  • When your friend sends you a clip that looks like this, you pack your car full of tools and drive straight to the parts store to pick up two new springs. Ideally while laughing at your friend for not noticing the problem for potentially hundreds of miles of driving. This type of failure on what otherwise looks like a fairly new spring is pretty uncommon, but for the mileage on this car - around 100,000 - it’s about time to replace them anyway.

Bout to do this on my 2014 F10, rear passenger spring broken, in 2 spots. Only clue was the occasional clunk that I initially assumed was a worn out bushing.
Glad to see I don't have remove the entire rear deck! 😊

Scary stuff those springs!! I've been stood in a friends garage before when the compression rods failed and the spring literally exploded past my ears at what seemed like light speed! And the noise is insane lol 🤣

You took the shaft off the ball joint because you were tightening it, not loosening it >_

YOu guys snapped the ball joint stud because you were doing it in the wrong direction

That's exactly what I saw him do. @1:39
Unbelievable. What's your guessing preload on the lower arm bush wasn't observed when tightening it back up?

I just got a 2010 5 series wagon that the previous owner lowered the rear. The guy I bought it from said they put on “short springs”. Having plenty of cars get fixed over the years, though Not by me…is that all I’d need to replace to bring it up to normal height? Or will there be other parts too. Just trying to get as much knowledge as possible before hand. Thx!

Lucky you haven’t got an F11 with adaptive drive. My rear shocks went at around 95k on my 530d and it cost me £800 each side and that’s with a local specialist not at a dealer. Shock in more ways than one😱
Little wonder so many people convert to springs and code the active suspension out, but although it’s not cheap it more than makes up for it in Sport and Sport+ mode. It drives like it’s on rails😁

Definitely going preloaded (coilovers). Compressing springs is silly and dangerous enough to not find out.
100k mi car you'll fare better replacing them outright.

I’m here because my rear passenger side shock is making a lot of noise😂 how much would I have to pay for a fix like this with a mechanic???

not necessary to jump on brake disc to attach lower 21 mm shock bolt. I did it alone and very precise. check from 29:16 - 31:57

Sorry but this is completely wrong way to do it. Never use suicide spring clamps, dangerous! You don’t need to remove trailing arm bolt. You just need proper working height and second person to twitch axle inorder to remove shock absorber. Please remove this dangerous video.
