I'm 52, been playing drums and tuning them a while, i haven't played in an age! But do still keep up on my snare drum rudiments (practice pad) Most days, playing singles, doubles, paradiddles, odd number rolls and of course tripletise everything that's taught generically as a straight time rudiment. Like I say i have a lot of gigging experience but not so much lately, basically I'm saying your tuning method's are pretty solid. 10/10. Yes engineers will mess with the front of house sound mix for the audience but it's very important that you're happy with your sounds in the near field. Obviously you have to like what you're hearing while you play, you are the source of the sound in essence after all.
I've learned not to over tension the snare wires..used to tighten them too much to the point that they were choking the sound. For worship band purposes I use either a 5 x 14" wood shell snare drum with an Evans '56 Calftone batter head and Ambassador hazy snare side head, or a Ludwig Carl Palmer Signature 3.7 x 14" brass shell snare drum with Emperor coated white batter head and hazy Ambassador snare side head (believe it or not it does tune down to a nice 'fat' tone). I tune the batter heads to an approximate 'E' and the resonant head a step above that (about an 'F'). If dampening is required I use a small folded piece of duct tape on the batter side head. I bring a roll of duct tape with me to dampen according to the acoustics of the venue. I use brushes often so good brush response is a must. My tuning generally works well for most applications. Good info thanks for posting.
other stuff that worked for me for getting the "bethel snare sound" was getting the Big Fat Snare Drum that you put on top of your snare, and hitting the snare with the butt of the stick. My whole snare kit: - 14x8 pork pie snare - 42 snare strand - evans st dry (2 x 7mil ply) - big fat snare drum - tuned low (personal preference, you have to experiment between low to mid)
I love tuning drums. I can't explain it. I've played a little bit, but not anymore. I'm just not good at playing a kit and I accepted this and moved on 😄 I still just love the calming feeling of finding what the drum wants to be tuned at. I've said multiple times, "ummm, hey. Do you... Do you mind if I tune your drums?" 😂
Wow man! This is simply WOW! Thanks so much for this tutorial. Sounds so amazing! 😍 I recently purchased a new snare. It's a Dixon Cornerstone 14x6.5" Red Gum and yesterday I also purchased an Evans Heavyweight for it. Just matched both bad boys, tuned it extremely high and man, I just love it. I really love that there's no need of muffling in my snare, so you get the natural and juicy snare tone. But after seeing this... I'm really considering tuning it your way. Can't wait to return and taste it in church with good mics and the full band. 🙌🏼 God please hurry churches return in Guatemala! Haha
Gut erklärt: Resohead maximum high, guter Teppich und das Schlagfell auch bei 230-240hz justieren. I never used samples live! I think the main thing is making sure the source (i.e the snare) sounds good. So good tuning is a must.
Do you play rimshots much or just in the center of the drum with no rimshot. I’ve found that playing in the center with no rimshot makes for a beefier sounding snare. Curious how you approach playing?
