Yep precisely, Rachel would rather be the sacrifical lamb than have Harvey be blown to kingdom come. Not just happiness but also relief, knowing that it was Bruce/Batman who came to save him. Harvey mattered more to the people than her, due to his high campaigning to wipe the cities clean of criminal activities. But what's more depressing was that before her death, Rachel never realized that Harvey would take the loss very badly and become a psychotic vigilante, to take it out on those he felt were responsible for her death. I'm sure that Rachel would never want to see that happen at all. But as the Joker said during his conversation with Harvey in the hospital, it was all "part of the plan". Things only got worse as the story progressed... ending with the demise of Harvey "Two-Face" and Batman voluntarily covering up for his crimes, to keep Harvey's "white knight reputation" intact for the next 8 years.
No, she died thinking they would save her. She thought he was just freaking out. She was just trying to calm him down. Both of them thought they’d rescue her.

But he had sabotaged it and it injures the assassin hired to retire him. But his handler shows up to finish the job. He's able to kill his handler and flee to go meet with the woman. On his way there, there's a moment when he realizes that he was actually shot in the fight with his old boss and is going to die. There's such a moment of disappointment, not that he's going to die. He knew that he would likely die in this trade, but that he came so close to winning only to still die in the end. It's a really well done scene. I got to say that while I'm not really a huge Clooney fan, he's been in some really good movies. This one and Michael clayton are both really good. I think mostly because he plays very quiet charachters in both movies and the story depends more on plot and non verbal acting from him.
Even Harveys pain as well! As soonest Batman opened that door. He knew he was chosen. He knew the situation, but man! Joker with zero emotions Hella of scene.
4:14. The heroic music cuts out completely, then the jokers theme slowly emerges- paired with Dent screaming… it gives me the chills. Without the movie actually stating anything, it conveys that the Joker had won. What a masterful scene.
To think, if Bruce wasn't in so frantic of a mood and blinded by emotion, he might - though very unlikely - have predicted the Joker would have tried something devious, or went to Dent's location knowing that is what Rachel would have wanted even if it means she would die.
It's a brilliant scene, but the Joker wins a little too much. He makes Batman and everyone else look dumb and weak throughout the whole movie. Which is great for the actor and makes people think even more of him, but is actually bad for the audience and the filmmakers, because Batman is supposed to be the hero, and Batman is the one whose name is on this movie and the next ones, and the toys and games etc, so the whole machine is designed for Batman to be the one who is dominant and most liked. They did end up making a Joker movie though, but when the character is villainous, it's hard to make things work.
That’s the irony, he understands and anticipates every move these people (Within the law) will do cuz “it’s all part of the plan”. He flips that and uses it to turn the city upside down. Total Maniac and Heath did a fantastic job here.
Honestly, I don't think he even cared. To him, every choice is pointless- it's all a sick game to him. Though it is likely that this Joker was broken unlike most others, it doesn't excuse him from actions that we would consider utterly crazy.
It was intentional because what the Joker said to Batman before he gave him the addresses was that "I thought you were Harvey Dent, the way you threw yourself after her" meaning he was gonna switch those addresses to manipulate batman even more. It's similar to his "I want my phone call" scene as well.
If you remember in the end when batman beats the joker. The joker says that his trump card was dent. I think that was a part of the reason why that the switch happened.
He didn't give exactly opposite address, he said truth "killing is a choice" so batman did decide to kill Rachel , not even batman and audience payed attention cuz that moment was heated , but joker is a man of his words
4:18, it's quick, but you can just see the sadness in Batman's face and posture when he sees Dent instead of Rachel. I still remember the audience just going "Oh noooo..." when it's revealed that Joker swapped the addresses. It was a nice twist.
even how the guy with the phone inside him said "he said he'd replace the voices with bright lights". the joker didn't lie. those explosions were very bright.
“How many of your friends have I killed” the way the joker says that so comfortably is so disturbing yet such great acting just small things like that really make the difference
I thought I counted 23 deaths that Joker had a direct hand in, not including collateral damage. Like when the bomb went off at the MCU you know for sure that the 5 people standing around phone belly were dead so those count. There were probably more but since they weren't 'confirmed' I didn't include them.
"In their last moments, people show you who they really are. So in a way I knew your friends better than you ever did. Would you like to know which of them were cowards?" Joker was such a boss. Cracked his neck right before going into boss mode.
I reckon he probably let the cop beat him first so that he thinks he's in control. Then the cop smashes his head against the glass and BAM! he picks a shard up and gets up like he did in front of Gambol.
The joker went from toddler mode from the beginning to full on boss mode at 1:49 in this is what I love about heath's performance he's always steps ahead and comes across as unpredictable if you ask me!
Heath did it himself the first time because it would be in character for the Joker to do it himself, but the makeup artists recreated the same look when he needed his makeup.
He also let Christian actually beat the shit out of him in the interrogation scene and, and, and, and. Dude there’s not 1 iota of this performance that’s not iconic movie lore now.
THIS is how a character makes a perfect escape. Step 1: Anticipate getting caught. Step 2: Set a trap. Step 3: Distract your captors. Step 4: Spring the trap. Step 5: Walk out the door. A truly well written scene for any suspenseful story.
And it isn't particularly close, either. It's so good it almost feels slanderous to call it a superhero film even, it belongs in the pantheon of great crime dramas like the godfather and goodfellas etc.
Kids now try to prop up The Batman or Endgame, but really neither of them come close to this movie's impact. Not just what it did for comic book movies but film in general.
@@JunkFoodBoobooEndgame was more of a culmination of a decade of movies. It was pretty good, but the main reason it gets hyped is that that brought back EVERY actor who played a hero in the entire MCU since Iron Man. Infinity War was a better movie (not just for the shocking ending). The Batman was pretty good as well, but I don’t think it was ever supposed to reach the heights that Dark Knight did. The Dark Knight, as well, was a good movie, but became even more hyped in the wake of Heath Ledger’s passing. I’d like to think it still would have gotten good reviews, but probably not quite to the extent that it did because of that.

