Fellow Irish UA-camr here. Smashed the subscribe button. Where would you recommend I look to pick up one of these second hand? Is it a good lens for just sit down talking to the camera videos or are there more suitable options? Thanks man.
Hey Paddy! Cheers for that. I was already subbed to you. Great vids. I think it's one of the best all round lenses but it depends on the camera. For the Canon apsc series or gh5 with apeedbooster it's great but a 24-70 on a full frame is probably a better all round option. Especially something with stabilisation. This particular lens is heavy and metal but prone to going very stiff in the focus ring if it takes any kind of bang. Buying new is better if you can but maybe see what's out there on adverts and done deal. I'm vat registered so buying new is sometimes better for me. Hope this helps! H
Hey guys, new video of one of the most popular lenses out there. Popular for a reason! This isn't a technical review but moreso a 'user experience' video based on having this bad boy in my camera bag for the last 5 years. Let me know what you think!
wow! ur 'user experience' kind is far better than those accurate technical reviews. your works also very nice to see. nice dynamic range and modern grading. u deserve more than 400k subs soon brother.
GREETINGS!!! Hugh, I am planing to use the ultra version with sigma1835, even leaving them together when not in use because of the thing they say about broken pins and all that. What is your opinion on the metabones adapter in terms of reliability? would it last for years like a lens?
Great video, I love the end where you point out what so many don't realize, it's not the camera or lenses, it's the person behind it that makes great video or photos.
one thing to keep in mid is that for video, most cinematogphers stay below 35/40mm on s35 (apsc) sensors. Most beginners likes to use long lenses because there is less for them to worry about (and of cousres the shallow dof), I was there for a while, but the more I shoot, the more I relize mastering a wide lens gives way better resulte, so don't see why the zoom range is a problem.
For someone who focuses mainly on music videos (with a G85, Viltrox EF-M2, and Ronin-M) I find this lens my favorite. Yes it's heavy, and before buying, I was concerned that the zoom range wouldn't be enough, but after real-world use, this thing is perfect for me. For Ronin-usage, I've only ever used this lens, but sometimes I'll switch to my Tokina 11-16 when I need wider tripod/handheld/shoulder rig shots. Thanks for the long-term review!
Hi Casey, great information of this lens.Would you recommend this lens for my Nikon D3300. I am looking for the best sharpness film quality lens I can get and to use for great music videos? Thanks.
It's a heavy baby, dropped mine 1-2 feet (30 centimeters) into a metallic basket and it messed with my zoom-ring which is now a little glitchy. You'd think it's robust but it's really not. Great lens though, as long as you don't play basket with it.
I love your comment, it's not the lens but the person behind the lens. I love the Sigma 18-35mm paired with the Pocket Cinema Camera. Been contemplating whether to upgrade to the 4k pocket cinema camera
Thanks a lot. Yeah, the new pocket camera is a no brainer. I will say though, that shooting with a camera like the GH5 which has a flip screen and image stabilisation on the sensor is really fantastic. In terms of 'run and gun' style hand held shooting. It's really changed the way I work.
Great review, I like the fact you've used and lived with the lense for some time and had the opportunity to try it out on a bunch off different cameras
I got the Sigma 18-35 a few months ago along with the .71 Metabones speedbooster for my BMPCC4K. Personally, I love it. I've heard some people say that it's too sharp. But, I'd rather have too sharp than too soft. But, I don't see anything wrong with the footage I've shot as far as sharpness goes. Anyway, it was fun watching your experience with it.
Hello mate, I'm too interested in Sigma 18-35 for my BMPCC4K, but I hear there is a huge issue when focussing cause of short throw (Justin Phillip mentioned in the 18-35 vs Rokinon cine lens test) of the lens, So what are your thoughts ?
Oh wow, I'd love to ask your advice. I'm a newbie with BMPCC 4k. I'm using the same gear as yours, which is Metabones T CINE Speed Booster ULTRA 0.71x + Sigma 18-35. I like all the scenes I shot indoors, but not outdoors. When it's not sunny enough, the footage becomes blurry. Yesterday, I couldn't even focus on some leaves on a tree despite the distance between the camera and that tree was good. I am not sure what is going on with my camera set. I shot 23.95 fps, 180 shutters, 400 ISO, 5300 WB, and 13 tints, but I got blurry and flat footage. So frustrating!
Panasonic is basically going to be coming out with the Micro 4/3rds version of the Sigma 18-35 later this year. The 10-25mm f1.7. Which is very close in equivalent focal range to APS-C.
Cheers Tomas, great lens! likewise with your own vids, I'm always interested in what new gadgets you're reviewing as they always seem to be really cool.
Thank you so much for this Real, and honest review. So insightful for when you need to pick a lens to use ! Cannot wait to try this out on my next Trip coming up !
