I'm a painter out in Phoenix every time I need some help I look up one of your videos, real helpful. Keep up the good work!!!👍
I just love the spray painting application! One of the best methods in creating a really nice uniform finishing coat ! 👍
I have been watching a lot of your videos, and learning from them. I am priming my house now with Kilz 2. Some areas look great, but a couple of places I had to backroll because of overspray. I used your recommendation of spraying in sections, and I am getting better. Keep teaching, and posting great content! God bless you.
I just painted my house (after watching many of your videos). My house has Hardy Plank siding. Absolutely correct, the siding will show heavy or light spots and starts and stops. I had to do some stuff over. Also, one side of my house is two story and, with not much room for proper ladder angle, had to rent scaffolding. I see on this side, with many starts and stops unavoidable, some not so perfect painting. Still saved a bunch doing it myself!
Chris, perfect timing for your video. I'm replacing some sections of my rotted fiberboard siding with cement board. Your videos are terrific and have me looking forward to painting the exterior of my house.
The view from that house looks amazing!!!!!
painting from "end to end"the later videos with the extra money extension really paid off for me,...thanks idaho
love your videos man !!! great work
Thanks for sharing your pro tips !!
gotta paint fiber cement board this week. This video helped with some questions i had. thanks! You're my go to channel when I am not 100% sure!
Done!
I needed to see this, Thank you.
You are welcome!
great work!!! no problems
you showed the low part of the house. how did you do the higher parts without stopping
Great explanation Chris. I don't know what it's like in Idaho, but in Washington I've been seeing less of the Hardie Plank with a printed texture, and more perfectly smooth Hardie Plank over the last 5 years. It's exponentially worse to deal with, as it's perfectly flat...it's like shooting fine finish cabinetry, and if you get a spit, a hose drag, or have to stop mid board you're screwed. I find there's a little bit more forgiveness with the textured Hardie Plank.
You painted the heck outa that wall!
This was very relaxing to watch
Thanks for being with us!
Great video as always! Quick question... is the prep for covering nails/screws different for Hardy Board? I heard using caulk isn't ideal, that an acrylic mortar should be used, but not sure if that's accurate or really matters.
Anyone? Thanks!
Was that Dang Ol Lou Ferrigno incredible painting Hulk...? NAILED IT....!!
3 down... & 3 UP !!
YEAGH BUDDY !!
Do you rely on the primer that comes with the siding or do you prime it yourself? I’m glad I found this video. I’m putting Hardie siding on my house.
What about parts of the house that are high off the ground ? Is the only option to roll it on ? Or just back roll it as mentioned in one of the comments ? If your having to back roll a large section. Would it not be easier to just roll the whole section ?Thanks for putting the videos out. Their is some good info in them.
Thank you for the tips!! I am painting a barn shed with Hardie Board but only 10 x 12 feet so little chance of start/stop issues. However, My walls will be skinned while laying flat and I was going to use a roller and paint them before they're stood vertical.
Thanks for watching Kenny, hope it turns out good for you!
@@Idahopainter Hello. I wish I would have watched your video sooner and just painted my house myself. We hired some painters to spray our smooth hardy board on our brand new home and there are overlaps and splatters and sputters everywhere. They sprayed it in the direct sunlight in 105° heat when we were not there and the entire house looks like a disaster. Any tips for how to correct it? We painted it a very dark charcoal color. Would we have to roll and brush it now? You mentioned in the video that once you get the overlaps there is really no way to remove them. Are you saying a second spray coat would not correct this if done properly?
@@ryanrucker5056 did y'all ever figure it out?
I'm going to spray my 6 panel bedroom doors, using Sherwin Williams Infinity Semi Gloss, what tip should I use ? Is the semi gloss the proper sheen for doors, the trim is semi gloss.
You go from the golf hat to the "Oakley" hat? That's what's up......good video.
What is your final opinion of the Titan RX-Pro gun vs Graco FTx gun. Will you continue to buy the Graco over the Titan or phase out the Graco over time?
