Don't know what the top brass of IAF thinks but at present moment Tejas MK 1A is a saviour of IAF, in every way it is modern, safer, and better than Mig-21 in modern times(not discrediting it but it's just an old machine), firstly it is indigenous, better engine, better availability, better range, better avionics, better weapons payload, etc...IAF needs to place more orders for Tejas MK1A...numbers matter.

This is exactly why upgrading the SU-30MKI fleet to the maximum is extremely important. China is going to deploy a massive fleet of flankers against us. The Mk1A will be as important as the Rafale, albeit with very different objective.. what happened in 2019, will be the nature of most conflicts we’ll engage in.. in addition, 500 kms range is excellent for point defence, especially scrambling roles at border airfields..

Intended to be a point defence jet...but the kind of capability it brings ..it will be a superb multirole fighter with limited range/endurance ....IMO it should be deployed on Pakistan bordering airbases like Srinagar whose distance from Islamabad is less than 200km then it can definitely prove it be more than a match for any jet currently in Pak inventory....near LAC we can deploy for interception and air patrol....this goes very well in line with NWNP doctrine of IAF

Combat RADIUS is wrongly mentioned as combat RANGE. Tejas's combat RADIUS on internal fuel is 500 kms with 2 kgs payload(approx).
Means it can travel 500 kms, complete its mission and come back to base, on internal fuel.
Combat RADIUS can increase or decrease depending on mission. If Tejas mk1A carries its complete 4 tons of weapons and have to go for lo-lo operation, its combat RADIUS will come down to 300 kms.
If it carries 2 Drop tanks and 2 tons weapons payload, its combat RADIUS can go upto 800 kms.
Its ferry range on internal is around 1700 kms. Means it can go from point A to point B with no weapons payload and can cover 1700 kms+ in suitable flight conditions.
Its Ferry range with 3 x drop tanks is around 2500 kms+.

Do people think that if you place a SAM somewhere, the area is automatically out of bounds for the enemy?
Do you know that SAMs aren't switched on 24/7? Because doing that will just get your SAMs detected by the enemy and there'll soon be an anti-radiation missile or a drone barrelling towards you, taking out your entire prized SAM system.

I guess a payload combination of 1 Fuel Tank (Center line tank- 850 L) along with 4 BVR & 2 WVR would be ideal for Tejas. The 8th pylon to be used for external Self Protection Jammer since in Modern Warfare, EW plays a major role, so Tejas needs to protect itself in a Jamming environment.
If Dual Rack pylons are used for WVR, then even better. It will increase the payload to 4 BVR & 4 WVR.
This way Tejas will get a Combat Range of around 750 kms which would be enough for a Point (or Area) Defence Fighter as well as retain it's combat skills enough to deter the enemy till further aid comes in the form of Rafale, Su 30MKI & Mig 29UPG.

In Balakot type strike, it still wont need a drop tank either

When you have found that there is an issue to be fixed, you will have to fix, otherwise why do we need the Mk-1A. The same holds good for every other industry for that matter, We have seen many single engine fighters, I agree we have built Tejas from the scratch, but we cant stop fixing small small things.