Hi Hugh. This review is extremely detailed composed into all components. Highly professional approach and information oriented presentation of the material. This presentation is nevertheless designed more for semi-professionals who are no longer amateurs, but have already moved to the next stage in there hobby of photography and I staying in this category. So, I would like to ask you as a professional, about proper choose of a lenses for landscape photography, especially night photography. My current lens is Canon EF-S 15-85 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM, which I am very pleased with. But it's time to change the level. My choose is standing on three lenses Sigma 18-35 f1.8 DC HSM ART Canon 16-35 f/4 L IS USM Tamron 15-30 f/2.8 DI VC USD And my currently used camera is Canon 90D It's not difficult to explain that all good things and hobbies interest ended by the credit card, but anyway the technical characteristics are much higher. Thanks in advance
Hey. I literally have the same setup as you. I’m also looking to get the sigma 18-35 with my canon 90d. Kindly let me know if you were able to make the purchase and how it’s been for you so far if you have
Sean Mac Media | @ThisIsSeanMac it doesn't. This is a lens for crop sensor bodies with APSC sized sensors (which are 1,5 times smaller then 35mm sensors). So you have to take the focal length which is written on the lens and multiply it by 1.5. then you know the equivalent in full frame terms. That's why a 24-70 lens for full Frame is a 16-55 for APSC.
I love love love this lens. Also I’ve had it for along time. I shoot live music photography and now videos for the past year. At first I loved the lens (if) it hit focus on my Nikon d 7000. Was going to sell it then I got the Nikon d 500 and everything changed. It is my hands down most used lens. And yes it does front and back focus but not very often on the d500. The older d7000 was atrocious. I have a SteadyCam Merlin w/the arm and vest and this is on that system 99.999% of the time.
Thanks for the comment. Yeah, it sure is a great lens. If this lens was a little wider and could zoom in a bit more, it'd never come off my camera. Super lens, the focus can be a pain but not for video.
Great video. Please please please do one on the 50-100. Especially on, like, its real world use. I have the Sigma 18-35 and absolutely love it. I suspect that like many, I can't quite pull the trigger on the 50-100, because of it being double the weight - not much fun handheld. But I can't quite take my eyes off it either! Would really be interested in your thoughts.
Agree, I also have the 50-100mm. I actually like the 50-100mm the most out of all my lenses and it's the only one I bough second handed ever... My main gripe with it, is that is a very very fat lens which means it's not easy to travel with (paired with a D500) and lacks image stabilization, which is more relevant than in the 18-35mm case. I use The 50-100mm in concert photography if I know I can get close enough to the stage and kids parties and portrait sessions.
My son knocked over my tripod with the gh5 and the sigma on it. Didn't crack anything but the focus has stiffened up and will not autofocus now. I thought about a dock to see if it would fix it but I doubt it. I don't have the $2-300 it may take to fix it so I have been strictly manual focus. Yep, one drop and its over as far as autofocus. My focus ring is very stiff now also.
Nice summary of the lens and it's capabilities! Been thinking of getting the GH5 for too long now and looks like this lens (plus booster as mentioned) might not be a bad starting point. Cheers!
Have a few canons already (18-55mm, 50mm, 70-250mm, 11-16mm) and some vintage lenses but worried about that M4/3 sensor. the speed booster seems to be a requisite for the GH5.
Cheers for advice! Yeah came across the viltrox booster when searching for cheaper alternatives to metabones. Do you use one? Any issues if so? Hard to justify spending €700+ for the metabones one.
This lens has massive focus issues when you use it through the viewfinder. It's inconsistent so impossible to fix through their USB dock or your camera AF fine tuning. SEND BACK YOUR COPY if yours has these issues because I've been through the hassle of returning it up to 4 times to Sigma themselves. They later blaimed my camera for the problem but it's only this lens that shows inconsistency. I now still have the lens with the same autofocus issues. I use it through liveview only.
hey...really waiting for this type of videos...for sigma 18-35 f1.8 good info about what i needed, last week ordered it on b&h, to india. thanks for this all efforts from 5yrs user. one more thing... can u give me lightroom preset or any info about where i will get those color profile or preset for images. i have really liked those faded oldie colors. its on 9:16 min & 9:23min. thank u very much sirr!
Lovely video. Thanks. I've had this lens for several years and unless I've been doing something catastrophically wrong, it's not parfocal at all. Wish it were.
Well I constantly shoot whilst zooming in and out. It depends on the depth of field you have and perhaps distance from subject. If you're a few feet or more away you should be able to pull in and out and maintain focus. To be honest I haven't done super accurate tests.
Cheers. It might get tricky if you're @ 1.8 and zoom from 18 to 35 and back. Try it. I just did once more to double check, and, yup, doesn't hold focus at all. Might be different if you're at f8 or more on a bright day, with ideal subject/camera spatial relationships etc. Thanks again.
