I grew up watching this movie in the late 70's-early 80's on local television and have it on dvd for several years. To me it holds up, as one of those many revisionist films of this period where entire genres were being defined. The acting is extremely good and while the plot is pretty simple, the writing and direction make it work.
HI Shadowman and welcome. As you probably know the special edition DVD relates the story of how Aldrich would be nominated for Best director IF he cut the whole sequence with the air vents snd the nazis below. As harrowing as that sequence is to some I don't think the movie would have worked without it.
The first half of this movie is amazing - the hanging, the briefing, introduction to the convicts and the interviews, the training - the actual attack seems almost anti-climatic.
Actually the Capitol WAS an old time movie palace but got modernized a few short years before as a CINERAMA theatre, although not true three projector Cinerama. Still it was a great space very similar inside to the Cinerama Dome on Sunset.

Savalas did a good job!
Sure did. Loved him as Blofeld in OHMSS as well. Also The Assassination Bureau.
Wow, you got to see it at the time at one of them old time movie palaces. That’s good fortune.
