I was fortunate enough to see Fanny circa 1970 at a small club in Houston that only sat 300 people. They have songs that rock way harder than this. Glad you found 'em.
Members of Fanny have sung background on a couple of songs by one of your favorite groups (and mine), ELO. You can hear them on "Livin' Thing" and "Tightrope". I highly recommend reacting to both.
I'm so happy you found Fanny. They're one of the original pioneers of women in an all-female rock band, along with the Go-Go's, Runaways etc even though they're not as well known.
WOW!! THE TABLES HAVE TURNED...THE STUDENT SCHOOLS THE TEACHER!! Let me explain, I have been watching you guys since pretty much the beginning when Jordan was by himself and watched you guys grow into one of the best reactor teams that I've seen on UA-cam!! And as a 64 year old gentleman ( I use the term loosely) who enjoys watching younger folks get experience and feelings about the music that I grew up with!! So in a way I kind of feel like a teacher and you guys are like the students learning about things that I already know about so to speak!! But this song today is a reversal because I can honestly say that I have never heard of this band or this song and now I will be going into the rabbit hole to research and listen to other things because I honestly can't believe that I never heard of this group and this song was fantastic!! So thank you Amber and Jordan for teaching ME something!!!
I only knew them because they actually appeared quite often on talk shows in the 70's, like Merv Griffin, Mike Douglas, etc. But I never heard them on the radio. This is their biggest "hit", and it barely scraped into the top 30. I've since learned more about them, as they've kind of been rediscovered in recent years.
FINALLY! Someone reacted to Fanny! "Butter Boy" would be like 5 or 6 down my suggested list, though. You MUST MUST MUST check out the live Beat Club videos(with the blue-screen background, the ones with overlayed graphics will kill your eyes!) "Blind Alley" rocks hard, but they're all good. I simply can't suggest anything else on youtube more. BTW, as I recall from my reading, "Butter Boy" was about David Bowie.
OMG.... I completely forgot about this song. I loved this song! I had the 45 rpm. Wow... What a blast from my past! Thank you whoever suggested this. Thank y'all for choosing this one.
It was recorded in 1974. It debuted in the top 40 at position 36 March 15, 1975; it peaked at position 29 April 5, 1975, and dropped out of the top 40 the next week, which would have been April 12, 1975. Personally I think it should have gone much further. They covered a Beatles Song "Hey Bulldog", which is absolutely incredible. I don't think it charted, but there is a video of it.
You absolutely have to see a live performance of them because they can rock hard. The lead singer and guitarist are Filipino-American sisters, so Asian Americans in rock 'n roll is very special to me!
1st album "Fanny" released in 1970. "Blind Alley", "Charity Ball" are good songs for the next round 🤘 Just found out about these ladies last year - good rockin!
AT LAST! … I have been trying to suggest to all of the reaction channel hosts that I watch to give Fanny a listen. VASTLY underrated group! All it takes is to listen to their early material to realize how proficient musicians they were, on par, and often superior to their male counterparts of the time. "Ain’t that Peculiar" - "Blind Alley" - "Hey Bulldog" - "Charity Ball" are shining examples of their talent. Having noticed that the " reactors" often tail each other, I have no doubt that Fanny will soon have many more new fans in the days to come. Congratulations to the Rob Squad for being the first! A documentary on them is out now ( or soon ) … does anyone know how I can watch it ?
I'm surprised that you guys haven't done another song by these guys for female Friday. I highly recommend: Fanny - Blind Alley (1971) | LIVE. It's just them playing live with no audience or anything. They kick butt and were very seriously underrated. I love these guys, I hope you give them another chance. 👍
Fanny are good in the studio but even better live!! They have a lot of videos on UA-cam from the old German TV Show called "Beat Club." Those rock! Especially when the keyboard player sings, she has that gutsy blues voice!
Fanny were the first all-female rock band to have a Top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart back in 1971. Their debut song, Charity Ball, peaked at #39. But Butter Boy was their follow-up song. It went all the way to peaked at #25 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the early summer of 1975. It's their biggest hit song ever!!!
I don't recall Derek and the Dominoes covering this Cream song (I'll research that). I do remember hearing it in '69 when it was released, and seeing Eric performing it on his 2001 World Tour. Check out the DVD recorded in Los Angeles. You can hear me screaming.
@@bobbailey8282 No they didn't. I accidently referred to Derek and the Dominos where I really meant Cream as the band that did "Badge" , Fanny covered it.