Fantastic video. I love your production and 'low-key' approach versus shouting at the viewer. I would like to ask which lens and which light you used for this video?
Grand review. I snagged one 2 days ago for me C300 mkii..... Still packin the Canon f2.8 16-35mm vii tho. B&H foto had a 250$ off deal on monday.... couldn't resist. deadly review! tanks
Thank you for the video! I have a question here. I would really appreciate it if you could answer my question. The Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art has two functions: autofocus or manual focus. I'm using a Blackmagic 4k, which is known as manual focus. If I set the Sigma lens with autofocus, will it support my camera focus objects and landscape more easily? I like all the scenes I shot indoors, but not outdoors. When it's not sunny enough, the footage becomes blurry. Yesterday, I couldn't even focus on some leaves on a tree despite the distance between the camera and that tree was good. I used Metabones T CINE Speed Booster ULTRA 0.71x to support the lens.
Hey Hugh, I really enjoy your videos! I have a Sony A7iii and a Lumix GH5, Id like to buy the Sigma 18-35 for my Sony and do you know if there is an adapter to fit the Sigma (E mount) on to my GH5?
quick correction: just because the front doesnt move, doesnt mean it will stay balanced. the elements of the lens are still moving inside, they have just put a cover over it so you dont see it, and dust stays out. with that said, many lenses will employ a dual element focusing system so the CG stays put, like 70 - 200 f2.8s since they would be uncomfortable to use if the CG kept wildly moving back and forth, but this isnt guaranteed.
also... never be fooled by any metal lens. the fact is, metal is heavy and deforms. take any steel pipe and drop it on pavement. at the very least you will see a ding. then do the same with a poly carbonate pipe. its lighter, so at the most you might see a scratch. heavy metal lenses work against themselves in durability. Nikon gets knocked on a lot for their plastic prime lenses. but they are made of polycarbonate (Extremely impact resistant) and are light. they just bounce. meanwhile, a heavy metal lens will dissipate energy much less efficiently, and will almost certainly transmit some energy to focus mechanisms. which, if they are made out of the metal gears, are more likely to end up with a marred tooth than a nylon gear. tl;dr plastic bounces, metal dents.
Love this lens on my Canon 80D. I am mainly photos and haven't gotten into video but for portrait shots, landscape and nightscape shots this is the lens. Solid build, sharp focus and nice bokeh. As for durability: I left my camera on the car roof when storm chasing as I went to move the car forward a bit the camera slid off and as the rig is lens heavy it fell to the road lens first. The UV filter shattered as did the lens hood (had it sitting on the lens backwards for storage) and a small piece of the plastic on the front of the lens busted off. The lens still worked w/o issue and repair was just under $240 CAD (lesson learned).
@@HuFilms lens seemed to work without issue after the fall but to be safe and to prevent further issues I stopped using it and sent it away for repair at authorized service tech. It was repaired, calibrated, firmware updated, etc. I will certainly take a closer look at the smoothness of the focus next time I get the camera in hand -- off top of my head I didn't notice any issues (of course now that you said this I am 2nd guessing :p ).
I had this lens since 3 years I use with sony a6500 with mc11 the af it's perfect the only downside it's the noise and heavy but excellent af and so sharp also now I'm using with a7lll but in apsc mode you loose some sharpness .
How noisy is the autofocus when using the internal camera microphone? Or a Rode on the hot shoe? Is there a lot of hunting, whizzing, clicking noises? Canon has a couple of "STM" lenses that are very quiet. I love that. Thanks, nice review!
Hugh, Just the video I needed to see. A review that evaluates the 18 to 35mm after awhile of use and mild abuse. I glad it has held up so well for you and confirms my plans for early 2019. I was at a beer and snacks event locally put on by a rental/retail shop with reps and products from Panasonic, Red, DJI, Sigma, SmallRig and a couple of others. The Sigma rep was showing mostly their cinematic primes, but he did have the 18 to 35 mm ART, that he pulled from the back and went over it with me. It was my first time going over it and later I checked their website with the programming cap available for a couple of presets. Quite the intelligent lens. Thank you for your thoughts and yes I sub'ed and liked. I'm sure you have a few tips that I can pick up on for future reference. Cheers from San Diego.
Hi... I am using a Nikon D3300. With Kit lens 18.55mm. Will the Sigma 18.35mm fit my camera Or should i stick with the kit lens... Many Thanks. [Rusty... South Wales]
The downside with this lens you didnt touch on is the extremely loud autofocus in video mode. Gets picked up by both the onboard mic / external shotgun mic as well. Can really end up ruining the audio capture
I guess I didn't touch on that because it never really affected me. I do the use off camera Mic or a lav. Also, there might be variations in loudness. Maybe some are louder than others not sure.