Well, before telling Batman the locations, Joker says that, "KILLING is a CHOICE. Which one do you want to CHOOSE?". That is why he swapped the locations since Batman CHOSE Rachel.
You are right and he also says "you are going to have to choose if you want to SAVE one of them" which is why the Joker always wins no matter what. He has a backup plan. He planted BOTH the idea of choosing to kill and choosing to save.
Not even a minute. If you look for the trailer again you can swar is about a movie just come to theaters soon. Meanwhile the blockbusters on this days look so old fashion and overexplotated. Its unveliebable what Nolan give it to us.
What’s mind blowing is that Rachel’s last thoughts at the end of her life could have been, “Bruce saved Harvey and not me because of the letter I wrote him telling him I was choosing Harvey”
Exactly. I feel like that element of this scene is vastly overlooked. There's many layers to what's going on here and it's a very bleak realization but most likely what she was thinking in her last moments. She may have really thought that Bruce did that in spite of her.
@@livingtorture5745 he couldn't sell the character. Too soft and weak to be convincing. Aaron and Maggie made me dislike both their characters. They almost ruined the movie if not for joker and Batman going at it. Gordon was pretty good too.

I don't think the folks in that room died, they simply got stunned. Because the dude who had a shard of glass to his neck is actually in later scenes, with a bandage in the area where the glass shard was.
Realistically it could be chalked up to, they were just further away. And that guy he was holding does survive (seen in later scenes) so it’s a mix of being farther away and having a shield.
Also the way he looks away when he says, "I know the difference between punks who need a lesson in manners and the freaks like you who just enjoy it." He's like, "Yeah, there's more to me than that, buddy."
@@jamlym4974 joker still broke him though, jokers' supposedly ex military or special forces. I think batman severely underestimated joker until it was too late.
She prob realized that Joker tricked Batman into saving her. But she was relieved that Harvey the more important personnel was the one being saved, and so quietly accepted her fate. Then she was blown away to kingdom come.
I mean, she was the one who rejected Bruce. She probably thought that was the reason why he saved Dent, since she didn't know Alfred actually burned the letter.
Rachel actually thought that Harvey rejected her saying "Yes"... BUT he later said "No, not me! Why are you coming for me??" which referred to Batman showing up to save him. It was what Rachel would've wanted, to have Harvey survive, so she can die in peace. However, she never realized a few things... 1) Harvey was disfigured even though he was saved, 2) he went insane and took her death very hard, then went on a murdering spree as Two-Face, 3) Alfred would burn her letter to spare Bruce further pain, and 4) Batman would tell Gordon to hold him responsible for Harvey's appalling crimes and also be wanted for the apparent murder of Harvey, so as to preserve his heroic image.
The way Heath worked Comedy into such a terrifying character is amazing. He made me laugh a few times throughout the movie. "I just want my phone call"
Joker's monologue on why he likes to use knives is easily one of the most chilling and disturbing moments in film ever. You find yourself rooting for that cop to beat him to death even though you know he can't or won't.

Well, if the long-standing theory about this Joker in fact being a former special force, or black ops soldier, was true, then it isn't that surprising that he overpowered a cop.

