    Open both bottom vents and top vents. Add 1kg of chemical free lump charcoals into your Kamado Jan. Remove the divide and conquer from your Kamado Jan. Light your firelighter and add it to the charcoal. Leave your Kamado Jan lid open for 5 minutes to make sure your charcoal is burning. When the charcoal is burning close the Kamado Jan lid, so that the Kamado Jan can get warm. See how the Kamado Jan is getting warm with the temperature gauge. Take a big plastic container and fill it up with water. Add two tablespoons of dishwashing liquid with the water. Add both sets of grills with the divide and conquer into the water to soak. Slowly you will see that the Kamado Jan temperature is rising. Add clean water without any chemicals into your wash basin. Add the 2 deflector plates into the water to soak. Use a Scotchbrite to wipe the deflector plates clean. Clean the deflector plates on both sides. Rinse the deflector plates with new clean water. Remember to clean the washing basin after you are finished, otherwise the misses will punish you. Let the deflector plates get dry in the sun. The Kamado Jan will reach temperature up to 420 degrees Celsius of heat. Starts to clean your grills and the divide and conquer in the dishwashing water. Scrub them with your Scotchbrite till clean and looking new again. Remember after you clean the grills and the divide and conquer rinse them off with clean water. Remember you are only allowed to use chemical products on the grills and the divide and conquer to clean on your Kamado Jan. The rest of the ceramic parts on the Kamado Jan must use chemical free products like water only. If the grills and the divide and conquer isn’t clean add them back to the plastic container with the dishwashing liquid and let them soak further. The Kamado Jan will burn for 5 hours at 420 degrees Celsius of heat. Let the Kamado Jan cool down before you remove any ceramic parts from the Kamado Jan. I let my Kamado Jan cool down over-night. First remove the fire ring, secondly remove the charcoal grate, and lastly remove the fire box. Put them aside to get washed in water only. Open both bottom vents and sweep the ash from your Kamado Jan. Remember to clean the bottom vent rail as well to make it easier to use the next time you are braai-ing. Add the fire ring into the plastic container with water only. Use your Scotchbrite and clean the fire ring. Remove any particles which was burnt onto the fire ring with the Scotchbrite. Clean the fire ring top side bottom side, inside and outside with the water. Do the same to the firebox in the plastic container with clean water. Scrub the charcoal grate also with the clean water and Scotchbrite top side and bottom side. Left the fire ring and firebox in the sun for at least 4 hours and make sure they are dry before you add them back to the Kamado Jan. Wipe the Kamado Jan clean with the water and the Scotchbrite to remove all the soot built up, bottom part and top part. After the Kamado Jan and the fire ring and firebox is dry start to re-assemble your Kamado Jan. First add the firebox back to your Kamado Jan. Make sure that the firebox air vent is lining up with the bottom vent of your Kamado Jan. Add the fire ring on top of the firebox. Add your clean divide and conquer on top of the fire ring. Add your deflector plates on the divide and conquer. Add your grills above the deflector plates. Close and store.

      ​@@JoburgBraai if you burn at enough heat you even need to remove the heat gauge , and after some time the ceramic becomes white again yours still black
