- “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika” - ‘Unity in Diversity’ - that is Indonesia’s national motto. But what happens when respect for that diversity collapses? That’s exactly what happened in 1965 when a wave of violence swept across the nation taking the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.
Today on A Day In History, we’ll take you through the horrific Indonesian Mass Killings of 1965 and 1966. From the coup that started it all through the mass graves and executions, and the US support that enabled it all.

Indonesia under Sukarno
Indonesia in the 1960s was caught in a delicate balancing act at home and abroad. President Sukarno, a hero of Indonesian independence and the President since 1945, had consolidated the political, ethnic, and religious interests of his people into a relatively stable government. He had also forged a successful middle-path in the Cold War, maintaining good relations with both Moscow and Washington while being a leading light in the global Non-Aligned Movement.
At home, Sukarno was concerned with maintaining balance between the three most powerful forces in Indonesian politics, which he once called the “three spirits” of his country: Islam, communism, and nationalism (or more accurately the military).
Indonesia’s Communist Party (PKI) boasted an estimated 2 million or more members, making it the largest non-ruling Communist party in the world. Communists had tried and failed to revolt before in 1948, but their sheer popularity kept them relevant and powerful. While Sukarno himself was no Communist, he had left-leaning tendencies that kept the Communists from outright opposing him.
As a Muslim and the figurehead of the independence movement, Sukarno enjoyed reliable support from devoted Muslims and nationalists, although both had their reservations about him. More importantly, both groups deeply distrusted the communists. The right-leaning nationalists and military brass had a natural distaste for them, and Communism’s alternative morality and hostility to religion made it plenty of enemies among the Muslim faithful.
Sukarno was good at this balancing act for a while, but in 1965, that balance broke down and millions suffered for it.

my teacher told me a story about his brother complaining about Soeharto not doing anything (improving) the small villages in West Java. He went missing few moments later and still not found till this day
One of my teacher went through the same exact thing. He revoked againts soeharto's political decision and he got kidnapped or lets just say "relocated". He survived though and could live to tell his story.

The school indoctrinated us to dehumanize the communist, there's a documentary film called G30SPKI about that failed communist revolution, it's not for kids, it's a 4 hour long documentary with a lot of violence in it. And it's mandatory for kids to watch that movie every 30th September. Even if it's not mandatory anymore since Suharto's regime ends, it becomes a tradition and kids were still forced to watch the censored version of the movie.

In discussing history, we must not forget the context of that time, namely the Cold War, where Indonesia was a victim. Indonesia's history stands in stark contrast to Cambodia's; while Cambodia witnessed the era of Pol Pot's victorious communists, in Indonesia, it was the capitalists who emerged victorious. However, whether it was the communists or the capitalists who won, both ended in mass killings.

