My chocolate brother, it's your white chocolate brother here ... 58 years young ... and we all thought this was a black band until we saw them perform on the Midnight Special ! The song is fire.
We all danced to this out on our stoops or at the roller rink back in the day (NYC). No one cared what anyone’s color was. We were all immigrants or 1st gen Americans, didn’t speak English at home, ate weird ethnic foods that we didn’t even know were weird until we were older and TV shows taught us to be embarrassed of our Moms’ delicious chicken feet, fermented gruels, and lamb with stewed okra. We only cared about who ran the fastest, threw the ball the farthest, or burped the loudest. The change that has happened in our nation these past 10-15 years is absolutely disgusting. This song reminds me of the days before toxic ideologies were pushed by the powers-that-be to divide us and cause suspicion and an obsession with examining others for micro-aggressions and offenses 😢
No, the brothers were in the band, check out KC and the Sunshine band another integrated band. In the '70's and '80's we didn't care about race, just good music. Love your reactions brother
When my daughter started kindergarten, there was a questionnaire to let the teacher know a little bit about the kids. Every kid in her class named "normal" kid songs. This happened to be my daughter's favorite song at the time. She knew the lyrics at 3. 😂😂😂 She just turned 21 a few days ago and it's still on every playlist she has.
Taught PE and drove the bus for K-3 elementary. Put the radio on one morning and this song came on. The bus was bouncing from the kids jamming when we pulled up.
Hell yes! The song started to diminish in popularity for a while. But when it basically became the Guardians of the Galaxy theme song it skyrocketed right back up there. Love that song!
Check out KC & The Sunshine Band, Boogie Shoes, I'm Your Boogie Man & more to skate to at the rink! They are awesome and that was my first concert at 7yrs old! Love your reactions!
thank you for playing tracks from the 70s. color did not matter to the average person, I am white, learned to dance by watching Soul Train. you are someone that can bring us back together. Bless you, do more of this.
I was so glad to see you were reacting to this performance! I love it when the two black guys point at the white singer and say play that funky music white boy! I also love it when he twirls his brass so fast it looks like it's going to take off flying! Fabulous reaction Shon!
He most definately is "The White Boy"! Apparantly, they were playing in a promidantly "black" club somewhere, and the audience didnt really like what they where playing. When a guy shouted out "Hey, Play That Funky Music, White Boy". And the rest they say, is history..... Like i said. APPARRANTLY! 😊❤🎼
This song is a true story. He was playing in a rock band in a club outside of Youngstown. When they were on break, a couple of black guys came up to them and asked, "Dont you white boys know any funky music?" He said he wrote the lyrics on a bar napkin at the end of the night in about ten minutes. Then, two days later he called up the bass player and wanted to get together to work on this new song he wrote. Theres an actual 30 minute documentary on here about it that VH-1 did. ("One Hit Wonders", maybe?)
Wild Cherry was formed in 1970. They have a very funky sound. Most people are shocked to see that this is a white band. The band's name "Wild Cherry" was taken from a box of cough drops.
I too thought for years that this song was performed by a black group until I heard the origins of it. The band was playing at a club in PIttsburgh to a mostly black audience. The patrons didn't care for their music and someone told a band member to play some funky music, white boy, and the rest is history. This is one of my favorite songs from the disco days along with Disco Inferno. Love and respect, brother, hog fam Canada 🇨🇦 ❤
I remember dancing to that at our grade 6 sochops during lunch time. Memories. That song, le freak, ring my bell, rappers delight, all kinds of awesome music. Love it!!!!
You would be surprised how many bands have brown band members. Thin Lizzy, The Doobies, Alice & Chains, Guns & Roses, KC & the Sunshine ,Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave, etc. My personal favorite is Killswitch Engage & Tommy Vext (formerly of Bad Wolves)
Any time I hear this song I can't help but smile and sing along. An infectious and inclusive track from Wild Cherry. The 70's were amazing because of artists like this.
There was a LOT of great funky black bands back then in the 70'S era that most young folks never heard of, after hip hop and rap and gangster culture took over the real musical and singing talent was lost.
We all thought Wild Cherry was a Black band until we saw them on TV. Back then, no internet, so we listened to the radio. Often didn't know what the artists looked like, sometimes until year later. Great reaction!
I lived along the Russian River in CA for about 15yrs. The beach next to ours had a jazz and blues festival every year Chaka Khan played there often. Also Al green, BB King, The Doobie Brothers, John Lee Hooker,Etta James... Nothing like dancing in your backyard while the all time greats are playing 100feet away ‼️I should have never moved ☮️
As a child of the 70s you can bet on the skating rink and the dance floor we all clapping our hands and trying some spins during that bridge 'when we were dancing and singing and moving to the music' ! It was a pretty cool time.
I saw Wild Cherry live with my Mother when I was around 8-9 years old. The came to our town in Pennsylvania which was not too far from their Ohio town. What an amazing concert, they sounded great live and the whole venue was on their feet. Miss those days, now 55. What an era it was.❤😂🎉
Ahh yes, welcome to the world of FUNK!! Some of the coolest music ever to hit the airwaves. Sly and the Family Stone, Funkadelic, and more, more, more!! Enjoy.
I've lived in Ohio my whole life. I didn't know Wild Cherry was from Steubenville. That is the same town Dean Martin was from. I know, you probably don't know who he is.....he was almost before my time too. Glad you enjoyed this song. When it came out (yeah, I was there) I also thought at least the lead singer was black.
This song was inspired by an experience they had when they played in a bar that caters to a mostly black patronage. This was back in 1973 or 1974, just as the Civil Rights turmoil was simmering down, the Vietnam War was ending and there was an overall good feeling for the future of America. Up until that time, the entertainment venues were mostly segregated. At that show, one of the patrons of the bar stood up during their set and shouted those words immortalized in this song
Thank you so much for sharing this. So many memories of when this came out. You probably would love the “Talking Heads”-“Burning Down the House” or “Take Me the River”. These are all great songs with similar energy. Enjoy whenever you can. Much love and appreciation from California.❤️🍀🌈🙏🏻😇❣️
Try the Average White Band from Scotland! Their most popular song was Pick Up the Pieces. A hoot! And Sly and the band, for sure! Love to watch you enjoy the music.
The whole group is Wild Cherry. He was one of the first truly integrated bands along with Sly and the Family Stone (which is a band you'd like to look at)

On man, you have GOT to hear the original studio recording that was such a massive hit in America's Bicentennial of 1976 or thereabouts and basically early on started already predicting what would happen in the early 80s which is where that huge battle between rocking disco would come together and be basically different elements of the same thing. It's not on display here quite as much, but on the hit single, it's got this blazing hardcore rock solo right in the middle of this disco stuff, and it's all so funky and fun and they know exactly what they're doing. Agree with you friend.
I’m 59 and it’s funny the reaction to especially the 70s, black and white, none of us cared, just having fun, not so sensitive like today.
This was a HUGE hit, it got #1 on the Billboard Top 100 in 1976.

I was telling my sister that Bruno Mars and his band remind me of KC and the Sunshine Band!
YES!!! KC & THE SUNSHINE BAND-I’m Your Boogie Man
We need this unity and one love back young man. GenX white boy here. Excellent reaction.❤❤
This song was definitely a big hit at Roller skating rinks everywhere! Had to put the Disco ball on for this song!

Definitely agree to the 'One Hit Wonder' Idea. Perhaps Joe Dolce or Bunsen burner by John Otway. Two very silly but fun songs.
