THANK YOU for talking about kindle’s cloud syncing feature. When I’ve seen other comparison videos, they keep talking about how much easier it is to do on kobo. In my opinion it’s SO much easier on kindle when you can just send to kindle or via email, AND it’s synced across multiple devices. I’m a kindle user but I envy kobo’s reading stats
it's really THE thing that sets them apart in a practical way! it's kind of surprising to me that there are no reading stats at all because they clearly do calculate your time read in order to show your reading progress so it seems silly to me that they don't just show some basic stuff 😭
a note about sideloading on kindle: i don't know about android, but on iphone you can sideload files from the file app by clicking share, clicking on the kindle app and sending it to kindle. i've never had to use the kindle email this way.
thank you for encouraging anti-consumer culture to fix and refurbish first 🙌🏼 I constantly feel the pressure to buy brand new in the book community so this is refreshing!
I keep seeing comments about the reading progress on kobo like kindles don’t have it? Can you explain more about the kobos reading progress and why it’s better than kindle? 2:59
I bought a kobo libra 2 last year and honestly it's been pretty great. I only use Libby/overdrive and it's been good for me. I really want to avoid amazon as much as possible so kobo and storygraph as my reading tracker app have been so incredible. Also edit to add: i did just purchase a refurbished kobo because i wanted a little bit smaller ereader specifically for me traveling (havent received it yet) but i dont think anyone really needs more than 1 ereader so i do appreciate you mentioning how aesthetic-icizing ereaders can lead to overconsumption because damn do i feel pressure to get all these fancy accessories and more ereaders just because others make it so appealing
refurbished is always such a great option, especially since you often can get good warranty on them as well so you can have that peace of mind! and I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that pressure 🥲
The location number is used due to the discrepancy between a book page and a Kindle screen. It is a more precise indicator of where you are in a book and helps to sync your devices across the many methods you can use to read Kindle books/listen to some audiobooks.
I’m also in Canada and I got a kobo for overdrive/Libby connection. Between that and kobo’s price matching policy I’m happy. Whenever I have a KU subscription I just read on the kindle app.
Thanks for talking about the sideloading and sync differences between the two. The whispersync feature in kindle is crucial for me. I was planning on getting the new libra colour and this is so good to know, since i sideload all the books i read using send to kindle and read on my paperwhite and the phone app.
Ah I love the Kobo reading stats and overall UI but the cloud syncing of Kindle can’t be beat! It’s so convenient to just continue on in my current book on the Kindle app on my phone while waiting in line or something. I have considered switching over to Kobo though so I’m glad to at least know that ahead of time.
Just wanted to say, thank you for taking the time to make this video. I currently have an old Kindle (7th gen), but I want to upgrade, and I think Kobo is the option that suits me, appreciate all the info shared :)
i think the thing for me (and it's definitely a me thing, it's not a problem with the kindle at all ofc) when it comes to the syncing situation is that i don't see the point in reading from my phone/app/etc if i have my kobo (and it's so tiny that i literally have it on me everywhere i go anyway, bag or no bag). i've never much liked reading on my phone in the first place (before i got my kobo i only ever used libby for audiobooks and i only read physical books from the library) for so many reasons (eye strain, tiny text, drains my phone battery, blue light, etc), so my kobo is perfect for me and i only every use those files on there anyway. i would probably have a different opinion if i did use netgalley etc, but sideloading books and being able to download fanfics directly from ao3 on my kobo (like no phone, just straight kobo) is more than enough for me :D also this video is so so so fantastic !! i watched your video on ereaders from 3 years ago before i decided to bite the bullet and get my clara two years ago (well my bf got it for me for my birthday lol) and it's what ultimately led me to getting a kobo instead of a kindle (and i also just don't like amazon lol) so thank you !!!!
I have a Kindle Paperwhite Signiture and recently got a Scribe, too. These are my first two e-readers and they have many options I really like, but now I'm considering getting Kobo Libra color. I hear from different sources that Kobo has a lot of good features and that is more customizable and you can repare and replace different parts of the device. I just really wish it had speakersnstead of buttons. Afterwards at some future point I will probably get a Onyx Boox Note Air 3 C or something like it. I like it that you pointed out some of the less commented features. That was very helpful ❤
a note about sideloading on kindle: i don't know about android, but on iphone you can sideload files from the file app by clicking share, clicking on the kindle app and sending it to kindle. i've never had to use the kindle email this way.