At this time, Patti Quatro was a member of the band. Her sister, Suzi Quatro, became a rock star in the U.S. and was even bigger in England. In the U.S. she is primarily known for the song Stumblin' In which is a duet with Chris Norman. She is also known for her frequent appearances on Happy Days as leather-wearing Leather Tuscadero of the band Leather and the Suedes.
and Patti and Suzi Quatro's band "The Pleasure Seekers" was the first all female rock band signed to a label I believe, but I don't know if it was MAJOR label. The Pleasure Seekers was also the inspiration for the "Runaways" as Joan Jett was supposedly a big fan of Suzi Quatro.
Some Female Friday Suggestions. Seen mentioned many times, you gotta do Til' Tuesday's "Voices Carry" Amazing song and story video to boot. Also you loved Laura Branigan's awesome "Self Control", my favorite by her, but her best pure vocal performance is "Power of Love". It never got the due diligence it should have, amazing song and vocals by her,. Also very good was hit Solitaire". And lastly, revisit the Eurythmics and "Would I lie to you" , you'll love it...
Listen to "all Mine" and "Last night I had a Dream" both great songs. They didn't get the recognition they deserved. I grew up in the 70s and had never heard of this band until recently. thanks for reacting
Love this group! I grew up on Rock and Roll, but only heard about this group recently - which makes me wonder (really!) what other hidden gems I've missed!
I went to a lot of concerts in the late 60's early 70's ( tickets were inexpensive) saw a lot of good band's that never got well known, even if they did have an album.
Her name is Jean Millington she is also the groups bass player. This was off their fifth album it was their second song to chart in the top 40 the first was charity ball. The first 4 albums are best. If want that growl try fanny young and dumb written by Ike Turner, or blind alley written and song by Nickey Barclay. If you want to rock seven roads if you want deep try fanny conversayion with a cop or funky soul shade me. They are one of the best rock groups of the early seventy's even though at 60 year's of age I just found them in 2019. This song is about David bowie They where one of his favorite's too.
Fanny was awesome. Four very talented ladies who could rock out. There are some clips out on UA-cam recorded for a German TV show, that show just how talented they were and rock out a bit more than this song does. Check those out. They should have been a lot bigger than they are, but were maybe to a bit too far ahead of their time. I remember their song Charity Ball being played on the radio in the early 70s.
That German Show is Called Beat Club. It was on German TV From 1965 to 1972 from Bremen West Germany. The site on UA-cam contains a wealth of videos of Bands from that era, American, British, German and from the rest of Europe. Great Bands a lot of people have never heard but should!
@@GairBear49 Yes Beat Club, I couldn’t recall the name when I posted earlier. I also love the Old Grey Whistle Test clips from the BBC. Some great stuff on there as well.
Saw these ladies live in 1970 but i remember they rocked out much more than they did on this song. Straight forward rocking out ! Their musicianship was excellent, especially the keyboard player. They do a good cover of the Beatles " Hey Bulldog "
I have been waiting SO LONG for you to react to Fanny. I even emailed last year about it - which I never ask any reactors to react to anything 🤣 Please do Charity Ball, Ain’t The Peculiar, Badge or Hey Bulldog!
I suggested Fanny a few weeks ago along with with a link for another song. I'm glad you found them. "Butter Boy" is from their fifth album. I discovered Fanny on AM radio when I was about 12 years-old (64 yo now). I still have the vinyl records, and the CD box set they released some years ago.
Thanks for this. I had never heard of this band before. It's funny, I've been watching several reaction channels, but all of the music featured were songs I was familiar with (even really old songs) and I was feeling a little jealous of the reactors who are discovering something new they'd never heard before. So now this is something new for me that I had never heard of so, thank you!
This has made me so happy! Fanny need to be remembered and recognised - they have harder songs. Which I know you both like! A Fanny song every female Friday would be bad ass 🧡
Hey Rob Squad. I'm so glad you reacted to this one. A totally unexpected and pleasant surprise. I bought this one as a 45 in 1975 because a. it was an all female band and b. that it was a dirty song. Such memories. So many elements to this song even a kind of Pink Panther feel to it.