Use masonry primer like loxon. and you wont have to worry much about start/stops. or flashing much. im from texas and they use alot of hardie down here.
Would this be similar to painting an interior house that is knotty pine planks from floor to ceiling?
Are you able to get enough ml thickness in one shot on hardy or does it suck it in too much?
Nice video, what kind of sprayer you have.
Nice job. It looks like this is just the first coat, though. Think you probably had to do another.
made to look easy with bushes or other things in the way
Hi Chris -- Great video! How long do you expect and/or you have observed the paint to last on the hardie? We're in a similarly gnarly climate and considering painting the hardie ourselves vs. buying prepainted. All the local guys are saying repaint ever 5 years, just like cedar.
I know this is old but I have hardie here in Oklahoma and it is about 13 years old. Still looks good mostly but i am fixing to paint it a different color. I think the folks that told you every 5 years are full of it. Mine wasn’t painted from the factory either.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought Hardie recommended NOT to caulk the seems in the field of the siding. Allows for expansion etc.
Getting ready to paint my brick ranch style home that has Hardy Plank. Good tips. Any tips on masking the brick?
Using red or gray duct tape. Sometimes there is specific stucco or brick duct tape that works good. First put up a big thick plastic to cover most of it then mask up the edges after. You put the duct tape to make your lines around the brick and then use masker to make for easy clean up after spraying. I'll put up some videos of what I mean. Check out my channel
585 for 3 that's impressive! By far the strongest painter on you tube :)
Dude! Was that 585? Your about what 165lbs. What was that weight for real? I know your a buff dude but that would be like crazy weight!!! I hope an pray you're wrapping those knees good that's what killed me in the long run... Big box squat no knee wraps....I'm dumb dumb dumb!
I was checking out the power roller Extention for my sprayer .... How you like working with them?
I blew both my knees out just from watching that.
Hey Chris
I enjoy you videos. Just out of curiosity in regards to the caulking. I've been installing Hardie for many years and I've never caulked my butt joints. I install an aluminium flashing behind and leave 1/16 - 1/8" gap. With expansion and contracting I've seen caulking fail and it looks horrible but I did notice some of these joints weren't done very well. Maybe they were inconsistent gaps? James Hardie does not recommend caulking joints in the field only when it's up against their HARDIE trims, or wood trims etc. Cheers
was looking for an explanation for this
Yeah, you're not supposed to caulk but joints on hardie board, especially if you have flashing behind the joints like you should
I second them both. No caulking.
Yes you right i am a painter & this type of siding don’t need caulking
Thanks
Are lap marks still an issue if you are repainting hardie siding?
I am looking for the brand of stain to consider when staining new primed Hardie Board siding. I am told it should be semi-transparent and one specifically for fiber cement siding. Can you please recommend a brand of semi-transparent stain for this use? Thank you.
We are making changes and eventually will not be answering any questions on UA-cam, but we are directing people to the private paint life members group where other painters in the community can answer questions. It will be a closed group on Facebook. Feel free to check it out! facebook.com/groups/2305219262837596/
Thanks for videos. They do help. Do you thin your paint when using the 515 tip?
Sorry, what was the question?
Sorry that should have said do you thin your paint when using the 515 tip?
I am not in your area, and I want to hire out re-painting my Hardi-Planked house. It is about 15 years old, faded, and the previous owner tried power washing it and there are marks and trails all over... What are the questions I should be asking when considering hiring paint contractors?
How can I get that wood look that you are painting over?
If you don't have a sprayer, can you use a roller and brush. Or will you get lap marks using a roller and brush. I have a 1700 sq ft house one story ranch. What Exterior paint would be best for Hardi board siding. I'm leaning towards Shermin Williams or Benjamine Moore. Brands. Those Big Box store brands look kind of low grade on their ingredants. I've had good luck with SW and BM. I use to paint buildings as a kid for my dad . He was a house builder.
