This is an autofocus noise test to verify just exactly how bad is the noise on a Canon C200 setup with a NTG3 shotgun microphone attached to the camera. There's a lot of videos out there that talk about the lens autofocus noise in general terms across all platforms ie. sony, fuji, canon etc. without diving into the specifics of the setup. Some people say the autofocus noise isn't that bad while others say its horrendous.
I was unable to check the lens firmware but seeing as it was purchased in Q1 2020, I suspect it has the latest firmware version 2.02 which was released on 2019-02-21.
With the Rhode NTG3 microphone attached to the camera in the forward position, very little noise was picked up in the video. With this mic, the in video noise performance was on par with my existing Canon 16-35 F4 lens. I suspect lens adapters make the autofocus noise a lot worse on adapted cameras.

bro ive been looking for this answer for a while... THANK U THANK U THANK U! ......great Video!.... i know know this lens is a go!
This was awesome my man. I also was waiting for someone to address what to me seemed like the most basic question about this lens. Everyone just skips over it. Even that popular British reviewer who always has smooth jazz in the background. The Sigma's noise is definitely a problem for internal microphones. It's an old lens, so I guess it's lagging in technology.
The Canon's noise wasn't bad and I could see someone shooting with the onboard mic occasionally.
But the Sigma beats the Canon in the strictly visual aspect of autofocusing. It has a smoother look as it locks focus. There's a slight zoom effect, but it's acceptable. Whereas the Canon is jumpy and more jarring when attempting to lock focus, and there's too much of a zooming effect.
Thanks, again!
Very helpful. I just got this lens and when using it with a Rode videomicro mic the autofocus noise is still loud. Looks like shotgun is the way to go
Feels like I"m watching a ASMR video with the noise test sections. Haha. Joking aside. Thanks for the demo.
Another superb video. I've always wondered why no one looks at the noise from the autofocus and here you are, having done that too. Haha
great video...that noise doesn't sound bad at all with the external mic. With the lens adapted to my Fuji XT3 using the Fringer adapter + internal mic, it is horrendous. With the Rode Video micro, it still pics it up. Tested it with a lav mic at vlogging distance and lav picks it up. Kinda disappointing bc everything else about the lens is amazing to a beginner like me. Stills and close focus distance are great. Good excuse to pick up an NTG3 now, Lol.
Appreciate the video test 🙌🏽
Great tests! Thank you for posting this.
I've returned a 105mm lens f2.8 just because of a gear-like noise when autofocusing. The sound was louder. I don't know if it's normal or I've got a broken one.
thank you so much!!! do you think that with a 200d (SL2 in Brazil) with a rodeo video micro will it have the same result?
This is a great video. Thank you for posting this!
Love this test man. Thank u for this.
Thanks, was looking to buy this for my canon 90d.
Sigma noise that everyone is talking about is when you use it in conjunction with the MC11 adapter on Sony e-monut.
No, the noise, as demonstrated here, is clearly from the lens during autofocus operation. There is a 1 to 1 comparison with the Canon lens.
I just bought the Sigma 18-35mm brand new. And I tested the AF and it’s not loud whatsoever! It isn’t silent, but you can barely hear it. Maybe Sigma added a better AF motor on the newer 18-35mm ???
For most things it’s not too bad. It at its worst when you’re in continuous autofocus tracking a subject that’s slowly moving towards or away from the camera. IMO they really should release a version 2 with a better autofocus motor. It’s been almost 7 years since this was first released.
So I just bought a sigma 24mm 1.4 art lens for my canon R6. I noticed the noise while it was auto focusing. I thought something was wrong with the lens. I only have RF lenses and this is my first Sigma lens. So I assume that this is normal for the lens to make that noise while it’s focusing? I was thinking about returning the lens because I thought the noise was not normal.
great video, keep it up !!!!

C200 SETTINGS? THANKS!
WHAT LENS WERE YOU USING FROM 5:40 TO END? THANKS!
im curious about this too
Bobby Bobby!! Try and Guess who this is? You a camera and Video nerd?

@@bobbystefano Nice!! So you are a photo and video nerd as well. Love it.
RHode Mic? Rode
Would it make less noise hand held?
Nah, it’s the internal gears.
Hello, I just bought the lens and the viltrox for my gh5, is it normal to hear it inside the lens when the aperture changes?
Apaterture changes are louder than actual focus changes in my lens.
Do you use your 18-35mm more or your 16-35mm f4 more?
Ever since getting the 18-35 f1.8 I’ve been using that exclusively. It’s an amazing little lens.
This may be a dumb question but I have the canon T3i and autofocus works on taking pictures but doesn’t work for when I’m taking video? Would you know the solution to this problem. Thank you!
Did you set the autofocus for continuous autofocus while in the video mode?
SuprUsr Stan um no I will have to figure that out. I read somewhere T3is can’t do video autofocus but I don’t think that’s true.
I believe the T3i doesn’t offer AF in video mode
Mine has an ever so slighty tiny slip on the focus ring when manually focusing with this lens. Does your copy has that too? Thanks!
No noticeable slip in mine.
@@SuprUsrStan Does it have a tiny 'clicking' sound when rotating the focus wheel?
Did you keep the lens?
Yeah most of my videos since this one was with the sigma lens. It works great for c200.
