Ludwig would be the one to go for for me. But with muffling. Nice slightly electronic sounding snare in that tuning . However, the PDP has its advantages as well. tbh, I prefer the metal shells for that purpose.
One great snare for a big fat sound is the Tama SLP Big Black Steel snare, 14x8 it was a beast, and affordable too. All of these were great, but prefered the PDP Bronze shell, maybe that's just because I'm biased for metal drums
Great video. Maybe the best on this subject. Wood seclection is also great, but in metal category you could add steel or brass or copper. I do wonder how did you tune the resonant drumhead? 281Hz - mid-high?
Sometimes i tune the top (evans hydraulic): 184Hz at each tension rod with two moongel and the bottom: 400Hz. Snare wires not to tight. it´s a realy great trashy 80´s sound! :)
The snares are fine but for my taste way over-dampened! The Evans hydraulic heads itself sound like a cardboard box and with the gel pads even more... it's like laying a cloth over the batter head. Might be fitting to 80s style music but really not my way to go. Would have loved to hear the snares with the classic Remo CS Black Dot. But at least a good demonstration, how the sound changes with these hydraulic snare heads. 😅 I'm a big fan of DW drums, especially snares - I use the collectors 14x5,5 knurled steel snare, which is very versatile. But I also have a weak spot for these Ludwig snares - they alway sound huge.
THe Ludwig was most pronounced follwed by the Brass ,, The rest sounded too much in the same tone Zone ...There was more fizz and distiction in the Ludwig and the Brass ,....If the goal is low n Deep , they all work fine ..cheers ,,

Great video! I’m actually looking to get the Ludwig acrolite!
It‘s a great snare drum. Also in higher tunings. /Simon

Yeah. I think metal snares work really well for that sound. I never had the chance to play that Tama snare. Would love to try it! //Simon
Thanks for the Video! Question: were you hitting rimshots or just the head? Does it sound better either way?
Can you guys do a video on the Black SD1412BL HT Marching Snare? I ordered my self one 2 weeks ago and I’m supper excited to get it.

I use a Drum Dial rather than a Tune Bot. Do you have any idea what the equivalent measurements would be for a Drum Dial?
I'm surprised at the last part when I say acrolite is my choice!
Concept Bronze sounds the best in my opiniom. It sounds better that most of this snares without muffling and when it’s muffled is just killer.
Yo what? Db meter? That’s dope where did you get that?

What mic are you using on the snare?
It’s a Sennheiser e905. //Simon
