    It's common in India, we demand 7th gen technology at 4th gen price. But if it is imported then we can pay Double. And not last minute in last second we demand changes so that we can create room for foreign vendor. I support HAL , DRDO, .......

    I think it is good that GE delay is good for India. Cryogenic engine related restrictions led to INDIA building its own engine. GE delay will pave the way for AMCA & TEDBF.

    I have always criticized HAL but I don't think HAL is at fault this time.. HAL is doing great with software updates and engine availability

      Engine is developed by GTRE (DRDO) and will have to be produced in a factory rather than converting GTRE to a factory. HAL (its both Engine divisions, one at Bengaluru and the other at Sunabeda, Odisha) have been making/manufacturing/producing Engines, tailor-made (& associated with) to their particular aircraft like various Western brands or MiG21/Su3 "under license" from the design and manufacturing "drawings", supplied by those original designers (design firms). HAL produced/made that way, thousands of engines over the last half a century, at least. In India, "manufacturing" engines is a continuous saga. But I must first find an engine "design". In due course that time, "GTRE" can be that time-tested "designer", & HAL the manufacturer; I hope. That is the procedure.
      I am making efforts to explain as to how an (Aero) gets delivered to be fitted to a "particular" fighter jet aircraft.
      As there were no "Aircraft"designers in India, HAL had to don the cap of "designer" (here is a huge deign bureau) to meet the requirements that can't avoided. ADA is the first fully0uathenticated "desugn bureau (on par with Mikoyan-Gurevich - MiG, Sukoi-Su, Antonov-An, Tupolev-Tu or whatever). Yet, HAL can't "design" an engine and it is impossible to make/manufacture/produce an engine, without a design document set.

    किसी को ये नहीं पता है कि IAF ने कब-कब क्या-2 Changes demand किए हैं। ये भी संभव है कि Engine की सप्लाई में Delay का पता लगने के बाद IAF ने बाद में कुछ और भी Changes demand कर दिए हों जिस वजह से delivery time line बदली है। जब पहली बार कोई चीज बनाते हैं तो पता नहीं होता है कि कितना समय लगेगा; और वह भी तब जब कि बाद में उसमें कुछ Changes demand कर दिए गए हों। अगर Delay HAL की गलती की वजह से होती तो IAF officially ये बात बोलती।

    If we invest 5 - 10 billion dollars in the next 10 years for kaveri engine we can develop a engine with a thrust of 90 kn before 2030 and develop an another variant of 110 kn before 2035 so that we can be self reliant in engine technology.

    For short/immediate solution one could use ge-404 engines , but for long term solution one needs to improve, upgrade the kaveri engines and install it in tejas-mark1a as tejas mark-1a is going to be the ' future work horse" Of 'combat fleet of Iaf.

    Kaveri engine project was as precious as Brahmos project. If we can develop worlds most powerful missiles, then we can also develop jet engines. DRDO needs time for development, but kaveri project was sent back to cold box many times. Its high time our government should start investment in R&D rather than depending on west 😊

      One of my nephews is a M.Tech. in Mech. Engineering. His thesis was "computational hydrodynamics" (Aerodynamics is a variant of Hydro dynamics). The topic can be extremely useful in the complexities of design for Jet (Gas turbine) engine. I suggested he join GTRE (one needs to compete, prove his qualifications, to be in it). He ignored it & went to America. Now he is earning a fat salary (in Silicon Valley - San Jose). But more than that, he is excited about his work- the opportunities offered in innovation and an all-appreciative customer-base that doesn't want him to leave America. Can we replicate them here?

There may indeed be opportunities in America, but a true patriot would choose to work for their own country, irrespective of the level of appreciation received. However, It's NOT that they won't be appreciated or recognized at all for making breakthroughs for India, but it's true that they may not be paid as much. So, the issue is more about compensation than appreciation. Ultimately, not everyone can be like Bhabha or Abdul Kalam, who prioritized India's greatness over financial rewards.