Semua itu tentu adalah persiapan ke Lobang Buaya, tempat penyembelihan dan pembunuhan yang ngeri dan di luar perikemanusiaan atas pemimpin-pemimpin Angkatan Darat. Jelas sekali hal ini menurut pola RRC, suatu hal yang sisa-sisa pikiran itu masih nampak dalam pola-pola Tri Panji dan Perjuta-nya sisa-sisa PKI latent yang nampak dari pemberontakan-pemberontakan Blitar (Jawa Timur) dan PKS/Paraku di Kalimantan Barat. Untunglah waktu itu belum sampai terbentuk Angkatan ke-5 itu. Tetapi usaha-usaha Aidit ke arah perebutan kekuasaan makin hebat sejak awal tahun 1965. Apa saja digunakan nya sebaik-baiknya. Saya ingat sekali, waktu PNI mengadakan kongres tahun 1965, tak lama sesudah itu PKI mengadakan Hari Ulang Tahun (HUT) pula. Semua pigura dan hiasan untuk Kongres PNI terus saja dipakai PKI untuk HUT nya. Pohon-pohon kayu, tembok-tembok, rumah-rumah orang, kantor-kantor, habis dicoreti gambar-gambar palu-arit. Hal ini mengingatkan kembali kepada cara-cara PKI di Delanggu waktu RI di Yogya dulu. Saya sudah merasa, kalau PKI menang, Soekarno malah akan disingkirkannya, bukannya diangkat. Bagi tiap orang yang tidak buta hati, pasti akan arif dia, ke mana suasana sedang berkembang dan apa yang suatu waktu pasti akan meledak dan akan mengagetkan serta membukakan mata setiap orang…. … Waktu itu yang saya lihat, bahwa satu-satunya yang sanggup menghadapi PKI hanya tentara, Angkatan Darat yang dipimpin oleh Jendral Yani… (Hal 61)
… Saya mendengar pertama-tama berita penculikan dan pembunuhan pimpinan Angkatan Darat dari Simatupang, pagi tanggal 1 Oktober 1965 dan bahwasanya Nasution lolos dengan lari melompati pagar pekarang belakang rumahnya dan bersembunyi di balik sebuah pohon di sana, serta berita bahwa anaknya yang bernama Ade Irma Suryani terbunuh. Waktu Wangsa Widjaja, Sekretaris saya datang, saya suruh mencek lagi mengenai berita itu. Kabar selanjutnya mengatakan bahwa Nasution setelah keluar dari persembunyiannya terus pergi ke Kostrad. Didapainya Soeharto sudah mengambil tindakan. Mula-mula Untung menguasai RRI, kemudian terdengar pidatonya dan pengumuman mengeani Dewan Revolusi dan sebagainya. Tetapi malamnya terdengarlah pidato Soeharto, selaku Panglima Kostrad, setelah ia merebut RRI kembali serta menguasai keadaan seperti semula. Reaksi batin saya pertama-tama mendenga itu, ialah bahwa in pasti PKI lagi…… (Hal 74)
….Dari pihak Islam reaksi itu amat kuat, terutama mereka yang selama ini merasa tertekan…
….. Setelah orang-orang Islam tahu bahwa PKI mengadakan kup, tentara telah bertindak di bawah pimpinan Soeharto, maka rakyat pun ikut bergerak dan bertindak membantu tentara sampai hampir sukar untuk dikendalikan… (Hal 75)
…. Tindakan rakyat yang selama ini tertekan dan kemudian membalas tidak tanggung-tanggung, menunjukkan bahwa perkiraan Aidit itu tidak benar. Rakyat dulu yang dia kira di belakangnya, ternyata tidak sebanyak yang diperkirakannya. Hal itu disebabkan karena cara-cara Aidit selama ini ang didasarkan kepada pengerahan-pengerahan massa berbondong-bondong, disertai agitasi dan terror mental, sehingga banya orang hanya ikut-ikutan untuk mengamankan dirinya saja. Itulah akibat dari kenyataan, bahwa faktor pendidikan dan keinsyafan tidak didahulukannya, bahkan diabaikannya, dibandingkan dengan gerakan-gerakan agitasi dan pengerahan-pengerahan secarai beramai-ramai. Jadi prinsip-prinsip yang dianutnya itu belum berakar dan belum dimengerti orang banyak….(Hal 76)
…. Mestinya kader yang betul mengerti dan insaf dibina lebih dulu oleh PKI sehingga mencapai jumlah yang cukup besar untu mendukung massa yang dikerahkan itu barulah cukup kuat. Tetapi mereka telah merasa kuat dan bangga dengan massa ramai-ramai dan selogan-selogan serta tempik sorak di lapangan rapat-rapat terbuka yang sering dibikin seperti keranjingan. Tapi semuanya tanpa akar yang tertanam kuat dalam masyarakat. Jadi kalau dalam rapat-rapat umum dan pidato-pidato yang hebat, nampaknya rakyat setuju semua. Tetapi di luar itu rakyat sebenarnya jengkel. Ini kurang diketahui oleh PKI…(hal 76-77)

My grandfather was a witness to the dark story of 1965. He witnessed many groups of communist radicals beheading people in the rice fields with sickles. He also witnessed many riots hunting for communists, my grandfather's neighbors were also communist sympathizers, but he escaped the blacklist of targets by the New Order government. At that time there were many rumors circulating that the PKI/Indonesian Socialist Party was not religious/atheist, like those in the Soviet Union and the PRC. Because of this, ethnic Chinese in Indonesia were also affected by the eradication of the New Order and were labeled Communists. Unfortunately, this is being exploited by some Indonesian politicians to attack certain parties, even though those accused have nothing to do with it and have no tendencies towards this ideology.

