It has tentpole games. Just not many people know about them sadly. Gt7, resident evil 4 and 8, horizon, synapse, red matter 1 and 2 and more.

@joefawley9264 The only real game I'd consider tentpole would be horizon and maybe GT7. I would've also thought they would've learned this lesson already with PSVR1.

@@terminusaquo1980 There's really not. The only other alternative out there is the Quest 3, which has slightly better specs and its own library of games. Remains to be seen how well the adapter performs.
Other than that? There's the Valve Index, which has WAY worse screens and costs as much as a PS5 + PSVR2 and uses outside tracking, so you need to set up the trackers somewhere around your house. Anything from HTC has similar problems. And that's basically it, unless you're willing to spend thousands of dollars for the headset.

@@terminusaquo1980 They have better options like pairing the Quest 3 to a PC. The only two advantages the PSVR2 has over Q3 'when' paired with a PC are it's deeper blacks & richer vibrant colours. PSVR2 to pc connectivity strips down so much of the PSVR2's features.

Slightly better specs? I have both Q3 & PSVR2, and the formers sweet spot is FAR wider, Pancake clarity is clearer/sharper, it's a lot more comfortable, it's wireless, has zero motion blur(PSVR2 uses a high persistence blur OLED display...), there's no mura or god rays, minimal glare, ring-less controllers, mixed reality, colour pass through, built in audio speakers, it's super slim and sleek, and it has an amazing eco system, store front, that goes beyond just VR gaming.
The Quest 3 + PC feels like it's 1-2 generations ahead of the PSVR2. The latter is a bulky cumbersome mess that feels like you're wearing a medieval torture device. I loved Resident Evil 8 VIllage VR, and the first half of RE4 VR, but 8 has already been modded for PC VR, and I'm sure the latter will get the same treatment.
On the flip side, PSVR2 has deeper blacks & richer/vibrant colours, but all of it's other features including haptics, head haptics, adaptive triggers, along with eye tracking & FR have all been disabed on PC.

Look at Nintendo, they have successful characters/mascots like Mario & Zelda that always come to the next gen systems and people want to play the new experiences. Sony made a mistake not bringing their mascots to VR2. Astro, Sackboy, Kratos, Nathan Drake etc could have come, even in shorter experiences and PS5 owners might have bought into it.

A PS5 is already expensive, and you have a growing number of people saying that they aren't ever buying a PS5 because of low number of games/they just don't like Sony/they are cheap. First of all, I absolutely HATE IT when people have to tell people how they should react. Any jackhole that puts "you" and "should" in their titles in any order there are never to be worth a read at all. Same goes to everyone on UA-cam that does this with their video titles.
Second, it really is unfortunate that such a impressive headset is basically going the way of the Vita with how much Sony is basically giving up on the thing. I mean it was too be expected with how expensive it is compared to its predecessor but at the same time it is something that should've been seen coming by Sony themselves.

Yeah, when you launch hardware that's more expensive than a console with almost no marketing and no clear commitment to supporting it long-term, you really can't be surprised if people don't rush to pick it up. It's such a shame.
The really unfortunate thing is, if you look back at the Vita now, it was actually fairly well supported. Sony kept manufacturing it for 9 years, and published/developed over 30 games for it, including major franchises like God of War, Uncharted, Killzone, Resistance, Wipeout, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, and Little Big Planet. If PSVR 2 had a third of that support, Sony would've sold millions more of them guaranteed.

Resident evil 7 was VR and used the game controller that would be fine with me. So playing VR with using regular controllers would be better than nothing.

