I've slept on my stomach my whole life and I've never had a problem with chronic headaches. There's an art to sleeping on your stomach, especially with what you do with your arms and how you shape your pillow.
I sleep with a neck pillow, 5 pillows spread evenly under my head - not piled- to give me cushion when I undoubtedly thrash about unknowingly, a pillow under my arm to ease my shoulder pain and a pillow between my legs to ease and prevent piriformis syndrome. Upon awaking in the morning I find I’ve thrown 7 of the pillows around the room and am laying flat supine with my mouth wide open surely enticing a bug to crawl in and my head is just south of the 8th pillow. Well I’m off to bed now 😴 Always enjoy your videos!! 🤗
This explains why I've been waking up with headaches in the back of my head because I've been tossing and turning alot and wake up on my stomach! Thanks!
Great timing. I’ve been having sleeping position issues and and have a doctor appointment tomorrow. This episode answered my questions. I would cancel my appointment but it’s my new doctor.
I absolutely love y'all! God bless you both for helping those of us in chronic pain. I really miss sleeping on my stomach. My back doesn't let me anymore.
Try rolling a towel, just enough to support the neck. I sleep with a rolled towel, every night! It’s awesome. But maybe the guys will have a better tip! Hang in there!
I've been a side sleeper all my life, on both sides for 30 years. Explains why my shoulder and hip have been feeling like crap for quite some time. I have three pillows on my bed now and while I'm feeling a bit better pain wise, I wake up when I switch sides and have to pull a pillow or two with me....need more pillows....
I finally found them! The most famous physical therapists on the internet! ❤️😂. Loved the fun presentation with practical, easy to understand content that helps me! Thanks, Bob and Brad!
My dad (who is a very loud snorer) sleeps every night on a narrow leather couch with a jacket and a hat on. He claims he hasn't found a more comfortable place to sleep in our house (because he feels like our bedrooms are too small and he can't breathe properly), and it makes me sad seeing how he sleeps. Not sure what we can do for him.
I can only sleep on my left side. I use four pillows the same way that Bob does to keep my neck strait , take pressure off of my shoulder and keep my left arm raised up. I figured that out by trial and error. I need to add the fifth pillow between my legs, though. I can’t sleep on my right side because my right hip feels like it’s being stabbed with a knife when I lay on it. Thank you for your informative and humorous videos.
Wow this couldn’t have come at a better time. I’ve been having hip pain waking me up during the night and was worried that something bad was going on. I’m going to use the extra pillows. If it works I’m buying a wedge. Thank you!

Hi Bob and Brad thank you so much for posting this video. Now I know why I was in so much pain/discomfort with my shoulder early on in the year and it is still repairing !! Do you have any exercises for the “crushed “ shoulder I have been sleeping on? Many thanks
Hello . I hope your staying well and keeping safe . I’m not sure where you live but IKEA is very good . You should check out their pillows online . Very very comfortable. There are all sorts of Pillows from IKEA that give you a selection of pillows ranging from Side Sleeper / Back Slipper . Hard or firm or soft Good price to . I have 4 pillows from IKEA I love them so much better . 🙏🏻
Hi @@Jennifervz5jl!! What a great idea!! I have an IKEA two miles from my house!! I love my towel for my pillow, but I will definitely keep it in mind for extras!! Have a happy week!
Wow!! I think you guys just explained my hip pain on the side that I sleep on!! I'm definitely going to go find some pillows! Thank you for the great information! 👍👍👍
I use travel sized pillows. Be sure to buy the matching p cases, since they are hard to find at a local store. I don't like the zippered ones, use envelope style cases
I do the same, I run the gamut from one side to the next, back and belly, but fetal position is my favorite, especially if it's cold. I like to start on my side but move around throughout the night and never end up the way I started. I've been trying to train myself to sleep on my back with my upper half elevated, but it's been really tough. This way is preferred to help limit body pain from side sleeping (unless you use all the pillows Bob does), minimize wrinkles and face puffiness, and helps to open airways and breathe more easily. I intend to buy wedges to help because the pillows don't work so well for elevating properly.
@@TrainInspired Yes, supposedly it helps to reduce formation of wrinkles because you're not sleeping on your face and smashing it against your pillow, which leaves creases and night after night forms wrinkles. Having you're upper half elevated helps reduce puffiness because fluids can't pool in the face like they do when you lie flat, they're able to drain downward instead. I have noticed that it does make a difference, especially when it comes to puffiness around my eyes which at my age I have a lot of in the morning. When it comes to wrinkles, that's more of a long term preventative measure, so it's not as immediately evident as the reduction in puffiness, I just have to trust that it's making a difference.