Fanny is a highly underrated band who have finally gotten some recognition in recent years with the release of a documentary in 2021. Unfortunately, Butter Boy does not feature their original guitarist, June Millington, and drummer, Alice DeBuhr. They also broke up shortly after this song was released. The members at this time were Jean Millington (bass and vocals; she sang lead on this track), Nickey Barclay (keyboard, vocals), Patti Quatro (guitar, vocals) and Brie Brandt (nka Brie Howard-Darling; drums, vocals).. Fanny's first four albums were more hard rock. These included their first hit, Charity Ball, and a series of other songs worth reacting to, including Blind Alley, Thinking of You, All Mine, Place in the Country, Borrowed Time, and excellent covers of Badge, Ain't That Peculiar, Hey Bulldog, and Last Night I Had a Dream. After the band broke up in 1975, the Millington sisters tried to form a new band, but they declined contract offers because there were asked to use the Fanny name and material. They also performed and recorded under their own names. Barclay released one solo album before retiring from music. DeBuhr went into A&R. A few years ago, the Millingtons and Howard-Darling formed a new band called Fanny Walked the Earth, which release one album before being sidelined by both of the Millingtons having health problems that they have been recovering from.
Jean Millington is the singer - this is from their final album - great story two sisters Jean and June Millington arrived in the US from the Philippines in the early sixties. As teenagers, they played gigs throughout the western part of the US and Canada. Worked their asses off until they made it David Bowie (the song is about Jean and David's short time together) said that it was a crime that Fanny wasn't more recognized. Check out The Beat Club video with Fanny on UA-cam. Most excellent.
I love when y'all give love to seriously underappreciated acts like Fanny! It's such a shame that they broke major ground in music, yet today few people have heard of them. Definitely check them out some more!
Love Fanny! They need to be in the RRHOF! You need to check out more of their live videos on UA-cam. A really good one is titled Rock Group Fanny on French TV. It's about 10 minutes long but it really shows their rock & roll vocals and muscianship.
Their first three albums (Fanny, Charity Ball, Fanny Hill) had the original members. This song came later. If you want to check out the OG Fanny, give “Hey Bulldog” a listen, or anything from those first three albums.
My Mom was pretty open to our music choices as children; we jammed off the rock aspect, my Mom broke down the lyrics and it was banned in my house! We played anyway on the sneak! Love it!😂
Great, thanks for posting. I discovered Fanny just a couple of years ago and have been nothing but impressed, especially with their live material. You need to check out their song "Blind Alley" it definitely rocks.
Thanks for playing some Fanny If you ever sample them again, may I suggest Ain’t That Peculiar. Great song . Thanks for the videos , enjoy your channel a lot.
First All Female Rock Band signed to a major label " who was also a touring band ". Love Fanny, especially their early stuff. Their original name before signing with the record label was "Wild Honey".
I'm a fan of this band and *so happy* that you're reacting to them! :-) This song was a hit, but the album it comes from, "Rock and Roll Survivors," was recorded after two of the four original members had left the band. For the *original* Fanny band, with Jean and June Millington, who are sisters, check out songs from the first four Fanny albums. "Blind Alley" *seriously* rocks! "Charity Ball" is great too! Fanny rules! :-)
I think I ran out and bought the 45 of this (single) immediately after hearing it on the radio. I loved Charity Ball too. Gonna have to dig in my vinyl pile and see if it’s still there. Haven’t heard this in decades! Every word is coming right back to me.
It's amazing someone suggested this hit. They're not well known. BUTTER BOY/Fanny charted at #29 (Billboard Hot 100) in 1975. Their only other Top 40 hit was CHARITY BALL/Fanny, which charted at #40 (Billboard Hot 100) in 1971.
Now that you've discovered Fanny, you should look into another 1970's all-female band called "Birtha".... ("Too Much Woman for a Henpecked Man" is a great song).... you can find a stellar live version on UA-cam
I know you have done Billy Ocean check out (when the going gets tough, the tough gets going) featuring Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny Devito they look like they were having fun in the video
Sad to admit that I missed out on appreciating them first time around... Even after they appeared on a Don Kirshner's Rock Concert along with Raspberries (who I keep requesting for "Overnight Sensation")... But years later, when I was hosting a '/70's show on the radio and later the internet, I loved to highlight their stuff. Though they only hit the top 40 twice in the USA (this song and "Charity Ball" (, they were very popular in concert and overseas. Original member June Millington (Jean's sister) is a dynamic guitarist who still performs to this day! (Another song to check out is "I Had A Dream Last Night")
I just listened to a couple of seconds of this. I can honestly say I never heard this before. I never heard of them either.🤷♀️ What’s up with the “hard as a rock” line in the song. LoL Oh my!! Hahaha!! This song is pretty funky.