PSVR2 is AWESOME! Me and my brother got one at launch and we still hop in at least once a week, (less in hot weather) with Walkabout or the latest new co-op VR game. I totally agree with Mystic. The media loves to rag on VR2 but the reason VR2 isn't selling gangbusters is less to do with PlayStation and more to do with VR. Sure, things do limit it. Wite etc. For one. Meta has 7 billion potential users compared to PS5's 60m. That and, well. It's a PHYSICAL activity. Very tiring. Kids love VR. Adults? After work? Oof. That, admittedly, is an event sorta thing. Like a launch of a new single player game on a free weekend. I love a good single player campaign VR (Horizon, Saints & Sinners, Sybapse) or a drop in drop out (Beat Saner, Demeo, Creed, Pavlov) but it will NEVER replace a couch and a controller with no exhaustion or slight dizziness. That doesn't mean its not FUN or worthwhile. I think Sony and 3rd parties will absolutely support this next gen piece of VR kit. The tech is top of class and far cheaper for PS5 OWNERS then a PC where often a similar spec like Index is $1000+ and requires separate purchase for controllers etc. Quest 3 is a fierce competitor with its price point and its aggressive 3rd party exclusives/times deals. But that's just that. Metas doesn't have first party. Neither does Valve. Half Life in 2019. Asgard Wrath in 2023. In 5 years between them, two real VR games made by them. Meanwhile, Sony first year has GT, Horizon and Firewall. This does matter. Sony are supporting it, Synapse and Resident Evil or No Man Sky are not charities. Sony funded those too. So, I think Sony should keep supporting then as they do any other 3rd party. There are big next gen games coming. Behemoth, Metro etc. Just keep supporting partner studios and get them their sales. I don't want first larty studios to do VR games, focus on the main course. Great PS5 exclusives. I can't have Naughty Dog waste time on VR. I'd rather a VR mode, of course but look. You can get those, for FREE on PC and newsflash. They don't move the needle or sell VR units for PC VR. In fact, Batman VR and Assassin Creed Nexus ALSO do not move Queat units, Ubisoft was disappointed in their sales. It simply isn't a solve all for First Party VR games to magically fix everything. Such an unrealistic & misguided expectation. Consumers don't even know the difference between first party. Yet, Media do slant against Sony & towards Meta who does the same stuff essentially. You cannot convince me there isn't a negative slant for PSVR and its certainly unbalanced. That all said, It don't matter. PSVR2 isn't going anywhere. VR2 games will continue to come to PSN. There are games Sony has funded in the Hero Projects that are VR. Third parties have found success like Skydance, Mass, Beat Saver etc. So, indies have a platform to make money. It can do fine for the creative value add it is off of passion. Its also future proofed. USB C, so PS6 and beyond will no doubt support the library built today on PSN with PS5. No doubt. It may not be where Sony hoped but VR is and in my mind always will bee a niche because of the universal barriers. Its fun and a novelty, like any flat game genre. Like graphic novels, or horror games or Asymmetrical multilayer. VR slides in there. I look forward to holding into VR and I' gladnI don't need a 0C to get VR games. As a PS5bowner, its awesome. And the tech and features, when used by devs, are fantastic. Saints and Sinners looks & runs better then PC counterpart because of the smart tech of Fov rendering. So, to end my rant. VR2 is awesome, go play it. Get acclimated and have fun with it. As for Sony, stop with these expectations for VR. Just enjoy it for what it is and be realistic. Plenty coming to VR2 to look forwards too. Just its always going to be a bonus add on peripheral. If 5m is enough for VR1 for Sony to see success and take their 30% off all software. I've no doubt VR2 will get their some day. Especially given PC compatibility now and the eventually price cuts. So, yeah. Just enjoy it and of its not for you, move on. Its a great piece of kit. Thats all it ever needed to be.

Hate to burst your bubble but meta/oculus have a lot more games that Asgards wrath 2.
There are loads of games under the “Oculus studios” umbrella, and most of them are the best games you will find in VR to this day. Just to be clear I’m talking about PCVR, games like Asgards wrath 1, Stormland, lone echo 1 and 2, phantom covert ops, journey of gods, and many more if you just look at oculus originals on their store.
Yes a lot of these games are developed by third party studios (3 of them PS/ex-PS Studios). Stormland is insomniac, lone echo is ready at dawn who made the order 1886 and Asgards wrath are sanzaru who made some sly cooper games and some others. But they are still exclusive to the oculus/meta ecosystem to this day. If you buy a quest and have a good pc you get 3 big VR libraries (quest standalone, oculus PC and steam) with the one headset, and the ability to play wireless.
As I always have to say when I’m compelled to comment on these things, I AM NOT A FANBOY. I play where I get the best experience, and 9/10 times that’s on PC, no argument. I do have PSVR2 and have put some serious hours into the resident evil games, waking dead, gran turismo, finished horizon and generally enjoyed everything I’ve played on it.

