The Kindle has a 6-inch display with a surface area of 17.22 sq. inches. The Kindle Paperwhite and Signature Edition have a 7-inch display with a surface area of 23.54 sq. inches. So, the Paperwhite models have a display that is 36.7% larger than the Basic Kindle.
I for one don't like the bigger size of the paperwhite, it makes it more difficult to fit in my pockets. That's why I'm keeping my 10th gen Paperwhite for as long as I can.
Sounds to me that their intention was to make an e-reader for when you are relaxing in your home (PW) and the other for when you are commuting, in a crowded area, etc.. (basic)
I got the basic, half because, like you, I pretty much fell in love with the matcha color. I also had a Paperwhite 2021 for a while, but thought I’d like a smaller device this time around. I love this little thing. I also have a Kobo Libra Colour and I think I’m really happy with this duo for all my reading needs.
The PW looks sharper during the manga comparison. I love that. I read a lot of manga and though a kindle isn’t an iPad mini 6, a sharper image kindle appeals to me.
This video is the clearest comparison between basic and paperwhite I've watched. I prefer basic just because of the feeling of holding in the hand, although Paperwhite has the better speed of page-flipping
I upgraded my 10th gen Paperwhite to the new Signature Edition primarily because I wanted that bigger screen and I’m really enjoying it so far. A lot can be said for having a small ereader but personally I just wanted a little bigger screen. Mine is the metallic jade green which also looks really nice. Overall it was worth the jump from the gen 10 to the new gen 12.
Amazing review! I was thinking the basic Kindle before this review. Because the basic seemed to have a whiter screen. But after watching your comparison carefully, I will be going with the new Paperwhite. Thanks for the amazing review!
Basic kindle 2024 is amazing, I had both latest 7 and 6 inches at home to compare and the Paperwhite went back to Amazon. I never seen a screen so close to real ink than those of the basic new kindle, I think is the same that the one on the Paperwhite but despite of Amazon effort with the extra coat to make it visually transparent, it is noticeable less sharp. Even on your video is easy to see, in reality the experience is super relaxing to the eyes. Hope e-ink continue to improve and e-readers won’t become kind a tablet like Chinese ones: the best thing an e- reader has is non distracting lecture!

I got the 2021 Paperwhite like 2 weeks before the 2024 was released and I cannot return it and get the full refund because I used it a lot, nice to know that there are not a lot of significant differences. The Paperwhite is way beter for reading manga than the basic.
What do you mean whit used it a lot? Does is have signs of use or what ?

@Claudia-ff3up well I pretty much carry it everywhere and it's the green one so the rubber thing gets signs of use out of nothing. Also here in my country you only get the full refund if you didn't open the box.
Great comparison. It seems like that the Paperwhite is not a more advanced version of the basic. They each have something I would like the other one to have. I prefer the sunken screen for the higher contrast as well as the coloured front of the basic. But I also like the warm light addition and the bigger screen size of the paperwhite. The jade backing is not going to be noticeable with a cover unfortunately. You may also want to edit/proof your videos though as you have some interesting contents in your books shown 😂
Im excited to get the Kindle Matcha just because of the color.😅. I already the 11th Gen Paperwhite though. I just need a smaller one I guess.😅 also I appreciate the speed bump though do we really need it for turning pages?
There's something you say in the review, about paperwhite having the latest 1300 carta... Are we sure the new base matcha has not the same? the amazon page actually state a better contrast other than more brightness, and it would makes sense if they upgraded it. I think we are in need of a comparison between matcha and clara bw to be completely sure, since that one is a sure carta 1300 with recessed screen.
After some research, I've found that the smaller screen of the basic is BOTH its strength and weakness, depends on what the user prioritizes on. If easy daily portability is crucial, Basic's 6 inch is great. If bigger font, water resistance, and dark room reading are what you need, go for Paperwhite. I just purchased the Basic because I love the Matcha green color and the plastic backing that will free me of worries that it gets scratched.
Previous Paperwhites had a rubberized-like back plate that eventually became sticky and very dust and scratch prone. Is the back on this new version the same as that or is it now a different material?
The E ink reader market is undergoing a boom. Amazon has stepped into the game with some incremental features and a Colorsoft. But its competitors are doing much better. While Amazon is relying on its ecosystem and large captive audience to leverage sales, its competitors have to do much better to take away market share. In my opinion, it makes little sense for an 11th generation Paperwhite owner to go for the 12th generation one. But a switch to Color is a much more viable option. Thanks for the wonderful video. Which e ink reader would it make sense to buy - the Colorsoft, the Kobo Libra Color, the new Boox or the Ink pad 3? TIA.
I’m starting to think I’d actually like the larger screen. My eyes are generally good, but I do find it more comfortable looking at slightly larger text, so I could just bump that up slightly. Also the text is a lot sharper than my 2019 (I think 10th gen) Kindle basic. I’ve never really read that much, but I’m starting to now. It’d also be nice to have USB-C. It’s not a deal breaker though. Just a bit of a hassle. I’m happy enough with my current Kindle for now, but it’s not going to last forever. We’ll see how the battery copes. The glow light looks like a big improvement too. My only real complaint is a lack of a metal version now they seem to have ditched the Oasis.
@@evelynwoolston7 I wouldn’t be surprised, since most things have been dropping in quality as planned obsolescence seemingly gets worse. I have no experience of keyboard era kindles though.
So what's the battery life? Both battery percentages went down by 2 during this video, we seen the battery percentage for 11 mins, so working it out, I'd guess it'll be 10 hours, might as well stick with my phone.
I’d be interested in seeing a comparison of the new Paperwhite to the Nook Glowlight 4 Plus, which has a 7.8 inch screen. I recently purchased the Nook (with the 10% B&N member discount) and I really like it. It’s definitely slower than the Kindle to respond to screen touches as you navigate through the menus, etc., but otherwise provides a great reading experience.
I have watched what feels like a million reviews and I still cannot decide which to get. The issue I am having is that I love the features of the paperwhite (warmth, auto brightness, etc) but I prefer the size of the "basic". Help meeeeeeeee 😅
I always use a cover with my Kindles so the colour really isn't important. I like the larger screen but it makes it harder to fit in my handbag. Although I liked the idea of a back-light, I very rarely use it. automatic light adjustment was the first thing I switched off; I'd rather choose a light setting that suits me. The BIG advantage of the PW is its (claimed) waterproofing. I don't drop it in water but I feel relaxed if I need to read when rain might splash on it or when I'm drinking tea

I'll be getting kobo 7 in for the same recessed screen i have kindle paperwhite i bought last year and I hate reading on the flushed screen.ill use the basic on the go and away from my desk.
Ive got the 2022 basic kimdle and the 2021 papwerwhite. I read on the basic more. Would it be silly to trade in my paperwhite and get the new Matcha colour kindle basic? i can use the black one when im out with my mum and then use the green one out and about when im on my own or with friends. the trade in with the paperwhite is £30 in the UK. is it silly to have 2 basics?