I'm pretty sure that feature actually uses the kindle email under the hood, but yes, that's one way to do it! send to kindle has a bunch of different integrations
Thank you for this 🙂 I am new to ereading and kobo. I didn’t know about navigating through the pages that way. It’s really nice. I like to be able to flip through my pages.
Hi! This was super helpful, so thank you! I got given a Kindle Paperwhite many years ago - it's a 6th generation one, and it keeps randomly turning on and off. I am desperate to get away from Amazon but wasn't sure about the Kobo, so this was super informative. I am glad it wasn't about comparing specs but more about one user's comparison on the usability of both devices... you helped me make up my mind!
Hey thereee! 💕 As someone who has only ever had a kindle, this is really interesting to me 👀 if I’m ever on the market for a new reader I feel much more informed now 🥰✨
With the calibre software ecosystem doesn’t matter. I just bought the kobo libra color for the stylus and ability to annotate books with multiple colors and being able to write notes directly on the books. Sleep wake covers are a must for me and I’ve never had an issue. I’ve side loaded fonts with no issues. Open Sans is very readable for me. I’m not a fan of serifs.
I have owned a few Kobos over the years, I had the original Kobo from 2011 and I loved it. I used it for years till the D pad stopped working. I then got the Glo HD and had nothing but problems. Had to send it back to get it repaired when it was 8-9 months old. Took weeks to get back then it stopped working again, but since it was over a year old at that point they wouldn't fix it. I decided to try Kindle at that point. I like Kindle, I still have my 2017 one and use it sometimes though it is not my favorite. I do find side-loading books easier on Kindle. I don't use it very often. The few times that I tried it with Kobo years ago it was a pain in the butt. Honestly, I like Kobo's UI better. Recently my library has greatly improved their e book catalog and as a Canadian, that means Kobo is the better option since Kindle Overdrive is US-only. I bought another Kobo about a year and a half ago (Clara 2e) and love it, haven't had an issue with this one. I use it mostly for library books and it works great.
@@Dustyrosepetal totally agree with everything you've said! i loved the Kobo with the dpad, it was my first device, though relatively short lived for me since I accidentally left it out in the rain 😅
This was so helpful! Thank you so much :) I really want to buy an e-reader, since I'll be going abroad for 5 months and don't want to take all my books with me hahah. Now I have to do some reflection on what I actually want, but so far I find the Kobo a bit more appealing.
Kindle has the better built-in dictionaries by far! It's also easier to add and then toggle between keyboard languages if you're reading in languages other than English. I'm still looking into how this works on KLC once Nickel Menu, KOReader, and Plato are set up properly. I have reading streaks on my PW 11 Kids Editions, but I'm not keeping tabs.
I got a kobo Libra color about 2 months ago and I absolutely love it. Unfortunately, a large amount of the books I want to read are available on kindle unlimited, so I ended up getting a kindle basic as well to save money since I was buying paperbacks and it adds up quickly (but it was on sale at Best Buy for $15 off and I had an extra $10) so I couldn’t really beat that deal. Before I didn’t understand why people would have multiple e-readers, but it makes sense depending on what you need in the moment
I ended up in a similar boat! I love my kobo libra color for a million reasons but what killed me was constantly searching for a book I wanted and they didn't have it period.
Honestly I love kobo so much. I bought a Sage a while ago and I've absolutely gotten my money's worth of it - honestly besides the kindle ecosystem there's 0 reason to grab a kindle over kobo. Not to mention, screw amazon, can I get an amen?
@@tammietriestoread It's a couple inches shorter and wider than an A5 book. I have a 2018 kindle I bought off of FB marketplace and yes there’s some newer features it doesn’t have that I wish it did (mainly being backlit to allow reading in the dark lol) but nonetheless I’m happy with it and don’t feel the need to buy a new one as long as it continues to work for me. When I do get a new one yes I can see myself buying it BRAND NEW this time, however it will be a purchase that makes sense because this second hand one was already my trial to discover “will I like this? Will I even want to use a e-reader?”
