When caulking the nail heads.... Use a putty knife and go against the grain of the wood so it will leave the grain In the caulked spot, wipe the edges smooth. Looks better than the messy finger wipe. And while we're on caulking... Why in the heck don't you use a good grade caulk like Vulkem ( Urethane base) or OSI ( oil base ) for the bigger gaps for better results, instead of backer rod and latex/acrylic caulk that doesn't have a good grab or elasticity. The caulk I mentioned above not only has a flex rate up to 1/4 " but when you run a clean bead (not fingering the caulk) it looks phenomenal! Also some of the caulk I mentioned has texture in it so when caulking on the surface you have less flashing because of that texture.

Hey Chris , quick question . I recently got slow with work so I went to help another painter . He was using the sherwin Williams spackle to float all the areas where the wood chipped back after we scrapped . I didn’t say nothing cause it’s not my job and I didn’t want to be “ that guy “ but I felt like it was just for sure going to fail not to mention he was priming the bare spots with latex primer before we applied the spackle and then sealed it with a latex paint close to the color we were going to use . Was I wrong Thinking it was going to fail ? Will it hold up ? It was a lot of spackle almost floating full boards at times . I felt when that wood expands and shrinks that spackle will not do the same and fail .

This is amazing. So thorough. Thank you. Question: We have our painters coming tomorrow just before a 5 day rain set. Can prep work be done the morning of a rain day, if they have a small few hour window before the rains come that day? Or will this cause improper caulk adherence to the surface?

Yea man big pet peeve is when you're still in the process of prepping or even just not done w the job yet and someone comes up and points out something you haven't gotten to yet, like you missed it lol. I spend a day or two at the end just walking around the house over and over looking for anything I missed or can improve, so very little gets by me, and it is a bit irritating when they think you're not seeing something. It's like you mowing the grass and in the middle someone comes and points out the section of yard you've yet to mow, saying "you missed some" lmao.
Very helpful video, thanks! Question: If the exterior of the house is really dirty, do you recommend pressure washing it before caulking and prepping it for painting?
Never used white lightening caulk. Sascho products are more favorite caulk. Big stretch is amazing and seems to go on and on without drying out and cracking. For areas where I need the most waterproof as possible, lexel is the go to. But not as easy to tool out as the big stretch.
I have an older house, built in 1953, with painted cedar shakes. Many of the shakes have gaps that run vertically between two adjacent shakes. This looks bad and probably isn't good in terms of water getting in and behind the siding. Should I caulk these gaps before painting? You talked about the siding needing to expand and contract and dry out.
I watch your videos all the time, thanks for making them. I'm 71 years old and I am about to " try " and paint my single story desert home. I'm on a limit income. The reason I am painting it is because you can't find anyone that wants to work in this town. Well, that is unless you have Big $$ and a BIG job for them to do. I just bought a Graco Mangnum Prox 17 airless spray painter. I'm not in the best of health, but a man's gotta do what a man's gotta go right? I guess my biggest question is: Can you spray paint a house, sections at a time. Like one side and then another even though you may not be able to paint the whole thing at one time. I know you are a pro and a lot younger and you can probably knock out a house in 1 or may 2 days after doing all the prep work. I have a pressure washer and all the tools. I just need to pace myself, can that be done? Thanks for making the videos. :o)
I'm currently an apprentice painter, so I may not be fully qualified to answer this question. however, you can do sections at a time as long as the is a stopping point. the stopping point must be like the end of a wall or something not in the middle cause you will get a shut mark ( a visible starting and stopping point) in the paint. hope this helps

