Hey,, welcome to the Kobo Family. Quick tip: if you look in your Device Settings, under Energy Saving and Privacy, there is a check mark to disable "Automatically sleep and wake up". Turning that off will prevent your magnetic pop socket from triggering the power.

Just as an explanation: The ability to put the Kobo to sleep or wake it up with a magnet is a feature so that covers/protectors can be constructed that will put the device to sleep when you close them and wake it up when you open them. There are a number of e-readers, tablets, and phones that have this kind of feature. As noted by rashkae1 it can be turned off on this Kobo.

I also have both devices. I bought the Kobo mostly for the buttons, and not necessarily for the color. But I enjoy the color. But here is something so tiny, but thrills me beyond belief. Bookmark a page by tapping the top right corner and it just kind of dog ears it. It’s the cutest thing. I saw it mentioned on someone’s video after I purchased it and it’s the tiniest most insignificant feature that low-key means the most to me 😂

This shown basic way of ussing the kobo is exactly like my favorite e-reader App: EraRead. I use just marking sentences and putting page tab I see my page progress so yeah it is App but looks similar to that Kobo. Library Options would be new and expanding on my now state. Canadian Kindles cannot take advantage of seamless integration with Overdrive/Libby. Also, Canadian Kindles have Bluetooth disabled, so Audiobooks are out of the question. These two advantages, together with the buttons make Kobo the obvious choice for me. Lots of other features make me appreciate the Kobo, such as a drag of the finger down the left side to adjust backlighting, swipe down for the last three items, seamless integration with Google Drive/Dropbox/Pocket, and the ability to write notes in the notebook. And not having to pay to remove adds. LOVE my Kobo. Thanks for a great video.

The magsafe issue is because the sleep covers use the magnets to make the device wake/sleep. Your magsafe is tripping the magnet and making the software think it should behave like a sleepcover. I think the recent firmware update allows you to use the page turn buttons for wake sleep now too. Also, apparently the Oxford English Dictionary 2024 edition that Kobo is using for the most recent software update removed etymology. I also like etymology in the definitions 😢

Thank you Lucy from Aussie grandma! I have bought a Kobo Colour Libra , precisely because of the easy access to the public library catalogue, I now have a fairly restricted income so if I can get it free all the better then I can still buy the occasional book if I can’t get it through the library.
I’m also road testing for a friend who devours books and is unable to access the library enough to keep her supplied! She likes a hard copy but more than that she hates not having anything to read and will use an e reader if no other choice 😊She is quite unwell at the moment so she can take a whole library to hospital and browse the internet! Win /win !!!

I had been reading on my iPad for a decade before switching to the kobo libra (without colour) a few years ago. GAME CHANGER!
I picked kobo because I could somewhat easily switch the epubs I purchased in the iBook store to kobo.
I looked up how waterproof kobo vs kindle were, because I like to read on vacation (pool or beach), and kobo came out much better.
I also wanted buttons, I like turning pages like this better.
Like you said, the statistics of each read is great!
I like that there’s a browser on the device to look stuff up when I don’t have my phone near me.
I use a magnetic cover to do the sleep/wake thing, but I don’t have a ring, I added a band of 5cm elastic under one side of the cover to wrap my hand in when I read, or to hold the cover in place!

  • @LARVideos

I originally did it because a while back, you could insert SDcards. I needed that for Manga. Manga takes up a lot of storage.
I recently bought a new one, and it didn't have an SDCard slot. HOWEVER, it has an internal one. So I just swapped the internal one with a 256GB SDcard and now I can have ALL the manga I want on there. Kindles can't do that.

  • @-rianna

the MagSafe issue is easy to fix! Just go to settings > energy saving and privacy > turn off 'automatically sleep and wake up' and that's it! The magnet there turns your device on and off if you have a magnetic flap case or any magnet near it. Once you turn if off, it won't happen :)

US here and the only way i can get Libby on my kindle is, using it on a separate device (phone or iPad) then select read with kindle then go to a second landing page and clicking a link in amazon and then it links to your kindle. So it’s not terrible but prior to buying the kindle i assumed i could download the app to the kindle and use it as i would on my phone. So that really seems gamechanging!