If you either care about using the on board mic or you care about auto focus... You have much bigger things to worry about in life hahaha... Couldnt think of a more amateur comment than auto focus and on camera mic...
Love the presentation....just wondering how it would work on the new Canon R5....Something you might consider talking about sometime mate. Thanks and cheers
Yeah, good point. When I bought the EosR I sold this lens. As it would only be suitable for shooting in 4k crop. Then when I bought the s1 also, seeing as it crops in 4k at 60, I really wish that I kept the lens as I shoot in 60fps a lot. As the Eos R5 is unlikely to crop then this lens may not be suitable.
Hello there, I see all over the place the specification of ''for Crop Sensor cameras'' (APS-C) Why ya'll specifing this, that means it wont work on my full frame ?
Im looking at a set of lenses I want to buy for my first ones. Sigma 18-35mm, Sigma 24-70mm, and Canon EF 70-200mm with the camera Canon EOS 77D. Would you recommend these lenses with the camera for a first camera and someone who wants to capture portraits, landscapes, buildings and on the sidelines some videos for vlogging and capturing surroundings.
Never really effected me as I didn't use it for vlogging what onboard mic. I always used a cine manual lens for that. Plus, I shot mostly manual focus anyway.
Without in camera stabilization, would it still be a great pick? (maybe with a glidecam?) Im planning on using it with a Canon 70d. Is it also good on full frame? .
unless you have shaky as fuck hands any normal person would be fine with it. I can use shutter speeds to about 1/20 sec and still not get hand shake so it kinda depends on the person even. and Mind you, with such a bright aperture I dont think u would even stoop so low with the shutter speeds so its not a huge issue at all.
Great Video! Very informative and great examples of what the lens can do. Can you please tell me the Cine lens that you are now using with the Ronin s? I also own the ronin and I’m looking for a good lens to pair with my Canon 80d or M50. Thank you!!!
The calibrating dock does nothing to help with the lens front and back focusing problem. If it was only front focus you could calibrate it but that's not the problem with the lens . It can back focus one shot front focus the next shot and be dead on the next . Even while you are in the process of calibrating the lens you can't get 5 shots in a row to be at the same focus point making it impossible to adjust properly . Just when you think you gave it adjusted dead on your next shot show a back focus or front focus of all the way to a 6 or 7 on your scale . After hours and hours of adjusting and never the same result 2 times in a row you just give up . Do this test . Take 10 shots and count how many are back focusing how many are front focusing and how many are in focus . Now do this test a 2nd time . with 10 more shots . Here is what going to happen the first of 10 might have 3 front focus , 3 back focus and and 4 in focus . the next set of 10 could be 5 front focus and 5 back focus with none in focus . Each set of 10 shots you take will be different no matter how many times you do the test they will never be the same results. This is how bad the focusing problem is .
Timely update, so thanks. I am planning for getting nikon z5. Will this lens combine well? Any other suggestions? Please recommend a good adapter for the combination. OR Sony a 6500 plus this lens? Strictly hobbyist
Hi! Thanks for video! Really useful. However I wonder if that would work on my canon 60d. I remember I got 50mm (f1.4) few years ago and I had problems with back focus so I exchanged to canon 50mm 1.4. I loved Sigma and its bokeh but i couldn't fix back focus. My budget is limited (big dream is 24-70mm) and I am looking for a zoom lenses with wider angle. I am a bit tired of fix lenses however still in love with 50mm, and 28mm. Any suggestions? I am sort of interested in Sigma 18-35mm but that's a bit different than what I've wanted. And getting Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 (reviews are rather ok) feels not the right thing also. Anyway, will be super grateful for an advise, 2months already and I can't decide what would be the best thing. I am a big fan of bokeh and light so don't want to go anything darker than f2.8.. And I dont have 2k :)
I’ve got the Fuji x-t3 right now and I’m thinking of swapping over to this lens rather than the Fuji lenses for video. As I’m main,y into video production. Think it’s a smart investment and what do you think of the Fuji x-t3 VS panasonic gh5?
I'm not sure but as the GH5 is kinda 'old hat' now and the XT3 is better for photography (I'm guessing) I would go with the Fuji myself. For change mostly.
Just discover your video and for me you're really doing the video super professional and intereset. I already got this lens and for me it's the best of my set :) And yes the 0.71X metabones is the nicest choice for this lens ! :) cheers from Switzerland!
Does it work on a full frame camera? Are there any cameras it won't work on? I'm buying it for a GH5s, but may get an S1H or an a7siii, or fx-6. I am just starting to know how much I don't know.