Thanks again for the reply. :o)
Hi Chris, thank you so much for everything you do. You are my go to painters when ever I take on a painting project inside and out. We'll it's that time again when I have to paint the outside of the house. We live in California in a manufactured house with siding where the panels meet side by side. So the house likes to shift with weather conditions and the caulk where the siding meets separates. I'm sure I used the wrong kind of caulk. Can you recommend a good caulk that is for this type that's stretches? Thanks again for your time!
Chris, After scraping I have found some areas that feel wet and are a little soft. It is cedar siding. I was thinking of using a wood hardner, what do you recommend.
This guy is a true pro. He obviously takes pride on his craft. As a builder, I wish more painters followed ALL of his painting steps but unfortunately, they don’t.
I am painting my hardie fiber cement siding this weekend. I am using sherwin Williams everlast paint from Lowe’s. My house is currently painted yellow. I am using “anchors away” which is a dark blue. Hopefully I can use the one coat with the 50% pass. It’s guaranteed one coat coverage and contains primer also. It was $220 for 5 gallons. Hopefully it will work great. I am spraying with a graco X5 magnum.
im painting my hardie siding. My caulk is attached firmly on the siding but certain places in the caulk are cracked. Can i just caulk over or do you think i should replace it with new?
Ditto, ditto, ditto on new guys caulking around the entryway. The only thing worse is a new guy, young guy, who's also a relative so you're cautious about giving guidance. : ) Seriously though, this is especially true with the newer, more dynamic, flexing caulks that protect you from splitting. These caulks are great, but they skin over into a rubbery texture that is very hard to sand off and redo. The skin tends to coagulate faster into a granular texture that doesn't smooth well. Hot weather, hot storage amplifies these qualities. Lastly, because of it's flex, it's not as good for smoothing over glops with vinyl or other fillers, unless it's touching a short run of siding that won't move. When you sell that house the entry experience sets the tone. When you wife has friends over to see the new wallpaper, same thing.
I'm looking at building a house near the gulf coast of Texas and everybody is saying Hardie Plank. It that the best siding? You've seen all kinds of home siding and how they wear. What would you recommend and why?
I have hardie and I live in central Oklahoma. Mine is about 13 years old. It was painted by a painter not from hardie themselves. It has faded and many of the pieces have broken due to water hitting them. If you could I would suggest using brick or stone around the bottom. Otherwise I like the siding very well.
My prep: Scrape all loose paint with a small paint scraper while listening to tunes with my Bluetooth ear muffs on. Replace any rotten lowers with the same siding (usually 12 inch rips). Hammer in all protruding nails, caulk then wipe/scrub all surfaces with a large sponge using bleach/water solution, rinse, let dry then check for new loose paint. Use primer letting it dry over night. Then paint using a quality paint.
Hi can you please let me know what that color is by chance im trying to paint my house and im having a shit show trying to find the right gray and want to paint our garage doors darker gray
So what can someone do that's trying to paint trim using a pole to reach a high spot? Also what is wrapped around the lights next to the garage in this video? Looks all crumpled up. That's a good cover.
Is the 100% caulking vs not something you have to suggest or educate most clients on? Or is that a decision you make yourself as a painter and send em a bill? I just started working for a small painting company and they Mickey Mouse a lot of stuff, i want to do things right on my end. First thing they do is caulk around all the windows and the siding and trim

I am spraying with a graco X5 magnum.
What gloves you use and how do you remove the caulk from glove? Or are they disposable?
I’ve got a wood clad ranch that has a lot peeling paint do I have to physically scrap off by hand or can I just pressure washer it off?
im painting my hardie siding. My caulk is attached firmly on the siding but certain places in the caulk are cracked. Can i just caulk over or do you think i should replace it with new?
If you to flash the top of window It’s much better. Caulking breaks down in five years unless you use quad which it’s hard to work with
What kind of caulk would you recommend using for board and batten exterior trim before painting?
Big Stretch
@@Idahopainterthank you and God bless in Jesus’ name
Ditto, ditto, ditto on new guys caulking around the entryway. The only thing worse is a new guy, young guy, who's also a relative so you're cautious about giving guidance. : )
Seriously though, this is especially true with the newer, more dynamic, flexing caulks that protect you from splitting.
How much would you typically charge for a job this big?
I'm looking at building a house near the gulf coast of Texas and everybody is saying Hardie Plank. It that the best siding? You've seen all kinds of home siding and how they wear. What would you recommend and why?
Yes hardie plank is the best!
Do I have to wash the siding/ house before paint or all I have to do is caulk the imperfection
Hmmm, just seems like an overkill on the caulk. Those beads seem huge and the finger smearing make them even larger. Sometimes less is better.
Thanks for the informative video. Dude loves to say caulk.
Caulk
My prep: Scrape all loose paint with a small paint scraper while listening to tunes with my Bluetooth ear muffs on. Replace any rotten lowers with the same siding (usually 12 inch rips). Hammer in all protruding nails, caulk then wipe/scrub all surfaces with a large sponge using bleach/water solution, rinse, let dry then check for new loose paint. Use primer letting it dry over night. Then paint using a quality paint.
Good tips
The water damaged boards might be replaced?
Hi can you please let me know what that color is by chance im trying to paint my house and im having a shit show trying to find the right gray and want to paint our garage doors darker gray
Like your videos! What trim paint do you recommend that last?
Do you remove old caulk first?
Be sensible with carbide scrapers , overzealous handling will take of good bases as well
How often should homes in southern Idaho be painted? I just bought a home that hasn’t been painted since 1994.
So what can someone do that's trying to paint trim using a pole to reach a high spot?
Also what is wrapped around the lights next to the garage in this video? Looks all crumpled up. That's a good cover.
Gooseneck brush
@@Idahopainter Yes 👍 I got one months ago. Marvelous invention! Makes adjusting the brush angle quick n' easy. Looks like they're sold out.
He LOVES the caulk! I'm sure I'm not the first person to post this.
I'd like to know too
Hey how much do you charge for a full 2 story 3000 square foot house if you don't mind me asking. I know I know every house is different I'm talking full blown out caulking sanding of eves everything you would do to your home.
Great info. Thank you.
For Exterior do you also paint the Garage door opener