    • @LaLaLauraJ10
      @LaLaLauraJ10 2 місяці тому +6

It really is a gamechanger. Super easy to set up a library card. And, when browsing through books, it gives you the option to purchase, or check (and check-out) via libby/overdrive. I don't see the-zon ever making it as easy to borrow vs buy from them.

That's something that Amazon required. Remember, Amazon owns Audible, so they would rather people pay for an Audible subscription than learn about Libby. So they don't want to make it easy to use Libby. And at one time, Kobo and Libby were owned by the same company, so the integration there makes sense.

Loved this video! I'm already a kobo user and always have been, but I had actually been considering the opposite switch. This was really helpful in reaffirming my decision to stay with Kobo, but as a Clara HD user, I'm definitely going to keep my eye on the Libre's if I ever need to upgrade. Never thought I'd want the buttons, but I also had never considered how much easier it would be to read with the buttons in the bath! I think what I'm noticing after hearing a decent bit of discussion about both brands is that Kindle has leaned strongly in to providing cool experiences around the reading experience through accessories, like cases, stands, page turners etc. But Kobo has prioritized the actual reading experience, which is the most important for me. Thanks for sharing!

Kindle user here. I’ve always loved my Kindles: I had two basic models for a couple of years, then switched to the Paperwhite. However, I’ve noticed that Amazon seems to be trying to make us Kindle users dissatisfied. They’ve made it harder to use with the new updates: you can’t even transfer books to your Kindle via the app anymore, and they’ve removed several file formats, making it difficult to buy eBooks from other platforms. On top of that, the new Kindle costs a ridiculous amount of money and doesn’t even offer any significant new features! Like, okay, it has colors, but what else?
I’m planning to switch to the Kobo Libra Color this Christmas. I mean, it’s an e-reader with a stylus that lets you annotate directly on the page AND has a notebook section where you can create your own reading journal, bullet journal, or planner-and it’s almost half the price! SAY LESS!!!

The pop socket issue is because they are designed for cases with a magnetic cover so when you slide the case it goes to sleep when you open it the kobo wakes up because your pop socket is magnetic it’s reacting in the same way but it shouldn’t do any damage. I’ve just purchased the bigme colour reader that I can have books on from both kobo and Amazon and anyone else’s books for that matter . It’s great but I bit more elaborate to use till you set it up how you want and a shorter battery time but it comes with a pen and case for a few pounds more than the reader itself. Ps love you don’t get too technical with the review just what’s good and bad ❤

My Kindle died in a matter of days when I left it asleep, compared to a month when I wasn’t using it. And when they removed subscriptions for paper and magazines, it was just another major annoyance. I was considering getting a Scribe, but the cost and limitations for note-taking turned me off. Libby was also a huge factor - how this is restricted in Australia really disappointed me.
While I was thinking about getting a Kobo, I think for my needs and the cost difference, the new iPad mini does what I need it to in a similar size. I still have the Kindle for times when I want to take it to the gardens to read.
I wish I got the Kobo in the first instance - it dissapointed me when the update for Kindle started prioritising books I didn't own over those I were in the middle of reading.

This just came across my feed, and I'm not in the market for a Kobo (I'm an iPad Mini reader, for reading books in different languages and getting better translations) but I noticed you're waiting to check out Beartown and The Martian and they're some of my favorite books, so just on that you earned a subscriber. Congrats on the new Kobo!

very late but!! if you happen to have any washi tape, you can tear a piece off and roll it into a loop, then stick it on the back of the stickers! that way, you don't have to unpeel the stickers themselves and you can change up the designs anytime you want. the washi tape generally doesn't leave any adhesive behind since its a tape designed to not permanently stick things down. :D

I'm a super new Kobo convert, too! Got my Clara Colour just the other day and I love it because it was the same size as my Kindle Basic with all the features I use, but possesses key features that the Basic didn't: namely, the warm lighting and the waterproof feature. Love my KCC to bits and I feel like I'm reading more now because the color makes me look forward to picking up the device to finish a book~

I keep seeing videos like this and I'm so close to switching! I love my Kindle Oasis so much; I love the physical buttons! I get why Amazon would want to get rid of them; physical buttons are moving parts, and moving parts break, and breaking devices lead to warranty repairs and poor reviews... but buttons are so good! I can read in the bathtub with wet hands and not get any water on the screen! Ooh, it has a feature where you can turn off the touchscreen (until the next time you press the power button) and then it only responds to the buttons! I really wish they'd bring it back.
But my Oasis' battery is getting worse; when I first got it (six years ago!) it lasted about four weeks with my regular usage, and now it struggles past just a few days. Makes sense since it gets such heavy usage and it's so old! I think it's had the longest actual usage-lifespan of any device I've ever owned! But I don't want to get a Kindle without buttons, and with all the other little niceties of the Kobo... I think you've convinced me! This is a great review!

