The Yom Kippur War: Where Men Became Beasts

  • Recent events have shown us how much a few days can change things in the Middle East. Just 19 days in 1973 saw a massive conflict between Israel, Egypt, Syria, and a scattering of Arab allies that still shapes the region to this day.
The Yom Kippur War as the Israelis call it, also known as the October War, the Ramadan War, or the Fourth Arab-Israeli War saw both sides endure devastating defeats and miraculous victories in one of the bloodiest chapters in the history of the modern Middle East.
Today on A Day In History, we look at how Egypt and Syria launched a sudden invasion that ended up with Israeli troops threatening both their capital cities and reshaping the landscape of Middle Eastern politics. If you appreciate videos about challenging topics like this, consider leaving a like and subscribing for more engaging videos like this one.
    Origins of the War
The immediate root of the war was Israel’s success in the Six-Day War of 1967. Israel had fended off a coalition of Arab states and massively expanded its own territory, taking control of the Golan Heights from Syria, the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan, and both the Gaza Strip and Sinai Peninsula from Egypt.
The conflict only hardened existing animosity between Israel and the Arab states and led a coalition of countries including Egypt, Syria, Jordan, and Iraq to declare the “three no’s” in their dealings with Israel: no permanent peace, no recognition of Israel’s legitimacy, and no negotiations with its government.
Egypt, who had lost the most territory to Israel, continued to engage in skirmishes along the border throughout the late 1960s until President Anwar Sadat agreed to a ceasefire in 1970. Sadat’s government signaled its willingness to break the “three no’s” by recognising the State of Israel in exchange for them returning the Sinai Peninsula and other Arab territories, but Israel turned down the terms. Sadat’s concerns were shared by his Syrian counterpart Hafiz al-Assad who made recovery of the Golan Heights a top foreign-policy priority. Under the guise of diplomatic summits, Assad and Sadat began planning an attack on Israel and both ramped up military training and recruitment.
As always, the Cold War loomed in the background. The United States backed Israel and feared that rising Arab power would increase Soviet influence in the region. Meanwhile, Egypt and Syria were in the Soviet orbit, although not nearly as closely tied to it as Israel was to its own superpower ally. Both Moscow and Washington were in a period of thawing relations after the brinkmanship of the 1960s and neither superpower was eager to see war break out in the region again. However, that did not prevent either superpower funneling arms, armor, and aircraft into their respective allies in anticipation of a potential conflict.

While the ultimate result of the war was a decisive Israeli victory, this would not have been possible without considerable US arms shipments of advanced munitions. As a consequence, Kissinger was in a position to extract concessions from Israel in the Sinai, with the goal of pulling Egypt out of the Soviet sphere.
On the other hand there is also evidence that Israel refused to even consider a first strike because the US told they would not be supported had they done it. We dont know how the war would go in that case

@@jackzimmer6553 I don’t think it’s fair to say that Egypt failed to achieve its war aims.
Since 1970-71, Egypt had broken with its Arab allies on the Three No’s, with the goal of achieving a normalization of relations with Israel, in exchange for the evacuation of the Israeli occupied Sinai, and more broadly a renunciation by Israel of all its conquests in the 1967 war.
There was a considerable body of opinion in the Israeli government who wanted to pursue this diplomatically, but were ultimately stymied by the hardliners in the government.
So, while I would never say Israel lost in 1973, their inability to win on their own resources, and the strong early showing by the Egyptian forces, did defeat the faction in Tel Aviv arguing for the permanent occupation of the Sinai.
The big winner, of course, was the US, which succeeded in pulling Egypt out of the Soviet sphere, becoming a US ally.

Thats the main point, thats what allow israelis to steam enemy advances and the wreak havoc not only in the enemy frontlines but rear areas and even capitals... no war since ww2 been won without either years of assymetrical struggle or air power. Same happened everywhere that american airplanes met soviet anti air defenses, and still happens pretty much today... the much vaunted s300 and s400 proved being incapable of dealing with quasi-modern western weapons, while patriot umbrella protects Kharkiv from even Kinzhals. Most people travel there by foot because there are almost no buses or planes because they are all destroyed. Good video. My only criticism would be that it did seem slightly biased in favor of Israel in a few parts. The part where you were talking about claims of war crimes for example. You went in depth into all the horrible accusations of torture and murder against the Arab forces but then when it came time to talk about the allegations against Israel, all you mentioned was Israeli settlers destroying buildings in a town as they left it. We all know that the IDF has been routinely accused of the same crimes you mentioned for the Arab forces, so why not mention them?
Ultimately though, you created a great video and I subbed to the channel. Looking forward to checking out the rest of your work.

Violence against women is just a tool of war to them , a way to humiliate and terrorize as has happened on October 7th. We have testimonies from captured Hamas terrorists that they had instructions to do so. Of course testimonies, whether made under duress or not can be questioned for veracity but at a minimum do not exclude this explanation and we do have eyewitness accounts
