It was extremely rare for a bomber to actually shoot down an attacking fighter and the fact that the royal flush shot down that many aircraft in one engagement is likely one of those tall tale war stories manufactured by the aircorp to put a spin on how badly the mission failed.
I mean with all due respect it is a possibility but it’s also a possibility that it was not. But on that note does it really matter. They were a real group and they were the only survivors and they were in a horrid war fighting for us I see no need to demote their accomplishments
@@flareoil533 I believe there was when Rosenthal evaded those fighters and the fortress gunners surprisingly repelled the attackers. Had the rear gunner not been so deadly, they surely would have been destroyed. Excellent video too. I found it terrifying. Hats off to you.
Imagine being one of the officers who signed off on the mission, waiting at the air base as you see a single heavy bomber, slowly land onto the runway. Glad to hear that at least most of the plane crews made it out alive, just captured, but all of their sacrifices have been immortalized.
From Dunkirk, at the beginning of World War II, to Normandy, almost at the end, the Allied Armies did not put a single soldier in Germany. Not a single one. The participation of the Allied Forces in Europe was limited to Aerial Bombing. These actions received a lot of publicity to make us believe that the Aerial Bombings were winning the war. But, there is a very long list of Bombing cities by “Mistake”. The bombing of Nijmegen in the Netherlands (February 1944), it occurred when US bombers returning from a failed mission, as occurred in most cases, were looking for "Optional" targets. Nearly 1,000 Dutch civilians were killed by the bombing. It is proven fact that Aerial Bombardment does NOT win wars, unless it’s Atomic. Aerial Bomb't can destroy cities but does NOT destroy armies. If there is any doubt, then Nazi Germany would have defeated England, after nearly a year of bombing, or the US would have won in Korea, Vietnam or Afghanistan. In fact, it wasn't until 1949-50 that Precision Instruments were available for aerial bombardment. Until then, if a bomber hit within 300 or 400 meters of the target, it was considered a "Bullseyes". In night bombing raids, 500 meters off target was then considered a "Perfect Shot". Propaganda has always led us to believe that we, "The Yankees", beat Hitler. But, I have news for you: The US did not win the war against Germany. The Russians won it. The Allied Army of the US, UK, Canada, Belgium and France (and Poland, and other countries), was able to reach Normandy, thanks to the Soviets destroying the Nazis in Stalingrad, Leningrad, in Kurks and in Kiev, in 1943. It took them 289 days but the Russians won and without the help of nobody… OF NOBODY! Normandy was until June 1944, and Mr. “Hollywood” Patton did NOT manage to set foot on Germany until February 1945, when the Red Army was going over Berlin. In Fact, General Patton was able to cross the border into Germany only when the Russians were 150 kilometers from the Oder River (LOL). The Allies were defeated at Arnhem (Market Garden Sep. 25-1944), The Battle of Hürtgen Forest (September to December 1944), and at The Battle of the Bulge (Jan. 25-1945). Now, "Operation Varsity" took place near the end of the War (March 1945), and only 85,000 German soldiers fought against almost 700,000 Allied Forces who could NOT cross the Rhine River due to the heroic resistance of an "Army" of 18-year-olds and 50-year-old Reserve Infantry. So, here General Patton was paralyzed without fuel, while the Red Army was preparing for its last offensive into Berlin. Look here: The average age of the German Army that fought in Normandy was between 18 and 24 years old. And these soldiers faced each other in a ratio of 37 to 1, without