Rewatching the movie you realize that Rachel thought Batman chose to save Harvery because of her letter. Which makes this scene that much sadder because in reality Batman wanted to save Rachel, but the Joker gave him the wrong address. What a movie, absolutely superb writing every time I rewatch it, I notice something new.
In that case, Rachel assume Batman was going to save her in the first place. And all along she is thinking that she can survive while Harvey will die? I don't think so.
First time I saw this scene I was on the edge of my seat. The soundtrack building up, the joker manipulating the guy and then Batman saving Harvey when he meant Rachel. God damn I love this movie.
Any PTA movie >>> all Nolan movies combined. Still love you Nolan. Hope we get character driven films like Prestige again instead of mediocrities that are released since
This WHOLE POWERFUL SCENE was to show how The Joker truly controls the entire game in his bare hands and when Batman finds Dent instead of Rachel, proved it. MASTERPIECE.
I remember watching Dark Knight with my father... When the joker was caught in the middle of the film, my father thought that the movie was over XD... Then after this scene he realized that there's a bigger plot twist
I thought the bit after Rachael died was the end and when Rachael is reading the letter is what it ended on. A few years later I watched it and when I found out there is another hour left in the movie o was so surprised
I love the cop just going, “It’s my own damn fault, just shoot him!” Gotta admit it’s admirable, even though he did fall for the Joker’s taunts. Also, literally we got this dude’s “in their last moments” moment.
@@ShazzledWolf32 Yes you did, in the scene where the police prepares to get the Joker and the mob he draws Gordon's atention to the TV-show where the Joker makes the phonecall in which he threatens to blow up a hospital.
Fun fact: The glass shard that Joker is pressing against that cop’s neck was due to Batman smashing his face against the 1-way glass, further proving that Joker was manipulating Batman, and that when Batman gets pissed, he gets sloppy.
At 4:44 the cops hold Gordon back because they knew he was going to go into the building to try and save Rachel (even though he thought it was Harvey) and they knew that it was a lost cause and that his life was more important. It's quick, but it's sweet and I love it.