A story from my mother in law.. his grandpa was accused as a PKI members by local authority and ulema (Suharto loyalist), even though he was devout muslim himself.. they give him a choice; strip his lands and possessions or dead for him and his family, he chooses for living.. this turmoil indeed was the darkest time in indonesian history after colonialism..

We also have to acknowledge what the PKI have done towards the broader society. My grandparents lived in Pematangsiantar, and were approached by communists in 1965 in which they were asked to dig big holes on the ground under the notion of "defending against air strikes". They did exactly that and once the coup plot was uncovered it turns out my grandparents were practically digging their own graves. I still stand with the fact that there are many unjustified killings, but this perspective applies to both the government and PKI themselves.

"Unity in Diversity" as Indonesian motto is not collapsing in any case by this 'Communist Killings'. This motto is used to unify Indonesia's diverse religion, culture, tribes, languages, and customs. Not Ideology.
You can't have a unify country run by two different system of governance. It is utterly impossible, even if it is possible, no country has ever done it. Let alone young Indonesia. So when PKI decided to try and have a coup, by murdering 6 of Indonesia's general and a major on the night of September 30th 1965 (30S PKI). To prevent such a tragedy from happening again, Through SuPerSeMar (Surat Perintah Sebelas Maret or The Order of Eleventh March) The former general then Indonesia's second president "Soeharto" decided to take a stance to put an end to the communist Ideology in Indonesia. To Its roots. And continue to making sure that no one uphold the said Ideology in any type of way, by any means necessary, even if it's bloody.
I'm not saying what they did is right, for my mother's family is one of their victims amongst millions others. Before the events of 1965 there was an event called "masa bersiap" this was a massacre of people of European descent, East Asian descent, and those who were considered pro-Dutch, this was more terrible than 1965, because who the victims were was not even traced, the only history recorded was an event in the mobile period called gedoran depok, where one city, people of European descent were massacred.
It is said that the victims exceeded the anti-communism incident.
I know you just heard this for first time,but yah it more chaotic than 1965 and we dont know How many are victims, And the pioneers of the social revolution were the communists who were later massacred in 1965.

What are your source to make statements like that? There has been written about these events. See Revolusi by David Van Rebrouck. But I guess there are more scholar sources available.
The number of victims is not even comparable. The highest estimated number I found of victims/casualties is maybe 60k for the masa Bersiap. The killing of communists is ranging from 500k to 1mil. Also the two massacres have very different history and context behind them. Masa Bersiap was a hectic period were young people were so desperate for freedom and independence, after more then 300 years of violent colonisation and an extreme famine, that they participated in an outburst of extreme violence. The communist killings were an intended, systematic killing of people with a different opinion to serve the agenda of American imperialism. Please read the Jakarta Method and Revolusi to get a broader understanding of these events.

My grandmother once told me that my grandfather had been arrested by the police because he was considered a PKI. but was not executed because he was not a PKI member. he was arrested because of his name and thumbprint (at that time not many could read, write and sign) on the list of PKI members. What he knew was that a group of people came to the villages to give hoes for free and they explained that the hoes were aid from the government. If you want to receive a hoe, just register your name and thumbprint. At that time, the hoe was a valuable item, because it was difficult to obtain and was the main tool in agriculture. because of the list of names, almost the entire village population was detained, but the police understood the situation and they only had to report once a week.
I think many victims don't know anything about the PKI. they are just small farmers who have never had an education. because of small assistance/gifts their names were registered as PKI members.