Tanks, without Artillery, no Navy nor Air Force. To make matters worse, knowing that four Parachute Divisions were inland behind their backs. This was the reason the Allies won in Normandy. Never the less, It took the Allies 8 months to advance only 500 kilometers from Normandy to Arnhem, and from there, start the Withdrawal back to the border of France/Belgium (What?), facing a virtually defeated German Army cuz USSR. It's a Verifiable Fact that is written in all the History Books, that the German High Command surrendered to the Russian Generals six days BEFORE the first US soldier set foot in Berlin.
@@salvadorvizcarra769 Saying the Russians single handedly won the war is stupid. If the Allies weren't drawing fire in the West they never would have beaten the Germans and vice versa. And while the Russians definitely did the most damage they still would have been crushed if the Germans didn't also have a war going in the West and South causing them to have less supplies to send to the East.
Masters of the Air missed the opportunity to tell a better story. We are blessed because we have Yarnhub! Rosie and DeBlasio , the tail gunner are legends!
That show left so much to be desired. I'm glad to have it but wished for more. My Grandfather flew in the Flying Fortresses. The show left me wanting more and walked away not even finishing it. But I'm a tough citric. Believe those men's stories deserved a better telling. In likely the last hurrah for ww2 as we descend into WW3
Once again this channel is very underrated. They should have more subscribers than they already have at the moment. The amount of detail, time, and dedication that is put into these videos almost always amazes me. Including how the music is placed as well. This channel is like a diamond in the rough just like other certain channels that I know are sometimes suppressed by UA-cam and its algorithm. Whether they be military channels or other types of genres on this platform.
Harry Crosby’s book ‘A Wing and a Prayer’ is one of the best covering the Bloody 100th. My uncle was a waist gunner on the plane ‘Our Babe’, and I cherish the memories of him telling me this and many other stories about his air group. Great video and retelling of Rosie’s story.
I read the caption and Immediately remembered the scene from Masters of the air. The Shock and despair in the eyes of the ground crew and staff said it all that day
The more stories I hear from Yarnhub and the better detail they depict the faces to me really highlights the evil of war, and the desperation of ordinary men, and civilians.
I can't imagine the pain in the surviving pilots minds, or the sorrow in the crews hearts awaiting the 100ths return when they realized this was it when the one landed.
The Bloody Hundreds Munster Raid.. Yes! I recommend everyone to watch the Masters Of The Air series, this story is potrayed there, along with any others
It had its moments, but the series just felt "lack luster" in a lot of categories. Character development, screenplay and a lot of CGI effects were just overall meh. I was disappointed as I am a very big WW2 aviation buff, and was really looking forward to this series when it was announced. And the editing/scene transitions were terrible too.
@@JakeOrion i dont really agree with you. Yes it wasnt quite on the level of band of Brothers, but other than that? Daamn was it a perfect series. I fell in love instantly with Buck and Bucky, some CGIs werent that great but overall, it blew my mind! 🤯 Dunno About the character development, for me it perfectly potraied the tragedy of losing so many crews, thats why you didnt have so much of the character development. No idea About the editing, you must have watched wrong series, i had no problem with it😂 (and its definitely better than any video yarnhub will ever make, i dont mean that badly, its just a fact)

