gen looking VR games coming out next month.
Did Ian finally had his PC adapter work normally?
Skyrim - superhot - swords and sorcery would be a good start. Hard works done just port it.
It's better to let their VR games be released on SteamVR and Oculus.
_like Resident Evil 4 and other_
I care because my $600 went towards purchasing it last year.
Max mustard probably didn’t pay Sony to market their game
Love my psvr 2 but the lack of titles coming from ps themselves for the platform is disconcerning , at least 3rd party studios are making use of it
I'm sure Sony took a big gamble with PSVR but it has proved over last few years that VR is a niche market that will always have it's enthusiasts but the mainstream just don't care whether it's to do with cost, inconvenience, motion sickness or just lack of first party, quality titles and marketing who knows.
It's a shame if they abandon it. Upside is it'll still be around for ps6. Maybe that's where it shines.
I got burnt with the Vita. I swore never again. Then I got PSVR 1 & 2.... I'm swearing "never again" . Again.
But pcvr at least got a ton of good games from the past (Stormland, alyx, asgards wrath, lone echo, boneworks, blade&sorcery, skyirm vr, fallout 4 vr, star wars squadrons etc.) AND it has mods
There are also a few recent releases only on pcvr (F1 games, contractors showdown, into the radius 2 for example).
They didn't care about the first one either. And Astro Bot got his start on it!
As for the forehead area,
after about 45 minutes I start to feel the "insides" of the headset against my forehead since there is only cheap rubber covering the inner part of the forehead portion of the headset where the rumble part is.
I had that problem but for me wearing a beanie helped my head fill out the headset better but idk for you
@@Zastrutzki I don't have that issue at all , what's up with the shape of you guys head mine locks perfectly especially with headphones dont even get that slight jiggle of the visor when I'm using my headphones
Brilliant video Ian. 100% agree!
This forces developers to update their games.
I bought a psvr 1 and many digital games for it, but when I found out that the psvr 2 was NOT backwards compatable, that's when I decided NOT to get a psvr 2. Also ps5 doesn't work with psvr1, so I shelved my headset. I'm over vr.
They should have made a headset with meta horizon operating system that can also be connected to a ps5
If Sony ported psvr1 games like astrobot and blood and truth to the psvr2 I'm sure we will be all very happy
And wipeout!