I only shoot stills photography, and even a though I mainly use a full framed camera for landscapes, I take my 7DII with me just so I can use this lens. It’s far superior to my Canon 16-35mm f2.8 II to such a point I never use the Canon lens. I have never had any front or back focusing issues, which I definitely had on the Sigma 150-600 Sport before using the hub. However, as I’m usually around f11 with this lens for front to back sharpness I wouldn’t notice it. I’m also usually on a tripod as well and as I always forget to turn off my IS it’s no loss to me I don’t have it on this lens. I have some pretty serious upper body difficulties, and I have no idea how many times I've dropped it. Pain equals clumsiness and that's the main reason I'm sticking with DSLRs. The only damage I've ever had is a broken petal on my lens hood. That happened when my entire tripod went over and it landed smack down on its face with a Canon 7DII that had the battery grip behind it. One issue I’ve heard of with videography is how noisy the AF is, again this isn’t an issue for me. One thing that is an issue the lack of weather proofing, but I'd had it about 3 years before I realised. An excellent review of your experiences with this amazing lens.
I have a 16-35mm IS, but since it fell to the floor the past week, I’ve been looking for some replacements, Sigma 18-35mm is one of my choices, but, what about durability?, autofocus and everything else?, I have the same camera as you, and my now broken 16-35mm was like a 26-55mm lens on the 7DMkII. It is good as a walk around or general purpose lens?, for doing some astrophotography?, what about sharpness at f/2.8?. My 16-35mm was sharp as fck at wide open, but i dunno if the sigma is like my old lens.
Ale Leiva I can’t speak for videography because I don’t do any due to my disabilities. As a photography lens it’s brilliant, it’s known for being equal to most primes at the different ranges. I frequently drop stuff and the only damage to this lens is that’s the hood has lost a petal when it landed face down when I knocked my tripod over.
Hi Hugh thanks for the info...thinking of getting the nikon version so I can use on my D500. Just got a Gh5, which speed booster will be best to go with it for low light etc. Thanks mate..
Hey! Thanks, sorry for late reply. I recommend the Speedbooster 'ULTRA' not the XL. The XL is slightly brighter but it's too wide for this lens and you can see a lot of vignetting moving around when shooting wide with 'ibis' activated.
Hi nice video, I have 90D with 10-18 mm and 50 mm, I want to buy another lens for video should I go for this one or any other recommendation, BTW I do have a gimbal.
Hi Hugh Sweeney, great information of this lens.Would you recommend this lens for my Nikon D3300. I am looking for the best sharpness film quality lens I can get or use for great videos? Thanks.
I actually sold this lens and moved to the Sigma 24-70 as I now use FF cameras. To be honest, most decent lenses will have plenty of sharpness for video. I shot with this lens a lot but looking back it limited me in terms of focal length. The results I get now for run n' gun filming with the 24-70 is far better to be honest. For photography as well. But if you shoot crop the 18-35 may still be the best option.
Nice video Hugh! I got this lens for my Canon 70D back in 2014 and was my daily driver for years. I too have the Genustech Solar Eclipse ND fader for video, but over the years I really HATED the autofocus noise of the lens, something that you didn't mention. Other than that, your video made me bring my old setup out of the closet where it collects dust since I upgraded to Sony's full frame system. How come you don't have Instagram?
ha ha, I sold mine last year and use the 24-70. Sharpness and brightness isn't everything. I found it frustrating using it on a ff cam as you keep forgetting it's only good at 35mm. It still probably vignettes a bit too.
With all due respect I know this is irrelevant but I just love your videos and how they look! I want to know what lens to use shooting car review ?? Thanks
The Sony is FF so definitely not. It would be a nice lens for the pocket but you'll need the Speedbooster. Unless they make an MFT. I've moved away from Speedboosters, I prefer to work with nothing between the glass and camera other than an adaptor.
This chat about your experience was great, I enjoyed. Regards!
wow! ur 'user experience' kind is far better than those accurate technical reviews.
your works also very nice to see. nice dynamic range and modern grading. u deserve more than 400k subs soon brother.
GREETINGS!!! Hugh, I am planing to use the ultra version with sigma1835, even leaving them together when not in use because of the thing they say about broken pins and all that.
What is your opinion on the metabones adapter in terms of reliability? would it last for years like a lens?
Took mine on a interrail trip and it fell down from a 1meter table. Directly on my uv filter, it survived without any issues. :)
Great video, I love the end where you point out what so many don't realize, it's not the camera or lenses, it's the person behind it that makes great video or photos.
literally the BEST review I've seen on the sigma 18-35mm, I ordered not long ago before watching this review hope I'll like this lens when it comes.
How’d you like it?
I actually did like the lense
Did he died ?
one thing to keep in mid is that for video, most cinematogphers stay below 35/40mm on s35 (apsc) sensors.
Thanks for the long-term review!
hi! i have a Lumix g85 as well and was thinking of getting this lense. What adapter do you recommend?
Hi Casey, great information of this lens.Would you recommend this lens for my Nikon D3300. I am looking for the best sharpness film quality lens I can get and to use for great music videos? Thanks.