There are a lot of great games on PSVR 1 (sooooo many more than just RE7 and Astrobot!), and it's tragic that they're stuck on old hardware that's more prone to failure than a console (due to the physical nature of VR).
At this point I think the only hope for playing PSVR 1 games on more modern hardware is if someone makes a PS4 emulator and adds VR support.

While I like the pass through fearure on the psvr2 I wish it could incorporate the external camera for greater accuracy. The main advantage of vr fps is that your cross hair isn't center of screen you dont have to be looking where your shooting. In psvr1, I can unload on enemies coming through a door and check my 6. In psvr2 if your controller isn't in your front facing arc, it isnt picked up by the internal cameras and accuracy is lost.

The argument of Astrobot not being build from the ground up doesn't hold up indeed, for several reasons. Two reasons why older games generally don't work well in VR is because the games were made/modelled in different scale than what would feel real in VR. As they did that to fake certain effects, like making a stage look bigger than they really were.
So what one only has to do to have it be a hybrid game, is to make sure everything is made to scale. And I don't think Asobi would've approached this game differently than AstroBot on PSVR1.
Except for the tracking of the controller, there is nothing extra in the original AstroBot game that it wouldn't work as a flat game. The headset was basically a free-look camera.
Hybrid games were a issue in the past, because you had to sacrifice nifty effects and resolution, as you had to maintain a high framerate and had to render the image twice. But with the combination of diminishing returns for effects and resolution, with the addition of foveated rendering, that has become a moo-point too.
In my spare time, I'm working on a game that is both flat and VR (okay, the genre I'm working on is a bit more straightforward and obvious to get both). And I'm a layman in game-development.
So really, these days there is no excuse anymore to say developing a game for both flat and VR is extra work. Because there isn't. It's the same amount of work as if you would choose to go for adding even more particle effects, raytracing, even higher resolution. It's not about can't, but just a case of wanting to.
You can argue that VR is niche, but so is life-like graphics and effects. Except for the "look how far we can go" people, I think most people are happy to stay with (stylized) graphics were you still feel that it's a game and not a movie.
And wasn't it Sony themselves that claimed to be going for every game to be hybrid, going on forward?
I'm still waiting on current gen, because for me it was and still is too expensive. I like VR, but I have been holding of, because somehow I had a feeling Sony would veer away from it. The gaming industry has become very 'cocky' and think we just buy everything they present us. That's partially because of social media en 'influencers', and just dumb people who are easily influenced (which are a lot).
I miss the good ol' days of gaming, where gaming was about gaming for gamers. But that's the problem when something gets picked up by the majority. It loses its charm.

    • @GreyMatterShades
      @GreyMatterShades 3 місяці тому

Totally agree about Astro Bot. PC VR mods of games like Sackboy's Big Adventure, Crash Bandicoot 4, and the Spyro remake all prove platformers work amazingly well with basic VR ports (your head as a free-look camera). The only issue is that some environments are only modeled where the camera is looking, so in a game like Sackboy, if you turn your head way to the left or right, you'll see the level geometry just abruptly end on some levels. That sort of issue can be easily fixed by just having a fog effect to blend the edge of the level into the background.
As for Sony's hybrid claims, this has been dramatically misconstrued almost everywhere. Sony never officially talked to the public about hybrid games at all. What happened was Bryan from the UA-cam channel PSVR Without Parole (now just Without Parole, though he still focuses on PSVR 2), managed to get access to a private online developer briefing/seminar that Sony was running for studios who were interested in PSVR 2. From this he found out the specs of the headset (around 8 months before they were announced) and that Sony was talking about the benefits of making hybrid VR games. He leaked both points. Bryan never said Sony was planning to make all of their games hybrid, and nobody from Sony had ever even used the term "Hybrid" publicly until Nicolas Doucet from Team Asobi used it to claim it only works for first-person and racing games to justify why Astro Bot doesn't have VR support.
Basically everyone read too much into it and got their hopes way up. I don't blame people, as hybrid games could be super important for the future of VR. Still, if Sony paid any attention to public discourse, they could have made some public statements to manage people's expectations. But that would require a shred of effort, which is apparently too much.
I also haven't bought a PSVR 2 yet, though I do plan to. For me it was a little bit about price, but more the lack of backward compatibility (I've got 100+ PSVR 1 games), and even before launch Sony was being cagey about their future plans to support PSVR 2. I think Sony has become too accustom to gamers scrambling to buy whatever they put out, even with little to no marketing effort. They've forgotten how to advertise hardware when consumers need convincing.