This reminds me, another thing that convinces me to get a Kobo is that they are repairable. Kindles are nice but there isn't anything a regular user can do if something went wrong other than simply buy another Kindle. The Kobo has information out there on how to extend the life of your device.

The ‘definition’ option on the kobo is a must-have for me now that I’ve started with a kobo. I’m also already in the habit of searching for my libby books on my app before opening them in kobo. I have been tempted to try a kindle just to have instant access to a book without waiting for the libby book and the kobo subscription doesn’t seem to include any of the books I’m wanting to read. However, after watching your video, I don’t think I’d be able to tolerate the slower platform, lack of definition tab and bottom power button. I do wish there were better case options for the kobo though. Thanks for your help!

I just got the Libra Colour a week ago. I've wanted something to write notes on for a while, and for me it was really between the Colorsoft and the Kobo Libra Colour.
What sold me on the Libra Colour was value per dollar. The Colorsoft is *just* for reading. You can't write with it at all. You can argue that the Libra Colour isn't *great* for writing, and I'd probably agree with you (the slipperiness of the screen really hampers long writing sessions) but at least you *can* take notes with it.
The two things I love the most about the Libra Colour are the Google Drive integration and the Overdrive integration. (I assume there are different licensing deals. It sounds like you have Libby on the Kobo Libra Colour instead of Overdrive over there.)
The other thing I love is that not only is Overdrive integrated into the Kobo, but Kobo actually lets you know when you can get a book on Overdrive vs. buying it. You don't have to go check your library's page yourself.
The only real downside for me is the battery life. With the Paperwhite, I never had to think about the battery (especially since I could just put it on the wireless charging stand). I don't think, the way I use it right now, the Kobo would last much more than a week without charging. The one thing my Kindle has that the Kobo doesn't is the ability to dim the light in response to ambient light. It's weird to me that hey have an ambient light sensor but only use it to adjust the color temperature rather than the brightness itself.

    • @lucycanread
      @lucycanread  2 місяці тому +1

Absolutely agree on value for dollar. Yes, the Kindle trumps Kobo in some areas, but ultimately I'm chuffed with it. And no, you're right - it is Overdrive here! Plus the Google Drive & Dropbox obviously.
I tend to agree with the battery - it's objectively not as good as the Kindle, but for good reason, and I'm very rarely without power so I don't mind :)
If you're interested - I use a matte screen protector which not only helps with using a stylus for that more paper feel (and no slip), it also doesn't retain fingerprints and smudges. Mayve have a look for one and give it a try! Thank you for watching Brian :D

The MagSafe issue is probable because of the auto sleep/wake-up for the sleep cover, which kobo sells. Basically, the sleepcover works through interacting with the magnets installed in the device's front panel but I can see how the MagSafe ring can trigger it. You can turn this off in the settings (auto sleep settings), or by placing your magnetic ring on the other side of the kobo, since the magnets it uses are on the side with the buttons.

Great video, Lucy! I suspect that your magnet issue is caused by a feature that the Kobo has to automatically turn on and off based on a magnetized cover. Your magnetic pop-socket is probably fooling your Kobo into thinking that you're closing and opening the cover. And no, there's nothing inside the Kobo that can be damaged by a maget (of the strength you're likely to have access to), including the e-Ink display.

I love that it isn't damaging my eyes the way the iPad screen would over time, but I do find that it's pretty slow. I do love that if I have EPUB files I can use the Amazon site to send it to the Kindle, because I do sometimes use another site that's probably not great for legality reasons so I don't need to be purchasing straight from Amazon and linking my books only to Amazon.
