  • This is the process I used to install a backup camera in my wife's 2014 Beetle TDI. I purchased it from rcd330.com along with the RCD-330 head unit. This camera is the flip camera where the backup cam is hidden inside the VW logo. It's a Chinese radio and camera, so it's a bit different than the stock one in North America.
    I hope this video can help some people install theirs, as I didn't find much information out there on this subject. If you have any questions, leave them in the comments and I'll try to help as best I can.

    Your video helped me with the ground and power connections! Thank you!
    Had issues getting it to work previously but I found out that they gave me a faulty relay box to my AV camera. Got it swapped out and since I had the connections ready, it was easier to connect and it worked like a charm.

      I'm so glad the video helped! It was so hard to find anything on installing these cameras into the Beetle that I wanted to try to put *something* up to help. Glad you were able to get it running. It's been GREAT having the camera on the Bug, as you can't see squat when trying to back up!

    Wish you would’ve posted this sooner! I installed the same RCD330 & flip badge backup camera 2 months ago, and cried over that blue wire a lot!

      @@myakegley3076 it took a lot of planning and work to get this thing installed! I wish there had been more available to help out, but boy there was just nothing! The blue wire did suck. 😂

    Hello Matt,
    I followed the steps in your video and can't get it to work correctly.
    My issues are that the camera won't flap once I shift in reverse. It's a black screen with the lines including the steering lines. So I guess the camera is powered on but it just won't flap. I get no error messages. The blue wire is connected to the second wire from the top like yours.
    My other problem is that the trunk only opens when the ignition is on. You got the right fuses by now and could share?

    • @mattscave
      @mattscave  Місяць тому

      Is yours a TDI? The fuse boxes are laid out differently if not, as ours is the diesel. I actually found a full time hot fuse block with no fuse in it for the trunk latch. Not sure if all engines have that one. I used the 25amp fuse with a fuse tap for the main camera power to allow it to flip up. You might have to try a few to find ones that work. Also, the backup light is the blue/ black wire in the tail light. I hope this helps - sorry I didn't see your message earlier.

      @ it’s a 2.0 TDI

      @@VanYule Ok, if you look in the video at 28:20, you can see where the actual latch power is plugged in. It's in between the 2 5 amp fuses. There wasn't a fuse there on mine, and it was always hot, so I just used it. As for the camera power, I tapped into the bright yellow fuse that is 2 fuses down from where I plugged the latch power in. I used the fuse tap that they sent with the camera. That was it, everything worked perfectly. I hope this helps!

    Can anyone explain how the blue wire actually connects? I tried to get Tint world to put both of these in and they’re telling me they can’t because there is no way to do the blue connector on a vehicle that never had a back up camera.

    • @mattscave
      @mattscave  20 днів тому

      When I got the camera through rcd330.com, it came with wiretaps for any connections that needed to be tapped into other wires. This includes the blue backup light wire. You can see the wiretap in the diagram that shows all of the connections on this page as #3: www.rcd330.com/product/flip-camera-dynamic-parking-line-golf5-6-gti-polo-eos-beetle-passatcc-rcd330-plus/. It's a connector that's connected to the end of the blue wire that sort of 'bites' into the existing wire breaking the jacket and making contact. For this project, you have to use it for the backup wire and the canbus connections behind the head unit for the dynamic parking lines. I hope this helps!

    Thank you for this video. I have a 2017 Dune edition Beetle that already has CarPlay with a backup camera in the rear latch (like the one you installed), but I recently acquired a 2013 Beetle which doesn’t have it and I recently got an aftermarket backup camera which requires a wire to tap into the backup light just like you did here. I don’t think it has a connector like yours though. How do you know which wire is the backup light wire? At the end of your video, you show it briefly, but it is hard to see it. It is a blue and black wire that you tapped into? Thanks in advance. Oh, your voice sounds very similar to a friend of mine and as I was watching this video, I had to constantly remind myself that you are not him. It was kind of comforting having a familiar voice guide me through this, so I am not complaining.

      Hi Louis! I appreciate the kind words. The backup light wire is the blue/black wire (if I remember correctly). The backup camera included wiretaps to snap right onto the wire. They worked well and made short work of the whole thing. So far, the camera and RCD-330 have been amazing upgrades to the Beetle. My wife really appreciates both. Hope your installation goes smoothly!

      Nope, it looks and acts exactly like it did before. The only difference is it has a hidden backup camera now!

    My wife has a 14 R-line hatchback. Thanks for this video. I was thinking of doing it with wireless transmitter to avoid having to run all the lines to the front of the car and just use a tag back up camera rather than the pop up handle camera. Can I ask where and how much the pop up handle cam cost?

    • @mattscave

      I ordered all of it on rcd330.com. The camera was an additional $150 over the cost of the head unit. I paid a little extra on the head unit to be able to remotely relocate the USB port instead of having the cable sticking out of the dash. Total cost on both the camera and head unit was around $560-ish. The chinese camera uses RF instead of digital for the video signal, so I'm not sure if it's compatible with the USA head units. Good luck!

    I would like to attempt the same install in my wife’s 14 convertible. Can you provide a parts list.

    • @mattscave
      @mattscave  6 місяців тому

      I ordered the head unit and camera from rcd330.com. Both together were just over $550. Everything I needed was included, other than various tools required for installation. The whole install took about a week. When I'd get to a spot I wasn't sure about, I'd sleep on it.
      Sorry there isn't much of a parts list, but it really was just the camera, head unit, and tools. I think the important tools are the trim removers (I got a huge set on Amazon for $20) and the wire fisher ($10 at harbor freight). The convertible will probably be somewhat easier as you don't have to go through the headliner.
      Good luck!

    I wish I had watched the whole video BEFORE ordering the camera...seems way too complicated and not sure I'm going to give this a try...too many "oh yeah, you have to take this out" or "cut this wire here" Good to know though...thanks

      I took a week to do the whole thing, working on it a little at a time. It's not that complex, but there wasn't any DIY's anywhere on how to install this thing. Good luck with the install. It's worth it in the end!

      @@allenadkins2240 Yeah, I found a DIY on the convertible on youtube, but because it doesn't have the headliner it wound up being different. Also, he didn't go through the side channels, but rather under the center console to get the wiring to the front.