      Allow me to offer explanations, before painting the public sector with a black brush.
      At the time of independence, there was no money neither with the government nor the public. Being the one with lot more money the Union government had to embark on "industrialisation" as a welfare measure & as service to the citizens, which precludes "profit". That was the flaw.
      With poor marks in Science there was no chance of entrepreneur scientists like Bell, Edison or Tesla (besides strong societal reasons). Most investors are (petty) traders from whom you can't expect to industrialise the country. Only patriotism can't industrise (as events proved). The only +point was Lalchand Hirachand. During WW II, when there was a need to overhaul allied military aircraft he opened a factory at Bengaluru (HAL). Not only that, he pioneered ship-building at Visakhapattanam, as well as a car factory (with Italian FIAT Technology). As trading offered safe & huge profits (huge population) none went into production. It was the bane & Union government was forced to do that job. India failed to invent anything fro 4 centuries(inventions spur industrialisation). Even now Indian industry wants to play safe & isn't adventurous with capital & money. It discouraged foreign investment & new Technology that India will suffer industrially. Thus We were saddled with Ambassador till Sanjay Gandhi saved the country with Suzuki-Maruti & everything changed. In a "sheltered" market producing shoddy goods the local entrepreneurial class was thriving in the name of protection of Indian industries (from quality imports). That shut off infusion of Technology into India. Quality was denied to us.
      Indian scientists need an opportunity that ISRO provides. DRDO is no less, being constrained to produce only for "Defence". Rocket Science is simpler than the design of aircraft jet engine (People don't know the difference between design & "making" or if "design" is needed at all; For manufacture, design is a must) Investing more on R&D encourages them that neither Union government nor private sector does. It tuns them to scientist-entrepreneurs. Even now that is the big question mark (private sector never buys losing businesses to turn them around). L- H's HAL was nationalised for making fighter aircraft for Defence. Tata Air India as well as all banks were nationalised to provide employment for a starving nation . Situation is much different now.
      Remember: If private industry doesn't do, it forces public sector to take up that part of industrialisation. It is the Union government that ultimately takes over losing companies (where there is no adequate profit margin) & foots the bill for the good of the country.

      I don't subscribe to your empty sloaganeering. It doesn't do any good to the person nor the country. It is a fact, not what you have us believe. Desh bhakti should takes into account Bhukti too. All greatest Indian Nobel laureates (South Indians CV Raman & Ramanujan are exceptions) have made discoveries there, that they wouldn't have if here. Scientists need to work in a Scientific environment where the mind grows to the challenge of new ideas & adventures & not Andha Vishwas. That Euphoria & adulation felt on a new discovery, you can't even imagine in your wildest dreams. You think it is "money". A poor scientist will have to stand in the ration queue all the time. Where is the time nor resources for him for scientific pursuit? Take it from me- there isn't the environment nor challenge in the country. Many who returned have almost starved & couldn't go back as those positions were occupied. Almost all Scientists aren't "discovering" anything but are engaged in running Scientific establishments with lesser & lesser time devoted to Scientific pursuit. Full time scientific pursuit is like a "Tapas". Einstein was without a job for a decade. Ramanujan was a clerk in a godown ! CV Raman was a civil servant (Asst Auditor & Accountant general)to feed himself &family . Another niece of mine, with a PG (IIT) in Metallurgy is now Asst. AG like CV Raman. The country can progress with more Metallurgists (mainly for developing Kaveri Engine). If we were that sound in Science & technology we'd have taken the right decisions way back in 1980s & the country would be producing Electronic "chips" like PRC. I can show you a dozen more failures.
      Please, for heaven's sake don't preach me patriotism. That way, you suspect patriotic credentials of me (you don't know anything about me) & that is an insult. Preach elsewhere. There are enough number of crores of people for your target audience.

      Not possible to midway switch engines from A to B.
      The airworthiness certification 📜 takes a long time with many tests to verify the overall system.
      They really need to speed up the Kaveri program as that is the only thing that Tejas can rely on.

      I don't know who the makers are. It will take years to sub-contract them, to develop a test plane after modifications to the structure to accommodate the new engine,test it for performance, get acceptance from IAF-- it will also represent substantial; costs and time.Will IAF agree to bear this? I think not.And then the maker nation may fall out later with India and you have to go through all this again.
      We tend to blindly blame USA and its so-called ill-will.Having worked with American companies I know they are very strong on contractual obligations. Was there any default on the Indian side?We don't know all the facts.
      The point being- this is a fault in project management; either HAL or perhaps HA+IAF are responsible . The project manger must take the project forward.It is impossible to change aircraft engines at the drop of a hat.

Make a complex engineering project sometimes can delay things. 14 years no funding for kaveri can we blame HAL or IAF for that. IAF is asking for changes before production rollout is it professionalism? HAL assemble parts. Where are the parts? Arrange parts then ask questions. Or HAL deliver aircrafts with spare engines.