My first e-reader (way back when ereaders were first coming out) was a Kobo, then I went through 2 kindles. I've recently switched back to Kobo in order to avoid buying books from Amazon. I think I'll still hang onto my kindle and may use it for travel and such.
overall, i really love my kobo but my only nitpick with is that it doesn't have a synch feature so i agree with you with that 😭 as someone who sideloads all of my books, it such a shame that i cannot read it across all my devices and potentially lose all my highlights and notes when i upgrade to a new kobo.
i’m 99% sure i’ve downloaded my annotations from my kobo onto my computer before (iirc it’s like a hidden file or something), which could maybe be an option for when you upgrade to a new kobo! definitely not sustainable or practical for day-to-day use and syncing purposes though
Also don’t get those automatic page turner for kindle. I bought my kindle not even a year ago and two months ago I got those page turner and my screen now starts randomly to freeze and not respond to touch and sometimes I can’t even restart. Problems started after I got that p turner. So please consider it
I'm a Kobo user because I try to avoid Amazon where possible, and because it has colour, and because it has buttons, because it has Overdrive in my country. BUT I also have a Kindle because not all titles are available on Kobo ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ it is what it is
My Kindle is maybe a Kindle 3 or 2? It has a keyboard on the bottom with page turners on the both sides. I replaced the battery, and have had it for at least 15 years. Though now I am looking for a device with a light. I am only thinking this because I left my kindle at my mom’s place back in the US. 📱
ahhh I miss physical buttons so much! the light does make such a difference though imo, I forgot to mention it but that's one of the reasons why I don't use my Kobo mini as much anymore either!
@@tammietriestoread which one has a more warm tone? I am on the fence with Kobo and Kindle. Is Kobo tied to a specific online bookseller, like nook and kindle?
22:57 it’s not quite two different kinds of kindles. it’s basically pay $20 usd extra for no ads (or contact customer support to see if they’ll remove them for foe free)
Great informative video for me who’s only familiar with Kindle. For Kobo, can you download apps (specifically the Kindle app)? Hoping it’ll be an easy way to share/sync my library.
unfortunately not, Kobo has its own ecosystem! for something that you can download apps to, you'd need something like an onyx boox that's basically an android tablet with an e-ink screen
For the ads on Kindle, if you really don't want them, you can pay $20 bucks to get them removed so your kindle can show the book covers instead. But other than that, you get ads otherwise. I'm planning to make the switch from Kindle to Kobo because I feel like I'm potentially wasting money on books I will probably never get to due to the reading recommendations and "we think you might like this..." Like, I just want to read my books without being bombarded with the noise to buy other books!
I honestly am looking into a kobo because of the whole issue where Amazon pulled books and even if you have purchased it, it will disappear from your library. So I’m wanting a device where I can download my purchased ebooks and not worry about them being disappearing lol
that's definitely a larger conversation regarding digital ownership in general - the Kobo store runs into many of the same issues, though there are ways to work around this with methods that aren't fully legal per se 😅
I've been using the Kindle app on my phone because it integrates right with my Amazon account and that makes things super easy, but with the way they're starting to act like you purchasing a digital book is you renting the book I'm so looking for other options.
this is true of any ebook purchased through the Kobo store as well, and there's definitely a larger conversation here regarding digital ownership in general
love the video! im just wondering if in kindle's annotation system, do they have a filter feature like in kobo where you can choose if you only want to see your highlights or notes?
hmm, i’m not 100% sure since i don’t utilize notes that much so maybe it’s just a setting that i haven’t found yet, but it looks like it’s all just grouped together (bookmarks are separate though)
Do you own your books outright on Kobo? Or is it like the Kindle where it's basically a license to read the book, but you aren't allowed to keep it or download a copy to store locally?
Hi! Does Kobo have the Voiceview Screen Reader function like on kindle? that's the only reason why I am not switching to Kobo. I have a freelance that involve finishing some books in a certain time, but I do have a 9-5 job 😅 So with that function with Kindle, I could just connect my bluetooth headphones and the screen reader while working. But at the same time, Kobo's annotating function would really be convenient for that said freelance. So I am really torn. Thank you in advance!
