Yup...David Lindley was a multi-instrumentalist who played fiddle, guitars, and pretty much any stringed instrument you could come up with...He and Jackson were lifelong friends and he was a big part of Jackson's sound for many of his earlier albums. He also had a number of his own albums...supremely talented - RIP.
@@RandyHall324 Pretty sure he mastered like over 100 stringed instruments or something crazy like that, had the good fortune of seeing David in a small club with about 50 people about 15 years ago, ended up with a signed set list, such an amazing artist!
When I was ten in 1977, my parents bought a Best of Frankie Valley and the Four Seasons 8 track that we played to death. "Stay" was on it; when I heard Loadout/Stay on the radio over twenty years later, I thought Frankie Valley had a walk-on!
David Lindley is one of my favorite parts, its silly, but every time i watch this, i watch him, in the dark of the stage, carefully put his steel on his chair and walk in the dark of the stage to the back up mic, sing the falsetto, and walk back in the dark to his steel. You can see him, if you watch for him.
The woman with the wonderful and powerful voice was Rosemary Butler. The guy playing the lap steel and singing the falsetto was David Lindley, a total master of things with strings. Load Out is a Jackson Browne composition. The transition between the two songs is spectacular. Stay is a Jackson Browne adaptation of a 1960 song by Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs. It's been covered by multiple artists. JB had a ton of awesome, still popular, songs.
"Stay" is doo-wop!!!written by Maurice Williams performed by Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs. the Four Seasons version really hits the falsetto hard in their version of this. That’s my favorite version So this is Jb’s homage to that sound.
Jackson Browne is a class act! He’s a huge collaborative writer as well and you’ve probably heard his songs sung by other artists such as the Eagles. Check out his “ Doctor My Eyes” and “ Running on Empty “ . The female singer is the great Rosemary Butler who is a fantastic singer and on many artists’ backing vocals. The second singer(male) was indeed the late, great David Lindley who was playing the slide guitar. Jackson Browne didn’t write “Stay”, but he got permission to alter some lyrics for his use in this medley.
David Lindley on Slide and please don't forget the amazing Leland Sklar on bass.He is one of my bass heroes.Stay written by Maurice Williams of Zodiacs fame.Just one of the best live performances.Thank you for the reaction. From Perth Western Australia.
Jackson Browne started his career writing songs for other artists such as the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (he was briefly a member in 1966) & the Eagles (Browne co-wrote "Take It Easy"). But in the 70's he started recording his own songs. He had a lot of hits 70's-80's such as "Doctor, My Eyes", "Rock Me on the Water", "Here Come Those Tears Again", "The Pretender", "Running on Empty", "Somebody's Baby", "Tender Is The Night" etc.
Don't forget "These Days" that he wrote when he was 14! Listen to those lyrics, and you can't conceive of them coming out of the head of a 14 year old!..Gregg Allman's version is the best, imho..Even JB said Gregg took it, and made it his own.
Great performance. Jackson Browne knows how to rock. What a finale. It is one of those performances that you can hear again and again and never tire of.
I’m so glad I grew up during this time. Musicians cared about the music so much. Yes of course the money was important but the music was number one. I don’t think musicians nowadays play from their heart and soul like they did at this time. Hell, I remember going to concerts for $7 and having great seats . Nowadays, it’s all about money, how many lights they can flash in your face and how autotune can make everyone sound perfect. These days are gone for sure, but as long as we have videos like this, they will live on forever.
Me too!. Lived between 3 College towns. Someone was playing every weekend. Duke, Carolina, NC State. If they had nothing we drove to Greensboro! So many great bands!!!!
The man with the high voice was David Lindley. David Perry Lindley (March 21, 1944 - March 3, 2023) was an American musician who founded the rock band El Rayo-X and worked with many other performers including Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, Ry Cooder, Bonnie Raitt, Warren Zevon, Curtis Mayfield and Dolly Parton. He mastered such a wide variety of instruments that Acoustic Guitar magazine referred to him not as a multi-instrumentalist but instead as a "maxi-instrumentalist."
David Lindley played the Lap Steel on a lot of JB's albums in from the mid-70's -early 80's. He could play anything that had strings on it brilliantly. He had a big hit of his own in the 80's with his band, El Rayo X and the song Mercury Blues. The falsetto chorus here is an homage to Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs who released Stay in the early 60's. They and subsequent cover bands almost always performed it with the falsetto voice in the chorus. On the liner notes to Running On Empty (on which this song appeared) they acknowledge Maurice's approval to use the song, saying simply "the Zodiacs don't mind." Running on Empty was an album dedicated to life on the road for a rock band in the 70's in that most of the songs were written around this theme, and most of the music was recorded live on stage. The stuff not recorded on stage was recorded on the road (on the Pretender Tour) backstage, in hotel rooms, and even on a bus in transit. The Load-Out/Stay was the closer on the album.
This was the final song in the set when I saw him at Austin Aqua festival. What a beautiful tribute. The anticipatory build-up is magical. The crowd was electric.