My mother had a cousin. Her first husband was a waist gunner on a B-17. He completed his tour and re-upped. Third mission, second tour and he was killed. With the availability of information today I was able to find exactly where his grave is, in Denmark.
If you’re unable to visit your ancestor and you know exactly what graveyard he’s buried at, go to FindAGrave and you can request a photo of his grave. Might sound strange but I’m a “stone nerd” in my country (Scotland), so I visit a LOT of old graveyards that have Neolithic, Pictish and Gaelic stones, and because I’m visiting a lot of old graveyards I’ll check FindAGrave to see if that graveyard has requests for photos. A lot of the time folk request military (commonwealth) grave photos and I’m more than happy to find the persons ancestor and get a photo for them. Just a thought if you’re unable to see your ancestors grave but would like to see it, it’s completely free :)

That thumbnail picture bears a striking resemblance to a picture of the B-17 my grandfather served on during the war. He was the top turret gunner and flight engineer on a plane called the "Wee Willie". He and the rest of the crew he flew with managed to complete 25 successful bombing missions in early 1945 and were rewarded with a month of leave at home in the US. While they were on leave, the "Wee Willie", with a different crew flying it, was hit by flak and went down with only one survivor. Another B-17 in the formation managed to take some photos of the plane as it was disintegrating in midair. My grandpa once showed me the series of photos in a book he had, and remarked "I'm very glad I wasn't on the plane for THAT mission!"
Once again, you guys knocked it out of the park with this one! That was a hell of an adaptation of one of my favorite episodes of Masters of the Air! Keep it up and keep em flying!! “Let’s rack em up and knock em down!”
What an incredible story of resilience and bravery! The "Bloody 100th" certainly earned its name on that fateful day. It's amazing to think about the courage these young officers displayed in the face of such daunting odds. Thank you for sharing this poignant piece of history!
@@jacobc722yeah, it’s bravery. War is inherently a nasty thing, and people have to do horrible things. It doesn’t change the fact that the actions of individuals in the face of death constitutes bravery. Bravery is not necessarily a moral concept.
@@certifiedfreeaboo3790 “have to do” yeah man those German babies were at the door of those airmen and I’m sure you’d say the same things about other groups of people who did horrible things and definitely not flip flop
@@jacobc722 no, even people I see as evil can still be brave. Once again, bravery is not about doing the right thing, but rather showing courage in the face of danger to yourself. Even if I disagree with a group of people, they can still be inherently brave. I am not defending the morality of the US for bombing civilians, but rather stating that the airmen were brave. Just like the Germans who went to fight them.
@@jacobc722 that’s not to say I don’t personally see the US airmen as heroes (I am biased, obviously). Wars are fought for the sake of the rich, old, and powerful. Everyone in the middle just suffers. And yes, it is a “have to do” situation. There are many severe punishments that can be brought against you for disobeying orders, especially during war time. People naturally value themselves and their groups more than others.

This mission was the one that was shown in the recent TV series _Masters of the Air_ . This mission, along with the tragic Schweinfurt mission some time later, showed that without fighter escort, the American bombers were extremely vulnerable to fighters even with the massive defensive gun firepower.
Actually the Bombing Raid for Schweinfurt and Regensburg happened BEFORE the Bombing Raid to Münster Raid... The FIRST time they went to Schweinfurt and Regensburg was in August 17th, 1943 ... The second time they hit both cities was in October 14th, 1943, it became known as, "Black Thursday" ... So yeah...now you know!
@@Knowbody42 True, but just so we aint hatting on the P-47, (my fav warbird) there would have been fighter escort if it were not for the weather. had it been a squadron of P-51 in the same conditions there still would have been no escort on this mission
@@SteelCommanderCat The P-47 at the time didn't have the range to escort fighters all the way to the target, with a escort radius of only 375 miles. The P-51B/C had an escort radius of 520 miles, and that made it possible to escort bombers all the way to at least Berlin. Later P-47 models did have the range, but it required more internal fuel tankage and a more powerful engine.
@@Sacto1654 Toward some targets yes. until close to the end of the war, the P-47 did not have the range when flying from bases in England. However, to Munster, they did. There is a reason why they were scheduled to meet up with fighter escort in the Netherlands after all. But the plane in question doesn't matter that much here. Had the escort flyers had the range of a B-29, they still could not have taken off in the foil weather.

You guys did a far superior job of telling the story than Masters of the Air did. I think the difference was that you all cared more than the producers of the show did about these men. Thank you.
@@matthewbeach2669 I felt like Masters of the Air skimmed through it. It was hard to know what exactly was happening to all the crews since it only focuses on a few B-17s. I think all of the men are important and telling us how each crew got shot down, or at least who was recorded in flight logs gives a better feeling of remorse opposed to showing another CGI B17 getting shot up in the show.
@@keatonhugo6129 Hmm. Personally I think it did what it needed for the show. It didn't have a Yarnhub style narator to make it clear who was who and what was what. Covering any addational crews would have clogged up the flow and made it harder to understand. Getting up set at Master of the Air for not covering every crew is like getting upset at Yarnhub for not going into deep background of any of the crew. Not that kind of Media. Sense the show did do such a good handling of one's who where on screen, I didn't feel any disservice or lack of love to the men in the event being covered. Just a runtime that needed to be meet. Just a different form of media. Luckily for us we have Yarnhub a more documentary style media to also watch and enjoy, I think both did perfectly for there job for the kind of show that they are.
@@keatonhugo6129 Got to hear a number of the names of the planes and pilots lost in the interrogation, which I'd enjoyed, however this is consistent with Band of Brothers and the Pacific. Both of those were deeply cared about, and it shows, however they'd had to effectively condense the companies to craft a watchable piece of entertainment. Even as a seasoned watcher of Band of Brothers with intimate knowledge I still can catch myself hearing names I don't recognize. The showrunner Jonathan Orloff has posted a number of cool posts regarding production in "Masters of the Air Behind the Scenes" a facebook group, it's clear he cares about the 100th and the story, he'd been working on the adaption for 11 years. I ultimately liked the show but felt it had just tried to do and show too much in too little episodes. The production was done during lockdown, suffered multiple delays which could not have helped.
I am genuinely blown away by the production quality of these new videos. The old ones have a certain charm to them, but these are what I would expect from a major film studio not a youtube channel. Bravo to the writing, animation, and voice over teams for an amazing experience.