@@KendleHardbound I'm not sure since I have an older device from before they even had audio functionality at all, so you'll have to look into whether the newer Kobo's have this! that being said, kindle and Kobo have pretty comparable annotation functionality imo (ie. both can do highlighting and notes)
Also, libby on kindle is kind of annoying. You have to use your phone or the website and then you have to connect to your amazon account to send it to the kindle. No matter how many times I've connected it, I still have to every time.
Thank you so much for all these details, but the best I surprised that your mini flash with glo, i have kobo mini, do you mind tell me how you flashed the glo firmware on mini or just gove me a link for how to do that. Thank you again.
if you google "Kobo mini Glo firmware Reddit" there should be a few threads that talk about it! the process was basically to download the firmware, move it into the right folder, and restart
i had heard they were removing the option to download from your kindle to your computer, not the send to kindle feature, but that's very disappointing if that's true.
@@FantasyBookAddict hahah for me personally the colour doesn't outweigh the downgrade in screen quality but this is what I mean by you have to consider what's important to you!

But ecosystem is today not necessary. You cqn install kinfle books on other devices and kobo ebooks on kindle. Only remove very easy that school kids drm and read on the device you like
I think the biggest advantage with Kobo is that the page count actually updates when you change font size. The biggest advantage for Kindle is the sync for side-loaded content.

My first e-reader (way back when ereaders were first coming out) was a Kobo, then I went through 2 kindles. I've recently switched back to Kobo in order to avoid buying books from Amazon. I think I'll still hang onto my kindle and may use it for travel and such.
I love this so much I also have The Kobo Libra H20 that is my baby!! And I own the kindle Paperwhite 10th Gen
yesss it's truly my favourite eReader I've ever owned 🤧
overall, i really love my kobo but my only nitpick with is that it doesn't have a synch feature so i agree with you with that 😭 as someone who sideloads all of my books, it such a shame that i cannot read it across all my devices and potentially lose all my highlights and notes when i upgrade to a new kobo.
i’m 99% sure i’ve downloaded my annotations from my kobo onto my computer before (iirc it’s like a hidden file or something), which could maybe be an option for when you upgrade to a new kobo! definitely not sustainable or practical for day-to-day use and syncing purposes though
@tammietriestoread oh i havent heard of this before! does this let you sideload those annotations to your new kobo? like it will reflect in the books
"This isn't going to be the most technical review" as it proceeds to be the best and most useful technical review😂
haha i'm glad you enjoyed it! 🥰
I love my Kobo!!
it's such a great device!
This was very helpful thank you!
Very informative- thank you!!
This is SOOOOOO helpful!! Thank you!
ahh I'm so glad you found it helpful! 🥰
Also don’t get those automatic page turner for kindle. I bought my kindle not even a year ago and two months ago I got those page turner and my screen now starts randomly to freeze and not respond to touch and sometimes I can’t even restart. Problems started after I got that p turner. So please consider it
oh wow i haven't heard about that before, good to know!
I'm a Kobo user because I try to avoid Amazon where possible, and because it has colour, and because it has buttons, because it has Overdrive in my country. BUT I also have a Kindle because not all titles are available on Kobo ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ it is what it is
I love my kobo libra 2! I use it to read manga as well
My Kindle is maybe a Kindle 3 or 2?
@@Stormbrise ahh I'm not sure about the warmth since my kindle doesn't have temperature settings, sorry! Kobo has its own store for ebooks
Google Drive also supported.
22:57 it’s not quite two different kinds of kindles. it’s basically pay $20 usd extra for no ads (or contact customer support to see if they’ll remove them for foe free)
ahh that makes sense, thank you!
I think it depends on the book if it's sold with DRM protection or not, but I'm not 100% sure
It doesn't make sense that on the kindle app they have the page number you're on out of the full amount of pages but not on the actual kindle.
Also, libby on kindle is kind of annoying. You have to use your phone or the website and then you have to connect to your amazon account to send it to the kindle. No matter how many times I've connected it, I still have to every time.