So far PSVR 2 has 2 games from Sony IP, one of which is just a mode added to an existing game. Both were launch titles, and Sony has said nothing about future support since. At this rate, PSVR 2 would be extremely lucky to finish its lifespan with a third of the first-party support the Vita had. It probably won't get 1/6th.

The PSVR 2 is the middle point on quality and price I've been waiting for for so long, it's a shame the economy/gaming industry is in the state it's in when it did finally arrive (with studio closures and shareholder greed limiting development potential, and the economy limiting purchasing power of consumers (making VR a harder sell)). I experienced all of the must-play games like Astro Bot, Moss, Beat Saber, RE7 etc. Even then I never felt like me getting it 50% was a steal. It felt just right. Because as soon as you leave the AAA sphere, indie VR games simply could not achieve the same level of immersion for me. Now PSVR2 is basically triple the price of what I got PSVR1 for and with FAR fewer "must play" games so I could never imagine myself getting it in its current state and I believe a lot of people feel exactly like me. If I'm paying a premium for a gadget that depends on my already expensive console to run, I want premium experiences.

I don't think it's a learning issue and to me it's not baffling. It's a question of limited studio resources. Sony currently needs all of its studios working on regular PS5 games. Otherwise they won't be able to compete with these Xbox + Bethesda + Activision showcases.

Great video. I agree that two VR games in development from Playstation Studios is two more than I thought there'd be. It guts me how Sony has dropped almost every possible ball with PSVR 2.
One thing I'll push back on: yes Sony gives their studios a lot of freedom to come up with their own ideas, but those projects still have to be pitched to Sony to be greenlit and funded. That's why there's no Days Gone 2. Bend pitched it, Sony management rejected it. Similarly, if Sony management wanted to push PSVR 2, they could probably encourage or even mandate that studios make games which at least have some sort of VR mode. The creative decisions could still be made by the studios, but if Sony said "you're supporting this hardware" or "you're going to support this other team when they make a VR version of your game," the studios would do it.
As for Astro Bot, based on everything I've seen, it could have worked well in VR with minimal effort. Nothing they've shown is dramatically different from the PSVR 1 game Astro Bot Rescue Mission. People have modded Sackboy's Big Adventure to run in VR, and the only issue I've seen is if you look far in a direction the camera wasn't supposed to face, the environment cuts off harshly. An effect to simply make it fade into the background would fix that, and that's all that's needed.
Even if Team Asobi wanted to focus on the flat version, Sony could have made an arrangement with them that they or another team (possibly third-party) would port the game to VR after they were done, and they could've announced that was happening when they announced the game. Capcom did exactly that when they announced RE4 Remake (at the end of the trailer it said "VR content also in development" which wound up being a full VR mode released around 8 months later).
I also really agree that part of what is holding back PSVR 2 is the average gamer's feelings about VR in general. That said, fixing its fixable problems would improve its situation a lot. VR is tough to sell, because people can't really appreciate what it's like to play VR until they've done it themselves. Most people who buy into VR do it as a leap of faith, so the higher the price tag, the fewer people are willing to take the leap. It needs a price cut.
Public demos would also help this quite a bit, and it's something Sony did with the PSVR 1. I agree its never going to become an absolutely massive platform, but a lower price and more clear support from Sony (even if it's via third-party studios) would improve its market position by a lot.

  • @rodriguezkev
    @rodriguezkev 3 місяці тому

Hybrid VR games is really where Sony should have focused on. GT7 and the RE games are the types of games that will sell units and it takes the risk out of limiting big budget games to a small userbase.
There's so many AA games out their that could have been given a VR mode like Alien Isolation and Stray for a relatively small investment.
Sony really dropped the ball by not focusing more in those types of games and being way to stingy on the marketing front.

