  • A complete teardown of the 2015 Chrysler / Dodge / Jeep 2.4L Multiair Tigershark engine.
    This engine was hydro locked when driven through deep water and it suffered self destructed shortly afterward.

    These engines are known for oil consumption up to 2018 that could be a factor

      This one’s oil consumption was solved with a software update and it was running excellent until he hydro locked it in deep water.

    What oil did you use and how often was it changed? It looks very clean

      It was changed as often as the car told us to, and we used a full synthetic called “Brad Penn”. It’s the brand used by the local quick-lube place.

    This is called the Multi-air or “ Tigergshark” in my 2020 Jeep Cherokee. It is a Fiat design and I hope it is durable. Do you know how many miles this engine had?

      It had over 160,000 miles and was running nicely until it was driven into a flooded area which caused it to throw the connecting rod.

      @@JoesCarSmartsNY that gives me hope. I sure wish you could just buy a regular engine but it is either this or a turbo like the Ford Ecoboost I think Fiat started it around the year 2000. I do find it odd that my 2.4 is multiport injection and not DI

      @@scottydavis1813 Maybe yours is not the “MultiAir” ? Maybe that’s the difference. I think the MultiAir includes the DI and the special intake valve management system. But I’m not an expert on these by any means.

      @@JoesCarSmartsNY my engine does have “multiair “ on the cover. I did a little research and the 2.4 Multiair for the Jeeps are all MPI. I think the 2.4 was a global engine and can be found in a lot of different configurations

      Worse engine ever my Chrysler 200 consumed oil a quart every 1,000 miles

      Another 2.4L engine with only 26k miles. This one was replaced because it was driven into deep water and hydro locked. That destroyed cylinder #1 unfortunately.

      @@monicaayala5621 I had a friend install it at his shop. It’s a major project. Unfortunately I didn’t have the time for it.

    Is this something insurance would cover?

      Not too sure. The way it played out the owner took it to the dealer first, they put in a new starter and spark plugs. The rod didn’t break until a week later, it’s kind of an odd situation.
      I think if the rod broke right away maybe it would have been an easier claim to file? If someone else goes through the same thing they should probably consult their insurance. This owner has a very high insurance deductible so the first repair at the dealer didn’t even reach his deductible.

      So it wasn’t hydro lock more likely oil dilution. A timely oil change could save the day.

      @@vladchan That was my other theory, but the hydro locked seemed more correct because the rod snapped right in half. I’m not an expert oil inspector, but I didn’t really find evidence of oil in the pan and the bearings seem well lubricated still even during this teardown. I also thought it could be a combination of oil dilution and a stressed rod from hydro locking that lasted a week before finally snapping.