Not one song from this album (Running on Empty) was recorded in studio. They were all done live on stage, or in a motel room or on the tour bus. One of my favorite albums all time.
Bob Seger's Live Bullet was done the same way. He recorded the entire album at Detroit's COBO Hall over a two day concert series. So good! That was when musicians had to have tremendous talent. Not so much for most musicians today.
You already got more info than I could've given you. I learned a lot myself. I only heard this tune on the radio and poss some films. The radio version is also live so Idk if there's an actual studio version available or he just did it live. AN AMAZING PERFORMANCE by all. I'm just like your dad. That's the funnest part to sing!!🤣🤣🤣
There isn’t a studio version. Jackson recorded it for his Running on Empty album 1977 which was taped live (not this recording). The album was not only recorded in concert. He recorded a song in the hotel room and one in the touring bus. A live album all with new songs. Very unique and a wonderful record. He has so many great songs. Check out his Late for the sky album with songs like For a dancer, Fountain of sorrow, Before the deluge or the title track. Great songwriting. My personal favorite songs are Sky blue and black and In the shape of a heart. Thanks for your great reaction!
My brother has been a tour driver for over 20 years. It's a lot of early days and late nights. This song is an amazing tribute to the many crew members who bust their ass every day.
@setonhillstudios yes he does. I'm a photographer for a radio station in Tampa and a few years ago, my brother and I were both at the same show working!
"Stay" was a #1 hit in 1960 by Maurice Williams and The Zodiacs. It features a very high falsetto on the 2nd verse. So that may be the version your dad was imitating. It was most definitely being imitated by the slide guitar player in this performance.

When I saw Jackson Browne on this tour, three of his roadies came out and did the falsetto section and that was even more fun. As others have said, this was written by the immortal Maurice Williams in 1953 and was a #1 doo wop hit for Williams and his band, the Zodiacs in 1960. Williams sang most of the song in falsetto.
This is a song I heard first as a 10 years old at 18 years old cousin’s house in the 70’s, and I was immediately mesmerised by it!! It is a magical piece of music, and there is something about the energy that makes it so memorable and emotional!! I just love it✨♥️✨♥️✨
I saw him do this a few times way back when. I think my favorite tune he did was "Ready or Not" because of the times when my kids were coming along. Tons of heart in that tune.
My experience was as a local, there before the show arrived and after they had pulled out. A couple times had to get the basketball floor out and set up stage to be ready for load in. And that grand would be one of the first things off and safety tucked away. Proabably between guitars and drum kit
David Lindley was the Lap Steel player.... Rosemary Butler was the back up singer... and OMG(!) is that Jim Gordon on the drums?!? I saw Jackson Browne accidentally... three times.... He performed at a No Nukes March and Rally.... at a Concert for The Navajo Nation and finally as the opening act for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.... Glad you enjoyed this... I can't wait to see you react to Running on Empty Cheers!
Ah, Jackson Browne. One of my all time fave artists, a kindred spirit for sure! That's the amazing David Lindley on laptop and falsetto as others here will tell you, and he could play pretty much anything with strings. He played with JB for decades and just passed away last year, Rock In Peace. I have been fortunate enuf to see Jackson 3 times over the years, the last time in the mid 80's. He's still touring and still sounds great!
I love this, having worked the drops for my high school drama department for their plays, and later (after 8 years in the USMC) worked a Kenny G concert as local crew (and I still have the T-shirt we were given).
What a crackup this one was! It would have been so much easier and more fun if we could have had you with us in the 70s. I’ll tell you why, too: because thousands of us are still trying to figure out WTF was that? Times 1,000. It was just an unprecedented time. I was 10 years old when the 70s began and 20 when they ended. I went 900 miles away to school (for good) in ‘75 when I was 15. It would be hard to overstate the number of monumental and cool things I saw in that decade. It was a sea-change in our culture and a real eye-opener for a young guy like me. Exposure and lots of it. You would have been welcome among any of my friends! All of us would have had an even better time had you been there. Experiencing it here now is a pretty close second. Thank you, Steven. I love seeing how some of these sounds and bands genuinely grab you!
I'm familiar with Jackson Browne. Had a couple of his albums as a kid. But he wasn't someone I really followed. I was more of a hard rocker/southern rocker. But I appreciated his storytelling. I think that's what drew me to the couple albums I had. This isn't a song I know though. Thanks for sharing.
Love Jackson Browne! His songwriting is fabulous. My all time favorites of his are The Barricades of Heaven & Before The Deluge - both are excellent examples of a writer at his peak.
David Lindley was an integral part of Jackson Browne's sound. Check out his violin parts on Before The Deluge and For A Dancer, two absolute classics. And Rosemary Butler -- just drops your jaw every time.
At least part of this song was written in the back room waiting to go on stage at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs New York. It's my local music venue and has been since my very first live concert, The Beach Boys😊
I saw them during this concert tour, probably a few weeks later...... only the guy you didn't know wasn't there, because Frankie Valli himself actually sang that as a special guest during the concert. It was in town and it was amazing to see Jackson Browne and Frankie Valli singing the song together on stage. Very special
I always like your reactions and analysis, but this one was probably my favorite. This was fun. You have a point, music is meant to be shared. It’s just “funner” that way.