I was watching an older video on sleeping positions . While watching the stomach position you positioned pillows on chest & forehead. As an old ( dinosaur. Almost old) ICU RN, I have been trying to figure out how to mimic the “prone” position we were forced to mimic during COVID! ( not enough prone beds) & for people to use at home! This seems like an answer/solution??!! I’m going to try tonight! But for short intervals while you sleep. Any ideas for How to improve the theory and SUCCESS of proning patients would be so welcomed …If you have learned any new tactics or tweaks a new video would be great to share !! NEW ideas are so welcomed & something new is to be learned every day!! Our PT is so overworked, exhausted as everyone is…but some education we could give to people in general & to take home… well ..WOW!! Thank you!
I suggest several travel-sized pillows. I use one at my chest, lenthwise; one under my upper arm, rested over the chest pillow, but not too high under the arm-pit. Gotta have one between the knees to prevent hip and back pain. Amazon has a slender, firm travel sized pillow. At first I hated that pillow until i realized where i could use it.
I love seeing your videos when I've been experiencing a lot of pain. I think I've got that Farmer syndrome because I thought it would be good for me to stretch that while I slept. I'm going to try the pillow between my knees thing tonight.
I start out on my stomach with my right leg cocked to the side ( so I am sort of in my left hip rather than completely on my stomach) and my head turned that same direction, one hand under my left hip and the other across my chest. Then I turn on to my left side, unfortunately with my left shoulder rolled forward and my right shoulder also rolled forward so I tend to stress my back muscles. Then I almost always wake up in the morning on my back but my head is turned to the right so I pinch my right side neck muscles. I am currently dealing with right side neck and shoulder pain. I am a mess.
I feel also that a stomach position has a strong calming effect on the brain. And the lungs breathe better on its backside (this is a position for covid for that reason) of course the problem as they say is the neck. So i put a thin cushion under one shoulder to raise the head slightly (.5 cm). That is enough to release the neck joint.. with one leg up as a support, there is a little slope.. still on the stomach but not completely... Experimenting
I’m a stomach sleeper. How can I use pillows to help me with that? I’ve tried the other sleeping positions, but I can’t get comfortable. Please help me with how I can sleep on my stomach, and which pillows I can use. Sincerely, Restless in Houston.
Thanks for this vid! I tried the pillow things when sleeping on the side and also putting the pillow under my hips when sleeping on my stomach, but my problem is I change sleeping positions every 2 minutes because my process of falling asleep is super long, so I had to adjust the pillows with every turn which made it more complicated :( are there other people who change their positions too often? did you find any solution to sleep more healthily?
When I sleep on my back (infrequently), I can't get comfortable unless I roll up a hand towel and place it under my neck instead of using a pillow. Is this safe or could it lead to respiratory issues?
The best position for me to fall asleep, for lack of a better description, is the colonoscopy position. I use that, and flat on my back with a small pillow.
Great video! Love your channel. For sleeping positions, is there a known problem with side-sleeping with your lower arm bent (elbow forward) under the pillow? Did something very painful to my shoulder this summer and I think sleeping that way either caused it or made an existing shoulder issue to do with desk/keyboard work much worse than it otherwise would've been. Felt like something tore, and took months to heal ... had to sleep differently while that happened and am still anxious about doing the same thing while sleeping now. Would be interesting to hear your thoughts if it's something you've encountered! Thanks again for all the fab vids! Take care
I never sleep on my stomach anymore, but the other night I had a dream that I was suffocating, and I woke up on my stomach, face down in the pillow and gasping for breath. Kinda scared me. Too short for such a topic... there are a lot of accommodations we can do on a stomach-position or on a side position to stay safe in REM sleep as the muscles get paralyzed... I can't follow you when you suggest looking at a screen in a bed room: it is a deep sleep Killer (Matthew Walker neuroscience sleep labor). Moreover I fear that lying in the back can't help anyone in REM as the mouth gets open and the tongue can retract into the throat. I confess finding the right position is not as easy and a very personal matter...
gosh, do most people sleep in just one position ? i thought most people change throughout the night ? i never sleep on my back - i cant get to sleep that way. i am usually on my side, or fetal position. but i dont think i could think about moving a bunch of pillows around every time i changed positions !!
So do you need 5 individual pillows or would one of those wrap around pregnancy pillows be good? I'm not pregnant but I've always kinda wanted one. And at least it wouldn't fall off the bed if you toss and turn at night. Has anyone tried one of those?
Can I sleep with no pillows? I feel that even with one pillow behind the neck when laying on my back, I still get neck pain from being in flexion all night
Weird. I tried the pillow between the legs, my lower back started hurting afterwards. Had to go back to my previous position, on side with top leg balanced atop the bottom. Sometimes it does fall off forward like you demonstrated, but then my whole body tends to roll forward and I end up halfway between side and stomach position.
If I use a pillow between my legs when lying on my side, I have to make sure the pillow is fully between my knees AND my ankles and feet. Body pillows are good - but I find they are too thick so I use a king sized pillow.
My Pillow is a very mediocre pillow... over hyped. Try the latex pillows. Just search with Google. I just purchased 2 (side sleeper) 60 days ago and have never slept better.