My grandpa was an army engineer within TNI during cold war era. It was one of the darkest moment of our history. Commies elements had infiltrated my grandpa's unit, and stole several armored vehicles to support 1965 actions. In a skirmishes the MP clashed with commies elements within TNI, the MP captured and interrogated them.
They (commies) admitted that they had been promised for a promotion if they participated in the 30 September movement (g30s). My grandfather's subordinates who were arrested admitted that they had been promised to obtain my grandfather's official residence as a trophy. They also had a list of who would be massacred, including my grandfather, grandmother, regent and regional officials. The commies made a large trench in the forest for the massacre location. Luckily their plan was canceled, because this information had been leaked, and the MP (Military Police) quickly acted. We were lucky, grandmother was safe, and grandfather at that time was on deployment in other city.
After the G30s failed we carried out counter insurgency quickly.
Even when my grandfather was sent to the USA at Fort Belvoir, his american colleagues really appreciated Indonesia for its success in eradicating communism.

If you were an officer at that time or an NCO, you might not know if few of your men actually were commies. Apart from the army, the commies itself as a political party (PKI) had their own militias (5th elements, Gerwani, etc) they had weapons and also trained by TNI factions who supported PKI, designed to conduct guerilla operation to Federation of Malaya during Malayan Emergency/Malayan Confrontation/Dwikora Campaign.

One of my grandad's siblings was a high ranking officer in the ground forces in the military. He established communication lines across islands from East Java, he was the first to do so in ages(he was head of intelligence back then), it was back in the 40s-50s. Fast forward to the 1970s-1980s, he had bad hatred for Soeharto and their relation was at an all time low, luckily for him, he was only exiled/banished to New Caledonia.

It was a kind of civil war situation, for some communist opponents mostly Nahdhatul Ulama and Anshor community, it was a kill or to be killed moment. There were incidents where the communists did massacred muslim leaders and community because the muslim community was the main opponent of the PKI’s ideas of land reform. The communist was very strong a that time that the NU were losing and unable to fight back.

The grandson of Aidit's brother, Vico, who is now a famous standup comedian said that when the military moving his grandpa and other suspected communists on a bus to a prison, the military stopped the bus in the middle of the road and said that they (the convicted) can go out and pee first if they want to. Around 50% of the people on the bus went out and pee and ended up shot dead by the military which turns out to only be an excuse to make it as if they were trying to run.
The rest who survived ended in prison without trial for the next 30 years until the fall of the Soeharto regime. Keep in mind that all of this happened in the 60s, the era of Elvis presley and the Beatles.

Let's be honest here, Soeharto fully knowing about the 30th September PKI coup plan, and his pretension of co-conspirator, makes the most sense. He's the only high ranking official left behind, there is not even a kidnapping attempt on him as one of the high ranking military General.
Considering that the PKI army left him as the highest ranking alive, means that he pretends to cooperate with the PKI, before finally revealing his true position after the PKI coup army managed to take over the radio station and broadcasted their guiltiness of attempting a coup. Because by that point, Soeharto got the full legitimacy and blessing from Soekarno and the majority of the people of the country to crack down on the PKI for their coup attempt. And then by the time Soeharto himself shows his own plan to overthrow the President, it's already too late because most of the power are already under his control and he already got the Soekarno surrounded.

Personally, while I think that the witch hunt and massacres are completely unnecessary, aside from those on PKI leaderships and millitary communist sympathisers, the crack down of organized communism in Indonesia itself is a necessary thing. I'm not capitalist or communism hater, but we got to admit that almost every communist parties around the world end up making a coup that turned their country into an almost fake democracy where everything under one party dictatorship. Once communist party take the throne, it will be hard even for democracy to elect any other parties.
Also, Aidit and many of his fellow PKI learn about communism from Russia. So it's to be expected that they've been planning to forced a take over from Soekarno and the nationalists. That's probably why it's rather easy for right-wing people like Soeharto that's backed by the CIA to tricked and rushed the PKI into revealing themselves. He's dead you're referring to his brother Sobron Aidit. He moved to France and opened a restaurant there. Sobron Aidit was also a prominent writer and poet during the Old Order era in Indonesia. He spent many years in exile in Paris and passed away at the age of 73.