This video mainly made me curious about Kobo modding 😂
(i have a kobo libra 2)
it's SO fascinating! i'm always lurking on reddit and people are talking about their mods and i'm like wow that's so bold i could never??
@@tammietriestoread hahaha i added a clock, but i’m to scared to do anything else 😂
@@silke_b_like no I love that cos that's also the first mod I would want to do
Thank you so much for all these details, but the best I surprised that your mini flash with glo, i have kobo mini, do you mind tell me how you flashed the glo firmware on mini or just gove me a link for how to do that. Thank you again.
if you google "Kobo mini Glo firmware Reddit" there should be a few threads that talk about it! the process was basically to download the firmware, move it into the right folder, and restart
When I tap on the top of my kobo screen the time is in the upper left corner… 😮
yep, mine does this too! it just doesn't permanently display the time while I'm actively reading the way that my kindle does
@@tammietriestoread oh… ok… well not a big deal for me… but I understand what your saying…
You have a very sweet cat! 🐈
thank you, she really is!! 🤧
😍
So random, but 10 minutes into the video i realized i could fall asleep to your voice😅, you can drone on and on about nothingness and it'd be cool😊
hahahah thank you, I think? 😂
Another huge thing to note that I just found out is that Amazon is getting rid of the “send to kindle” feature with the newer kindles :(
i had heard they were removing the option to download from your kindle to your computer, not the send to kindle feature, but that's very disappointing if that's true.
first!! 💜💜
i’m so tempted to get the kobo libra color just for the highlights and buttons. do i need it? no. but do
i want it? yes 😍
Amazon used to take off kindle adds for free but they don’t do that anymore, i tried 😔
@@FantasyBookAddict hahah for me personally the colour doesn't outweigh the downgrade in screen quality but this is what I mean by you have to consider what's important to you!
oh booo that's so annoying! I heard it depends on the customer service rep you get but that's just what I've seen on Reddit
@@tammietriestoreadyeah the customer service rep told me they’re no longer allowed to offer to take down the ads for free 😩 this was a great video bb 📱
But ecosystem is today not necessary. You cqn install kinfle books on other devices and kobo ebooks on kindle. Only remove very easy that school kids drm and read on the device you like
Ack! That’s sad your Boox Palma was stolen 😢
in the grand scheme of what was stolen, it really was not the worst thing 🥲 but definitely sad and i do miss it sometimes!
I am a kobo and Storytel e-reader person (Storytel comes with a subscription)
Is there a storytel device?
@@carlitosoe in the Netherlands there is. I really like it. You can read and listen to all the books they have on storytel :)
I think the biggest advantage with Kobo is that the page count actually updates when you change font size. The biggest advantage for Kindle is the sync for side-loaded content.
Hi beautiful awesome work💛❤❤💛💝💛💝💛❤💛💛💗❤💜💖💜💜❤💜❤💜💞❤💜❤💜❤💞

HI 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻
hiiii friend!! 🥰🥰
You picked the wrong month to make this video lol Time for an update
i actually made this video two months ago! as I mentioned in it, I'm a proponent of buying used/using your existing devices so I won't be updating anytime soon 🙂
Hey Tammie , really nice video ! I was wondering if I could help you with more Quality Editing in your videos and also make a highly engaging Thumbnail and also help you with the overall youtube strategy and growth ! Pls let me know what do you think ?
no thank you 🙂
your channel picture isn't all that good, with all due respect!
Oh! So close! It’s actually a perfect profile picture! no one needed or asked for your opinion on what you think is or is not a good profile picture!
I know I’m nitpicking but the excessive use of “uhm” is distracting. I’m so sorry and I don’t want to be rude but I wanted to let you know
🤦🏼♀️
Kindle. Some of your adjective choices bother me. English is a very plentiful language. However, thank you for this review.
Me, a students on a budget, only having a kindle because I won it as a gift from my new bank from their recommendation program watching this: 🤔
I really liked the long-winded way of showing us your devices. I love me a side quest and a background story while getting new info❤🩹
omg I love this for you!! I hope you're getting so much use out of your Kindle 🤧💕
