    I have been watching a lot of your videos, and learning from them. I am priming my house now with Kilz 2. Some areas look great, but a couple of places I had to backroll because of overspray. I used your recommendation of spraying in sections, and I am getting better. Keep teaching, and posting great content! God bless you.

    I just painted my house (after watching many of your videos). My house has Hardy Plank siding. Absolutely correct, the siding will show heavy or light spots and starts and stops. I had to do some stuff over. Also, one side of my house is two story and, with not much room for proper ladder angle, had to rent scaffolding. I see on this side, with many starts and stops unavoidable, some not so perfect painting. Still saved a bunch doing it myself!

    Great explanation Chris. I don't know what it's like in Idaho, but in Washington I've been seeing less of the Hardie Plank with a printed texture, and more perfectly smooth Hardie Plank over the last 5 years. It's exponentially worse to deal with, as it's perfectly flat...it's like shooting fine finish cabinetry, and if you get a spit, a hose drag, or have to stop mid board you're screwed. I find there's a little bit more forgiveness with the textured Hardie Plank.

    Great video as always! Quick question... is the prep for covering nails/screws different for Hardy Board? I heard using caulk isn't ideal, that an acrylic mortar should be used, but not sure if that's accurate or really matters.
    Anyone? Thanks!

    What about parts of the house that are high off the ground ? Is the only option to roll it on ? Or just back roll it as mentioned in one of the comments ? If your having to back roll a large section. Would it not be easier to just roll the whole section ?Thanks for putting the videos out. Their is some good info in them.

      @@Idahopainter Hello. I wish I would have watched your video sooner and just painted my house myself. We hired some painters to spray our smooth hardy board on our brand new home and there are overlaps and splatters and sputters everywhere. They sprayed it in the direct sunlight in 105° heat when we were not there and the entire house looks like a disaster. Any tips for how to correct it? We painted it a very dark charcoal color. Would we have to roll and brush it now? You mentioned in the video that once you get the overlaps there is really no way to remove them. Are you saying a second spray coat would not correct this if done properly?

    • @wildonezhnrqz5087
      @wildonezhnrqz5087 4 роки тому

      Using red or gray duct tape. Sometimes there is specific stucco or brick duct tape that works good. First put up a big thick plastic to cover most of it then mask up the edges after. You put the duct tape to make your lines around the brick and then use masker to make for easy clean up after spraying. I'll put up some videos of what I mean. Check out my channel

    Hey Chris
    I enjoy you videos. Just out of curiosity in regards to the caulking. I've been installing Hardie for many years and I've never caulked my butt joints. I install an aluminium flashing behind and leave 1/16 - 1/8" gap. With expansion and contracting I've seen caulking fail and it looks horrible but I did notice some of these joints weren't done very well. Maybe they were inconsistent gaps? James Hardie does not recommend caulking joints in the field only when it's up against their HARDIE trims, or wood trims etc. Cheers

    If you don't have a sprayer, can you use a roller and brush. Or will you get lap marks using a roller and brush. I have a 1700 sq ft house one story ranch. What Exterior paint would be best for Hardi board siding. I'm leaning towards Shermin Williams or Benjamine Moore. Brands. Those Big Box store brands look kind of low grade on their ingredants. I've had good luck with SW and BM. I use to paint buildings as a kid for my dad . He was a house builder.

    If I am repainting Hardie Plank do I need to use a primer to get a uniform appearance with the topcoat? Or can I use something like SW Emerald Exterior Acrylic Latex in a single coat of similar color? Also, do you recommend any particular sheen for Hardie plank? I have 2 houses up the street from me one has several lap marks up the side (3 levels) and was painted in a flat paint. The other has no visible lap marks and was painted in a satin or low gloss paint. Is there a particular paint sheen that would tend to show less lap marks or does the technique have more effect on this problem?

      if you want to avoid lap marks number one never paint in direct sunlight unless early morning. 2 ,always back roll your work. I painted a 4,000 square ft house in the dead of summer in Texas and there's not one lap mark on the siding..the technique is back roll....if your not experienced enough with the spray rig, you can not get a uniform look just by spraying..

    Where I work, spraying could get you fined and removed from the community. There's too many Tesla's and Martin's running the road for overspray. We run 4 inch brushes, always when the wall is shaded. I usually do 1 coat universal acrylic primer, 2 coats Aura. No laps ever.

    • @john316fun
      @john316fun 6 років тому +1

      It is better to prime with Loxon masonry conditioner. The ph of Hardie siding can be really out of whack, and the Loxon assures there will be no issues down the road due to ph. Also, according to James Hardie himself, you never caulk the butt joints. Chris is right about spraying without stopping and starting, but those butt joints are supposed to have flashing behind them, and not caulked. Look at the Hardie website and this is confirmed. I'm a pro painter and have dealt with these issues. Loxon is best! Then two coats of acrylic paint. Never stain or use oil/alkyd paints on Hardie Siding (again, from the Hardie site itself).

And I just about could lift my spoon to eat my soup!!!! I know a lot of people would think of painting as physical labor... But you're deffinitly liftin', stretching , climbing , and you gotta be moving ...expescially when you're spraying stuff... You gotta go till you're done! Why aren't you guys just ordering colorplus so all this isn't necessary? Unless you are just going wtih off the wall colors....the colorplus is far superior to anything you can shoot out of gun.

    You are not supposed to caulk the seams. The boards will expand and contract as temperatures change and this will cause the boards to bow out if the gaps are filled with caulking.

    Stop using cheap paint and you won't have that problem. I've only been painting for 40 years.

      Most of the people that watch these videos are like me. A homeowner that wants to learn how to paint my own house. I like his explanations very well. Just showing a video of painting doesn’t do much to help us. I’m sure there are plenty of videos where folks just paint. Go watch those.