Jackson Browne did several songs about being on the road. In this one, he made sure to pay homage to the folks that moved him and his band from venue to venue. Most people don't realize what a task that really is. "Just make sure you got it all set to go, before you come for this piano". Best line in the song. Running on Empty was another song about the life on the road. ua-cam.com/video/IKnnh8VDULs/v-deo.htmlsi=Kvd70JozsU3ZnqeT Enjoy!
Load Out and Stay are two different songs. Stay was originally done by Maurice Williams. Together they became a perfect encore for fans wanting just a bit more at the end of the concert. The woman is Rosemary Butler.
My all time favorite and poet for our generation. Not a better lyricist or a better person. I've been to many of his concerts and I don't have a ton of regrets except thru the benefit of hindsight ... BUT, I regret not making the Polyester Tour with Jackson and David Lindley in Red Rocks. David Lindley on slide and did the falsetto. Might be a myth but the story goes that the first time, he and Rosemary Builer planned it and didn't tell Jackson.
Stay is a cover of Frankie Valli and the 4 Seasons. It was written back in the 1960 by Maurice Williams for his group the Zodiacs, but Frankie Valli made it a hit.
Her name is Rosemary's Butler. You like the song Stay you should check out Tim Foust ( feom group Home Free) version. He sings all the parts. David Lindley is the lap guitar player. He passed away last year.

Such an iconic performance that really gives a nod to those behind the scenes! What should I check out next from Jackson Browne?!
Your reaction to Rosemary and David is the reason I watch reaction videos.
David Lindley was the guy playing the lap steel guitar and singing with the high pitched voice. Sadly, David passed away in 2023.
I remember Lindley's cover of Mercury Blues (from a solo effort) got a fair amount of airplay in So Cal back in the day.
Yup...David Lindley was a multi-instrumentalist who played fiddle, guitars, and pretty much any stringed instrument you could come up with...He and Jackson were lifelong friends and he was a big part of Jackson's sound for many of his earlier albums. The one and only Rosemary Butler is the female backup vocalist. One of the top backing vocalists in the industry. She's worked with EVERYONE.
David Lindley is one of my favorite parts, its silly, but every time i watch this, i watch him, in the dark of the stage, carefully put his steel on his chair and walk in the dark of the stage to the back up mic, sing the falsetto, and walk back in the dark to his steel. Stay was written by Maurice Williams, who very recently died. I saw Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs in Myrtle Beach in the late 60s.
... and Browne altered some of the lyrics to fit with the theme of The Load Out.

Let's Gooooo! Jackson is one of my favorites. Love love love this song. Great reaction and Peace out ✌️ ☮️ 🙏
Love Jackson Browne! His songwriting is fabulous. My all time favorites of his are The Barricades of Heaven & Before The Deluge - both are excellent examples of a writer at his peak.
One of the best singer/songwriters out there. Stay was written by Maurice Williams.
This entire band played together for years touring for Linda Ronstadt, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Warren Zevon and more that I'm forgetting.
I always like your reactions and analysis, but this one was probably my favorite. This was fun. You have a point, music is meant to be shared. It’s just “funner” that way.
So glad you enjoyed it! 😂 Yeah I guess “more fun” would be the correct grammar! 🤦🏻♂️ Who knows what’s gonna come outta my mouth half the time! 😁
check out Doctor, My Eyes.. which he wrote when he was SIXTEEN.
He's a genius..the eagles and him lived together
Love this 🎵 all his music is great
Long before the Internet
Saw them every year at Spac ❤❤❤amazing
Jackson Browne did several songs about being on the road. In this one, he made sure to pay homage to the folks that moved him and his band from venue to venue. Most people don't realize what a task that really is.
"Just make sure you got it all set to go, before you come for this piano". Best line in the song.
Running on Empty was another song about the life on the road.

Enjoy!
There is another version out there from No Nukes with Jackson Browne, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty and Rosemary Butler - great rendition!
Load Out and Stay are two different songs. Stay was originally done by Maurice Williams. Together they became a perfect encore for fans wanting just a bit more at the end of the concert.
The woman is Rosemary Butler.
David was Jackson's main musician for so long...
I love your reaction!!! Thank you :)
Thank you for watching!! 😁
Stay is a cover of Frankie Valli and the 4 Seasons. It was written back in the 1960 by Maurice Williams for his group the Zodiacs, but Frankie Valli made it a hit.
Their talking about the encore!
absolute 70's banger
No doubt about it!! Thanks for hanging out! 😁
Love your joy and enthusiasm
Really appreciate that! 😁
Her name is Rosemary's Butler. You like the song Stay you should check out Tim Foust ( feom group Home Free) version. He sings all the parts. David Lindley is the lap guitar player. He passed away last year.
Great artist & song
Hey, we feel you. This was an amazing performance. I have always loved this song.