Is she of Chinese-Indonesian descent? If so, her hatred probably does not stem from the events mentioned in this video. Chinese-Indonesians were not specifically targeted as PKI members; in fact, many PKI members were native Indonesians. However, there was another event in the 1990s, also under Soeharto's regime, that resulted in numerous victims within the Chinese-Indonesian community. I understand a lot of resentment among Chinese descendants here in Indonesia because of the dark history in the 90's.

I am Indonesian, my father told me that my grandfather was killed by communist supporters during the 1948 rebellion because at that time my grandfather was a landlord. then he fled to another city to go to school, then he continued his studies. Long story short, while at school he was adopted by a kind-hearted person who turned out to be a military officer who wanted to have a son. After several years of being adopted, my adoptive grandfather was killed by an unknown person during the September 30 movement. My adoptive grandfather's body was returned, only his head was wrapped in a table cloth. when my father told the story I remember my father holding back tears. he said I don't hate communists, he just wanted something like this not to happen again in the future.

Karena itu kita tak heran kalau Aidit sampai mengusulkan dibentuknya Angkatan ke-5, disamping Angkatan Darat, Angkatan Laut, Angkatan Udara dan Kepolisian, yang dipersenjatai dan dianjurkannya agar terdiri dari para petani dan kaum buruh. Semua itu tentu adalah persiapan ke Lobang Buaya, tempat penyembelihan dan pembunuhan yang ngeri dan di luar perikemanusiaan atas pemimpin-pemimpin Angkatan Darat. Jelas sekali hal ini menurut pola RRC, suatu hal yang sisa-sisa pikiran itu masih nampak dalam pola-pola Tri Panji dan Perjuta-nya sisa-sisa PKI latent yang nampak dari pemberontakan-pemberontakan Blitar (Jawa Timur) dan PKS/Paraku di Kalimantan Barat. Untunglah waktu itu belum sampai terbentuk Angkatan ke-5 itu. Tetapi usaha-usaha Aidit ke arah perebutan kekuasaan makin hebat sejak awal tahun 1965. Apa saja digunakan nya sebaik-baiknya. Saya ingat sekali, waktu PNI mengadakan kongres tahun 1965, tak lama sesudah itu PKI mengadakan Hari Ulang Tahun (HUT) pula. Semua pigura dan hiasan untuk Kongres PNI terus saja dipakai PKI untuk HUT nya. Pohon-pohon kayu, tembok-tembok, rumah-rumah orang, kantor-kantor, habis dicoreti gambar-gambar palu-arit. Hal ini mengingatkan kembali kepada cara-cara PKI di Delanggu waktu RI di Yogya dulu. Saya sudah merasa, kalau PKI menang, Soekarno malah akan disingkirkannya, bukannya diangkat. Bagi tiap orang yang tidak buta hati, pasti akan arif dia, ke mana suasana sedang berkembang dan apa yang suatu waktu pasti akan meledak dan akan mengagetkan serta membukakan mata setiap orang…. … Waktu itu yang saya lihat, bahwa satu-satunya yang sanggup menghadapi PKI hanya tentara, Angkatan Darat yang dipimpin oleh Jendral Yani… (Hal 61)
… Saya mendengar pertama-tama berita penculikan dan pembunuhan pimpinan Angkatan Darat dari Simatupang, pagi tanggal 1 Oktober 1965 dan bahwasanya Nasution lolos dengan lari melompati pagar pekarang belakang rumahnya dan bersembunyi di balik sebuah pohon di sana, serta berita bahwa anaknya yang bernama Ade Irma Suryani terbunuh. Waktu Wangsa Widjaja, Sekretaris saya datang, saya suruh mencek lagi mengenai berita itu. Kabar selanjutnya mengatakan bahwa Nasution setelah keluar dari persembunyiannya terus pergi ke Kostrad. Didapainya Soeharto sudah mengambil tindakan. Mula-mula Untung menguasai RRI, kemudian terdengar pidatonya dan pengumuman mengeani Dewan Revolusi dan sebagainya. Tetapi malamnya terdengarlah pidato Soeharto, selaku Panglima Kostrad, setelah ia merebut RRI kembali serta menguasai keadaan seperti semula. Reaksi batin saya pertama-tama mendenga itu, ialah bahwa in pasti PKI lagi…… (Hal 74)