Jean Millington was the singer who sang Butter Boy ,Great Song too .Wonderful Feeling is also a good song June wrote and sang .Look up Fannys Albums You’ll enjoy them all ,A realGem of a Rock Band ! ❤
Thanks for reacting to Fanny.. I was introduced to this band by Casey Kasem, when this song hit the American Top 40.. You must check out "Blind Alley", the Live version video.. they are great Live, you will love it!.
I remember this song from from 1975! It played often on the radio back then.I have read that Fanny band member Jean Millington, wrote "Butter Boy" song about David Bowie with whom she had an affair with. You
Fanny, is such a rocking band! I just love them. Look up, all of their stuff. The best, was from "Beat Club", a German TV show. Look, for the long video. It's totally worth it. This features saxophone. I'm not sure, who's on sax. I always, dig the keys, and the amazing harmonies in the vocals. Everyone in the group brought 🔥, when it came to instrumentation.
Got to see them live when they opened for Johnny Rivers. Almost every woman who dragged their husband there was pulling them out of the show venue. They were all braless, this was the 70's and it freaked a few oldsters out. Laughed my head off.
THANK YOU THANK YOU ! Finally someone features Fanny and maybe they can get the recognition they deserve. Next please show the Dresden Dolls featuring Amanda Palmer's dynamic duo from Boston. Try the live "Good Day " or videos of Girl Anachronism and Coin Operated Boy. Show the world how talented they were.
I am so glad you finally found them. For a more hard driving song and the original line-up, please follow up with the video labeled "Fanny - Ain't That Peculiar (1971) | LIVE", there is a slightly longer version with 1972 in the label but the diffidence is them having a false start and then dealing with a technical problem before actually playing.
Not a huge fan of this song, but Fanny - Ain't That Peculiar (1971) | LIVE & Fanny - Blind Alley (1971) | LIVE & Special Care (1971) | LIVE are all good songs, but my favorite is their cover of "Badge" by Cream
I've listened to some Fanny, but this one's new to me. A bit more pop than the stuff I'm familiar with. At some point, you really need to dive into Pretenders. Chrissie Hynde is the lead singer, songwriter and the only member to play on every album. Great stuff!
Fanny what a Great Band also listen to their song “Wonderful Feeling” . Jean Millington is the lead singer in both of these songs. Also watch their Documentary “Fanny The Right To Rock !”
Never heard of Fanny, but they’re interesting. Moving on, at this point, after presumably getting hundreds of request for Carole King, the only reason for there to be no reactions to her is that there have been but they’ve been blocked. There simply is no other excuse. I’ve said this before, but she is simply (and unarguably) the biggest female singer-songwriter of all time, rivaled only by Joni Mitchell. She cannot be ignored.
Yes she has been done. A beautiful song, she was sitting at a piano. It was blocked. Perhaps we can try another song of hers, she is suggested quite a bit. We just weren’t able to get the one song we reacted to up.
@moon lite we have reacted to her so far away video but it was blocked and removed. Sometimes it’s hard to get certain artist up due to whatever record label they are with. We will have to try again with another song and hope that it can be posted
@moon lite yes not often are they blocked and then removed. We have the same problem with The Beatles. I will write your suggestion down, perhaps with another artist with her we will have better luck getting it up.
🔥 Fanny Are On Fire 🔥 Should check out rockin' Fanny -- Fanny ~ Ain't That Peculiar Also, another powerful 70's Female Rock Singer you should check out [if ya don't know already] is Jenny Haan of the band Babe Ruth -- Babe Ruth ~ The Mexican (1972) "The Mexican" is a reworking of Ennio Morricone "Per Qualche Dollaro In Più", with Psych Rock Guitars and with Lyrics by Alan Shacklock. "The Mexican" is also considered to be one of the more influential songs for the early Hip Hop Scene, and beyond... Also... I have been waiting SO LONG for you to react to Fanny. I even emailed last year about it - which I never ask any reactors to react to anything 🤣 Please do Charity Ball, Ain’t The Peculiar, Badge or Hey Bulldog!
'Ain't that pitucular'. Another grate song from Fanny.
Who doesn't like a bit of Fanny in their lives.
