- Here's a quick tutorial of how to create a perfect diagonal seam to finish your quilt binding by machine. No math required! Be sure to open the end piece you cut off.
Works every time, but I have to watch and have you telling me step by step. Thank you.
Becky, I realize this is one of your older videos, but I’d like to thank you for sharing your binding method. Ending the binding on my quilts have been my big “bug-a-boo” until I ran across you explaining your method. I’m always amazed how easy it is to do with you sitting next to me on my trusty iPad taking me step by step along the process. Thanks
I FINALLY get how to join the binding ends. “Turn the right hand piece towards you 180 degrees.” I have fiddled for hours over the quilts I’ve finished until I unintentionally turned it correctly. I have sewn that diagonal line so many times to the wrong side. Thank you for taking the time to make this teaching video. I like the 12” opening and 10” tails and the snip off the end of the left piece as a cutting measure. My dear, you are a sewing engineer. I should have guessed from the title, “Power Tools With Thread.” Thank you, again!

Wanted to let you know Becky that yesterday I used your binding method tip for joining the two ends together. Instead of measuring the binding width which I've always done, I used your method to cut off a piece of the binding and open it up to determine the overlap. My binding came out terrific thanks to you and your great tip!

I overlap the last side and measure from the underneath edge to the top overlapped piece to what ever the width of cut binding is I'm using - say 2 1/2 wide b efore folding, then you measure 2 1/2 from lower cut edge to cut the top one 2 l/2" away from it. Join cross wise as you did. the key is in cutting the overlap the same length as the binding strip cut width. love chris Hunt, North Wakes UK

Thx. I was sewing it all back to front and having to unpick a dozen times... i had the cutting bizzo sorted but always sewed diagnonal upside down and round about so thx for your "facing" and "180" comment... finally finished my binding now.

Two tips for your awesome video
1. Turn the piece you trimmed off over. Or upside down! Using the back of your fabric, because it looks white, is easier for your viewers to see it and its length 2” or 2.5” what ever it is, because it is camouflaged with the quilts fabric because the binding and quilt fabric . Are the same it’s hard to see or tell what your doing.... if you don’t turn it over, very hard to see it when it’s the same color so turning it over makes it easier for your viewers to see it..... I doo this when I show others because of how the brain works. The eye can see the actual cut piece if it’s a contrasting.color.
2. After you have drawn and pined it you should always always always open it up to make sure it was turned correctly after it’s pinned. Do this before you stitch it.... by opening it up and looking at it and making sure it’s right you’re viewers will be able to see what it is SUPPOSE to look like, if they open theirs up and it doesn’t look like yours did when you opened it up to show them then they will know it’s wrong BEFORE they sewing, and if you don’t show them they may have turned the fabric wrong, stitched it wrong and will have to rip it out....if you would open it up to show a miter with it all laying flat, they won’t know it’s correct.
because you didn’t show them how to “check it”, so they don’t check it and then your viewers get upset if they did it wrong... you of course need to show them the correct places to pin it so you can open it before you sew it, but that is easy to do...
I just wanted to share those tips because when I show this to gals that just can’t get their minds wrapped around it they are so excited to see it opened up and laying flat and fitting perfectly “before” they stitch it so they don’t have to un stitch it...

Thank you for making this video. I have struggled with this forever. I always have to redo it usually. I flip the fabric the wrong way or get it too loose or too tight..or sew the diagonal the wrong way. I have done it all...lol.

Hi if you make your joining cut just a bit more like 1/8 or 1/4 inch make more so your tail is less.It makes your binding a bit tight but you won’t have a crease at the end. So if your binding is 2 1/2 make your cut at at 2 3/4 wide. Hope this makes sense
Yes, I completely understand. However, how you hold your hands on the fabric and binding (thumb under-fingers on top) prevents the feed dogs from pulling the quilt faster than the binding and you won't get the crease. I didn't hold mine quite tight enough in the demo, but was able to work out that tiny bubble at the end. If you don't use that method to hold the binding, then making the cut a tiny bit more, alleviates the crease but does make the binding a bit more tight.
Great tutorial...I finish my binding the same way...except I leave about 1/4 gap so I don't get any bunching.