My dad worked with the Box D in his time with the airforce, ofc it wasn't bombers but he was very happy to see the 100th getting the attention, especially that Box D in the show. Watching it with him was wonderful.
Wife's grandfather was a co-pilot in the 100th BG in 1944, never had a chance to talk to him about his experiences as he passed less than a year after we started dating. Luckily he finished his tour of duty...the plane he was on was lost some months after that. Disappeared into a cloud with one engine on fire, never seen again.
Anyone watched this documentary called masters of the air on apple tv based on this exact sqn? The moment I saw the title i immediately knew it was the bloody hundredth
The faces ans movements have improved a lot over time, same with the fragmemting of airplanes is very realistic than simply a big fireball. Really drives home how durable b17 were, 20mm with minengeschoss are no joke
Initially, I thought this CGI was going to be terrible, but it turned out to be very respectful. I had a very good friend of mine (now deceased) who was a pilot in WW2 and would tell me about the ball turret gunners. He looked into the distance and told me most of the time they would come back as sauce to be hosed out. If we can learn anything, war, is not the answer.

I mean with all due respect it is a possibility but it’s also a possibility that it was not. But on that note does it really matter. They were a real group and they were the only survivors and they were in a horrid war fighting for us I see no need to demote their accomplishments

Imagine being one of the officers who signed off on the mission, waiting at the air base as you see a single heavy bomber, slowly land onto the runway. Glad to hear that at least most of the plane crews made it out alive, just captured, but all of their sacrifices have been immortalized.
As a german i was worried the pilots would open fire on the parachuting crew, literally had a clench in my throat entire video. Rest in peace
@@kilianfirebolt It would be a waste of time in this instance as the bombers were still active
Ya the people who signed off on it was crazy. Suicide mission basically.

That was one great turret gunner on the surviving plane
As soon as it started I got chills from it!
Once again, you guys knocked it out of the park with this one! That was a hell of an adaptation of one of my favorite episodes of Masters of the Air! Keep it up and keep em flying!!

Bravery while targeting civilians ? Like oh yeah man they ran through flak to kill those kids
Cloudy November sky, cold weather, and WW 2 stories bring back old memories....
Voice acting is incredible, they did a good job of showing despair in their voice when they found out theres no fighter escorts.

My jaw dropped when I pressed play on the video. The production quality is better than a lot of movies! Absolutely incredible!
This mission was the one that was shown in the recent TV series _Masters of the Air_ . This mission, along with the tragic Schweinfurt mission some time later, showed that without fighter escort, the American bombers were extremely vulnerable to fighters even with the massive defensive gun firepower.
And then they designed the P51 Mustang to have enough range to escort bombers over enemy territory.

I don't know looked about the same covarge and care to me. Master of the Air did pretty great job. I loved both equeally.
Even as a seasoned watcher of Band of Brothers with intimate knowledge I still can catch myself hearing names I don't recognize.

Initially, I thought this CGI was going to be terrible, but it turned out to be very respectful. I had a very good friend of mine (now deceased) who was a pilot in WW2 and would tell me about the ball turret gunners.
