As the defence matrix had stated in an earlier podcast that mig-29 of iaf/indian navy have the highest thrust to weight ratio and also higher flight ceiling in indian armed forces the addition of these engines could improve these chararatestics even further especially when operating above mountainous terrains of Pakistan/china border. .
They are pushing these updates to keep them relevant for next 10 years .
India is going to use them on its air.craft carrier . Rafel m is going to take some time .

After conflict with china mig 29 of navy were deployed in laddakh region where air is very thin. Due to its higher thrust/weight ratio, its performance with higher payload were the best. May be engines are being changed mainly for that reason.

@@sigma-sigma1 Not sure of that. Mig 29UPG, which are the derivatives of the original Mig-29, has less than 4 Ton weapon capability even at best condition. So, even it's higher capacity is way lower than what Chinese Flankers can carry at that altitude. And that whole concept that the height of Ladakh can cause serious thrust issue in jet aircrafts, is a madeup thing by these Indian Defence Channels to exaggarate our outdated platform's validity. For a min, think logically. Most of the Fighter jets fly over 30,000 ft, (over 40,000 ft most of the time) even during patrolling and still can carry full payload without any performance hamper. if you have seen any GS videos or watched any Documentories, you'll find that to be true. Ladakh has maximum height of 6,153 meter or 20,187 ft. Literally every fighter jet built in last 40 years flies over that all the time with full payload, to avoid high air density. So, why do you think that is gonna be a problem? The issue happens with Rotor crafts like Helicopters which lose their carrying capacity due to poor density. These Indian channels took that and somehow managed to create a weired logic for Fighter jets. Fighter jet Engines are developed to be operated at very high altitude and for having thrust related problems, they have to extremely high, over 50,000 ft.

Army/capf should reduce its numbers first and speed up modernization of infantry with latest equipment and drones/satellites are most important.
Well i do disagree with you here. This upgrade might have been planned for high altitude takeoff operations which came in considerations after LAC standoff with China. As we know Mig 29 are extensively used for survillance on LAC right now, this upgrade might have been planned for that.
And they were not being considered before? You want to say that, IAF didn't even considered a possible conflict with China while preparing their security roadmap? That's still being incompetent, No?

@@DefenceMatrix you just told this deal was finalized in 2011, if they can spend $50 million per aircraft for Mirage 2000I at the same time, no big deal they made these choices. It was congress rule n they can get anything done for their cuts.

It would leave them with spare engines, which are not going waste but will come handy during war, when usage is intensive and you will need new engines then which can't come at short notice.
I think we should go for Kaveri engine for Mig 29 given it's twin engine aircraft

Mig29 is no doubt good aircraft but it seriously lacks the latest avionics, EW suite & other latest techs like Rafales. Todays warfare is changed & now we need to change. Best example is Gripen latest version it has mastered modern tech & avionics and is at par with the likes of Rafales & Typgoons despite of being light weight.
India Army and IAF ka kuch ho skta hai toh sirf theatre command and Joint Task Force hi kr skti hai. Where procurement and planning done by Joint task force and theatre command head as per their regional systems and sub-systems requiremnt. Coast line and shore based command NAVY ko dedo. Tabhi kuch ho skta hai warna IAF and IA banta dhaar kara dengi

The RD-33-3 engines still have service life left. They will be kept as backup and replaced with RD-33-MK engines in the planes. It is not correct to say RD-33-3 did not have a long life. RD-33-MK was not acquired earlier because nobody knew how good they were. It is easy to criticize after the fact.
Engine upgrade might be needed for AESA radars... With better range radar and ASTRA mig 29 would become perform than Pakistani f16's and j10's

Second before 2019 we only looking fafg project after Late Parrikar sir left this project save money invested after 2019 in Amca. More things past HAL & Ada & DRDO attitude.