This has made me so happy! Fanny need to be remembered and recognised - they have harder songs. Which I know you both like! A Fanny song every female Friday would be bad ass 🧡
One of my all-time favorite bands! The lead singer is Jean Millington. "Soul Child" is another great gem from Fanny.
There is a new documentary
(Fanny -The Right to Rock)
about this amazing band
Formed by Sisters jean and June millington
All 4 members sang
Where can i watch it link?
@@Bulshitero it came out last week on crave tv in Canada
I just read it will be released in the states June 17
Fanny -The Right to Rock
Jay, your face expression was priceless during one of the first lyrics.
A few years ago, the Millingtons and Howard-Darling formed a new band called Fanny Walked the Earth, which release one album before being sidelined by both of the Millingtons having health problems that they have been recovering from.
yes all corrrect and Patti is Suzi Quatro's sister.
These ladies were the bomb back in the day. Love Fanny!
Love it!😂
Bassist, Jean Millington, sang lead on this track. Try their cover of The Beatles, "Hey Bulldog".
Actually, Jean Millington sang lead. Though she & Nickey's voice was very similar.
Great, thanks for posting. I discovered Fanny just a couple of years ago and have been nothing but impressed, especially with their live material. You need to check out their song "Blind Alley" it definitely rocks.
Like your reactions.
Saw them in UK back in 1973 or so - Bowie was huge fan. Such a great band - do more!!!!
Before they were Wild Honey they were The Svelts.
I used to sit listening to this just to hear her say "oh butter boy" when I was a kid,I love that part of the song,I'm a long time fan of Fanny.
And their cover if, Dirty Work, is great, too.
Congrats!!! somebody I've never heard of that's really hard
I haven't heard this song in ages, but I could still sing along!
Discovered Fanny years ago and got deep into them!
Check out their live performance of their original songs "Young and Dumb" and "Blind Alley." Fire!
I just listened to a couple of seconds of this. I can honestly say I never heard this before. I never heard of them either.🤷♀️
What’s up with the “hard as a rock” line in the song. LoL Oh my!! Hahaha!! This song is pretty funky.
Jean Millington was the singer who sang Butter Boy ,Great Song too .Wonderful Feeling is also a good song June wrote and sang .Look up Fannys Albums You’ll enjoy them all ,A realGem of a Rock Band ! ❤
How did they not have bigger success? They had a great sound and they are such eye candy.
I’ve heard of them, but never heard them- thanks 🙏
I am 68 and I remember this band and I bought one of their albums.
You
Rob's face after that first line was hillarious! Not too many songs open up with "he was as hard as a rock, but I was ready to roll."
Fannys fans should call themselves the Fanny Pack lmao
Wow I'm surprised to see someone react to Fanny. I still have a 45 rpm for their song "I've Had It" which reached #79 on the Billboard tip 100
Lots of live stuff available from these chicks here on UA-cam. They kick total ass!
Got to see them live when they opened for Johnny Rivers. Almost every woman who dragged their husband there was pulling them out of the show venue. They were all braless, this was the 70's and it freaked a few oldsters out. Laughed my head off.
I didn't recognize this song title but then vaguely remembered the song when the music started. So glad you reacted to it and reminded me of it.
"Conversation with a cop" is essential. You guys would be blown away.
Crazy! Never heard of this band ever, but they sounded & seemed pretty cool! Thanks for introducing me to new music, I love it!!
♥️The old white woman
THANK YOU THANK YOU ! Finally someone features Fanny and maybe they can get the recognition they deserve. Next please show the Dresden Dolls featuring Amanda Palmer's dynamic duo from Boston. Try the live "Good Day " or videos of Girl Anachronism and Coin Operated Boy. Show the world how talented they were.
You guys really need some of their live stuff that really shows off their harder rock stuff...they are really awessome
They had some really great songs and they did some really neat covers. They also performed on the midnight special.
You MUST check out their live version of Blind Alley! It's the best thing they ever did! ua-cam.com/video/bE3uwtegPEY/v-deo.html
Fanny what a Great Band also listen to their song “Wonderful Feeling” . Jean Millington is the lead singer in both of these songs. Also watch their Documentary “Fanny The Right To Rock !”
Hey good stuff. Have you done Suzi Quatro yet? Probably the 1st female hard rocker. 48 Crash, Can the Can, Devil Gate Drive. She acted later on too.
@@RobSquadReactions Try her and NC boy James Taylor