I love that Rachel was written as a proper character, even though they knew she'd be killed off in the film. So many films or TV shows would have given her a backseat, made her one dimensional or simply not be brave enough to kill off such an important character (within the trilogy, I know she's not from the comics)
I don’t know how to explain how amazing this scene is to me 3:41 I guess the easiest way to put it is the way the music lines up perfectly with how the plot thickens and the way papers are flying everywhere and the way Joker’s hair messes up and he stands there knowing everything is happening the way he wanted it to. I swear to god and to everything that is good on this earth I can’t seem to get enough of this movie.
I am with you. I watch scenes of this movie every single day. Particularly this one and the one right before it, the interrogation scene. I cannot for the life of me understand how good one movie can be. This continues to be my top favorite of all time
Perfect little scene. The heavy and deep soundtrack kicking in, while the joker is the only one left standing, amidst all the carnage and destruction he caused. Captures the character almost perfectly in a single 5 second scene.
4:50 You know, I watched this scene, and kept wondering how he got burned so badly, those flames barely touched him enough to leave minor burns. But then I remembered his left side was covered in fuel. Damn....
So crazy that its been 15 years and im still learning new things from this film and the joker itself. I just learned that Heath got inspiration from Tom Waits who happened to have had the same voice
@@Spidercide He's a psychopath, his power is that he manipulates people, not that he can get through locked doors with magic. Placing a guard in the room was basically like giving him a key to his own cage. They should have just left him alone.
Even if they left him alone. Some point they would have to go in there to restrain him. Joker is physically not that intimidating and he could have easily faked like something was going wrong all to prompt a response for them to come in and check on him. @@derekblackwell2601 Except, you do, he's actually a very basic psychopath. His power is that he manipulates people, and that's it. If you know that, and you refuse to interact with him at all, he loses all of his power. Like, even if he faked an injury, all you have to do is restrain him then check him out.
The ONE person who doesn't phase him- or he gives him clout- IS Batman. He calls him 'garbage who kills for money.' He gets angry, sure - but he doesn't go silent. He relayes to him, but on the opposite side of the coin. Coincidence? I think not...
or how convenient the plot works out for him. Realistically why would they put a guard in the room with him when they can already see him through the two way mirror? As a matter of fact why would they even leave him in the interrogation room? They should have taken him back to a holding cell, that’s like standard procedure.
Uh, no. This movie is ridiculous in how everything works out just “exactly” as planned. In real life, the Joker wouldn’t be in a cell like this, he’d be in Federal prison in a holding cell after murdering so many people. And he wouldn’t get a “phone call”, or basically anything. And there’s no way he could’ve had some rando arrested, with a BOMB in his stomach, and make sure he winds up in some communal prison cell, that can then explode and kill MORE cops, but somehow The Joker doesn’t get injured at all….
I always loved that the guard was smart enough to know The Joker was manipulating him but was just too angry to care. It makes him more sympathetic and makes Jokers escape feel more real and possible rather than if he was just some dumb cop who fell for Jokers ruse. He knew what was happening but was too angry not to take the chance for revenge. Much more human/relatable.
My favorite small piece of acting in this whole movie is when Heath Ledger asks how many of the guard’s friends has he killed and the guard starts talking. Heath proceeds to show very understanding faces in an almost mocking manner. Following the guard giving the number, 6, Ledger mouths the number back to the guard. This is the ultimate sign of pure evil in my opinion. He hadn’t even counted, he had no idea. Or maybe even worse, he did and knew exactly what he was doing to the guard. Either way, it’s brilliant and truly one of the most iconic scenes in movie history.
He was making the guard angry so the guard would come to him and then joker could make him as a hostage. This is why I love this joker so damn fucking much
Imagine if Joker looked back at him and said, "It was actually seven." Leave it up to the viewers to decide if he's just fucking with him, or he actually knows all of the friends of his that he killed.
“In a way, I knew your friends better than u ever did, would you like to know which of them were cowards”. Damn the joker can get inside of people’s minds to get what he wants. I really admire Heath Ledger.
I found Harvey Dent getting his face caught on fire after Batman pulls him out of an exploding building to be a lot more brutal in the Dark Knight than the classic getting acid thrown in the court room moment from the comics, this was very powerful and sad at the same time, it did an excellent job in setting him up to become Two-Face. I would put Aaron Eckhardt's performance up there with Christian Bale, Gary Oldman and Heath Ledger, he absolutely delivered big time.
Sadly, it's the one piece of really weak writing in the film. The heat from the fire on Dent's face would have scorched his lungs so respiration would have failed and he'd have died.
2:00 The music score in this movie is so great... That D violin note is the sign when the Joker is about to do something terrifying. It's so unsettling.
It’s just like the Joker said. People reveal their true selves in the face of death. Rachel was calm and collected, while Dent was unhinged and raving.
Yea same here, 2 times. It was great man. Another thing too, this was the first movie where people clapped and laughed loud as hell to the villains doings, i remember the scene with the pencil trick, people just lost it 😂😂😂
This whole sequence from when the joker is chasing after Harvey in the tunnel to this is by far some of the best works in Hollywood history.. from the acting, pacing, action and tension… well done Christopher Nolan for this epic 20 minutes of theatre
I really love this scene because it shows the desperation and the joker's potential at his best. A man who was considered by Batman himself as a "normal" or "not complicated" criminal at the beginning of the movie, ended up being his worst nightmare killing his only reason to have a normal life: Rachel, and tearing apart the morality of the man who was supposed to save Gotham. The Joker will always be the best of the bests: always ahead of the curve. Brillant, Nolan.

Cool story bro
It's a brilliant scene, but the Joker wins a little too much. He makes Batman and everyone else look dumb and weak throughout the whole movie. Which is great for the actor and makes people think even more of him, but is actually bad for the audience and the filmmakers, because Batman is supposed to be the hero, and Batman is the one whose name is on this movie and the next ones, and the toys and games etc, so the whole machine is designed for Batman to be the one who is dominant and most liked. They did end up making a Joker movie though, but when the character is villainous, it's hard to make things work.
Rachel's final moments show that she is selfless. The second she realizes that she is gonna die is so heartbreaking.
when she says “i don’t want you too”
Joker was right "In their last moments, people show you who they really are".

Joker: "do I really look like a guy with a plan?"
Also Joker: all of this
"Now, I see the funny side..."
No, he just does things
That’s the irony, he understands and anticipates every move these people (Within the law) will do cuz “it’s all part of the plan”. He flips that and uses it to turn the city upside down. Total Maniac and Heath did a fantastic job here.
Joker tells Harvey at the hospital: "I took your little plan and turned on yourself"
He just does things tho. He can cobble together a 10 second scheme but there is never a bigger plan.
Thr fact that Joker intentionally gave batman the exact opposite info about where Harvey and Rachel were is both genius and terrefying
In the ongoing game of TIL....holy crp. Never thought of that.
It was a nice twist.