….. Setelah orang-orang Islam tahu bahwa PKI mengadakan kup, tentara telah bertindak di bawah pimpinan Soeharto, maka rakyat pun ikut bergerak dan bertindak membantu tentara sampai hampir sukar untuk dikendalikan… (Hal 75)
…. Tindakan rakyat yang selama ini tertekan dan kemudian membalas tidak tanggung-tanggung, menunjukkan bahwa perkiraan Aidit itu tidak benar. Rakyat dulu yang dia kira di belakangnya, ternyata tidak sebanyak yang diperkirakannya. Hal itu disebabkan karena cara-cara Aidit selama ini ang didasarkan kepada pengerahan-pengerahan massa berbondong-bondong, disertai agitasi dan terror mental, sehingga banya orang hanya ikut-ikutan untuk mengamankan dirinya saja. Itulah akibat dari kenyataan, bahwa faktor pendidikan dan keinsyafan tidak didahulukannya, bahkan diabaikannya, dibandingkan dengan gerakan-gerakan agitasi dan pengerahan-pengerahan secarai beramai-ramai. Jadi prinsip-prinsip yang dianutnya itu belum berakar dan belum dimengerti orang banyak….(Hal 76)
…. Mestinya kader yang betul mengerti dan insaf dibina lebih dulu oleh PKI sehingga mencapai jumlah yang cukup besar untu mendukung massa yang dikerahkan itu barulah cukup kuat. Tetapi mereka telah merasa kuat dan bangga dengan massa ramai-ramai dan selogan-selogan serta tempik sorak di lapangan rapat-rapat terbuka yang sering dibikin seperti keranjingan. Tapi semuanya tanpa akar yang tertanam kuat dalam masyarakat. Jadi kalau dalam rapat-rapat umum dan pidato-pidato yang hebat, nampaknya rakyat setuju semua. Tetapi di luar itu rakyat sebenarnya jengkel. Ini kurang diketahui oleh PKI…(hal 76-77)

the violence is targeted mostly on Chinese Indonesian community and people who controls the means of production. it still left the mark to this day, communism is still denounced as a taboo and even a slight mention of it will trigger an overreaction.
i remember, my mother and some of my parent friends. tell the horror at 1960s. The sight of dead people lying on big roads or in villages has become commonplace. My friend was hanging out telling stories to me, "my parents said, in the statue area on the main street in front of the DPRD (people's representative council) office. There were once rows of corpses shot by PETRUS (mysterious shooter). another friend of mine also told me that his grandfather was JAGAL PKI or in English someone (the person) who the Butcher the PKI, he killed PKI with the machete. and my friend of Chinese-Indonesian descent who speaks Javanese once told me that in the 1960s Javanese people protected his grandfather because he was a good Chinese person, and that no one should touch this person. At that time, it was better to keep quiet than to talk none-sense, if you are slandered, you could die. joking about the PKI or being considered PKI, you could die too. even though there is no concrete evidence. I don't know the exact truth about this story, because it is told by word of mouth.

I don't wanna go into details as i don't wanna be on the receiving end of a staged accident one day, but our government is still equally if not more corrupt than it used to be during soeharto's era. While during those dark times, it was done from top to bottom, now it is done in broad daylight by basically almost every single person in the governing bodies where everyone could see from the bottom to the top. The way people normalise corruption in this country is just mindblowing, to say the least.
We are still being governed by people from soeharto's era. Most of them are either retired high-ranking cops or soldiers, so I'd say while the dictatorship itself has been gone for years, the remains of it are still among us. They're still living their best life, free from consequences of their messed up past

banyak yg ambil kesempatan, saat itu buyut ane dimintain tanah seluas 2 kali lapangan bola dgn ancaman kalau tidak memberi akan di "PKI" kan. jaman buram siapa yg berani untungnya ada satu anak buyut yg menyembunyikan petok aslinya. dan 15 tahun berikutnya dibawa ke pengadilan sampai 30 tahun baru memenangkan perkara tanah.
