"Revivify Fanny. And my work will be done." - David Bowie
WORLD PREMIERE at HOT DOCS INTERNATIONAL DOCUMENTARY FESTIVAL 2021!
FANNY: The Right to Rock celebrates the untold story of one of the most important rock bands you've never heard of. Back in the 1960s, three Filipina American teenagers played together in a self-founded, 1960's Sacramento garage band... which morphed into the ferocious rock group Fanny, the first band of women to release an LP with a major label (Warner/Reprise, 1970). Despite releasing five critically acclaimed albums, counting David Bowie as one of their most vocal fans, Fanny's groundbreaking impact in music has been lost in the mists of time... until bandmates reunite 50 years later with a new rock record deal and chance to right the wrongs of music history. Also features music icons Joe Elliott, Bonnie Raitt, Todd Rundgren, Kathy Valentine, Kate Pierson, John Sebastian, Cherie Currie, Charles Neville, Gail Ann Dorsey, Earl Slick and Jeff "Skunk" Baxter. Photography Credits: Linda Wolf, Marita Madeloni, Sherry Rayn Barnett. #GetBehindFanny #GetBehindFannyPodcast www.fannythemovie.com

I saw them in 1974 at Newcastle Odeon (UK) when they supported Jethro Tull. I had seen them on TV but no-one had any idea they were the support band as it had not been publicised anywhere. I've always thought it was a deliberate move as female bands were very rare. They came on to an unlit stage wearing black hooded cloaks playing some good strong licks then the cloaks were ripped off as the lights flashed on and 'boom' they had everyone's attention. I remember the power went down early in the set and the drummer (Alice de Buhr?) carried on with an impromptu 20-30min solo while roadies with torches ferreted around in the dark. It was a memorable night for a 17yr old.

@@alicedebuhr6457 Hey Alice! This is cool!
I first saw one of your videos about a year ago. I thought you all sounded amazing, but your wardrobe was a little out of style... until I realized it was a rehearsal film from '70 or '71. I couldn't believe that sound was coming from a band I'd never heard of. No disrespect intended... I was born in '67... but its pretty clear that you ladies never got the credit you deserved. I'm glad that some of the great female bands that followed recognize the doors you helped open for them.
With any luck the documentary will open some new eyes as to how great Fanny was. I didn't see Nickey in the clip, so hopefully she's doing well and was able to participate in some way. I hope the film does well for all of you.

@@t.sewell1513 Liked for the good conversation, but of course, I disagree.
We know that politics and money is involved with the RRHofF. Consider all of the artists both male and female who have never performed rock and roll but who have been inducted. It is actually a popular music hall of fame based on record sales etc. And even then popularity is not enough. Consider the number of artists who had to wait years to be inducted or who still haven't even been nominated.
The Beat Club clip, along with some of the clips of their live performances illustrate how good they were. They should have gotten in before Joan Jett and they should have been nominated before the Go Go's. Consider the era they came up in. Consider how they might have fared with MTV to assist in promoting them.
I think that the RRHoF is anti-rock and roll, but as long as there is one, Fanny should be in it.

Gary Jackson Fanny was selling musicianship, while The Runaways were selling sex appeal (Cherie Currie onstage in a negligee) over musicianship (they WERE competent musicians, just not as highly skilled types of which Fanny were in my opinion,) and the GoGos were selling pop hits and looks (even though they were terrors on the road which their “cuteness” hid.) Fanny simply did not create an image to sell (and they should not have had to.) Unfortunately in the music industry image can trump talent.

I adored the Fanny albums, and have all of them on vinyl. I never got a chance to see them live, which I regret, because all accounts said they put on a great show. I never understood why they didn't break through and become superstars,, but tip my hat in respect to Reprise for keeping them on the label and releasing their LPs. Things were different then, and labels believed in developing artists. Now, if your first release doesn't climb the Billboard charts like a rocket, you're gone. (And if it _does_ chart, whether it's any _good_ is a happy side effect. Crap sells, and that we get good music at all is a minor miracle.

@@alicedebuhr6457 Thanks, Alice. Nice to hear back from one of the band. A lot of bands were in the same position. Talent out the wazoo, but how did you _market_ them? The traditional approach was to try to get a hit single that would go into heavy rotation on the Top 40 AM stations. There _were_ occasional successes, like Cream's _Sunshine of Your Love_ , but you had to have a song you could _fit_ into a 2-3 minute 45rpm single format, and even if you did, it was still a crap shoot as to whether it would chart. Too many wonderful bands did work that _couldn't_ be cut and shoehorned to single length. I started paying attention to pop during the period when the market was changing, and the product wasn't the hit single by a pop singer, it was the _band_ , writing and playing their own music. It was also the days of FM "Underground" radio, because FM could be broadcast in _stereo_ . The AM stations all got FM bands as part of their license, but hadn't had a use for them. Now they did, and they were all making it up as they went along trying to figure out how to use the new medium. Like I said, props to Reprise for believing in your talent, and releasing 4 of your albums. Yes, it would have cost them bucks to drop you, but they signed you in the first place _because_ they believed in you, and kept releasing you because they believed in you. The belief by a label in the artists it signs is what I miss.

Wooo! I ran into the band's video footage early this year while surfing youtube. I was blown away, what a great discovery! I hope the band will get more recognition for their pioneering work and for paving the way, influencing so many other musicians. Can't wait to see the doc!

@@alicedebuhr6457 Thank you for the message Alice - we are all getting to be old buggers now but I will never forget that Saturday night in Bradford here in the UK, first thing Monday morning I went straight to the record shop and ordered a copy of the album, terrific days, I got married in '75 had 2 wonderful girls but unfortunately lost my wife 6 years ago, reading this Fanny post brought back all the good times and a tear to my eye - thanks for the memories.Richard.

I love this band so check out 'Los Bitchos' in the UK - They remind me of Fanny. I hope the Fanny pianist/keyboardist is involved too, as they were so cool together.