you don’t have to be a killer to know this , i was once at a gathering where some were preparing food , while waiting for food and hanging out , those who were there guests started talking tough , how they beat up guys and did this and that , than a gas canister that were used preparing food started fire , in the middle of their tough talk stories , i found out one thing about them that day , DAMN they were quick
@@jeremyhopkins646 have you seen beyond scared straight
I love that Rachel was written as a proper character, even though they knew she'd be killed off in the film. So many films or TV shows would have given her a backseat, made her one dimensional or simply not be brave enough to kill off such an important character (within the trilogy, I know she's not from the comics)
She is bringing the suckes
I love the way the Joker mouths “six” as if this news was shocking to him
I don’t know how to explain how amazing this scene is to me 3:41 I guess the easiest way to put it is the way the music lines up perfectly with how the plot thickens and the way papers are flying everywhere and the way Joker’s hair messes up and he stands there knowing everything is happening the way he wanted it to. I swear to god and to everything that is good on this earth I can’t seem to get enough of this movie.
I am with you. I watch scenes of this movie every single day. Particularly this one and the one right before it, the interrogation scene. I cannot for the life of me understand how good one movie can be. This continues to be my top favorite of all time
They should've slowmo'd that scene tbh

Perfect little scene. The heavy and deep soundtrack kicking in, while the joker is the only one left standing, amidst all the carnage and destruction he caused. Captures the character almost perfectly in a single 5 second scene.
4:50 You know, I watched this scene, and kept wondering how he got burned so badly, those flames barely touched him enough to leave minor burns. But then I remembered his left side was covered in fuel. Damn....
Because left side of his face was dipped in petrol, and petrol is highly volatile and flammable...

still dont understand why they put a guard in a room that has a lock
Nice to meet a fellow Zachary
@@Spidercide He's a psychopath, his power is that he manipulates people, not that he can get through locked doors with magic.
Placing a guard in the room was basically like giving him a key to his own cage. They should have just left him alone.
Even if they left him alone. Some point they would have to go in there to restrain him. Joker is physically not that intimidating and he could have easily faked like something was going wrong all to prompt a response for them to come in and check on him. Don’t forget he’s a genius criminal mastermind. YOU NEVER KNOW HIS NEXT MOVE.
To be fair, Joker was sure the police would bow to procedure and give him his one phone call.
The Joker knows exactly what to say to agitate people in to falling in to his traps. I love this portrayal of the Joker. Heath did a stunning job.
Heath’s acting is so good, you always find something new in every scene he is in. Love how he stops “nodding” when the guy calls him a freak at 0:32.
The ONE person who doesn't phase him- or he gives him clout- IS Batman. He calls him 'garbage who kills for money.' He gets angry, sure - but he doesn't go silent. He relayes to him, but on the opposite side of the coin. Coincidence? I think not...
It's the thing he does with his mouth and the way he rolls his eyes. Just a perfect bit of characterisation and consistency
I never noticed that!
rip the legend
holy SHIT thats amazing, fantastic catch
The fact that some of his plans might not have worked if people weren’t like that guard, shows you exactly how manipulative the Joker is
or how convenient the plot works out for him. Realistically why would they put a guard in the room with him when they can already see him through the two way mirror? As a matter of fact why would they even leave him in the interrogation room? They should have taken him back to a holding cell, that’s like standard procedure.

@@londomollari1082 batman block the door with a chair before beating the heck of Joker

4:18 Batman reaction! I bet he was devastated inside! But he continued his mission anyway. What a hero!
His eyes dont move in that scene, so he was doing it purely to manipulate him
He was making the guard angry so the guard would come to him and then joker could make him as a hostage. This is why I love this joker so damn fucking much
Imagine if Joker looked back at him and said, "It was actually seven."
Leave it up to the viewers to decide if he's just fucking with him, or he actually knows all of the friends of his that he killed.
nah it was obvious
@3:20 I’ve always wondered how awkward it would have been if Joker didn’t catch the phone lol

Hell. Nolan should've gotten Zack Snyder to some scenes in this movie. He's the king of slo mo
Agreed. I’d even argue the original Two-Face origin should be this one.
Sadly, it's the one piece of really weak writing in the film. The heat from the fire on Dent's face would have scorched his lungs so respiration would have failed and he'd have died.
How you know
@@yewy100 Because that is what happens when you put your face close to extreme heat like a bomb blast.

This whole sequence from when the joker is chasing after Harvey in the tunnel to this is by far some of the best works in Hollywood history.. from the acting, pacing, action and tension… well done Christopher Nolan for this epic 20 minutes of theatre
3:41, this scene is just amazing. Heath was brilliant as the Joker.