It's a heavy baby, dropped mine 1-2 feet (30 centimeters) into a metallic basket and it messed with my zoom-ring which is now a little glitchy. You'd think it's robust but it's really not. Great lens though, as long as you don't play basket with it.
Hi!, great lens, i have it since 5 years old too ... Please! did you have any link where you buy the rubbers? (Zoom and Focus) Thanks!
I got them from a repair guy in Hahnel in Ireland. Not sure where else you can get them. H
I'm currently 3D printing them in custom sizes for all lenses. Email me at eyeilluminatemedia@gmail.com
Yeah, it outlived 4 of my cameras. I sold it a year ago though!
@@vishvanthjayaprakash3698 If you are worried about the short throw, Sigma has a Cine version with a longer throw
Great to see a fellow Galway man showcasing some great shots of Salthill and the Spanish arch. Great review on the sigma. Mighty work.
Panasonic is basically going to be coming out with the Micro 4/3rds version of the Sigma 18-35 later this year. The 10-25mm f1.7. Which is very close in equivalent focal range to APS-C.
This is the best video i saw ever about sigma 18-35.
I liked this channel 😍
Great video Hugh. Your first video you did so long ago was the video that sold me on this lens 👊
Cheers Tomas, great lens! likewise with your own vids, I'm always interested in what new gadgets you're reviewing as they always seem to be really cool.
Such an in-depth review with years of experience. Thanks!
No probs, thanks yourself for the nice words.
8:07 that OH SH!T! moment and the nice catch whew! 8:14
lol, this was staged but, the sad fact is that I did drop that lens before!
I wanted this but I got the Tokina 16-28mm f2.8 for my SL2 so I can use it when I go full frame, but I'm really glad you posted this, good work!
yeah, good choice. I'm considering the sigma 24-70 as it has stabilisation and might work well on the new Pocket Cam from BM.
Never seen any of your videos before, but this was a nice review/round-up. If only it were magically a full-frame lens. 😊
Great video Hugh, this is still my favorite lens of all time!
Yeah, it's a super lens. Over the last 5 years about 75% of content I've shot has been through this lens!
Thank you so much for this Real, and honest review. So insightful for when you need to pick a lens to use ! Cannot wait to try this out on my next Trip coming up !
Thanks, enjoy the lens, it's great!
My choose is standing on three lenses
Sigma 18-35 f1.8 DC HSM ART
Canon 16-35 f/4 L IS USM
Tamron 15-30 f/2.8 DI VC USD
And my currently used camera is Canon 90D
It's not difficult to explain that all good things and hobbies interest ended by the credit card, but anyway the technical characteristics are much higher.
Thanks in advance
Hey. I literally have the same setup as you. I’m also looking to get the sigma 18-35 with my canon 90d. Kindly let me know if you were able to make the purchase and how it’s been for you so far if you have
Thanks for your in depth thoughts and real world experiences. Appreciate the detail and practical applications.
QUESTION: @2:58 Why/how does this lense have a starting focal length of 29 on a Full Sensor and much wider on a Cropped sensor?
Sean Mac Media | @ThisIsSeanMac it doesn't. This is a lens for crop sensor bodies with APSC sized sensors (which are 1,5 times smaller then 35mm sensors). So you have to take the focal length which is written on the lens and multiply it by 1.5. then you know the equivalent in full frame terms. That's why a 24-70 lens for full Frame is a 16-55 for APSC.
i need a polarizer for your shirt, i cant tell if its dirty , or if it was made like that
I love love love this lens.
Can someone please tell me the alternative for Sigma 18-35mm f1.8? Like do they have the upgraded version of it? Or coming in the future?
Good question. They'll hardly update it but Sigma are always releasing new lenses so you'd never know.
Good quality video Hugh!
Hey, thanks Simon!
Would really be interested in your thoughts.
hey, thanks. Video for that is on the way. Great lens, but yeah, you're right it weighs a ton.
Same here! i would love to own this lens, but the weight is...
I want to buy this lens but still thinking to buy it or not,is it worth buying???
@@salaartariq7340 it's defintly worth buying! The 50-100 is an incredible good lens! but, it wheights a ton xD
My focus ring is very stiff now also.
yeah, most lenses can't handle a fall like that. my Tokina cine lens has same issue though the same fall would have totally destroyed the sigma.
Nice summary of the lens and it's capabilities! Been thinking of getting the GH5 for too long now and looks like this lens (plus booster as mentioned) might not be a bad starting point. Cheers!
Hey, thanks! If you have Canon lenses already, then yes but starting out as a first lens for the GH5 I'd question it.
Have a few canons already (18-55mm, 50mm, 70-250mm, 11-16mm) and some vintage lenses but worried about that M4/3 sensor. the speed booster seems to be a requisite for the GH5.
yeah, if you've that many lenses then go for it. Maybe read up on the Viltrox too @@stephenwardfilmmaker2075
Cheers for advice! Yeah came across the viltrox booster when searching for cheaper alternatives to metabones. Do you use one? Any issues if so? Hard to justify spending €700+ for the metabones one.