We use Sherwin Williams and recommend any high quality 100% acrylic paint should work.
Do u have to primer new hardiplank siding before painting? Im renovating a detached garage and im approaching siding install completion....
i comes pre primed
Do you need to prime before painting?
Back rolling with a 4inch mini roller blends and eliminates lap marks.
Yes
thank you that's the solution when you're at the highest. 👍
sure but that would take forever.
What type of paint to use for fiber cement ?
What’s the difference between staining and painting hardiboard?
Is one better than the other?
If I am repainting Hardie Plank do I need to use a primer to get a uniform appearance with the topcoat? Or can I use something like SW Emerald Exterior Acrylic Latex in a single coat of similar color? Also, do you recommend any particular sheen for Hardie plank? I have 2 houses up the street from me one has several lap marks up the side (3 levels) and was painted in a flat paint. The other has no visible lap marks and was painted in a satin or low gloss paint. Is there a particular paint sheen that would tend to show less lap marks or does the technique have more effect on this problem?
The Hardie Plank comes pre-primed and we use satin
i noticed you do a 50% over each spray plus if my hardie board has been exposed for a while should i still do another prime over it to seal it up better ? you just got a new sub bro! Also is 2 coats good for outside ?
James Long
if you want to avoid lap marks number one never paint in direct sunlight unless early morning. 2 ,always back roll your work. I painted a 4,000 square ft house in the dead of summer in Texas and there's not one lap mark on the siding..the technique is back roll....if your not experienced enough with the spray rig, you can not get a uniform look just by spraying..
Chet Langford Primer makes everything better!
Cool. But how do you back roll the high points that you can only reach with a ladder and you have 20 ft of siding that gradually expands to 40 as you go down?
Would using a primer say for instance a PVA primer help prevent lap lines in my paint?
Yes, a little
We have hardiplank and are thinking of painting. Is there a need to sand/scrape old color?
Normally, no
There were thin spots in the painters' passes. Were those addressed uniformly by a second coat?
We go back and touch up where needed
Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't Hardie tell you not to caulk the joints?
What was the color called before you sprayed it yellow? Looked really natural!
Sorry, cannot recall
Where I work, spraying could get you fined and removed from the community. There's too many Tesla's and Martin's running the road for overspray. We run 4 inch brushes, always when the wall is shaded. I usually do 1 coat universal acrylic primer, 2 coats Aura. No laps ever.
Great video - one comment on the siding installer - the joints on Hardie (not sure about other manufacturers) should NOT be caulked
How long time you spend to paint that house ???
do you have a poster of you from the good old days that's autograph for us to win?
donde esta tu tienda
Dayum son, 625, and great form. Respect to you sir
Do you know what the paint code of that brown you painted over was called?
So long ago cannot remember
Almost 405 I'm guessing. Nice work. I'd put you around 185 given your height from videos. Very nice
Squats were weak because I cheated but could rep 350 dead lift.
lol, thanks for watching Peter!
I thought that hardy board is not supposed to be caulked due to expansion and retraction. Maybe im wrong. Thoughts.
It can be caulked with the proper product. I recommend Big Stretch
jesus is lord
All siding should be caulked. It’s so called “contractor “ Painters that say that to save $20 per 500 square feet. $20 dollars!!!!!!!!!!! They are pitiful. I lived in an island to know better . What happened to do things like there for you???? I guess Money means more than ethics. Shame on you predators
Joel Palacios, Actually the Manufactures recommend no caulking, except at windows and doors, instead you flash behind joints upon installation, Life is better if you look for the good in people instead of the bad.
The laps should never be caulked on any siding. Butt joints and trim seams should be caulked
I never caulk butt joints (seams) on hardy plank. After a years seasons of expanding and contrasting with no where to move due to caulked butt joints the hardy will start to crack and deform. Up here in Washington state anyways
Agreed
John Cena do it all😂😂😂 wrestle, act & painting now this is a man of all crafts.
lol
I think them 5 gallon buckets weigh around 60 pounds each,,
they can get heavy actually dealing 5 at one point.
hitting the gym is a great idea
What kinda paint
how do you paint interior cement board
+The Idaho Painter if it was brand new Hardie plank? which paint would you use? would you use a two in one primer or no? thanks Chris
Use loxon primer and than paint. no lap marks.