I feel like it's a vicious circle for VR in general right now. Software available doesn't justify the entry price to it (either on pc or ps5). I think people are interested and curious about VR, but then see what's available to play... and let's be honest, it's not great. So, I believe it is a matter of time, the tech will become cheaper, and developments will also improve gradually.
VR2 in particular, besides price, has another obvious issue, which is the non backwards compatibility with VR1 games. Personally was excited about getting VR2 as a non VR1 holder, even bought several VR1 games in advance of the official VR2 announcement. Then, got no compatibility and a price tag that felt too expensive given the circumstances (no backwards comp., more expensive than PS5 while being an accessory, doubts about how Sony was gonna treat it as they had quickly abandoned the literal VR2 predecessor...).

I fully agree with your analysis of the issues with the PSVR2! I pre-ordered PS VR to because I was running off of the excitement. I felt from having such a wonderful experience with PSVR1. I’m sorry I did that. I really should’ve waited to see what kind of support Sony would give? The first iteration didn’t thrive because of major Sony support. It became amazing because of third-party game support. What I’m not understanding is why PS VR developers are not making games for every vr system! The entire industry needs all the support that it can get so should be made available for all systems not just one or two. I am so disappointed in my purchase. I’ve only played with the headset once or twice and have not touched it anymore! A serious waste of money!!! I erroneously assumed that that initial lineup that came out so strong was a precursor what was to come. But I failed to look at what the track record already was for the PS5. If the PS5 was having issues, I don’t know what made me think the VR system would fair any better I was just caught up in the excitement. I developed a close family from just one game in VR and assumed that that game would be just as amazing in VR2 but the developer dropped the ball and it’s just not as good and all of my friends are still playing on vr1. I know the long-term success of the gaming industry is bright, but I do fear that the next couple of years for the industry is gonna be rocky I don’t see any happy endings or pots of gold at the end of the gaming rainbow right now. I think the next couple of years are going to be rough especially for PlayStation first party games!!!!!

I still stand by the argument that the only true gem on my PSVR1 is the upgraded version of Rez! It is mind-blowing! It was already that on Dreamcast and PS3, but the PS4 version makes it even more so. Those are the sorts of things we should have been getting- almost arcade like experiences. But they didn't, and now we have Xbox fans and Switch fans claiming we've got nothin coming up (because they've forgotten their drought over the years while we've had Stellar Blade FF7Rebirth, etc. Games that have been truly spectacular!

I'am mainly a PSVR2 Player. I love the headset and the first year was incredible (RE 8 & 4, GT7, Synapse, Horizon and so much more). We still have and had some bangers this year but it's all third party.
I was convinced that I will get a PS5pro but if Sony did not announce something I want for my headset I will invest that money in a PC. It really depends what these two Games means. I really hoped that the Hybrid-Leaks a few years back where true. More flat games in VR is my dream. UEVR is not perfect but it is right now the closest thing to what I wish for.
I hoped that after Jim Ryan leaving things could be better, but this does not sound like it.
I still don't get why PSVR2 had such a bad reputation after the first year. I think Sony really tried but everyone hated on it anyway (looking at you Greg Miller 👀). With RE4 on Quest everyone loved it but with the Remake on PSVR2 so many people said "oh I played it half a year ago, why bother" even though that version is insane and one of the best VR things out right now. So Sony perhaps concluded that even trying does not move the needle... It sucks for me, but perhaps that's how the state of VR is right now.

    Great breakdown! 👍
One small point I’d make about the PC adapter is that while the various things like headset rumble, adaptive triggers, and eye-tracked foveated rendering won’t be available for PC games, I’m pretty sure that’s gonna be a case-by-case scenario.
I don’t think there will be anything precluding devs and modders from incorporating it, but all of those things are new to the PCVR space and so currently no/few games offer any of it.
But I think they could all work *IF* a dev or modder makes a point of adding those functionalities in to a particular title. At least that’s what I’m hearing from PC folk.
Regardless, even without those features the PSVR2 will be the least expensive OLED panel PC headset by leagues.