Good to see and support a fellow country man
Just about to buy this lens for film making also for myself
Great video. Thank you for sharing so much useful detail about this lens.
Thanks for the video. Further justification for my recent purchase of this lens for my GH5
What camera do you use it with?
@@medvedevfilms A Nikon D7100, but sold both the lens and camera
hey...really waiting for this type of videos...for sigma 18-35 f1.8

thanks for this all efforts from 5yrs user.
one more thing... can u give me lightroom preset or any info about where i will get those color profile or preset for images. i have really liked those faded oldie colors.

Thanks a lot. Are you on about the colour grading? if so, which parts of the video?
@@HuFilms its on 9min 16sec ...
& another frame is at 9min 23sec of this your video...
i liked those oldie popup colors...🙏
Great, down to earth review - Thanks Hugh !
Hey, thanks a lot. Appreciate the comment!
Fantastic video. I love your production and 'low-key' approach versus shouting at the viewer. I would like to ask which lens and which light you used for this video?
Lens used was a Samyang 12mm on the gh5 and my main light is a diffused Arri 650
Thanks! :)
@@HuFilms Isn't the Samyang 12mm a fisheye?
Nice Vid, thumbs up, got also the Lens..... (sound's not so good, to much sszz, maybe a d-esser would be fine)
Grand review. I snagged one 2 days ago for me C300 mkii..... Still packin the Canon f2.8 16-35mm vii tho. B&H foto had a 250$ off deal on monday.... couldn't resist. deadly review! tanks
I saw that deal. Made me want so bad.
Thanks for another great review, Hugh! Hope you have a Happy New Year and pease keep them coming!
Hey Hugh, I really enjoy your videos! I have a Sony A7iii and a Lumix GH5, Id like to buy the Sigma 18-35 for my Sony and do you know if there is an adapter to fit the Sigma (E mount) on to my GH5?
I’m not sure I’d get a crop sensor lens for a full frame camera personally.
Great video. I love the sigma 18-35 lens, it's my favorite one so far. Quick question. What slider this you use for this video? Looks really nice
Cheers Jeff, that's the Rhino slider evo. 24"
quick correction: just because the front doesnt move, doesnt mean it will stay balanced. the elements of the lens are still moving inside, they have just put a cover over it so you dont see it, and dust stays out.
with that said, many lenses will employ a dual element focusing system so the CG stays put, like 70 - 200 f2.8s since they would be uncomfortable to use if the CG kept wildly moving back and forth, but this isnt guaranteed.
also... never be fooled by any metal lens. the fact is, metal is heavy and deforms. take any steel pipe and drop it on pavement. at the very least you will see a ding. then do the same with a poly carbonate pipe. its lighter, so at the most you might see a scratch. heavy metal lenses work against themselves in durability.
Great review...looking to buy this for my Sony FS5 with the MC-11 Adapter.
Do you think 💭 this lens can replace 24mm 2.8 , 50mm 1.8 , and 85mm 2.0 ? . Have SL2 and weebill gimbal . Thanks
Hey Thank you for this review, the old one makes me buy one. I love it!
thanks a lot! :)
Wow, that sucks! Did the focus stiffen up? any bang at all and the focus looses it's smoothness.
I had this lens since 3 years I use with sony a6500 with mc11 the af it's perfect the only downside it's the noise and heavy but excellent af and so sharp also now I'm using with a7lll but in apsc mode you loose some sharpness .
thank Hugh for review this great len from sigma in past five years, what next lens they will produce such a great lens like this constant 1.8f.
Thanks a lot for the informative and interesting comment Terry. Sorry for the late reply!
Great video Hugh.
Thanks John!
@@ThePodcastStudioMiltonKeynes I wouldn't say it's that amateur a comment to be honest. When you use a quieter lens it's definitely better!
Nice review, just subbed! The 18-35 sigma is my go to lens also for film! Love it!
Oh my God this lens is 9 years old and still no one's rivaled it?
Love the presentation....just wondering how it would work on the new Canon R5....Something you might consider talking about sometime mate. Thanks and cheers
Yeah, good point. When I bought the EosR I sold this lens. As it would only be suitable for shooting in 4k crop. Then when I bought the s1 also, seeing as it crops in 4k at 60, I really wish that I kept the lens as I shoot in 60fps a lot. As the Eos R5 is unlikely to crop then this lens may not be suitable.
Hello there, I see all over the place the specification of ''for Crop Sensor cameras'' (APS-C)
Why ya'll specifing this, that means it wont work on my full frame ?
Yeah, it's a lens for smaller sensor cams.
@@HuFilms You can use it for the blackmagic 6k camera. Works perfect.