Thanks for the good suggestion!
Eric Filomeno. takes too long, the point is to go in and be out and get paid. its also a waste of material, its better to do it the way Chris does it and don't stop, and find stopping points. Ive done the same.
It is better to prime with Loxon masonry conditioner. The ph of Hardie siding can be really out of whack, and the Loxon assures there will be no issues down the road due to ph. Also, according to James Hardie himself, you never caulk the butt joints. Chris is right about spraying without stopping and starting, but those butt joints are supposed to have flashing behind them, and not caulked. Look at the Hardie website and this is confirmed. I'm a pro painter and have dealt with these issues. Loxon is best! Then two coats of acrylic paint. Never stain or use oil/alkyd paints on Hardie Siding (again, from the Hardie site itself).
What if I’m repainting a 20 year old mobile home that looks good but needs paint?
Use Aura
big boy!!!
If you don't work the bad parts they can really go to hell on you quick! Where's that accent of yours from Canada? Gotta hit the gym to keep runnin' circles round these young guys! Either we're a generation of badass's or these young guys sure do take a lot of energy home with them at the end of the day!!! I alway left a days work with a dang near empty tank.., I guess that's why my old boss's are all ready to help he out with something or tell me who to go see if I need something fixed or whatever.... It's nice when after twenty years the guys still braggin on ya and buyin ya a mug of suds! You should do a video on workin hard because you have pride! I know from just a brief session sprayin these ceilings all day ...working over head gets those shoulders all fired up and burnin'. I couldn't go to the gym after those days fer sure!!! And I just about could lift my spoon to eat my soup!!!! I know a lot of people would think of painting as physical labor... But you're deffinitly liftin', stretching , climbing , and you gotta be moving ...expescially when you're spraying stuff... You gotta go till you're done! I'm a landscaper so even for a fat fello I'm actually quite fit ...you know. Just like a 6', 305lbs. ballerina I'd say!
Use a 410 fine finish tip
I wish I watched this before I got lap marks! Oh well, I’ll do better going forward
I think you should prime it first. Because I hab that problem and it's because the boards keep absorbing the paint.
They come preprimed
Didn’t show the high part with long runs
You don't back roll at all?
Depends on the situation
I liked the weight lifting video....how about a video when you were in law enforcement....(I'm in law enforcement and have my painting business)
Pretty sure you don't want to caulk the joints in hardieplank
Pretty sure you are wrong
Build like a brick :D
great video , barley hear what your saying , poor audio , thanks for all the tips n tricks
Chris is that you squatting that weight? He'll Yeah!
lol
Caulking the end butts is wrong.
1 hour job done in 5 mins with a sprayer
christ is that you how mch r u liftin
Why aren't you guys just ordering colorplus so all this isn't necessary? Unless you are just going wtih off the wall colors....the colorplus is far superior to anything you can shoot out of gun.
You are not supposed to caulk the seams. The boards will expand and contract as temperatures change and this will cause the boards to bow out if the gaps are filled with caulking.
Stop using cheap paint and you won't have that problem. I've only been painting for 40 years.
okay, I know this has nothing to do with the video, but the guy painting that house was super hot
what a wierd video , heres some painting techniques. guess who.. random gym video
OK
i don't know how long you've been painting but you repeat and talk to much...just paint....
Thanks for the feedback Joel!
Joel, I come here to learn and I appreciate the thorough explanations. Thanks idaho painter!
Most of the people that watch these videos are like me. A homeowner that wants to learn how to paint my own house. I like his explanations very well. Just showing a video of painting doesn’t do much to help us. I’m sure there are plenty of videos where folks just paint. Go watch those.
