This performance is so incredible. They’re so locked in and perfectly in sync with each other. I’d be hard pressed to find a band that does it like this anymore. Rush forever
Driving home from college years ago, there was a line of awesome thunderheads across the sky ahead. Lightning in the clouds made them glow one at a time, and I realized why they are called thunderheads: they looked like a line of huge purple, carved busts. I realized I had Permanent Waves in the car, and blasted Jacob's Ladder while I drove through the storm. It is still one of my favourite songs.
Such a great song. On one level it's a brilliant depiction of a storm followed by sunlight breaking through the clouds. Or it could be the moment when you realise that although everything's going to s***, life still has a savage beauty to it.
2112, A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, then Moving Pictures…… probably the greatest music ever written in a 5 year period! Honestly, just mind blowing how amazing those albums are. Long live RUSH1
And think of how far they came after Neil joined: they released two albums in 1975 and matured to the point where they released their first masterpiece, 2112, in 1976.
Grew up in Canada … so I’ve had Rush in my life since the mid 70’s and I’ve seen them 17 times … that’s 17 concert shirts (I collect ticket stubs and t’s). Wife surprised me after Neil passed by having them all framed: t shirt with ticket stub x 17. Made me cry. Coolest media room ever now.
"The clouds prepare for battle" the best opening line of any song in History... Every major battle in the History of Men has been decided by the Weather.. Mother Nature does what she does, and we are to only watch it in it's magnificant Glory, life and death decided by her...
I wouldn’t say it was this song. It’s more The Spirit of Radio and Freewill. Permanent Waves was definitely an album that caught many fan’s attention though.
I found Rush back in 2006 when I was in high school. The recession made it too hard for me to afford concert tickets at such a young age when they played in Milwaukee. But you know what I'm 31 now and still rocking out to the most badass 3 guys from Canada 🤘🤘🤟✌️
Pick out a favorite RUSH song better than all the rest. I challenge you - I dare you. You cannot. My personal favorite and masterpiece of all their work that demanded that I be a devoted RUSH fan for the rest of my life was the opening intro of 2112. Every true and dedicated RUSH fan "KNOWS" exactly where they were at - and who they were with the first time they ever heard the beginning opening of 2112. I guarantee it!!! Long live RUSH! May your music forever echo into eternity!

Glad to say I saw over 16 Rush shows & they performed this song at almost all of them. The best band live of my generation by far. R40 in Atlanta, Tampa & Charlotte were memorable shows. I knew it was the last tour & so hard to say goodbye!! Thanks for posting!!!
Rush's best song. Been listening to it since 1980 and it still bewitches me. Unfortunately they never visited Norway as far I can remember but yet one of the greates band to. Part of the soundtrack of my life sinve early 80s.

I'm 66. Yes, you read that right. I remember getting "All the World's a Stage" on 8-track, when it came out. When I heard the guitar echo on "Anthem", I was hooked. For me Alex with the different sounds and chords he came up with was the reason I became a Rush fan. The different spacey chords of Jacob's Ladder is another perfect example. Alex never got enough credit for the success of this band, IMO.
I love this version of the song... For the most part I really prefer them to follow the studio version note for note, but Neil comes out of the slow section in an odd time signature that sounds so badass, and then goes back to playing things generally note for note. So tight, really wonderful composition by all three...
I've got this song just about memerized! Good to know out there guitarists are finding it challenging. Started drum lessons a few months back and today started working on the intro section of the drum part. Having a blast! Good luck to all of you Rush loving musicians.

That synth part, starting at 3:33, is so awesome. Such an atmospheric piece of music. So other-worldly. Iron Maiden, at the beginning of "To Tame a Land", is also that type of galaxial musical piece. It is awesomeness on a grand scale!
I got to hear that song a few times and during the filming of their "Moving Pictures" tour on March 27, 1981, at The Forum in Montreal, Canada. It was a mind-blowing experience and to be part of that "live" album.
Not only does it sound great, but it FEELS INCREDIBLE to play (especially when you rotate through other time signatures over it and improvise a bit in those time signatures). It is like rhythmic cocaine to drummers, why we get so excited by Peart's incredible drumpart composing. It is the highest high... your body feels like it is on a rollercoaster.

Me too with my brother who passed.
What show was this?
For those of us who had the privilege of seeing Rush live we are forever grateful. Their legend will live on forever and inspire new bands yet to come
about 80 times... what a band. Greatest power trio to ever walk the face of the earth. Period.
I sadly never got the chance to...
Forever grateful i saw them 5 times. First in 1976 and last on the 40th anniversary tour. Greatest 3 person band ever, no question.

It was the crowd favorite when I saw R40 at Auburn Hills, MI. A few tears were shed by me. I hadn't heard them perform it since 1980.
This is, without question, the DEFINITIVE version of this song! such a maturity in this redemption