Yes. It will produce vignettes if used on full frame. But it's a perfect fit for super 35s (cinema cameras like canon c200 and blackmagic 6k)
I also have a canon , a 70d , and i hace the same question, hello :)
Very informative, but you forgot to mention the NOISE the autofocus makes...
Never really effected me as I didn't use it for vlogging what onboard mic. I always used a cine manual lens for that. Plus, I shot mostly manual focus anyway.
Without in camera stabilization, would it still be a great pick? (maybe with a glidecam?)
Im planning on using it with a Canon 70d.
Does video shooting need crazy micro adjustments with the usb dock? I have canon 80d which has great auto focus. Also I have crane V2
No, the lens's focus is very reliable with canon cameras.
Strictly hobbyist
it is for crop cam
Very informative video . Can I use this lense on canon 90d with weebill s gimbal? Will it support?
Thank you
I’ve got the Fuji x-t3 right now and I’m thinking of swapping over to this lens rather than the Fuji lenses for video.
@@HuFilms Thanks!

I already got this lens and for me it's the best of my set :)
And yes the 0.71X metabones is the nicest choice for this lens ! :)
cheers from Switzerland!
Nicest choice for this lens? what? lol...its a full frame lens so xl 0.64 is the better one
The viltrox speedbooster is the nicest choice ! A quarter of the price for the same quality.
Just found your channel. Great stuff. You won me over.
ha ha, thanks so much, really appreciate it!
Does it work on a full frame camera? Are there any cameras it won't work on? I'm buying it for a GH5s, but may get an S1H or an a7siii, or fx-6. I am just starting to know how much I don't know.
I use villtrox speedboster on my gh5 with this sigma and I have no issues with those edges....maybe you have to set right the focal lengh
Yeah, I have the speedbooster that's designed to reduce it by .64 as opposed to .71. I usually zoom in to about 22mm.
Thanks a lot. Great comment, I appreciate the feedback and info.
I gave my Canon 16-35mm f2.8 II to my brother as it always seemed inferior to the Sigma.
Thanks for the video! Do you think it is too good for a Canon 700d?
No it will be great for 700d any rebel cams
I have a Nikon D7200, should I get this one as my first good lens? Right now I have the 18-55, 18-105, 70-300 kitlenses, but no really good ones.
For photography? Possibly. It depends on what type of work you're doing.
Yeah, this is probably the best next lens to get. Then maybe a 24-70 or 24-100
Just found this and, it's what i needed to buy it so I will do so through your link. Thanks Hugh

Hey, glad you enjoyed. Thanks for the nice comment!
Great footages my friend, best of luck
great video, lovely voice. What gimbal are you using please . I have this lens on a canon 90d but my zhiyun crane 1 cant handle the front heaviness.
Great video. Just a quick question, did you replace the rubbers and filter thread yourself ? And if so where did you find the parts ?
You look like you have a very interesting life. Great video!
Hi Hugh Sweeney, great information of this lens.Would you recommend this lens for my Nikon D3300. I am looking for the best sharpness film quality lens I can get or use for great videos? Thanks.
The only jump scare I saw that worked well without sound was the demon face that pops up in the movie The Exorcist
But if you shoot crop the 18-35 may still be the best option.
using GH5 from 3 years, ordered this lens last week. Really looking forward to work on this
Good choice. Enjoy!
Mine makes noise too. I don't know what to do about it. My friend has that same lense and it is SILENT..
Amazing Review!!! So informative thank you - subbed
Its awesome lens for great times. I sold it and bought it three times. Its great it works on FF as 35mm f1.8 lens.
ha ha, I sold mine last year and use the 24-70. Sharpness and brightness isn't everything. I found it frustrating using it on a ff cam as you keep forgetting it's only good at 35mm. It still probably vignettes a bit too.
@@HuFilms It doesnt. I make 3:2 photos with it. I dont like zooms. Its lazy shoting for me. But nice choise. 24-70 is good lens
I am planning to buy an 80D with this lens. Would you say it is the better decision instead of buying three prime lenses?
Would you recommend buying this lens for a 80d? I always wanted a strong lowlight 35mm for photography. Great vid btw
I would yeah, it was great on my 80d also
Hello, also for a 70d ?
With all due respect I know this is irrelevant but I just love your videos and how they look! I want to know what lens to use shooting car review ?? Thanks
Hi Hugh do you recomend the Sigma 18-35 F1.8 for the Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Câmera 4K or for the Sony A7III
The Sony is FF so definitely not. It would be a nice lens for the pocket but you'll need the Speedbooster. Unless they make an MFT. I've moved away from Speedboosters, I prefer to work with nothing between the glass and camera other than an adaptor.
Excellent review. Thanks!!
Great vid!!! I love my 18 - 35... Liked & subbed👍👍👍