    Kaveri is not operational- we don't know it's reliability. Reliability will only be established when the engines are used at scale. kaveri is a not starter and at least 10 years away if we give the funds, we need the engines today.

      Engine development is a continuous ongoing process - all over the world. Even after a particular design is delivered to the manufacturer for production (with a "type" number) it is continually being upgraded with small innovations. The process goes on till another engine design is evolved and so on. It happens all over the world (wherever Engines are designed & developed).

    HAL has to be radically improved, quality and caliber of employees, infrastructure, modern sales and public relations etc etc. Govt has to do it, it is the biggest stakeholder.

    The GTRE GTX 37-14 UB engine variant in which 89KN thrust was achieved by GTRE shows that GTRE already has developed an engine with ...more than the required thrust-89KN needed for the MK1A. It had a higher bypass ratio as opposed to the current VS variant. Frontal Dia was higher than reqd. So it's just a matter of time that GTRE delivers

    Even if under-powered, "Kaveri" engine is better, dependable and possibly durable than an unpredictable, though very fine F404 engine with many political strings attached. In due course with continual development we can achieve the better specifications that we aim at.
    Once we mastered the engine Technology (as we did by now, I hope) in strategic Defence matters never ever depend on an uncertain "friend".

    Question is if we can't make these state of the art equipments why we are funding millions in our IITs and NITs only for the top students to leave India.
    Why not make it mandatory for graduates from these institutions a 5 years mandatory Job / internship at Indian company in India.

    Procurement agreement between HAL & GE, as well as between HAL and IAF were signed over what basis? Timelines weren't discussed between these organisations?

    One thing you are not accurate in this video is that DFCC is not something which remains the same from the start, software changes in DFCC are done sometimes during an aircrafts lifespan...maybe they did some changes in the DFCC software which caused the delay in DFCC flying on Mk-1A...

    What are these changes demanded by IAF? Are they really serious about the indigenous efforts? Their motive is doubtful as now demanding some modifications after accepting and placing an order. Improvements can be a continuous exercise. But if IAF is demanding some changes, such people should be looked suspicious and govt should keep an eye on them and their activities!

    महोदय मल्टी स्टेज कि पंख हैं बहोत छोटा है उसमे इतनी ताकत आधा कट जाती है और कितना मल्टी स्टेज में पंख के बदले धातु रहेगा उतना वजन बढ़ेगा और जितना वजन बढ़ा उतना थ्रस्ट कम मिलेगा और इसकी ताकत पंखों में रहती हैं तो डाया में बीस प्रतिशत छोटा पंख क्यो किया है सभी रेलवे स्टेशन में बडा पंखा लगाया है उसने लिमिट के हिसाबसे स्लो में पुरे का पूरा हवा फेकता हैं अभि उसमे स्टील लगके पंखको बीस प्रतिशत रखे तो हवा कितनी कम होगी और वजन भी बढ़ेगा फाइटर जेट इंजन में जीतना पंख हल्का रहेगा वजन कामी रहें तो थ्रस्ट बढ़ेगा अभी उसमे पूरा एअर ब्लॉक होजाता हैं तो थ्रस्ट कैसे बढ़ेगा फ्यूल के साथ एयर वजन भी महत्व होता है

    Somehow, either somebody from defence ministry or armed forces or both of them 5:48 are responsible for such things in my opinion. I may be totally wrong in my , not wrong in coming to such a conclusion because when it comes to any equipment made in India, the "SO CALLED" testing goes on & on & on. That's why it creates a doubt in our minds about the real intentions. Striker, ATAGS etc. are some of the examples I can think of at the moment

    If you spread the area of your analysis further wide you may find that no one entity alone is responsible for this dire situation. Fault lies with every concerned departments. Were we not aware that our only & most crucial fighter programme that is Tejas which will replace the 60 years old design Mig 21.Is it not known to us that 1) the main road block to the importation of foreign fighter jets are Tejas MK IA & at later stage Tejas Mk II, AMCA thus it is enemy to the foreign fighter manufacturers business.2) road block to cut money.
    3) Knowing to the factor of reliance over US why we have not explore the mechanism to develop of parallel engine programme with Safran or others along with GTRE kaveri engine?
    If the earlier Govt. have supported the Kaveri Engine programme, all out like other countries did for successful development, with proper fund & other required support then we could have got Kaveri engine 10-12 years back and could have get other indigenous higher thrust engines by now. On the contrary they ordered to pack up Kaveri programme. So responsibility is collective.
